Experiencia negativa: Ridiculous. We were a returning customer but never again. Brought one of our GC Conures in for and couple of injuries to her feet. During “check in”, we were informed that initial “exam only” prices had increased by about 30% since last visit 3 months ago. Then, to our utter shock, the lady (or guy), proceeds to tell us that if we wanted any potential life saving treatments to be performed (like CPR) if needed, they charge a PER MINUTE FEE to perform CPR or any other life saving procedures. SERIOUSLY… This place advertises how much they care for your pets and suggests that they have your pets best interests at heart? This isn’t even the worst part about the visit to this place. After we paid the ridiculous price to get an “exam”, they called us back to a room where this vet had no idea what he was talking about. He didn’t even know the difference between a Conure and a Parakeet and that they have dietary structures that are different from the other. Proceeds to tell us our GC Conure needs some antibiotics and mild pain medication and that it would be an additional expense to get the medication. During this entire visit, which took 4+ hours.. they couldn’t even clean the wounds on her feet. What a joke and waste of money. The only thing that this place actually cares about is the amount of money that they are capable of extracting from your accounts. “PAY PER MINUTE” CPR.. At no point in the future will we ever be bringing in another one of our pets. There’s several other places we can go that actually pop care more about your pets than your financial situation. Shane on this place.

Experiencia fantástica: We met Dr. Keleigh Collinsworth while our adorable dog was in the ICU at DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital. I truly wish every human doctor was as knowledgeable, kind, and patient as Dr. Collinsworth. Not only did she explain every medical detail and answer every single question, she also helped us navigate difficult decisions during an incredibly stressful time. She went the extra mile every time we interacted with her. Dr. Collinsworth returned phone calls, found time to talk and comfort us, and often worked well past the end of her shift. She provided extraordinary support not only to our dog but also to us as his owners. We believe every patient who meets Dr. Collinsworth is lucky, because they will receive the best possible care—both medically and from a compassionate human perspective. Dr. Collinsworth is an exceptional veterinarian and we could not be more grateful for her expertise and kindness.

Experiencia negativa: Unless you're euthanizing your animal, absolutely do not go to this place. I brought my dog in because he cut his paw pad pretty bad. I kept him off of it till we got there. The lady that took him back to check him in had him WALK to the room, leaving behind a trail of blood with every step. After 5 HOURS of waiting in a room with his foot not even wrapped, his paw pad split open to the point where they have to do reconstructive surgery where the sedation alone cost $1500! because of THEIR negligence my dog is now in worse shape then he was when we came in. Unless you have $10k to give the vet i 10/10 dont recommend.

Experiencia fantástica: My cat was admitted to the ICU at Dove Lewis for 3 days with cholangitis. Every vet, nurse, vet assistant, and receptionist I interacted with was so kind, compassionate, and helpful. My cat received exceptional care and is now recovering well at home. I appreciate the daily emails and calls from the vets with updates, clear explanations, and answers to my many questions. I can’t thank you all enough for the care you provided to my baby!

Experiencia fantástica: Brought my dog in for rapid breathing with known valve disease. She was seen quickly, and treatment was started before Dr. Saha gave us an update. The initial recommendation was to keep our dog for a couple of days to stabilize her. She would likely live only one year with treatment, and that year would be filled with declining quality of life, vet visits, and medications. Dr. Saha answered all of my questions, and we made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize our sweet girl. Our goal was to take her home, so Dr. Saha worked with us to improve her respiratory status enough for her to come home.

Experiencia fantástica: Our sweet kitty Mittens received immediate care as she faced her last moments. With tenderness and professionalism the team at Dove Lewis could not have been more capable and compassionate. I'm grateful for their knowledge and experience. Experiencia negativa: We went in because my dog started showing symptoms of distress and possibly airway obstruction, and I wanted to take a rather-safe-than-sorry approach. At check-in, they have you pay a non-refundable $225 deposit, which is steep but somewhat understandable given the nature of emergency care. They triaged him as high priority due to my worries about his ability to breathe. They took him back and "tested his vitals" (gum check, blood pressure, etc.), all of which took about five minutes, and then called me back to wait with him in an exam room because they wanted him separate from other dogs in case it was kennel cough. We were in that room from 6:50 to 11 PM and never saw a vet. I went twice to ask about status because nobody ever came to update us. I called today about trying to obtain a partial refund, and (of course) the answer was basically, "Well you signed the thing, so... ‍♀️." Look, I appreciate that they're open 24/7 for true emergencies, and I'm sure the staff are in this for the right reasons, but this is a bad way to do business. People don't have hundreds of dollars to spend for that level of service. If your pet is critically ill or injured, you may have a better experience. But if you are just erring on the side of caution, you may be better off with another option.

Experiencia fantástica: My experience was above and beyond any expectations, and I am indescribably grateful. I only visited on two occasions. The staff were the kindest, most compassionate people. I cannot rave enough about how I appreciate every one of them. Since the question of 'areas for improvement' was posed, my only note would be- I had time to view the website before my last visit and learned about a financial assistance option. I was able to apply and was approved SO fast. Again, I cannot express how grateful I am. I only wish this option was mentioned to folks at the point of intake. If not only to break the barrier of shame around financial instability. I never would have considered a veterinary facility would offer financial assistance. I cannot thank you enough for this program being available.

Experiencia fantástica: I brought my dog in on Sunday afternoon. They took her immediately, diagnosed her spinal problem, and Dr. Du surgically repaired her that evening. Dr. Du & others were very good about communicating her needs and what it would take to fix her. Shelby was also very good with teaching me what she needed for home care.

Experiencia fantástica: My cat, Polly, was literally dying when I brought her to the hospital. She was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis. Today, she is home again and thriving. Everyone, from the receptionist, to the doctors have been professional and caring. Update 2/16/2026 Polly had her follow up visit. I am just as impressed with their speciality center as I am with the emergency clinic.

Experiencia fantástica: Absolutely incredible veterinary hospital. Our beloved 14-year-old dog suffered an acute colon perforation at 2 a.m. on a weekend. Within hours of diagnosis, he was in emergency surgery. Thanks to their expertise and truly top-tier care, he was discharged from the ICU just four days later — happy, comfortable, and wagging his tail. Every single person we encountered — from the front desk team to the technicians, aides, and doctors — was compassionate, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive during one of the most stressful experiences of our lives. I genuinely believe he is alive today because we brought him to DoveLewis when we knew something was seriously wrong. We are beyond grateful for the care they provided.

Experiencia negativa: If your animal is not literally dying, do not bother bringing them here. When they admit your pet, you are told you are being charged a physical exam fee, but it does not include a physical exam, it is simply a vitals check. They failed to check the mouth of my partners rabbit when he wasn't eating and we didn't find out his problem was mouth ulcers after two visits - that his regular vet found instantly. We filed a grievance with Dove Lewis for not checking his mouth, and their explanation was that the initial exam IS NOT a physical exam, just a vitals check to ensure they are not going to immediately die. If we wanted a physical exam then we needed to pay hundreds of more dollars for x-rays, diagnostics, blood work etc. None of that makes sense and is inherently my misleading. I hope this review helps create transparency for folks to be able to make a decision about the care of their pets.

Experiencia negativa: Horrible experience dealing with their booking and scheduling. Aside from the astronomical pricing, it is amazing to see such a large facility be so poorly run. They cancelled the appointment the day before our scheduled visit for specialty and failed to communicate. However, they were happy to take our money beforehand! So many other great vets in the neighborhood, highly suggest you look around before engaging DoveLewis

Experiencia fantástica: Took my parakeet in to Dove Lewis on an emergency as she had a prolapse and an unformed broken egg inside her that needed surgery. We were seen immediately and they took our sweet Beane bird back and put her in an incubator for comfort. After they explained every option we decided that due to her age and health she may not survive surgery so decided the best thing was to put her to sleep. They treated her and us with kindness and compassion. They are expensive but in my opinion, their care and compassion was well worth it. I definitely recommend them for your pet.

Experiencia fantástica: Staff was wonderful, friendly, and great communicators. They managed to get my dog’s surgery much quicker than expected, which was so helpful for a non-emergency procedure that was still causing lots of problems. Surgeries are expensive but they managed to work with me on ways we could keep it within my budget. When we came back to get her staples removed, my dog was ecstatic to be back. Goes to show the quality of care she received.

Experiencia fantástica: I went to the appointment with trepidation, as my sweet, older rescue dog showed signs of heart issues. The whole experience turned out to be positive from the beginning, with kind and helpful reception staff and knowledgeable technicians. The cardiologist, Dr. Reynolds, was excellent and answered every question I had. It's so good to know there is an emergency care facility like this in Portland. I would never hesitate to recommend them to anyone and would go with confidence if the occasion arose.

Experiencia negativa: I waited 3 months to write this review to make sure I would be objective as much as possible. I hope this is a community service announcement that will save animals lives. I came to Dove Lewis in November 2025 with a reptile showing severe signs of distress and completely checked out, unresponsive. However, due to lack of competence and knowledge on reptile care, the staff and vet made the decision to not treat her and instead, placed her under "observation" waiting for her death. I was charged over $400 for this lack of service that costed my reptile her life. I was dismissed and ignored while I cried in the lobby for over 4 hours begging for my reptile to please receive the care she needed to have a chance at survival. My begging went unanswered and she died there in the hospital because the staff failed to try to treat her. Had I known, I would have preferred for her to die in my arms in her own home than being left to die in the impersonal, cold environment of a hospital. I can't express how much distress this situation caused me. But I hope this review will save reptile pet lives. This is NOT the hospital that can treat reptiles. I hope my experience saves lives. Please know what happened to me so you choose better care for your reptile.

Experiencia positiva: Our parrot Sky received very good around the clock care. We were grateful that the hospital had the diagnostic equipment. We wished a surgeon would have been available when we came in. His condition declined waiting a couple of days for surgery and we're not certain if this delay impacted his treatment. Post surgery he continued to go downhill and passed 4 days later. We are heartbroken. BUT the staff, techs and vets really did what they could. There's just not enough exotic vets available. RIP buddy. You will be so missed. Regarding price: we were willing to pay whatever it took to fix Sky. It was over $4,000 and that hurts too but frankly it wasn't about the money.

Experiencia fantástica: I trust Dove Lewis implicitly . My dogs have had multiple specialty or urgent visits. The staff is always calm, polite, professional, and thorough despite working in a high-stress emergent/ urgent environment. Our last visit required an abdominal ultrasound for my 14 y.o. Dachshund. The radiologist sat and explained everything and offered some potential options for referrals and next steps. He was wonderful and reassured me on the overall picture of my pets health.

Experiencia positiva: **UPDATED** Jan. 29, 2026: we needed to go back as our rabbit was not improving as we had hoped, but this visit was far worse than the prior one. It was a different team on staff and a totally different experience. We arrived around 9:30 PM and did not leave until 3:30 AM. From what I could tell, there were only three exotics in the lobby that night, we came first with our rabbit, then later came in a parakeet, and much later came in a hamster. Unless there were more exotics in the back that I was not aware of, I’m not sure why it took so long for them to see our rabbit. We watched cats and dogs get in and out throughout our time there. It took at least four hours until they could look at our rabbit… when we finally got taken to a room to speak with a doctor there were no new solutions, hardly suggestions, and I was exhausted by this point. I was so mad and worried. The doc could feel my frustrations and asked if I’d want to see my rabbit, if that would make my decision making easier, to which I said yes. After checking to ensure no one was in the middle of a procedure, he took me to the exotics examination room where my boy was loafed up, angrily, in a cage. He seemed like before and I just wanted to leave by this point so I asked for fluids and additional medicine and we would see how he does. It is worth saying that the doctor did at least let me see pickles and he was kind enough to get prices of the different procedures for us. It still took another hour for them to get him squared away and returned to us. By 3:30am we finally got to leave and get some sleep before work started for the day. While there we noticed a couple miscommunication situations with the staff and other patients. With us there was barely communication happening as to the wait and how he was doing until we saw the doctor. Jan. 26, 2026: We were walk-ins for our rabbit, Pickles, whom was not eating or drinking (GI Stasis). We were there a total of 3 hours, not bad at all, considering the circumstances. Upon arrival they communicated prices and procedures and would not perform said procedures until they got the approval from us first. During the wait they kept us updated with the process and we eventually got to go in a room and see him and they let us determine for ourselves how we wanted to move forward after hearing the possible options given by the specialist one-on-one.

Experiencia fantástica: Wonderful, compassionate people working here. I took three of my rescue rats, on separate occasions, to be euthanized here after a long battle of fighting tumors. The team was very gentle with our babies, they let us hold them as they were given sleep meds, then taken to another room for the rest of the process. The nurses then texted us when they passed. They even gave us ink prints and fur clippings. It also helped so much that we qualified for the velvet fund, so it was fully covered. We went somewhere else for the cremation process.

Experiencia fantástica: When I went to Dove Lewis, my dog was immediately evaluated -and the severity of my dog's situation was recognized and acted upon with compassion and we were taken into a comfort room. My own disabilities were recognized and accommmodated without embarrassment. We were given comfort, compassion, explanations every step of the way. I was given time to hold and sing to my dog and tell him how much I loved him. My tears were accepted. Overall I would say the attitude, caring, compassion, concern for both of us, from each staff we interacted with, became individual "divine encounters" that eased my heart and soul, and that eased the transition of my dog's life from this world into the heavenly realm. I was allowed time to adjust my mind before leaving. I was escorted to the doors. I have already received notification from the cremation company, that I may come receive my dogs paw prints and tufts of his fur, which, in my distress, I never even thought to obtain. My heart aches with loss, yet was filled with love and compassion at Dove Lewis that will hold me a lifetime. I cannot express adequate thanks. If you love animals... If you care about animal owners who are low income ...if you have the capacity to give ... Please make Dove Lewis a high priority on your "giving list". Their care was far beyond the words I can find to thank them and those who helped me make decisions for my dog's end of life care.

Experiencia negativa: Don't put a cheetah print blanket in your pets carrier before they go back. They will steal it and then gaslight you about it. I waited over 7 hours for my pet to be released for something very minor. I sent him in with a cheetah print throw blanket to make his carrier more comfortable. When he came out, the blanket was gone, so I went up to the front desk and asked if they knew where it was. This lady was so rude and tried to gaslight me about it and told me that there were only towels in his carrier. I'm literally the one who packed it, I think I would remember what I put in his carrier. Eventually she told me that they use Cheetah print blankets for surgery so it probably got mixed in, which whatever, if that's true then it's not a big deal I guess, shit happens, but the way she treated me for simply asking was so unwarranted.

Experiencia fantástica: I took my dog Scout for an evaluation for his Cushings. Dr Katz reviewed Scouts records and explained the plan, labs needed and ultrasound. She reviewed everything and sent the plan going forward. The parking under the building was very convenient to get Scout out of the car and into the clinic without him having to be in the street traffic.

Experiencia fantástica: My African gray parrot needed emergency care after a spill he took. I had to go to Portland bc none in Salem would see him. I would recommend this clinic 1000 million times over. Inwasmtsure if I could even get care without the ability to pay, and before I even applied for credit they had taken him back to care for him. The entire staff made what could have been one of the scariest things with bird into an experience that helped calm me and my parrot, they made sure that we were both ok, and went above and beyond all expectations. A huge thank you to the entire staff. Would rate 10. Stars if I could

Experiencia fantástica: The level of care, professionalism, and empathy from the doctors, vet techs, and front end staff is amazing. It has been a huge comfort during two resent experiences with DoveLewis. Dr. Selby was clear, understanding, and emotionally supportive. He presented medical options, shared his personal experience, and was supportive of the decisions made. All of the vets and staff were timely with communications and answering questions. Costs were reasonable compared to other non-emergency vet services I have recieved from local vets. Considering my first experience with DoveLewis was on Christmas Eve & Christmas day, the costs were very reasonable. The estimated costs were clearly presented and there was no pressure to upsell services. The front end staff worked with me to file claims with the pet insurance company taking that task off my to-do list during a difficult time. The facility is clean, well staffed, offers a wide range of services. No pressure or guilt from anyone; only support. Most pet owners arrive stressed, even panicked over the illness or situation their pets are experiencing. Everyone at DoveLewis understands this dynamic and works very hard to lower the emotions and fear of the unknown. ER situations are scary and with emotions running high the opportunity for a bad experience are present. During the multiple times I have visited DoveLewis I saw the staff do everything they could to lower the stress and the maintain a calm, caring manner. Sending my deepest thanks to all the staff, techs and doctors at DoveLewis.

Experiencia fantástica: My dog’s life was saved because of the incredible doctors and medical team in the ICU. I felt so supported throughout the horrific ordeal by everyone from receptionist to doctor. During her 5 day stay, I received early morning emails, including a picture of my pup to keep me informed about her condition overnight. It was easy to talk to the doctors whenever I needed. Plus, the generous visitation policy allowed us to visit our girl whenever we wanted, except during a short span of time during rounds and crew changes. Dove Lewis is an outstanding organization that anyone with a pet in need must seek. Thank you for the knowledge, the kindness and the care. Tonight we got to bring our girl home. ❤️

They were very compassionate and informative, and more importantly they were quick. He had been suffering but they also gave me time with him to grieve. Experiencia negativa: Read before you go: it is likely that they are understaffed and will not give you any real sense of how long you will need to wait to receive care. Came in with my partner and their dog who was having neurological symptoms - it took 2 hours for someone to take her vitals and another 4.5 until we saw a doctor. Every time we checked in they said it would be "soon". When we did finally see a doctor, we were told that the dog likely had cancer, that it would cost $4k for an MRI to know for sure, and if we did do the MRI we would then have to decide if we wanted to put the dog through radiation or brain surgery. It was not adding up for me - he insisted we didn't have enough data to know what it was, but when I asked what other diagnostics we could do to get more data it was like there was nothing else to screen for except for cancer. I asked if they should do blood work or check her ears. He said no. His assessment was she likely didn't have much time left. 2 days later the dog started throwing up massive amount of blood. We rushed back. They acted like it was a priority by immediately putting us in a room. It took over 90 minutes before anyone even came and took her vitals. We had to leave the room to tell someone the dog was still throwing up blood multiple times while we were waiting. Finally, after 5.5 hours in the exam room, we saw a doctor. She was surprised we hadn't even done blood work at our last visit. We did the bloodwork. Ultimately, it was the medication that the previous doctor prescribed that had her vomitting blood. Fast forward to the next day when we got a second opinion at VCA. The doctor there had a totally different take, said there are all kinds of things to screen for and it very likely may not be cancer, and took the initiative to ask about and check my partners insurance. The MRI we were told would be $4k was actually only $1k and after all that, the dog has an ear infection and just needed antibiotics. All said and done we spent about 14 hours and $1100 at Dove Lewis to have *maybe* 45 minutes with a doctor, be prescribed the wrong meds, and be told the dog was dying when she just needed antibiotics.

Experiencia negativa: I'd like to leave half a star, to be honest. I spent two full days at this "emergency" hospital recently and I want to be very clear about my experience and what I witnessed. Dove Lewis seems to operate—at all times, as understaffed and under-resourced. If they took responsibility for the condition of their clinic, maybe they could mitigate the additional stress and suffering of the people looking to them for care. For example, it would be helpful to give everyone who comes in the doors an estimated wait time and clear expectation about what to expect (i.e. you could be there all day with hardly any attention to your pet's experience). Moreover, when we were finally able to see a doctor after waiting all day, we were told—after a brief physical exam, that it was likely a brain tumor in my 10yr old pup and she'd have 6-9 months. We were basically advised to take her home and keep her comfortable, discouraged from an MRI, and all without ever taking her vitals. The second opinion we got recommended an MRI immediately and we quickly learned that no, my dog does not have cancer or a tumor, but an inner ear infection which is totally treatable. The negligence in this place feels next level. Do not recommend.

Experiencia negativa: . After my dog got surgery he got staples. A week later I brought him in to get them removed. I later find out that some were forgotten. I bring him back in and they said it looks like “we got all of them out”. A LIE. One week later my dog is still having trouble jumping, turns out that another staple was left on him but this time the skin is now over the staple. You would expect these people to do a better job being that they charge thousands. How can these professionals lack attention to such importance just because these are not their pets. I can only imagine how they made sure to “take them all out”. Unnecessary and such an inconvenience to keep bringing in my dog just because the job is being done incorrectly after paying $7,000.

She was a great listener and I appreciated her sharing her rationale and giving me the pros and cons of the various ways we could go so I could feel confident about a decision to give my girl the best possible care. All the staff from the front desk to multiple vet techs were caring and considerate, and clearly made every effort to make my dog as comfortable as possible.

Experiencia negativa: If I could give 0 stars I would. I brought my dog into DoveLewis around 12:30am because she was coughing/throwing up. Because the front desk team suspected kennel cough, we were immediately brought to an exam room. The receptionist came back to the room with us to fill out the intake paperwork and collect $185 for the exam. I was told the $185 would be applied toward the final cost of the visit. I paid and then my dog and I proceeded to wait 2.5 hours before the vet tech came to take vitals. She did not communicate anything further about my dogs condition nor the expected wait time for the vet. My dog and I waited another 2 hours (it is now 4:30am). I went to the front desk thinking they forgot about us in the exam room however I was informed that there were still 8 animals in front of my dog and I could expect to be seen around 6am (6 HOURS AFTER I brought my dog in). Being expected to wait 6 hours overnight in a cold exam room with no communication about medical care/wait times is unreasonable. I called to ask for a refund but because they took vitals, they claimed they are unable to issue a refund. I am incredibly disappointed with my experience and wouldn't expect this treatment from a nonprofit organization...

Experiencia negativa: DO NOT GO HERE! I took my dog here after he had a potential stroke. They make you pay $185 right when you walk in which is non-refundable. They gave no indication of a long wait period but I was prepared to wait a bit given it’s an ER. We waited over 4 hours and were never seen, never given an update and when I asked they said they couldn’t give an answer as to when we’d be seen but probably at least another hour which would put us at 5. I said I wanted to leave and they wouldn’t give me my money back. I understand there are patients that are in more critical condition but wait times should be properly communicated and updates should be given. Especially when you are worried about your pet and have no idea if they are ok or what is going on. And then if you choose to leave without being seen you should be refunded. They made an already stressful situation more stressful and upsetting. I left crying. I went to a different ER in Beaverton and was seen immediately and they apologized on behalf of Dove Lewis and were appalled at their treatment of us. Go anywhere else if you care about your pet!!

Experiencia fantástica: Saved my dogs life. It’s been a few years now. However we had been seen at another er multiple times because my dog had been throwing up, acting oddly and towards the end was clearly in huge distress. The final time I called the other hospital who told me my 10 year old dog was just ‘old’ and likely needed to be put down. I trusted my gut and didn’t return to that hospital but went to Dove Lewis. They took one look at him and he was rushed into care. It was a very long night but it luckily a specialist was on staff who had a high suspicion my dog had Addison’s disease based in part on blood work the other ER had taken but ignore the clearly low potassium levels. They got my dog stable and we were able to come home where I was able to treat and get him into a solid vet who confirmed Dove Lewis’ suspicions. If it hadn’t been for the care and diagnosis he received that night I wouldn’t have my boy. It’s three years later and he’s still going strong at 13 with little other than normal senior issues.

Experiencia fantástica: I had as good an experience as you possibly could when I had to put my dog Ruffles down. The staff was so gentle and kind, and I would absolutely use their service again when the time comes. Ruffles was so stressed out by people coming to our house, so while many people recommended having the service come to our house to put him down, I am really glad we went with Dove Lewis instead. Also, the entirety of the cost is covered, including paw prints and fur clippings, if you have OHP. Thank you all so much for doing such difficult but important work <3

Our girl was in a very fragile state with GI issues and a dangerously low body temperature, and we arrived feeling terrified and overwhelmed. The staff at DoveLewis immediately stepped in with confidence and compassion. The veterinarians explained everything clearly and reassured us that they regularly treated rabbits with low temperatures. They told us that recovery can take 24–48 hours, which gave us realistic hope and helped us understand the process. They carefully examined our rabbit, explained their findings, and showed a level of expertise and gentleness that meant the world to us. They placed our rabbit in an incubator immediately, initiated appropriate supportive care, and monitored her closely. We truly felt like our rabbit was in the best possible hands. The entire team was patient, kind, and understanding as we cried. The team at DoveLewis treated our rabbit like she mattered, and they treated us like humans who were doing our best in a crisis. DoveLewis quite literally saved our rabbit’s life. We are endlessly grateful for their professionalism, empathy, and expertise. I cannot recommend them enough for anyone with an exotic pet.

Experiencia fantástica: I'd never been to an animal ER for my pets before, but I had a family member whose cat's life was saved through Dove Lewis's medical interventions. When my cat started to show urinary tract issues that I couldn't determine the urgency of, I took her to Dove Lewis in the evening. While my experience was certainly heightened by the fact that my cat was able to leave for outpatient care, and didn't require invasive/surgical interventions, I can't imagine having a better experience. I was there for less than 3 hours. The client specialist that checked me in was calm, clear, and made me feel well-taken care of. The vet that talked with me about my cat's issues was personable, articulate, and took time to explain why she was prescribing the treatment she thought we should move forward with, never making me feel rushed during our consultation. And when I paid the bill at the end of the visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find the cost was only a little more than I would expect from a scheduled appointment with my local vet. There are few pet ER options in my area, so it feels like a bit of a miracle to have such a high quality pet hospital so nearby.

Experiencia negativa: TLDR: slow communication, understaffed, low quality stitching on wounds, poor bedside, you may have better luck than we did on a holiday Came in on Thanksgiving around 6:30 and pet needed many stitches from a fight between two family dogs. It was a very traumatic incident and when the DR finally saw us and said maybe don’t do dinners anymore. She also did not seem to have really looked at our dog and when we asked how he was doing/was he okay she said he was probably high on methadone at the moment. Not great bedside, kinda judgy. Went home and waited hours to hear back, called and was told to keep waiting, they would call us. Waited hours again and called and they said he’s ready, they just needed to get some medications together. 48 hrs later a stitch brakes. I call and they say to email pictures. Hours go by. Another stitch breaks, I call and they say email more pictures. We trying to get some kind of sedative to keep him still. Hours go by. I call and email again. Hours go by and they never call. 24 hours later I call as a third stitch has broken and there is a large pocket behind a dime sized hole and I’m on the way to another vet They apologize and ask if I’d like to fill out a greivence form. We take the dog to another vet and they end up completely restitching the whole wound and it looks and heals so much better. They said they were understaffed that weekend which I can understand so you may have better luck than we did. After writing this review another three stitches just came untied.

Experiencia fantástica: My dog has been suffering with a seizure disorder for over 3 years our vet is wonderful and has worked hard to help us manage but he had gotten worse. After a 2 hour very thorough appointment with the neurologist at Dove Lewis, I can say that this is the first time I've felt some peace about his disorder and how to treat it. They walked me through his diagnoses and treatment options using clear diagrams and charts to help me understand the medication options with their side effects, effectiveness and costs all side by side as well as what to expect going forward in terms of a normal life for my dog. It was such a great experience and I feel hopeful about how the rest of his hopefully long dog life will be.

Didn't realize my normal vet was closed. But Dove Lewis wouldn't sell me any. They'd literally rather see my pet die than sell a $10 bag of rabbit food to a non-customer. Thank God Pets On Broadway sells it. Only store in town. But I was getting panicked and I will never forget Dove Lewis' heartless policy.

Experiencia negativa: I took my puppy to dove Lewis. UNDERSTAFFED. Only 1 dr working with about 25 people waiting. It took over 2 hours til we were seen. They did not weight puppy. Nor could they give me a straight answer about how old she was based on her teeth. Could not guide me on proper amount of food to feed her per day. I found the doctor could not speak English very well. It was her second language which made it difficult to understand. 185.00 fee to be seen by Dr. Not worth it. The animal hospital in gresham has proven to me that they are better qualified as well as quality of care. I also recieved better care at the humane society in north portland. Dove Lewis was a disappointment to me. The doctor was more interested in pushing 1000.00 worth of tests and even admitted that the dog looked healthy. You do not recommend tests when the dog looks and acts healthy unless your motive is money only and not what is best for the animal. The doctors motive was wrong. My mother would have given more wisdom then this peticular Dr. This whole experience was a bad decision will not repeat. You ask the reason I took my dog here? They had an immediate opening to be seen. So they said. Now I know why. You have to wait to see a good doctor. ~ This was my experience. ~

Experiencia fantástica: I think people need to be more considerate of what actually constitutes a bad review- long wait times and financial obligations do not. We had been in and out of an urgent care with one of our cats for several days. After a pretty bad experience there, the vet was recommending we go to Dove Lewis. As I sat and read reviews, I was a little hesitant about going. We decided to still take her in any way because we knew urgent surgery was going to be the next step, and they still seemed like the best choice for this and specialty care despite the reviews. Our experience here was great. Everyone was very caring, sensitive, and informative. Never any frustrations over the numerous questions we asked- just patience and detailed explanations. I honestly wish we would have know about them from the beginning to save the headache at the urgent care office we went to. Our lady received fantastic care from everyone from the very beginning. She made it through surgery with no complications thanks to her fantastic surgical team and is now home recovering. Thank you to you everyone who had a part in caring for our lady and getting her home safely to us. Just a PSA that they are a hospital. Maybe some of you aren’t familiar with how hospitals, specifically emergency rooms work so here’s a breakdown. Cases are taken by most emergent to least. If you have a longer wait time, be grateful as that means your pet isn’t in as dangerous waters as someone else’s. Also, medical care is expensive. This isn’t new news. Stop complaining and leaving bad reviews for wait times and money. Because this hospital deserves higher reviews as the level of care they provide is exceptional from the moment you step into those doors and even past when you leave.

They were kind, responsive, provided great updates constantly, and did a great job with the surgery. Experiencia fantástica: One of our cats was not eating and urgent care did a preliminary ultrasound that showed masses in his liver. They referred us to DoveLewis for a more comprehensive ultrasound and follow up. We showed up early on a Monday morning and the front desk staff was very friendly and prompt, getting our cat seen quickly. The doctor wanted him admitted to immediate care and the ultrasound to be done later in the day. He was very compassionate in delivering what we knew was likely bad news and promised us prompt follow-up. A few hours later, DoveLewis called with the results that confirmed extensive cancer in his liver. We elected not to submit him to further testing and cancer treatment based on the explanation, which was very thorough and clear. The doctor did recommend we admit him to the ICU overnight thought to rehydrate him and get him eating while monitoring him. They also indicated we could visit him in the ICU, which we did that evening. Seeing him in the ICU was heartbreaking, but also wonderful as they had treated him well and he was active and eating and very happy to see us. The staff all said how great he had done and how much they enjoyed having him. We brought him home the next morning and the staff was very patient and thorough with the discharge instructions and answering our questions. Unfortunately we only had 5 more days with him before he passed, but DoveLewis gave us clear answers, realistic expectations, and treated him so he could be comfortable at home for his last days. RIP Othello.

Experiencia fantástica: The doctor that helped us to give our sweet dog, Nala the most peaceful goodbye was amazing. She was extremely empathetic, and she showed how much she truly cared about our sweet girl. She made us feel comfortable and at ease through the entire process and we couldn’t be more thankful for that end of life care was pretty expensive as far as cremation goes, but I can understand as the cost of many things has gone up quite a bit. Experiencia negativa: Terrible experience here. After waiting 7 hours with my doggo, They finally informed us it would be another hour minimum wait to possibly be seen. Having been required a $185 non refundable deposit upfront i asked if i could return in the morning. Next day my dog was able to see the vet, only to be told there was nothing they could do, for my dogs ruptured abcess and tooth other then give antibiotics and tell me to go somewhere else after collecting $500. The next day I then contacted dove lewis, to ask some advice as if I should clean my dogs wound or what to do, because the doctor literally did not give me any information whatsoever and I was told I would receive a call back later that day. Its now the next day and I still have not even received a phone call or email with any information. This hospital definitely seemed like all they cared about was a pay check.

Experiencia negativa: We had such a horrible experience at Dove Lewis, and then after we filed a grievance, it was like pulling teeth trying to talk to someone from management and get answers. 

We brought our beagle puppy in after she ate one 200mg Advil pill off my nightstand. The doctor told us she would need to be hospitalized for 24 hours and that her life could be at risk. We were terrified and followed their recommendation. She was kept at the hospital for over six hours and sedated, but when we later called the ASPCA Poison Control line, they told us that hospitalization was completely unnecessary for the small dosage she had ingested. That the most we should be concerned about was her having an upset stomach. In hindsight, if we had been advised to call the ASPCA number first, we would have avoided the hospitalization entirely. What made things even harder was how the hospital handled things afterward. When we tried to talk to someone and file a grievance, communication was very difficult and at times dismissive. When we later filed a grievance about our experience, we were told that the doctor had been treating an “uncertain dosage” of Advil. However, when I followed up, I was told that the dosage was actually documented multiple times in our dog’s chart notes. This inconsistency made it difficult to trust the hospital’s review process. We were partially refunded but still paid nearly $600 for treatment that we later learned wasn’t needed. Not to mention having our 4 month old puppy sedated, which also wasn’t necessary. The lack of transparency, empathy, and follow-up left us deeply disappointed. I hope the hospital uses our experience as a reminder to guide pet owners to consult with ASPCA Poison Control before recommending costly hospitalization in future cases.

Experiencia negativa: The staff was nice. Everyone was friendly. The communication and their policy is weird. I was told by my vet and by several other urgent care facilities that we should not wait to bring my cat in for his eye to be seen. Granted, he seemed okay aside from a swollen, goopy eye, and him constantly rubbing it. We got to Dove Lewis at 6pm. Explained his situation. Showed them pictures. They charged us $185 non refundable EXAM fee. Fine, not a problem. We were placed in a room in back. We waited until 7:15 (so an hour and 15 mins) until a triage person came in and weighed him, took a very quick and distant photo of him for his chart, asked if his vaccinations were up to date, and then said the doctor would be in as soon as possible. At this point I asked if it was worth waiting or if we should come back. She advised we wait. They did not take his temp, they did not listen to his heart, they simply weighed him and asked me questions. I was told another doctor was coming in at 8 and that we had a chance to be seen. I specifically asked them to check in with us and let us know if at 8 we would not be seen. She said okay and no one ever came. We waited until 8:45 and called the front desk. They finally came and told us he probably would not be seen tonight because other patients were in more critical condition. Okay fine. They kept telling us his vitals were fine. What vitals? What vitals were taken aside from getting his weight? NONE. We paid $185 for an EXAM that never happened. They charged us for a service they did not provide. Im not even upset that I have to come back at 6am after leaving there at 9. I understand that other animals were in more critcal condition. They should be treated first. But I am upset that no one even looked at his his eyeball which had gotten worse while we waited. No one took his vitals. And no one communicated to us that we should probably leave at any point. I had to ask them because they forgot about us. I am upset that I paid $185 for literally nothing to be done and that no one had the sense to come tell me, "hey he probably wont be seen tonight". Like...they knew how busy it was when we showed up. They just wanted us to pay them even though there was a high chance he wouldnt get to see a doctor. There was no conversation about what would happen if we did not get to see a doctor. I honestly do not want to go back there ever again but I have to if I dont want to lose $185. Irritating and honestly, it's giving scam artist. Why not wait until you know for sure the doctor can see your pet and THEN charge the exam fee? How dare you make me pay for a service that I never received. And then keep saying "his vitals are fine" when NO VITALS were even taken.

Experiencia fantástica: I’ve been here a few times in the past 5 years for 3 different bunnies but had the best experience last night / this morning. Two of my bunnies got in a scuffle yesterday late afternoon and one ended up with a wound that didn’t look like it would heal on its own. He got vitals taken not long after we arrived and the vet on duty saw him about 2 hours after we got checked in, which is pretty reasonable for Dove Lewis or any ER vet really. I have lots of praise to say for Dr. Hilfman specifically. He was kind, confident and direct about what he recommended for care. He and the other staff accommodated our request to let us feed our bunny some hay and critical care prior to leaving him there overnight. It meant so much that me and my partner get some calories in his belly because he hadn’t eat dinner with all the commotion. It really put our minds at ease. I really appreciate that Dr. Hilfman explained that he would have to go in priority of urgency and our bunny might have to wait for treatment but assured that he would fit him in during his shift and that he would be comfortable in his vet crate. He gave us the option to wait in the lobby or said we go home and sleep if we preferred. We didn’t get a lot of sleep but more than if we had stayed there overnight. It was clear that Dr. Hilfman and the team on duty overnight really cared about the welfare of our bunny. He is recovering well and we am grateful for how they took care of him.

Experiencia negativa: They told me, in error, to leave before euthanizing my cat. I was supposed to be there at the end for him but they said I had to leave, and I got a call 20 minutes later asking where I was. By this time I was too far away to be back in time and they proceeded, emailing me a "confirmation" and sending my emergency contact a text. They were much more interested in collecting their fees than how I or my cat were doing. They then sent me a survey, which I responded to, followed by another survey. I received a handwritten card of condolence with misspellings. I've requested that while I don't expect any refunds, deserved as they may be, an apology from a human being would mean a lot. They have ignored me. So I'm posting here. Do NOT use them. They turned a traumatic experience into a catastrophic one.

Experiencia fantástica: Everyone there was so lovely amazing people with big hearts, they did so much to accommodate me and my snake, they could see me on the verge of tears and handed me my snake in the cutest little crate with heating and blankets, and the lady was just making small talk with me easing my mind and putting a smile on my face, these people are truly angels sent down here on earth. I loved my experience, and my western hognose made a full beautiful recovery! Thank you dove Lewis team

Experiencia negativa: On August 28, 2025, I brought my 2½-year-old Yorkshire Terrier to DoveLewis on Pettygrove Street in Portland due to difficulty urinating. At the front desk, I was immediately asked to pay a $185.00 fee before he could be seen. I was extremely anxious and wanted him to receive care as quickly as possible. Once inside the exam room, the attending veterinarian, Dr. Hilfman, who was very nice, reviewed X-ray results that revealed multiple stones lodged in the urethra, blocking urine flow. Dr. Hilfman recommended a catheter procedure to push the stones back into the bladder, which would then require surgery for removal. At this point, no written estimate for surgery was provided. I authorized the catheter procedure, though I now believe it may have been unnecessary and added significantly to the overall cost. During the catheter procedure, a staff member named “Noelle” (spelling?) entered the room with a surgical estimate ranging from $7,537.70 to $11,811.60. Her explanation of the estimate was confusing and incomplete; she could not answer questions about several line-item charges and her lack of clarity added to an already stressful and emotional situation. I was frustrated that I was asked to approve the catheter procedure BEFORE being presented with the surgical estimate. When my dog was finally returned to me, he appeared lethargic, which I understood could be expected after such a procedure. He had an IV in place and a bloody catheter line attached to a collection bag. While we were in the Comfort Room waiting to euthanize my dog, front desk staff members entered and asked to collect an additional $1,396.72. I did not have my credit card with me and explained that I would call to make payment the following day. Despite this, I was required to complete a lengthy financial agreement on their iPad, including providing a photo of my driver’s license. In that moment, the staff showed little empathy for what I was going through; it felt as though euthanizing my dog was treated as nothing more than a financial transaction. This should have been handled in the exam room BEFORE moving us to the Comfort Room. After reflecting on the events of that day and the total cost of $1,581.72 to ultimately euthanize my dog, I strongly feel I should not have been required to pay for the catheter procedure before receiving a surgical estimate. The lack of transparency and compassion throughout the process was unacceptable. I understand that Yorkshire Terriers can be predisposed to kidney and bladder stones due to genetic factors. However, the way this case was handled left me with no real options. Confronted with an unexpectedly very high estimate, I was devastated and felt forced to euthanize my little guy. Before posting my review, I reached out to DoveLewis’ Client Relations Specialist, Rena, to share my experience and give them an opportunity to respond. On October 7, 2025, she told me she would investigate the matter and follow up, but I never heard back. The lack of response is disappointing and has only reinforced my concerns about their communication and accountability. Additionally, I have heard from others who have had similar negative experiences at this location. Because of my experience, I would not recommend DoveLewis to anyone and I will not entrust any of my future pets to their care!

Experiencia negativa: They don’t tell you that the payment at the beginning is non refundable if you don’t see a vet. We waited two hours just for her vitals to be taken by a tech with no idea of when my puppy would be seen for persistent nausea and vomiting. She started feeling better and we left only to find out I’m out $185.

Experiencia fantástica: We had to visit Dove Lewis this weekend, after leaving a VCA emergency clinic due to lack of care, (search VCA in Clackamas to read my full review) (10-10-25) My doggo was immediately seen ($150 emergency fee) and we were taken to a room to wait. He was assessed and given a X-ray ($400) within 30 mins of arriving. Thankfully and by God's will, there was no blockage. The Dr that was taking care of my guy sat in the room with us and went over everything they checked and looked at. Her and the techs continued to come in and assess him, walking him up and down the hallway to see if it's bones or absolutely anything else that could be affecting him the way it was (took him up some stairs because the day before he was going up and down the stairs a little funny not wanting to jump up). They did literally everything they could to try to figure out what was wrong with him all while he never left my sight. I am so beyond grateful for their compassion and thorough care. The Dr herself sat in the room with us for over 30 mins just talking and coming up with a game plan, and trying to think of everything she could try to get a idea of what's wrong. At the end with a comprehensive game plan, we were able to leave and went to the front to pay the bill. At this point I'm assuming at least $400 and obviously more for whatever "tests" they had conducted, and the person at the desk said "ok, so it looks like just $134 and you're good to go". They didn't even charge us for the x-ray, I was beside myself. Their generosity and compassion and willingness to help WITHOUT mention of any money, and my guys care not contingent on what money I did or did not have. I was so thankful, my pets are my life and to feel like their quality of care depends on how many hundreds of dollars I had (or in this case didn't have). My youngest daughter is a freshman and she's going to school to become a non profit veterinarian so she can help the animals and people in need and do whatever it takes to make sure everyone is taken care of and ok, this entire event just solidified the reason for her career path, we need so many more people like her and Dove Lewis. Nothing less.

Experiencia positiva: I took my dog in after a walk and she must have got into something because her heart rate was up and she was panting super hard ... I raced to Dove Lewis immediately with $120 cash , all the money I had . It was going to be $180 to have her seen . I owe them nothing . I was then handed a stack of paperwork and wanted me to call 3 people at 5am to try and borrow the $60 I was short . If that didn't work then I was to fill out an app to get a loan . The whole time mind you my dog is looking and acting like she was having a stroke or something... I gave 3 stars because I know they help animals but for my experience that night I would have gave 0 stars !
