Humane Colorado, formerly the Dumb Friends League - Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur: Reviews
Fantastic experience: My dog a pitbull was miserable with allergies and after 4 vets and lots of money later this vet done the job and didn’t mind paying with full success thank you my dog can sleep again
Fantastic experience: Just had my pup Jaxx there for dental cleaning and unfortunately many extractions. Very thorough, professional, and caring excellent team at extremely good price from start to finish. Regular vet recommended them since their price was not as affordable as Humane CSU Spur. Don't hesitate to have them take care of your pet
Fantastic experience: Thank you to H. Knox for assisting me with a very confusing Lepto vaccine history and for working with my vet as well. Your service went above and beyond and I can’t thank you enough!
Fantastic experience: When my sweet pup unexpectedly became very sick and ultimately passed, the team at this veterinary hospital was absolutely incredible. From the moment we walked in, they treated us with compassion, patience, and genuine kindness. They explained everything clearly, never rushed us, and gave us the time and space we needed to say goodbye. During one of the hardest moments of my life, they were gentle, respectful, and so understanding. They also handled the cremation process seamlessly and with so much dignity. That meant more to me than I can put into words. I’m truly grateful for the care they showed not only to my dog, but to me and my family as well. Thank you for making such a heartbreaking experience a little easier. I forgot the name of the vet we talked to but she was extremely knowledgeable and even at one point paused to ask if I had questions before continuing as it was all so hard to hear! I will forever recommend this place!
Fantastic experience: Not only are they reasonable priced for cat fixes. I am so happy with outcome of this place! They were very knowledgeable and polite at drop off and pick up. I would highly recommend them for your pet needs. My kitten was very scared arriving there, but they were very understanding with him. I would bring all my animals here when needed.
Thank you, Kamri for such a kind review!
Fantastic experience: What a great place! Lovely staff, affordable price and they took wonderful care of my puppy. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: These people helped us put our beloved Newfoundland to rest. Price was very good and they were extremely kind and compassionate about the whole process. Very impressed. Thank you so much for everything!
Fantastic experience: I want to thank everyone who helped my babygirl Gorda today she needed eye removal surgery after being attacked by an unleashed dog i was able to get an appointment with them fast and got the surgery done the same day I got sent home with medications and clear recovery instructions I’m confident on what to do thanks to them. Thank you
Fantastic experience: This vet clinic is amazing, caring, and wonderful!
Fantastic experience: 10/10 veterinary experience. From the moment we walked in, we were immediately brought into a room, no long wait at all. Every single staff member was incredibly kind and welcoming, and we were even greeted by the cutest little bully breed at the front desk, which instantly put us at ease. The medical assistant was genuinely compassionate and attentive, taking the time to listen and never making us feel rushed or dismissed. That level of care makes such a difference, especially when you’re worried about your pet. Dr. Bono was outstanding. She is extremely knowledgeable and took the time to sit with us and thoroughly explain everything in a way we could understand. She made sure we felt informed, comfortable, and gave us plenty of opportunity to ask questions. We discussed all possible options, and it was very clear that this clinic is not focused on taking your money, they truly prioritize what is best for the pet. I would highly recommend this vet to anyone, especially those experiencing financial hardship or feeling overwhelmed by high veterinary bills. You can tell this team genuinely cares about both pets and their owners, which is rare and deeply appreciated.
Fantastic experience: My dog was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma and was spreading rapidly. We had to make the difficult decision to euthanize him for a peaceful end, a decision that was hard to make but necessary. They thoroughly went through the process, gave us the time we needed with absolutely zero pressure, overall very professional. Thank you for making this day as comfortable and easy as can be.
Fantastic experience: They were great it's a little hard to find but I ce there it's great.
Fantastic experience: We had a neuter and spay done here for our cats Hazel and Grayson. Everything went smoothly and all the staff were wonderful Thank you!!!!
Negative experience: needed help but was turned away because we didn't have a stupid appointment. thought this was a veterinary hospital. we cant afford anything and my moms cat really needed help asap.
We are sorry to hear that you were not able to receive the urgent help that you needed. Our team does their best to accommodate as many pets as possible, but we do reach our maximum capacity every day and can only guarantee pets can be seen with a confirmed appointment. We recommend calling right at 7am to request a same day appointment. If your family's cat still needs to be seen, please call the main hospital line at 303-722-5800 and press 8 to speak directly with a team member and we will do our best to help!
Fantastic experience: All of the staff take the time to make sure you know all options and possible outcomes. They are super thorough and professional yet totally affordable. Jagger had his cherry eye surgery here. They even called to check on him at home. Thank you tons!!
Fantastic experience: They always take care of me and my pups.
Fantastic experience: I would like to thank all the staff for being so kind. I REALLY appreciate the Doctor that assisted me with my Doghter, Lola today. She was so kind and helpful. She even helped me with taking Lola to the car. That really meant A LOT! She went above and beyond! I’m sorry, she told me her name, but I was so in shock from my Dogs Stitches and Staples, I forgot. Thank you all again for your awesome service.
Fantastic experience: Kitty neuter clinic was efficient and well run! Our kitten is healing well and if we ever get another pet we'll be back.
Fantastic experience: It's affordable and quick every time I go here. Thanks Humane society for a great experience
Negative experience: I have received services here for years and they are good. However, I am consistently disappointed by the front desk phone service staff lately. Like today, I waited for one hour on the line and when I finally got someone on the phone they seemed exhausted (despite it being the start of the day) and had little patience for any questions that I had. I couldn’t even get a few words in before the staff person decided to ignore any further questions and route me over to a manager’s phone, who was out of office so it led me to a voicemail instead. Reeeeeeally unhelpful - and what am I going to do, call back so I can wait another hour? Other than the terrible front desk staff, I have to say the services here remain affordable. I just loathe every time I have to call in for an appointment, because I don’t think the scheduling staff cares all that much.
Hi Lenny - Thank you for this feedback and while we're happy to hear you have had overall positive experiences with us, we're sorry to hear that you've had this frustration more recently. We've passed this feedback along to our team so your experience can be addressed and adjustments can be made.
Fantastic experience: They took such good care of our Lily when she needed her teeth extracted.
Fantastic experience: We had an initially frustrating but ultimately productive experience with the Humane Colorado/CSU Spur vet hospital. We brought our cat in for dental work because he has deciduous teeth that need to be removed. We were able to get him in for a same-day appointment, and after the initial consultation, he was cleared for dental surgery, which we scheduled for the following week. On the day of his surgery, we dropped him off, but were called an hour later and told that his dental situation was actually more complicated than initially thought, and he needed to be referred to a specialist. As it turns out, our cat has a rare genetic condition that requires specific dental treatment. While we were frustrated that the surgery was cancelled same day after we had already gone through the consultation process, we are grateful that this vet hospital was able to diagnose this rare condition, because it took 4 years and many vet visits to figure out this out. Now our cat is able to get the specialized treatment he needs. The prices here are very reasonable, staff are very friendly, and overall I would absolutely recommend the CSU Spur/Humane Colorado Vet Hospital.
Fantastic experience: Staff was excellent and took great care of my kitty Layla Joon❣️ She was spayed.
Negative experience: They took the $50 for the exam that was only 5 minutes and still didn't treat my dog because I was homeless and couldn't afford to get $209 for x-rays and the doctor lied to me about something in my dogs stomach,,, I took my dog to another great hospital off Colorado and Colfax and the doctor there was absolutely wonderful to treat him with hydration antibiotics and something for his stomach which didn't have a obstruction absolutely free,,,,, so I gave what I could pay which was $20 and the team there was absolutely wonderful and I would not recommend you to go to Colorado humane for anyone concerning your fur babies
Hello Jerry - We are sorry to hear you did not have a positive experience at our hospital. During Bart's exam, he was uncomfortable during abdominal palpation, which is why our veterinarian made a recommendation for diagnostics to determine the cause of his symptoms. We are very sensitive to financial constraints and make every effort to work with our clients within their means.
We understand and empathize that this was a stressful situation, however your behavior toward our staff made it difficult for us to have a productive and respectful conversation. We are glad to hear that you were able to find care for Bart elsewhere and that he has improved with the treatments offered and hope that further care is not needed.
Negative experience: Why would I ever go here when I was quoted $1223 for a cystonomy that would require two separate trips to Denver when Twin Peaks in Evans will do it for $1200, only require one trip and is closer to me to boot? With all your donors, you should be seriously undercutting for-profit businesses. Shame on you.
Dylan - Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We were unable to locate your account under the name provided, so we can't speak to the specific estimate you received. However, we can share that our pricing reflects a combination of factors: the cost of veterinary care in the Denver area, the accounts we carry for clients needing payment support, and the level of donor subsidy available at any given time.
Our mission is to help increase access to veterinary care, and we're thrilled to hear there is a low-cost option located in your community that works better for you! We are fully transparent about how donor dollars are used, and as funding for our community programs grows, we are committed to passing those savings on to the pet owners who need it most.
Fantastic experience: Extremely friendly and professional staff. They take time to thoroughly explain everything, which really helps put you at ease with regard to the treatment of your pup.
Fantastic experience: I had my cat Bellas end of life done here and it was so nice. Everyone was so kind and compassionate.
Fantastic experience: I got both of my cats teeth removed here and one of them put down here today because she was diagnosed with severe Lymphoma. Every visit felt comfortable and the veterinarians there were always respectful and reassuring. In my opinion, this is one of the best vets ever! I've had my cats since I was 15 and they have always went to dumb friends league whenever I had the chance to take them there. Their prices always beat other vets, especially when I had to get their teeth removed. I will always recommend this place to anyone I know.
Negative experience: I took my cat here this weekend for his neuter and the whole experience left me shocked and upset. When I picked him up, he was sitting in a cat box full of his own pee I have no idea how long he had been left like that. On top of that, he started drooling from his mouth after surgery, and when I brought him back in, I was hit with another $328 bill. The infection wasn’t even external his incision was already healed which makes me believe it came from inside, after the procedure they performed. While the nurses and vet staff themselves were kind, that doesn’t erase what happened. My cat is like my baby, and instead of feeling supported in a stressful moment, I was humiliated on top of everything. At checkout, the front desk lady stopped me and loudly told me in front of the entire lobby that I “had not paid.” I explained (and showed) that I paid through their third-party payment company, yet she continued to argue and basically accused me of not paying. Everyone in the lobby got to witness this uncomfortable and unnecessary scene. That’s not professional. That’s not compassionate. And it certainly didn’t make me want to trust them with my pet again. I left feeling like I was treated as if I was trying to skip out on a bill at Walmart instead of a worried pet owner who just got handed a $328 infection charge for a problem that started after THEIR procedure. I live in the neighborhood, and I’ll be telling my friends and neighbors to avoid this clinic. My cat never had these issues before, and now I’m left with extra bills, stress, and an animal still recovering from something that should’ve been straightforward. Very unwelcoming, very uncomfortable, and very disappointing.
We are sorry to hear you did not have a positive experience and appreciate you taking the time to let us know so that it can be addressed. We strive to provide compassionate care and sincerely apologize for the interaction you had in the lobby at discharge.
We have been working with you offline regarding the drooling both your cats experienced after surgery. We are happy to hear they are improving and welcome further discussion around their care.
Negative experience: We have used this clinic before in the past and had good luck, but this week we had our kitten neutered and it was a terrible experience. When we came to pick him up they handed us his crate that was soaked in pee no idea how long he was sitting like that but right after a surgery like that should not be acceptable. We were told if we had concerns to call and they were in the office until 5-6. No one ever answered or called us back until Monday. We had to take him to another urgent care because the incision from his tattoo was so deep it was splitting open and he ended up with an eye infection. I understand there is a high volume at this clinic but this neglecting someone’s pet we trusted them to take care of him. When the manager finally called me back I was brushed off as well sorrry it’s high volume stuff happened. Don’t bring your pets to them.
Hello Mandy - I'm sorry you felt dismissed when we spoke. Our spay/neuter clinic does not have a direct phoneline and our hospital is only open Monday-Friday, hence the delay in returning your call over the weekend. I'm sure that was frustrating given your level of concern. Once again, our sincerest apologies for your cat being discharged with urine in his crate. As a high volume spay/neuter clinic, we see a large number of patients each day. Patient care and safety is our top priority; our team does their best to ensure each pet is clean prior to putting them in their carriers after surgery. This was unfortunately missed and has since been addressed with the team working that day.
With regards to the wound associated with the tattoo, this occurred from self trauma and was not related to the above. We offered to have Sherbet seen to look at the wound and evaluate his eye, which you declined since he was already seen by your veterinarian. The offer still stands if you still have concerns.
Fantastic experience: Staff amazing, service was great and will definitely use them in the future when needed.
Fantastic experience: We were really worried about our kitten, and the team here was so caring and understanding. They got us in right away, which gave us so much peace of mind. Sara Oden was wonderful and explained everything clearly. On top of the great care, the visit was very affordable. We’re so grateful for the compassion and quick help we received. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: My Sisters service Dog died while we were in Denver on vacation. They helped us with cremation. Everyone was sympathetic and gracious. The price was reasonable.
Fantastic experience: My dog had surgery. The staff is compassionate, kind, caring, courteous, knowledgeable. They take the time to explain and answer questions. My dog is recoverying nicely. They treated my dog with love and care. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: This wonderful organization helped guide my wife and me throigh.the most grueling pet ownership decision. They handled the procedure with grace and dignity befitting my beautiful dog at her end. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff, helping us through the most difficult time you could go through very grateful for their care, and kindness and professionalism.
Fantastic experience: I came from NORTHside Veterinary where their slogan are “prices always go NORTH but never South”. After paying $500 dollars for a diagnostic and medication, they “recommended” i do a follow up for $700 . Im glad I decline, instead i did my follow up here at Humane Colorado. I paid 85% Less and was informed my pet was wrongly diagnosed! After treatment from HC i had a Free Follow up! Thank you ABIGAIL for helping my sister and Melito( Mellow). I am more than convinced they are Professionals with Passion and will take my other 2 furry babies soon! Thank You Abigail!
Fantastic experience: A great experience. Took my cat to not only get spayed but also get a vaccination update & chip for my cat. I Was really anxious at first but the Pet's provided a lot of helpful information, both prior and Post operation!
Fantastic experience: Great experience from the consultation to the post op communication. My senior dog needed many teeth extracted and I was on the hunt to find an affordable solution. The veterinary team walked me through everything that we needed. Great response through email as I work a lot during the week. They even called on the day after surgery to check-in. Many primary clinics I have had don't do that! Very grateful for their care and expertise.
Fantastic experience: I highly recommend this place for any and all veterinary care. I brought my 10 year old Australian shepherd here for multiple dental extractions. They did a great job of keeping me informed of any issues during his surgery. When his heart started acting up while being under, they promptly called me to explain the situation. When some of his sutures opened up, they urged us to come in on the same day and they sent us home with more medication. When we finally were able to finish his dental work, they were happy to share that we would only have to pay for the first dental extraction appointment and the anesthesia for the second one. Thank you for providing high standards care at affordable prices.
Fantastic experience: This is our second service at this location. 1st was a spay the second a neuter. The staff are friendly and caring, and the price is unbeatable.
Negative experience: I called Saturday trying to get a appointment they say call Monday Wednesday called first thing in the morning and they how say call back tomorrow The lady that answered the phone was very rude. So sad because we donated money to them before and we can get our dog in for a visit. We won’t ever work with them again or donated time or money. Only because the front lady wasn’t even considered. She was kind of rude
Hi Carina - Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and we're sorry to hear you did not have a positive experience. Our hospital operates on same day appointments on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately, both days you called we were not open for appointments. We do our best to serve as many community members as possible but do fill up very quickly. We recommend calling first thing in the morning to try and secure an appointment time, though it may take multiple tries due to the volume of calls we receive. If you have concerns that you feel have not been addressed feel free to contact a manager at 303-722-5800 so that we can discuss further.
Fantastic experience: can't say enough good things about my experience here. my dog has had life long dental disease and we finally decided to get his teeth extracted. the first vet we met, i believe his name is Matthew, was extremely thorough in explaining the process and walked us through every possible scenario that could take place with this surgery. the day of the surgery, the checkin process was seamless and they called us a few hours later to pick him up. the vet, i believe her name was Sara, walked us through his procedure and exactly what they did, which helped calm my nerves. all of the extraction and the medicine came to about $940. i don't think i would've been able to afford this procedure without the help of humane colorado and their subsidized care, and i am infinitely grateful to have found them.
Fantastic experience: I've never felt like a vet or tech has cared more about my animal than when we came here for surgical care advice for my dog. Amazing people.
Fantastic experience: My dog Wolf was throwing up blood, a lot of it. The Doctor took her right in without an appointment. She,the Doctor put her on a gastrointestinal food for 3 days with a probiotic to put on the food. The Doctor also gave me Gabapentin for pain. It only cost me $400. !
Fantastic experience: Amazing veterinary hospital. Very state of the art facility. Compassionate staff. Kudos to the staff members mentioned . Janet, Winona, Danielle front desk amazing A++++ Dr Wilson and Dr Oden fantastic job diagnosing and surgery performed. Jolisa, Summer, Diamond, the assistance and techs superb. Not to mention Dr Holly who performed a surgery on our Husky in the past Outstanding job. Getting a follow up today, I will add more after that Great job Humane Colorado, I definitely recommend.
Wow, Eugene! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and your very kind review!
Fantastic experience: Wonderful experience because of the excellent Vet and staff!! The building is state of the art and so sleek and comfortable. The people here are kind, professional, great communicators and just the best!!!
Wow! Thanks for the great review and your kind words, Cathie!
Fantastic experience: Couldn't get my dig in anywhere after she had an obstruction and became very dehydrated. Humane Colorado saved my dog Domino's life and I literally cannot thank them enough!
We were happy to help, Kendra. We are glad to hear Domino is doing better!
Negative experience: Been taking my cat here for a while. She's an older cat and has sinus problems. They've been giving me medication for her, which has been helping so much. We went back to get a refill on her prescription and the lady at the front desk, not even the doctor, told me that because my cat is so old, there's no use in giving her medication and that she recommends euthanasia. We asked to speak to the doctor and she made up some excuse so we couldn't, and still told me we should put my cat down. Before this we called multiple times to get a refill, which the doctor assured us would be no problem to get and encouraged us to call for refills, and still the front desk made up excuses as to why I couldn't talk to the doctor or why the doctor could never get back to me. Needless to say, we won't be going back here.
Thank you again for taking the time to speak with us about your concerns. We appreciate the opportunity to address the issue and work on a plan that will help keep Violet comfortable.
Fantastic experience: Very nice very affordable no issues so far will keep pistol updated my dog Emily needs. Dental work and they are working with me.
we are happy that we were able to help your Emily! Thank you, Michael for your review!
Fantastic experience: My Dog needed Emergency Surgery and I was told it would be $5000 that I did not have. D.D.F.L. got me in immediately and charged only $1,150! Gave them my ID and my debit card and they let me make payments! Literally saved my Dog's Life!❤️❤️❤️
Thomas, we were thrilled to be able to help! Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
Negative experience: I came here expecting discounted vet services. The initial visit was on $45. Im on DNAP and Medicade... and needed discounted services. Unfortunately.. The costs of everything here is the same everywhere in Denver. I was told it was going to $190 for an xray and a UA. They did not send in the UA. I only did the Xray. And would not remove the extra costs from the bill. I was told they wanted to treat the bladder stones with a prescription diet. But they didn't give me the prescription. I had to return and ask multiple times for the prescription. Not a discount..more like a bait and switch service. DO NOT COME HERE UNLESS YOU HAVR NO OTHER CHOICE. *** Response to your Comments. Dear Vet Hospital Staff. I had to come back and ask for my prescriptions twice. Your staff did not provide me with prescriptions. - even though I was told, in my appointment, that they would. I had to pay, leave, and review your documents in my car; then I had to come back and ask for my prescriptions twice for the dog food. The first prescription that was provided to me when I asked, listed a wet dog food that didn't even exist. The second one was only provided to me when I pointed out the first dog didn't exist. I stand by my thoughts and opinions of my experience at your clinic. This place is horrible... and I would NEVER RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.
We're sorry to hear about your experience and that you felt misled about our pricing. We strive to offer affordable veterinary care to all our clients; our prices are significantly lower than many other clinics in Denver but realize it can still be a financial strain on many budgets. In reviewing your record, the urinalysis sample was sent to the laboratory, and our veterinarian spoke with you on Friday with the results. You also were provided with a prescription for the diet at your visit as well as from your previous consult with your referring veterinarian. If you have concerns that you feel have not been addressed in your recent conversation with the veterinarian, please reach out to a manager at 303-722-5800 so that we can discuss further.
Fantastic experience: Overall had a great experience, I brought my dog there cause she had a bump under her eye. I first took her to a sploot location and the vets here were way more helpful and knowledgable on the situation. Only negative outcome was I did have to wait about an hour to see a vet but honestly the visit overall was affordable and the vets were amazing so having to wait longer is fine with me.
Thank you, Anna, for sharing your experience with us!
Fantastic experience: I’m extremely happy how well they took care of my dog who needed tooth extraction. He ended up getting 3 extractions, they were very informative and the price is very affordable compared to other vets! Thank you!!!
Thanks for your support and for trusting us with your pet, Nicole! We are so glad things turned out well!
Negative experience: Went there under the impression that it was a non profit but still got quoted more than any other regular vets I’ve had take a look at my Boxer. First thing you do when you walk in is sign some waiver and representative mentions payment just seems like all they care about is getting paid I’m looking for someone to help me with my boxer not a supposed vet that claims to be non profit that’s used to dealing with deep pocket customers that live in the area. Definitely another disappointment. If you’re looking for a cheap vet and a place that cares about your pet I wouldn’t go here at all haha thanks for nothing
We are sorry that you weren't able to get care for your dog. Dumb Friends League is a 501(3c) non-profit, which allows us to provide veterinary services through our community hospital at a significantly lower cost than most veterinarians in metro Denver. Other low cost clinics in the area can be found on www.pethelpfinder.org. If what you are seeking is free care, there are some organizations that may be able to help depending on your situation and we recommend reaching out to your local municipal shelters for assistance.
Fantastic experience: We use them for all of our pets vaccines & we have had to use them for low cost urgent care when our pit attacked our chihuahua. Staff is always friendly & doctors are informative
Thank you, Jennifer, for being part of our family and trusting us with your pets!
Negative experience: Horrible experience, was told my sweet 6 year old Golden “might have cancer”, I was called back within 24 hours and told she did not and that their lab machine was off, went back for scheduled surgical consult, then told she did have cancer and, “it was bad”. A ton of prescriptions thrown at her that made her miserable, I was judged for being selective about which drugs I wanted to give her and I know what meds were making her miserable with urinary retention, and diarrhea. Then got a call from the Vet accusing me of trying to get a “controlled substance” filled with a prescription I was given for an antibiotic, Took the prescription to King Soopers, who told me they didn’t have the Vet in their system? Took the same prescription to CVS and got the antibiotic no problem. The roller coaster ride has been pure hell, imagine why I don’t trust what they say? They can’t even agree on a cancer diagnosis on my 6 year old Golden baby. I’m going to take her 2 hours away to her regular Vet who has loved her for 6 years, was just far away from where I live now. I Would not recommend you use this place, unless you want to be on this roller coaster of emotions like me, and being judged for doing what you think is best for your fur baby. Gross incompetence and lack of caring. What I choose to treat her with is working well with managing her symptoms and pain. Again, getting a third opinion with a Vet I trust, crying inconsolably is getting old, but getting treated this way makes it worse.
Our hearts go out to you and Mollie; I'm sure that getting bad news about your fur baby was devastating and the communication around her diagnosis was not clear which made things worse during an already difficult time. When our nurse called to tell you the bloodwork was normal, we should have clarified that it did not mean she was cleared from her tentative diagnosis and that was our fault for not saying that. The misunderstanding around the prescription was an issue with the King Sooper pharmacy and was out of our control. I'm sorry your experience left you feeling like we don't care or that you felt judged, which is far from true. We are grateful that you are able to take Mollie to her regular veterinarian and able to continue getting care. Our thoughts are with you.
Fantastic experience: My FurBaby Luthor recently got a toe amputation here at the Dumb Friends League Pet Hospital. They took care of him as if he was their own. We were so blessed to have had an amazing medical staff. Thank you!
We were happy to help, Brittney. Give Luther a hug from us!
Negative experience: The place was nice at first, but once I went to pick up an animal of mine, I had dropped off to be fixed it went to hell in a hand basket. They did surgery on him and then went on to tell us not to let anything get into his cut from the surgery they did but yet they left him in his crate covered in his own pee and didn't even bother to try to clean him he was in there for at least and hour or longer and my pet wasn't the only animal that they did this to from what I saw. I would like someone higher up to contact me, and I'll send them photos because I will also be getting a lawyer in on this because that's not a way to treat an animal after we paid our money to have them fixed since you guys advertise us to do so then proceed to let them lay for hours on end in their own pee and expect us not to get mad when they end up getting an infection. Don't recommend i will not be returning here
Thank you for speaking with me yesterday about your experience. I'm sorry this happened to Oreo and appreciate you bringing it to our attention. As discussed, we perform surgery on upwards of 45 cats per day and while our team strives to clean up accidents in their kennels when they happen, it occasionally does get missed. This is being addressed with the team as we strive to minimize this happening again.
Fantastic experience: I recently got my cat Fiona spayed at Dumb Friends League at Spur and was so pleased with my experience. Affordability wise, they knock other facilities out of the water. To get Fiona spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped I paid $115. As for the facility, it is incredible. There is a separate location for dogs to get checked in to avoid any unwanted interactions. Many people were also getting their cats fixed and the staff was incredibly kind, patient, and kept the line moving. They spent time with each owner, including myself, to review all the processes and wants. At pickup, I was given information from the staff, on a exit paper, and via email. There is a parking lot and plenty of street parking, including spaces in front of the doors for pick-up/drop off. I deeply and highly recommend Dumb Friends League at CSU Spur for your fur babies!!
Thank you for your review, and for trusting us with your Fiona, Daphnee!
Fantastic experience: I have had 2 dogs fixed here..and they treated my babies like their own. And when pick up time came..they made SURE they're clear that the cones on the heads stay on.. because they care. And my babies seemed to be pain free by day 3 and surgery site both times looked nice and clean and just a Great job! TY Dumb Friends League Veterinary Team
Thank you very much for your review, Isela!
Fantastic experience: RIP Butkus. Thanks for helping put my ole pup into a better place I hope and pray.
Tim, we are sorry for your loss of Butkus. Thank you for trusting us with your beloved pet.
Negative experience: I am a low income Senior, just the sort of client this veterinary clinic and hospital is supposed to serve. When I brought in my cat YumYum because he was not eating the vet undertook various tests costing $200 and concluded he had an obstruction in his stomach requiring emergency surgery. I authorized the operation, costing about $1,000, and it turned out no obstruction was found. When YumYum did not eat or drink after the operation I took him to a private vet, who replaced the improper Elizabeth collar with which he had been fitted with a proper one which allowed him to eat and drink. The vet also expressed surprise that YumYum had not been given an ulltra-sound before the operation, which is routine in diagnosing stomach obstructions in cats. I brought YumYum back to Dumb Friends Veterinary hospital two weeks post op to remove the stitches and was charged an additional $135. I also signed a monthly payment contract for the $500 balance on my surgical bill. When a few weeks later YumYum began to vomit and I realized he might still have medical problems that would require costly veterinary care, I called the “financial counselor” at Dumb Friends and asked her to forgive my remaining payments so I could pay for the new care YumYum might need. She refused, as did her boss. Although I can forgive the possible malpractice YumYum and I received at Dumb Friends Veterinary Clinic and Hospital I cannot forgive the hypocrisy of Dumb Friends in advertising its core value and service as being compassion for low income pet owners and their pets, like YumYum and me, and then denying me this financial relief. Based on my overall experience I advise low income pet owners in Denver to avoid this facility. NOTE: In view of the "response by owner," concerning whether ultrasound is considered part of a normal workup for stomach obstruction in a cat, here is what Google AI says: "Yes, an ultrasound is considered a standard test to help diagnose a stomach obstruction in a cat, often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tools like X-rays and physical examinations, as it can effectively visualize the stomach and identify potential blockages or foreign objects within the gastrointestinal tract." This is in addition to the comment of the private vet I had to take YumYum to -- because the Elizabeth collar they fitted him with after the operation was the wrong size and type -- that she was surprised ultrasound was not used before they operated on him.
Dear Mr. Edelson,
We understand that it is both stressful and frustrating to manage a sick pet. However, your assessment of the services you received at our hospital is not warranted. Medicine is not an exact science and often involves some degree of trial and error. The potential for Yum Yum’s surgery to result in a negative abdominal explore, while not the outcome we hoped for, was fully disclosed and discussed with you prior to your consent to move forward with surgery. An ultrasound may be useful in confirming an obstruction, however it is not a standard test and is ideally performed by a specialist which is not available at our hospital. We would love nothing more than to be able to provide additional services to you at no cost, we simply don’t have the funding to do so.
You mention that we lacked compassion because we did not forgive your remaining payments. When we tried to discuss your specific financial situation you were not only rude, but you gave us an ultimatum to forgive your payments or you would post a negative review. As a subsidized hospital, our fees are already generously discounted. We stand behind our medical team in their assessment and treatment of Yum Yum, and maintain that we are an outstanding veterinary resource for families that need financial support for their pets. We wish the best for you and Yum Yum.
Fantastic experience: Back in 2022, my puppy, go sick with parvo. I took him to a emergency clinic, they did the basic exam. I then brought him home and made appointment with CUSpur clinic. They got him right in, they started IVs, antibiotics and antidiaherals and did a stool culture that proved positive for parvo. They kept him for three days. Then he was well enough to come home on meds and a special diet. Their charges were really reasonable. Scrappy is now 2 years old. Handful as always. I appreciate CUSpur clinic for saving him. We had rechecks for about a month. Everyone was always friendly. I also go to the vaccine clinics to update his shots.
We are very happy to hear that Scrappy is doing well! Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
Fantastic experience: I called and scheduled my dog in to have a mass examined and within 2 days they had him in surgery and home. I am forever greatful for their help and their financial relief. I was stressed out about that mass, and don't worry, it was just a fatty mass! Thank you to the entire team here!
We are more than happy to hear your dog is doing well and that we were able to help!
Fantastic experience: They are very cheap, and they treat our baby better than we got treated at ER. They explain everything with details and give us instructions for the aftercare. They are honest on what they are charging and how much. If they tell you a proce is what you paid for. Also, they called the next day to ask how our baby was doing. They don't charge us for the follow-up appointment. We are just very, very glad we found this clinic.
Thank you, Anais, for sharing your thoughts and for your support!
Fantastic experience: SO grateful for Dumb Friends League at CSU Spur -- their entire staff is knowledgeable, friendly/compassionate, truly care for animals, and cautious on how to approach medical care in the best interest of your pet (not scamming you with unnecessary treatment for more $). I will always prioritize bringing my pet to DFL given the high quality care and great price(s). Thank you for everything DFL!!! One thing to note is you do need to call right on the dot at 7am to get a same day appt (they don't pre-book).
Thank you, Ciara, for sharing your experience with us!
Fantastic experience: I cannot thank the team at the Dumb Friends League Veterinary Hospital enough for the incredible care they gave my dachshund, Daisy, during her recent dental procedure. From the moment we arrived, we felt reassured by their kindness and professionalism. Daisy needed dental extractions, and the compassion and attention she received throughout the process meant the world to us. The care they provided was not only exceptional but also affordable—far more reasonable than other places we explored. But what truly stood out was how deeply they cared. The day after Daisy’s procedure, a nurse called to check in and answer all our questions, making sure we felt supported every step of the way. We are so grateful for their thoughtful and dedicated service. Daisy received the best possible care, and we can’t express how much we appreciate their efforts to make this experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for treating Daisy like your own!
Tyler, thank you for such a wonderful review and we are thrilled that Daisy is doing well! Thank you for trusting us with her and for your strong support!
Fantastic experience: I wish that I lived closer, I would go here for all my veterinary needs. They were able to get me an appointment same day. I don’t know if I got lucky or if that happens regularly. Dr Glawe and assistant were awesome! Taking plenty of time to listen to my concerns and also explain diagnoses. He was thorough and meticulous in caring for my sweet fur baby..
Thank you, Kelly for such a kind review! We are glad we were able to help.
Negative experience: Said that from donors they were able to help less fortunate, get care at a cheaper rate, simply not true, what a waisted trip! If adopting an animal in other location near by, then ok. But vet suck!!!
We are so sorry to hear your frustration with utilizing our veterinary services. While our fees are on average 50-70% lower than most veterinary clinics, we understand that our prices may still be out of reach for some pet owners. Feel free to email us at [email protected] and we would be happy to send you a list of other low cost clinics that may be able to help you out.
Fantastic experience: We’re so thankful for this veterinary hospital. After being quoted nearly $3,000 for our cat’s dental cleaning and possible extraction at our primary vet, a friend recommended Dumb Friends League Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur for their low-income assistance and more affordable prices. We called at 7 AM and were able to get a same-day exam, with surgery scheduled just a couple of days later. The entire process—exam, booking, cleaning, extractions, and pickup—was seamless, transparent, and clearly explained. Dr. Holly was one of the best vets we’ve ever worked with. We were stressed about the bill from our primary vet, and reaching out to the community for help led us to DFL. We’re beyond grateful for this facility and hopeful that more people in need will find the support we did!
Thank you for sharing your experience, Nadiyah. We appreciate your review!
Negative experience: If your pet is sick don't go here; if you need a routine service like teeth cleaning or spay/neuter, it's OK. I took my pet in for an illness; i had all the tests done & a "minor" procedure to help move her toward feeling better. The vet said all tests looked like she was well & fine + her condition would be resolved with the procedure & meds I was to buy. Just over a month later, my pet has died. It is my opinion that the student vets should not be (ultimately) responsible for diagnosing sick pets... it is my addition opinion that they actually killed my pet by this inadequate staff being the only people reviewing sick pet test results. Lastly, I think very few people actually get out of there without spending at least $500... in fact, it truly seemed like they have a formula in how they handle owners & service suggestions to ensure that (minimum) $500 "goal" is met. While they do charge a little less than regular vets, this devastated pet owner will do whatever it takes to get a REAL animal Dr when a pet needs help. I would rather have my pet still here with me & be in painful debt, than in painful loss of her; which reminds me: The cost of tests, procedure & meds were suggested be put on the Scratch credit card they intoduced me to - bc i could not pay for all they wanted to do to my pet - well... I'll be paying that off for the next 7 months, so in the end, I'm still in debt but have lost my pet. I miss my her beyond description and wish i NEVER went to this place and trusted her to them. Please think twice before you take your ill beloved animal to them. _____ REPLY to the comment left in response to my review: I find it grotesque that the posted response to above essentially stated it was ME who neglected and caused my pet's death. But then again, am I really that surprised to be treated as such? No, not at all. There is NO LOG IN MY CALL HISTORY for the office reaching out to me post procedure . if I overlooked an unrecognized number, there are other ways to reach me such as text message or email. On top of feeling my darling cat (see my Google profile pic here-she was kitten) was just a cog in the wheel of 'business' there, u insinuate I'm non caring nor careful pet owner. Its aggregious. Im the quintessential "childless cat lady" w/pets that are the ONLY family I have in my world. The 4th year students you refer to were FAR more focused on the biz end of things, in my opinion; Which I gleaned as a pressure on them, not their preference. while I think they were doing their best to manage all things they are tasked to do - the actual focus on medicine seemed very clearly as secondary. I would have preferred to receive a reply acknowledging possibility of changes needed there, to make the death of my pet at least count for SOMETHING. instead, the reply was all about me not doing enough to ensure she was being properly monitored post-procedure (ie, catching some unknown/no caller ID phone call in this crazy world of robo calls and scammers) & also spending more money I dont have to do more tests only to be sent away w/ "all looks fine'. ..She DIED & I trusted (& PAID) for her to be thoroughly checked out BY YOU. I followed all instructions given after the assurance her only problem was constipation alleviated by the procedure & meds I bought. I did everything told to do; She was fine then suddenly Sun night she let out a needy cry & 1 hr later she was dead. I held her thru that hr trying to soothe her as she suffered final death rattle breaths all that time. It was an horrific experience; right or wrong, I fully blame your clinic.& myself for believing in it. Pls do not post another reply pushing how u did everything right & I was the one who fell short. Clearly something was missed & she paid the ultimate price, at only 10. I BEG you to take my review of our (Toodles&me) experience into consideration. It is my sincere hope future patients & owners will be spared this awfulness. Every life is precious & I pray you will not let her death fall into nothingness. She deserves better than that.
Dear Crissie,
Our deepest condolences to learn about the passing of your beloved cat. We are sorry to learn that you did not have confidence in the services that were provided to Toddles. Respectfully, we disagree with your assessment and maintain that our hospital and medical team provides high quality medical care to our community. We are a teaching hospital and as such, patients and clients may be working with a 4th year veterinary student, however every student is closely supervised, and all recommendations and treatments are reviewed and approved by a staff veterinarian before moving forward. Furthermore, all procedures and surgeries are performed by a staff veterinarian; student participation is in a supportive role with direct supervision from our veterinarians.
Bloodwork and radiographs were taken of Toodles during her visit last month; based on the results of those tests there was no indication that her condition was life threatening. Unfortunately, the health of a pet can change drastically over the course of a month. Multiple attempts were made to contact you after Toodle's visit but we were unable to leave a voicemail; we would have welcomed an update and been happy to reevaluate her condition if at any point you had continued concerns. We welcome additional conversation if you have further questions or concerns. You may call our hospital at 303.722.5800 and ask to speak with a manager.
Fantastic experience: This is a wonderful place! The people that work or volunteer are amazing. This is a very difficult job you see such sadness a lot of the time. The joy when a forgotten animal gets a new forever home makes up for the sadness. They have state of the art facilities that offer so much to the public. There are two operating rooms, one to do dental work on cats or dogs. The other for spay or neuter for dogs or cats, as well as other surgeries, that you're welcome to watch! I've watched them grow and it's a joy to see what they do and to know it's growing all the time! These people are Heroes! Save an animal from being alone, they will adore you forever. Thank you for your time
Star, thank you for such an amazing review and for supporting our cause!
Fantastic experience: I recently had my fur babies Lexi and Louie fixed. My kittens came home and did beautifully right away. It's such a great resource where you get great care that is cost effective. Thank You!
We are happy to hear Lexi and Louie are recovering well. Also thank you for your support, Raelynn.
Negative experience: Absolutely DO NOT use I regret not spending the Hundreds the other vets had asked this place cut my cats nails after telling them I wanted NOTHING extra done other then fixed and a microchip. Upon picking my boy up they had him laying in his carrier completely soaked including his surgery spots. Once getting him home and cleaned up as much as I could I noticed his trimmed nails all still floating around in his urine he was laying in. They are absolutely not clean and do not care to discuss anything with the pet owners because in there own words they are to busy!!! Seems like they put more money into the building then actual care and good staff for the animals. COLORADO SUPPORT SOMETHING DIFFERENT!!!
Hi Charli, we are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with your experience at our clinic. As a high volume spay/neuter clinic, we see a large number of patients each day. Patient care and safety is our top priority; our team ensures each pet is clean prior to putting them in their carriers after surgery. It can be challenging to address accidents after this time because some pets are too stressed for handling after anesthesia, which was the case for Alvin. We hope he has recovered and is doing well back at home.
Our check in paperwork does indicate that every cat gets a nail trim, and are sorry you missed that. Please call our hospital at 303-722-5800 and ask to speak with a manager if you would like to further discuss your visit.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful place, top notch service. I felt very safe bringing my furry friend here, and he was cared for very well. Definitely recommend if you can't afford a full cost vet! I also appreciated that they have separate dog and cat lobbys
Thank you, Reed, for your kind words and sharing your experience!
Fantastic experience: What a wonderful business and wonderful people! We came with our 19-year-old dog today and it wasn’t a day to euthanize. They offered to help us and take her back, but we just couldn’t leave her to pass on without us…and they went above and beyond and made it possible! I wish I had better words to express the gratitude and relief, and the immense caring that these women all showed us today! It’s nice to see, feel and to experience! Truly, a gem!! So thank you to all the staff for proving there are such good humans in this world!
Thank you, Bethany for your kind words and sharing your thoughts.
Fantastic experience: They were VERY COMPASSIONATE although I felt they could have helped my dog more. I will most definitely continue to support them & might even look into adopting a dog from them in the near future!!**I took.my new.dog Diva there for an ear infection & they took care of her like the true DIVA she is!! I love this place ❤️ & will always recommend, donate & support CSU SPUR DFL!! THANK YOU
Thank you for your support, Tish! We would love to help you find a new family member!
Negative experience: I called early this morning and luckily was given a same-day appointment. I arrived and check-in was good, everyone was nice. It turns out the mole/ skin tag that appeared on my dog did not need to be removed as it's normal for his age and breed. When asked if I had other questions I asked about dental services and after I was filled in on that, I asked if they offered payments plans/ financial assistance. The woman was again nice and friendly and said she would go get somebody who could help us answer any financial questions. In walks an older woman, she didn't greet us, only handed me two pamphlets. "what do you want to know". She didn't explain what they were just said that they didn't have appointments until the end of next month, "so it should be plenty of time to save up money because your dog is your responsibility". Of course my dog is my responsibility, it's why I was there to being with. Her tone and attitude were rude. Everything up to the point she walked in the room was smooth. She came off rude, uncompassionate and uncaring. As if I were asking for things for free. I couldn't get her name because she wasn't wearing a badge nor did she introduce herself as I said earlier. Shout out to the kind ladies!
We are sorry to hear your otherwise pleasant experience at our hospital finished on a sour note. Excellent customer service is something that we strive for, and we appreciate your feedback. I would love the opportunity to address your concern but am unable to track down who you were working with based on your username. Please call our hospital at 303-722-5800 and ask to speak with a manager so that we can get further details. Thank you again.
Positive experience: The techs and vet were great! The techs were super informative and got us seen right away after being at the emergency vet. I’ve had questions through my cats PU surgery and they got back to me right away several times. They made the process super easy. Thanks for saving my buddy! Only complaint was whoever was working at the front desk that day. They were more concerned about the color of my cat than him being blocked. I am thankful for the techs that gave us the care we needed.
Thank you, Dawn, for posting and we were more than happy to be able to help your cat!
Fantastic experience: I recently took my cat in for an asthma diagnosis after he had an episode on a Sunday, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. The staff was incredibly nice and accommodating. Dr. Arik Smith and his assistant, Bella, were thorough and very informative throughout the entire visit. They never seemed annoyed or rushed, which is a refreshing change from my usual vet experiences. I also appreciated how they conducted most of the exam in the main room, keeping me informed and involved. The facilities were super clean and well-maintained. Overall, I highly recommend this vet for their exceptional service and care.
Thank you, Riley, for your support and your kind words!
Fantastic experience: Most amazing group of veterinarians, techs, assistants and CSR’s I have ever met. Every single person who works here is compassionate and always going the extra mile to help out pets and their people!
Thank you, Nicole for taking the time to post and your kind words.
Fantastic experience: Due to a misunderstanding on my part we showed up on a day they weren't taking patients for a euthanasia. They gave us a list of places that would take us and we tried to call a few but were unable to get in. They made an exception and saw us and helped us on a very difficult day for the family. I had my dog since she was close to 2 years old and kept her the last 15 years, hardest thing to make the decision on and rather then make me draw it out they proactively helped. They were incredibly helpful and comforting and they have my gratitude and thanks.
Thank you, Jake for posting your experience. We were glad that we could be of some help on such a hard day.
Negative experience: Apparently this is no longer a low cost vet! Not only was I charged $60 just to be seen, but after waiting 45 min although I had an appt, the vet barely looked at my dog then gave me a quote for another dental future appt (2 mos out) that was higher than anywhere else in the metro area. The meds to hold him over cost $35 and $13...your sure not doing anybody any favors!! Thanks a lot! Dog is still in pain and you got paid for doing nothing!
We are sorry to hear you were not happy with our fees. Our consultation fee is $45 and includes a comprehensive exam by the veterinarian, which is well below the average cost in Denver. We understand that although we offer affordable care, our services may still be out of reach for some budgets. We would be happy to look into your specific visit and see how we might be able to assist further, but are unable to based on your user name. If you would like to discuss, please call 303-722-5800 and ask to speak with a manager.
Fantastic experience: Woke up to my youngest poodle showing symptoms of an obstruction. After a trip to the ER I was given the info for CSU Spurs as an affordable option to save him. I cannot express how thankful I am for the work they put in to save Hagi. He’s not the brightest guy sometimes, but he’s still here and living his best life. Thank you so much for all you guys do it was a weight off my shoulders coming here!
Thank you, Amara for trusting us with Hagi, we are happy to help!
Fantastic experience: It is a good place to go for next day emergencies (M-S), you do have to call at 7am for same day appointments. I had quoted my English Bulldog’s eye surgery at a different veterinary clinic and they had quoted us for 6k. I was so thankful that our surgery costs were lower than 1000.
Thank you, Lucy for your support!
Fantastic experience: I am absolutely blown away by this wonderful vet hospital!! My cat needed some dental work done, and everyone at Spur was wonderful to work with. My cat was treated with the same love and care as they might treat their own pets. Everything was explained clearly and all our questions were answered well. Being low income, it was wonderful getting to receive more affordable care for my pet! It was also very easy to call afterwards to ask questions, and everyone was always happy to help. Being connected with CSU, Spur works with veterinary students to provide them with education. Students, and even the public, are able to come watch procedures as they happen! I was able to be informed of when my cat's surgery was starting, and got to sit and watch into the operating theater through some large windows. There was a wonderful woman who was there to talk about the Spur program and about the work the vets were doing, while I watched them perform the surgery on my cat. A school group even came through while I was there to learn about the wonderful work these vets do, and my cat got to help be a part of educating them! Even under anesthetic, my cat was treated very gently and kindly. I even watched the vet tech give my sleepy kitty some nose boops and was VERY amused. All in all, I cannot recommend these folks enough. I am so grateful for the amazing care they gave my cat and also me, the worried pet parent! My cat has healed up fantastic and is back to his normal antics. While I hope it's a long time before either of my cats need a vet visit again, I know exactly who to go to if they do!
Thank you, Viscera for such a wonderful and kind post! We are glad things went well for your kitty and we want to thank you for your support!
Positive experience: The people are nice, although dropping off and picking up your pets is assembly like. You stay in the hallway. Still, I've not encountered any problems with the spay or neuter procedures. I will continue to use the Dumb Friends League.
Thank you, JoAnne for sharing your experience and for your support!
Fantastic experience: I swear they were trying to keep the Gnar Gnar after he was getting neutered. Reason being is because of how sweet and how soft he is. This place was very nice and treated my pet with care I highly recommend it!
Thank you for your review, Amber! Please give Gnar Gnar a scratch for us!
Fantastic experience: They did an awesome job. For a place that preforms mass procedures, my good boy came home looking like nothing had happened except a shaved belly. He is not in any pain, other than that, that comes from the neuter procedure. I thank them greatly for the service that they provided for me, and for all they do for the community.
Thank you, Charles for such a kind review and trusting with you pet.
Fantastic experience: Holly (a vet) and (I think) Michelle at the front desk with Jasmine the dog… are amazing!! Both very friendly and informative and patient. Thanks you two!!! Looking forward to my little guy having clean teeth, soon! Thanks for the great care and bedside manner!
Thank you, Jamie for your support and your kind words!
Fantastic experience: I just wanted to say thank you again to Doctor Martin! I took my dog in that was having issues jumping and was very lethargic. The care I received from the vet assistant and the doctor were great. They were both very professional and kind. I’m happy I was able to provide the care my dog needed thanks to these services being affordable. I will definitely come back if I ever need an urgent visit that my vet can’t get me in for and wish this was a general practice that I could come to regularly! Thank you guys!
Thank you, Beth for trusting us with your dog and we are glad to hear things went well. Thanks for sharing you experience with us.
Negative experience: Dear Dumb Friends League, I am writing with profound anger and disappointment over the negligent treatment my puppy, Rose, received at your facility, which directly contributed to her unnecessary death. Your practice of leaving animals unattended overnight, especially those in critical condition like Rose, is inexcusable and cruel. After being returned to us, her condition worsened rapidly, and she passed away within a day due to the lack of proper care and attention she desperately needed during her stay at your "hospital." Additionally, I am appalled of your policy requiring dog owners, whose pets are diagnosed with parvovirus, to sign a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order, effectively sealing the fate of these animals without considering the wishes or hope of the owners. This policy is nothing short of forcing owners to agree to the premature end of their beloved pets' lives under the guise of a "company policy." It's an unethical practice that prioritizes policy over the well-being and potential recovery of animals. Given these circumstances, I unequivocally refuse to pay any outstanding bills from your facility. It is outrageous to expect payment for "services" that contributed to the decline and eventual death of my pet due to your neglect and inhumane policies .Your claim to assist low-income families with their pets is a mockery, overshadowed by practices that endanger the lives of those same pets. My experience and the loss of Rose under your care demand immediate changes in your policies and practices. I trusted your facility to provide compassionate care and was met with negligence and heartbreak. Reconsider your approach to animal care and the enforcement of inhumane policies immediately. Sincerely, Ethan
Dear Mr. Whiteley,
Please accept our sincerest condolences in your loss of Rose.
As you know, parvovirus in such a young puppy has an extremely guarded prognosis even with the most aggressive medical treatment. Our staff dedicated hours of nursing care to give her a chance, and we are sad that she wasn’t able to recover.
Your concerns regarding parvo patients being unattended overnight are valid. As a non-profit, donor-subsidized veterinary hospital, we don't have the resources to staff the hospital 24/7. You sought our care, presumably because the emergency hospital where Rose was initially seen at was financially out of reach for you. We are transparent about this practice. The risks with leaving a critical patient unattended overnight while receiving intravenous fluids and medication almost always outweigh the risk of sending and the patient home with no medical care. We stand behind the decision to hospitalize Rose while staff was not present rather than letting her suffer at home. Urgent care services are not open over the weekend, which is why we needed to discharge Rose on Friday evening. We did recommend transfer to an emergency practice for continued care, which it seems you did not pursue.
Our policy to not offer resuscitation efforts to animals with parvovirus is based on experience. Resuscitation in a critical two pound puppy that is compromised with parvovirus has a zero percent chance of survival without advanced intensive therapies and care, treatments that are beyond our capabilities. Even with days of ICU hospitalization at a specialty hospital, survival of a patient that has decompensated is negligible. As a subsidized hospital, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of the donations received. Putting resources towards advanced treatments into a patient with a poor prognosis only limits our ability to help dozens of other animals.
Our hospital admittedly has limitations on the scope of care we can provide. Our fees are generously subsidized by donations with the owner paying only a portion of what it costs to provide the care. Our staff pours their heart and soul into their patients and your comments are damaging to the medical team that makes a commitment to help families that cannot afford care elsewhere. You are grieving a difficult loss, and we hope that you grieve gently and get to a place of understanding and compassion.
Fantastic experience: Amazing facility with kind staff who were able to get my dog in the next day for surgery when all other vets had a two-week wait, and at a fraction of the price. While it’s less convenient that the doctors are frequently rotating out (it was difficult for me to get in contact with the vet who operated on Pippa), it makes sense since it’s also an educational facility. I’ve been in a few times now and everyone has always been extremely friendly and caring!
Thank you, Leann for your kind words and we are glad we were able to help your Pippa!
Fantastic experience: My cat passed away in the early morning hours today. I went to the dfl and they were kind to me. The Cremation was affordable in the process was simple enough to deal with in my grief. The woman at the counter actually started to tear up as I was already crying. It kind of made me feel better. They allowed me to look at my little man one last time. Thank you
We are so sorry for the loss of your beloved cat, Daves. It is an emotionally draining experience and if we were able to help you feel supported we are grateful. Thank you.
Negative experience: If your animal has anything more severe than a broken bone, don't come here. They don't hospitalize, no overnights. Service is great and the Doctors are good, but they need to extend their services to make sure your animal makes it through after their surgery. The building is nicer than any hospital you've ever been to, CSU and Denver have money but they won't care for your animal when they need it most.
Andrew, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and suggestions. We are so sorry for the loss of your beloved Issac and know you did your best to get him the help he needed. Although we are located on the CSU Spur campus, we do not receive any funding from CSU for our community work. We are able to provide our services at a reduced rate due to generous donors in our community, and simply don't have the resources to extend services that include critical and overnight care. We certainly recognize the need and will continue to help make veterinary care accessible for as many animals as possible. If we can help your family in the future, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Fantastic experience: Dumb Friends League Veterinary Hospital is incredible! Dr. Holly is amazing. My 16 year old cat desperately needed a large cyst removed that I kept putting off. She also needed a teeth cleaning. Dumb Friends was able to take care of both! Everyone we encountered was friendly and compassionate. The building is huge and I actually ended up unknowingly parking behind it. A man who was getting off of work actually went out of his way to let me know I was going in the wrong way. Their facilities are clean, modern and bright. I like that they have separate waiting areas for cats and dogs. I had an issue with my credit card and thought I was going to have to reschedule last minute. I explained the situation and they STILL had us come in! Talk about putting animals first. Dr. Holly called me twice to give me updates while my cat was having her surgery and dental cleaning. I cannot say enough good things about Dumb Friends and Dr. Holly. Making the first appointment was a bit of a hassle. The automated phone system kept disconnecting my call. I had to call a few times to get through to someone. I think I eventually ended up having to press zero as soon as it connected or it would disconnect. I would recommend calling right as soon as they open.
Thank you, Kyle for trusting us to take care of your cat and we are happy everything went well!
Positive experience: Went today for a first time visit and overall it was a pleasant experience ..the vet actually looked at my cat who's been having medical issues for a while now even suggested meds that might help him .but if it don't help than I need to take him back for diagnostic testing (blood etc) but the thing is I heard from multiple people that this place offers payment plans for stuff if you couldn't afford it but when I asked today I was told "everything needs to be paid upfront before anything " but yet some people get payment plans? . I get vets aren't cheap but being on a limited income and have used all the care credit allowance, I'm tapped out and what happens if I need to take my cat back ? ..I can't afford hundreds of dollars for testing than whatever treatment is needed . So I'm praying the medicine I got today will help cause God knows I can't afford to take him back
Thank you, Isabel for taking the time to post your experience.
Fantastic experience: My little service dog had 19 teeth pulled today. He is doing fine. Sleepy still but out of pain and recovering. The staff was friendly and helpful. The doctor took the time to explain everything to us.
Thank you, Mayree for trusting us with your beloved pet. Great news that he is healing well!
Negative experience: On Friday December 15th I took my 8 month old siamese kitty here that I purchased from the dumb friends league only 2 months prior. He was breathing rapidly I was told he had a fever and she gave him a kitty tylenol and said he sounded clear and she didnt hear no heart murmer and he should be fine so I took him home he seemed to be doing ok he was eating and drinking but still was breathing rapidly and on Christmas eve at 1:30 in the morning his breathing got so bad I had rush him to a Er Vet and they told me his lungs were filled with fluid and thats not normal and that he possibly had fip and that fluid in the lungs was not normal or reversible so I had no other option but to Euthanize him. It was a extremely traumatic experience especially being that is was Christmas eve. I had to pay out of pocket 400 dollars that i didnt have, to have him euthanized. Thanks alot dumb friends league i knew something was going on with him so i took him to you guys hoping to get an answer but yall dropped the ball and sent him home and said nothing was wrong.
