Johnson Animal Clinic is proud to serve the Louisville KY area for everything companion animal related. Our veterinary clinic and animal hospital is owned and operated by Dr. Jerry Bode and Dr. Becca Hite, who are licensed, experienced Louisville veterinarians. Johnson Animal Clinic was originally owned by the late Dr. Johnson and opened in the 1970's. Our passion for animals drives us each day to provide the best medical care to all of our patients. We have been in the Hikes Point community for decades, and take pride in servicing our neighbors and friends! Our goal is to exceed your expectations and keep your pets as healthy as possible while also accommodating your requests as well.

Negative experience: I was hoping to find a local vet in Louisville. I actually chose to try this one based on the reviews. The appointment process was smooth and I was able to get in within a day. The front desk was friendly when I arrived. I only had a minimal wait in the waiting room. While waiting inside the exam room, it was very loud and hectic sounding on the other side of the door, unprofessional, IMO and it was unsettling to my pet. When the vet entered the room, he, nor his assistant introduced themselves. I was a new customer. Once I explained my concern, he didn't act like he knew what to do. I recognize that diagnosing animal patients that cannot communicate with you is likely very difficult, but I was hoping to get more answers. I left feeling no better than when I arrived, and I didn't feel confident that my pet received the best care possible. It was all very strange. It is possible that this vet is better with routine visits. I am a health care provider of humans. I can't imagine being like, ok, I don't really know what is wrong, but that will be $330+ and here is the credit card machine to pay right now, in the exam room. So, sadly, even though he was nice enough, I would not recommend this vet. Perhaps another vet in the practice. I have heard good things about another vet there and I should have requested him I suppose.

Fantastic experience: I’ve had nothing but positive experiences there. When I had to put down my previous dog, they were so compassionate and emphatic about such a difficult decision. When I eventually got a new puppy I immediately started taking her there. I’ve seen every doctor and they all are kind, Efficient, and knowledgeable. I recommend them to anyone looking for a vet.

Negative experience: Service here is extremely slow. Last time I had to wait an hour just to get a yearly booster shot for my pet. Very frustrating.

Negative experience: I would never recommend this veterinary clinic to anyone who cares about their pet. The way my sister’s dog’s passing was handled was cold, careless, and unprofessional. In one of the most painful moments of our lives, we expected compassion, honesty, and basic decency, but instead was met with dismissiveness and a complete lack of empathy (saying we didn’t need to pay that day and then demanded payment after we put her down, told us they would take back the unused and expensive dog food and then backtracked, and other terrible communication from front office that is too long to list. The staff made our dog’s final moments feel clinical and rushed, as if they were inconvenienced by our grief. There was no clear communication, no kindness, and no sense that they understood what it means to guide a family through losing a beloved pet. It was heartless. Losing a pet is devastating enough having it made worse by a vet staff (the vet was ok) who shows no compassion is something I would never wish on anyone. Please think twice before trusting this clinic with your animal’s life.

Fantastic experience: I have been bringing my cats to Johnson for almost a decade now. Everyone at Johnson has always been so accommodating and responsive. My cat, Sid, has recently had some issues that have required him to be seen about once a month. Sid is such a sweetheart at home, but whenever he comes to the vet he is a VERY naughty boy. I always feel so bad that the vets have to deal with his attitude, but everyone at Johnson has always been so patient and so kind toward him no matter how bad he’s being. I’m extremely grateful to have a veterinary clinic that I can trust so much with my fur babies. I highly recommend Johnson Animal Clinic.

Fantastic experience: I have been taking my furbabies to Johnsons Aminal Clinic since 2002. They are so caring and very devoted to going above and beyond to caring for all my furbabies. They take time with them and answer any questions I have. I never feel rushed when there. Fantastic experience: I called and was able to get an appointment within a couple of days. Dr. Reynolds was great—professional, caring, and took the time to explain everything clearly. The vet tech, Keith, was also fantastic—personable, knowledgeable, and incredibly friendly. He made both me and my dog feel at ease.They have stellar customer service every time we visit. Fantastic experience: I switched to Johnson pretty recently and I’m so glad I did. The staff and vets here are kind, compassionate, and so good at what they do. I specifically appreciate Dr. Stickler, who was more thorough with my chronically ill cat than any vet has ever been. When my cat unfortunately passed away, I was sent a card with sweet, handwritten messages from the staff, even though he’d only been seen here a handful of times. I’m so grateful my pets are in such good hands here!

Fantastic experience: By far the best vet I have taken my pet to. Friendly staff and vets, affordable service and they treat my dog with such kindness and respect. Our dog doesn’t do well with other animals or in stressful situations and they truly go above and beyond to make sure he feels comfortable. Dr. Hite and Michael Ann were wonderful. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: I have taken all of my pets here for a long time and have always loved it but yesterday in particular made me appreciate them even more than ever. I had a scare with my pug and they got me right in did a full exam and eased my mind. Dr. Murphy really took the time to answer all of my question and kept me updated throughout ever test they where running his vet tech I believe her name was Kasey was also such a sweetheart. Fantastic experience: Dr.Bode and his staff are all so caring and love all the animals that come to them for care. My cat Fiona was spayed and had the best care from the beginning of the front desk to the aftercare of my Fiona. Dr. Bode followed up after she came home. Fantastic experience: I honestly love this place! The new office is nice and clean, the staff is always so friendly and caring. Our dog is pretty hard to handle and they always help her with grace and without judgement. We love Dr. Reynolds. She saw our baby was so scared and she immediately got on the floor to talk with us so as not to scare her further. We love this place!

Fantastic experience: This clinic does an excellent job caring for both pets and their owners. Not everything about caring for pets is easy, but in my experience they make the load as light as possible. And it always seems clean which is a big plus! There are two things I can point out that go above and beyond for me: 1. my cat gets super anxious so they let me call and check in from the parking lot and then they take us straight to a room when it is ready avoiding the lobby altogether. 2. The staff called to check in on my cat after a sick visit to make sure she was improving. I would definitely recommend this clinic!

Let’s face it, no one really wants to take their little friends to the vet, but JAC makes it so easy and treats our babies with such love and kindness that it’s a very pleasant experience. We absolutely love Dr. Bode, as well as everyone else in the clinic, from the other vets to the staff, they all show concern for our babies and us.

Fantastic experience: We have taken our dog here since we got her in 2018 and they have been great! We love Dr. Hite and Dr. Murphy! Both are so kind, patient, thorough, and gentle with our dog. Prices are reasonable. Staff is really friendly! Easy to get appointments with and get RX from. Great new updated building off Breckenridge Ln! Since we have moved further away, this is the only doctor/service we did not change to something closer to us because of the level of care we and our pup recieve and the trust we have in them. I will not trust just anyone with my girl, but I know she is taken care of with them even if I have to let her stay there for a bit and come back depending on what needs to be done.

Fantastic experience: We are sadly moving too far away to be able to come here for our vet anymore. I have been bringing my babies here for 3 years and I have never once felt like the doctors were not listening to me or like my babies were being treated badly. We usually saw Dr. Reynolds, and I really preferred her, but the other doctors we saw there were just as amazing! They try to listen to EVERYTHING you tell them so they get the whole picture, they explain things so well, and they do not seem to judge when you’re in a tough financial spot so you have to figure out a cheaper option to get the things done that you need to for your pet’s health (I.e. not being able to buy top notch food or expensive meds). I find them to be very fairly priced for all their procedures and meds, which is what drew me there in the first place. I will never ever forget having to go put our dog to sleep, partly because Dr. Reynolds sat there and shed tears with us as she did that, while comforting us by walking us through the whole process step by step. They are so caring and empathetic while still being so professional! The staff there make everything much easier than it could be, and I am just forever grateful for them. And so so sad to have to leave!

Fantastic experience: Johnson is wonderful! My 3 pups have seen all the vets and they are all amazing! I rarely have trouble getting an appointment within a day or two if necessary. Prices are very reasonable!! MY Family has been with them for 20 years now!!

Fantastic experience: For the past 5 years Johnson Animal Clinic took excellent care of our rescue dog, Linus. From the scheduling, to the cost, to the care itself it was always top notch. And when he got an ailment that was unfortunately incurable they provided us with a peaceful way for him to pass on. Negative experience: It saddens me to leave Dr. Hite. She is the best vet that I have I met 35 years! I have no choice. My floors are concrete, I have issues with my hands, often breaking 72.00 bottles of insulin. Dr. Hite listened and understood, assured me that she would not let me be without insulin, but her office staff does not honor that agreement. I am constantly getting reminders of my other two cats to bring in for services (one is so feral he cannot be touched, the other cannot ride in car, the one that needs insulin, I never receive a call or email for the one that is on insulin and thyroid medicine twice a day. I am constantly having to borrow Vetsulin from a friend. I have to leave the best Vet because the front office “plays Dr.” and will not relay my messages. I called the week before June 3, asked if Josie needed to be seen, as I was starting a new job, and would not be able to take off, I was told no, not until Fall. Three weeks later, insulin denied from Chewy. No Insulin again! FYI! (Syringes at Chewy $15, at Johnson $35.00 and you don’t have to pay a charge for using a credit card, you have to PAY A CHARGE for using a credit card at Johnson’s. SHAMEFUL! I will buy from Chewy even if they are more expensive! You can deny all you want. Chewy changed things!! We don’t have to by from Vets! No insulin again!! Thank you Dr. Hite for your kindness to my kids and me!
Hello Ms. Whitlock, we apologize for any miscommunication regarding your medication refills. Our front staff is required to follow all protocol regarding dispensing prescriptions and as explained, Dr. Hite has been on vacation and will contact you when she returns. However, we have consulted our other doctors and your pet's patient history to be able to provide you an additional refill until your pet can come in for the required bloodwork. We understand that some pets have extenuating circumstances that makes vet visits extremely difficult, which is why we are trying to be understanding of your situation but unfortunately protocol is determined by our standard of care. We also understand that this is a frustrating situation but please be cognizant to treat our staff with respect so we can better assist you. We have alerted Dr. Hite of your concerns and she will be in touch as soon as she can. Thank you for your continued support of Dr. Hite and we hope to remedy the situation.
Fantastic experience: We’ve had nothing but great experiences here, but today was unmatched. Everyone here is so kind and they love on my pets just like they were their own. I have a highly anxious dog who can be really difficult to examine and they all took their time to help her relax and even managed to squeeze in a nail trim. The care here is just unmatched and I always leave feeling like my pets are in great hands.

Fantastic experience: I have been taking my dogs here for around 5 years and every person I interact with are so amazing. Everyone my dogs interacts with takes time to love on them before their examination to make them feel more comfortable. My male dog is afraid of heights so the vets often do the exam on the floor with him. They go over multiple options for treatments and medications. They have even helped me price compare different medications before I purchase them. We have had a few emergencies with our dogs and they have squeezed them in between patients. I just cannot say enough good things about them.

Negative experience: Shame on you Johnson Animal Clinic!! My mother brought her elderly dog in for a checkup on Thursday. Instead of professional behavior, she and her pup were treated by 2 very irrational employees. The vet tech snatched her dog and took it to the oxygen tank( dogs get excited and nervous when they travel and are in vets offices FYI) then a vet came in without an ounce of compassion and suggested she put the dog down. There were no issues with the dog other than being very old, moms an excellent pet parent. No assessment. No other options. Euthanize him. My devastated mother took her dog home with plans to return so she wasn't alone. After having the dog home, and rational minds prevailing, she did not return. I write this review as I watch this dog scamper across her back yard. Playing. He is old. His days are numbered. He is not suffering. I am livid that a so called professional veterinarian would just automatically go to euthanasia without even speaking with the owner or taking time to show compassion and understand the entire situation. She asked me not to call the clinic and you are welcome for that, but she didn't say I couldn't let everyone else know what happened. Pet owners beware. They don't have time for proper treatment, but I bet she gets that bill in detail!! ***** There was no misunderstanding, you showed no compassion that day. Your reputation is growing and it's not very favorable. Your own staff is even in the mix. You can change the narrative all you want to make yourself look good, but you were so wrong. This little pup is still alive and thriving because Mom didn't listen to your rash unprofessional judgement. He received great care there until you came along.
Hi Ms. Risinger. We are so sorry for any misunderstanding that may have occurred when your mother brought her pet in. We assume you are meaning Beemer . We believe it was very professional to triage Beemer, who presented cyanotic (low oxygen/purple tinge to tongue), abdominally breathing and crackles in the lungs. Because your mother thought he was having more bad days than good, she asked for a quality of life exam. After the doctor had a very compassionate discussion with her, your mom elected not to put Beemer through any diagnostics or further treatment. She reported his decline with vomiting, inappetence, and previously diagnosed collapsing trachea. Therefore, the doctor offered humane euthanasia. Beemer was placed in Oxygen, was still in moderate distress, and your mother wanted to return with friends or family and euthanize.
We do hate that you see the visit in this way. In emergency situations, our dedicated staff and doctors move in to action to properly assess each pet. Your mom called to come back to work in for euthanasia on her own accord, but never returned. For that reason, we called her multiple times to make sure nothing had worsened at home with Beemer. Of note, we actually didn't charge your mother for anything-exam/oxygen/monitoring. We hope you understand that the doctor was looking out for your mother's and her dog's best interest with every recommendation.

Fantastic experience: I if I could give higher stars I would. This animal clinic is the best veterinarians I have ever been to. Everyone is extremely friendly and kind and I feel all of the animals take really kindly to them as my little sister immediately cuddled and bundled with one of the staff as she came out of the carrier. You also receive tons of information about what type of problem your little family member has and other problems that can be a possibility or come to fruition. They also give little colars that the animals will most likely love and appreciate.

Fantastic experience: Everyone at Johnson is so polite and helpful. I have seen Dr Hite for years and she is amazing. She truly cares about your furbabies and explains everything to you. She doesn’t just do stuff to charge you money; she only does if it is absolutely needed. She lets you as the furparent make the decision best for you and only offers advice about it. They are awesome with communication as well. If your baby has a procedure they call and check a couple times as to how they are doing or if you have any questions.

Fantastic experience: 1/30/24: This was our first visit but they were super accommodating to my reactive Aussie and let us wait in our vehicle and when it was our turn, come inside through a back door straight into a room. It was such a relief not to have to go through the lobby by everyone else. The tech and vet were also super nice.

Negative experience: My poor dog was really sick asked to see my reg vet Doctor and they gave us a fill in and dident tell us . She couldn't even find out what was really wrong just guess. Gave her some meds and aft3er a few days she didn't seem right. So I called and the girl told me that they would call me back 3 days later my dog is dead ! I will never ever go back!

When I called this morning, I was attempting to review her visit and our communications with you, before we were somehow disconnected. Fantastic experience: I took my daughter (my cat) here to get her shots. They are very nice and do a great job to try and make your baby feel safe. This is where I take my baby when it is time to get her tags again. You can get the tags for 1 year or 3 years and the prices are the cheapest I found in Louisville. A great place to take your baby if you need a Vet. I would recommend to anyone to go here.

Fantastic experience: My veterinarian decided to take a much deserved retirement, so I was in the market for a new vet. I ended up at Johnson due to a recommendation and the close proximity to my residence. I was very nervous about the change. Let me tell you, they were great! Doc Murphy seemed knowledgeable and friendly, and Nolan quickly became a favorite of my boy Chunk. Doc Hite even came in to say hello! I greatly appreciated the atmosphere, professionalism, and friendliness. Negative experience: I went there several years ago to have my pet euthanized & they didn’t bring enough medication into the room. Halfway through had to get up to go get more. Leaving me alone with my dying dog who’s still alive & fighting me (bit me in the face). TO DO THAT TO A DOG IS CRUEL & THAT’S AN UNFORGIVABLE OFFENSE. I was traumatized & collected all my records from them on my way out - never planned on going there ever again & they KNEW IT. Two days later I got a letter in the mail saying they didn’t want me as a customer anymore…. After I’d already told them I’d never be back. 100% Unnecessary & 100% unprofessional. I’d literally go anywhere but there. I’d give them zero stars if I could. ** update- as I stated in this review, I’d decided to sever my relationship with this business after their substandard treatment of my pet & i feel it was unnecessary to contact me AGAIN as I’d made it clear I was never coming back. Their letter writing was 100% unnecessary as was their response to this review.

It is always a difficult decision to let a client go, but your behavior in the clinic towards the staff was aggressive and unacceptable. We are sorry that we were unable to accept you back as a client when needed, but we realized you would be better served at another veterinary clinic.

Negative experience: My dog had an abdominal and neuter procedure at this office, which was also his regular vet office. The day of surgery he was nervous and did growl, but made no other move toward staff. The surgeon coded him as a “dangerous dog” and asked my husband to stay until the anesthesia took effect. I have no problem with this as he is a bigger dog and extra precautions are understandable. My husband asked multiple times for him to be put on the table before he fell asleep since he weighs 190lbs., but the surgeon refused. This lead to them being very rough with my dog when he was fully asleep trying to get him on the table. We probably should have stopped everything and had them wake him up at this point, but unfortunately we didn’t. I came to pick him up that afternoon and was there within 20 minutes of being called. The vet tech and the front desk receptionist both told me what a sweetie my dog was and that they had been sneaking back to love on him when they could. I was brought to a back room that had enclosed kennels on bare concrete. It was very cold in this room. There were also no staff posted in the room and didn’t seem to be a highly frequented area. My dog was laying on the dirty bare concrete floor in a puddle of his own urine that was ice cold. The urine and dirt were soaked in his abdominal and groin incisions. He was also violently shivering and felt cool to the touch. He did not have a cone or collar on to prevent him from getting at his stitches. The staff member that had escorted me back was upset by his condition and offered to clean him off. They helped me soak the urine off of his and lightly clean his incisions. His body temperature was very cool. I took him home and covered him with blankets and it took 2 hours for him to become a normal temperature for a dog. I attempted to clean his wounds again later that evening. At that time I noticed he had loops of stitching material outside of his skin. I called the office and the surgeon said that was normal. As an ICU/Surgical nurse I know that is not best practice as they can catch on things and be pulled. 2 days post op he was having some GI complications and I called to inquire about suggestions for treating this. The surgeon who performed the operation told me to discontinue his antibiotics through the front office staff. I will admit I got a little heated at this suggestion and asked for the practice owner to review as we had been a client of his at his previous clinic. The front office staff called back after speaking with Dr. Bohdi and said to definitely not discontinue his antibiotics and to try some other things. We have made the decision to return to the previous clinic we were seeing Dr. Bohdi. I’ve thought a long time about whether or not to add this review, but decided that others need to be warned to ensure the same thing doesn’t happen to their dog.
Hi Ms. Park. I am so very sorry to hear that you had a bad experience. We always want to strive for the best care for our patients, while keeping our staff safe. We assure you that your baby was well taken care of, though we did have to be very cautious due to his demeanor. The technicians had just changed blankets for him, but do realize that he had an accident right after. We are addressing this within the clinic, and one of our owners will call you directly!

Fantastic experience: Johnson Animal Clinic doctors and staff are outstanding. I have been going since 2008. I’ve had small and large dogs. Now I’m a first time in house cat owner. The doctors there have always treated my pets as their own. Excellent care and very reasonable pricing. They are trustworthy, kind and empathetic when it was time for our pets to pass away. Fantastic experience: Johnson Animal Clinic has taken great care of my dachshund nearly for ten years. Because my dachshund was a rescue who came with some preexisting conditions, some of those issues have been difficult to navigate but Johnson has done so compassionately and professionally. For example, when my dachshund's back back legs suddenly became immobilized in 2018, I was educated about the various treatment options, referred to an appropriate specialist, not pushed into expensive surgery (I opted for the eventually successful approach of strict crate rest), and counseled about the various preventative measures I could take. As another example, when my dachshund ate a dangerously high amount of dark chocolate around Thanksgiving 2021 and the emergency treatment he received seemed to escalate his already severe heart murmur even higher, proper diagnostics were taken, then I was given the option to have a specialist confirm Johnson's recommended medication as 100% appropriate (which I did), then once that prescription ran out Johnson agreed to refill it for me when Blue Pearl would not (providing we do prudent checkups every six months) — and even thoughtfully provided me with a means of automating refills online, which has saved me some time every month. I am so thankful to have Johnson as a traditional vet for my dog and will continue to take him there!
