Negative experience: I don't like this clinic at all and I wish I could afford a "real" vet for my boy. He is a malnois, part of the German shepherds, so he is big and intimidating although he's a big baby. I don't feel that they care about him, or many others. It takes hours, and then more hours to get in so it's an ALL DAY EXPERIENCE! My boy was left there overnight for surgery and since that day, (no problems before,) he will shake all over and scared to death. I can't imagine how they treated him as he can be stubborn if he's scared or without me. And another thing, they won't let me go back with him although I could keep him calm. They seem cheap but they get you with medicine and shampoos and unnecessary items and make you believe you need them. I could go on all day. I dislike this place enough to tell you.

Fantastic experience: I just wanted to share my thoughts. How wonderful the staff and the other patients were to me this morning getting my dog in to see the vet early to relieve her suffering. It renewed my faith in human nature❤️

Negative experience: EDIT *Their response to my review is gaslighting at its finest. They never once addressed the fact that we would not have come there for ”service” if we hadn’t been misinformed by the staff answering the phones. The staff on the phone was the initial person to inform us about time limits, which we were still within, hence the reason we came in to schedule an appointment. We were never told there was a time issue by staff while there. We were simply and plainly told the surgeon would not perform this procedure for us and also that they are rarely performing them at all due to customer complaints afterwards. If their staff answering the phones is not informed, as we were told while in the office, why are they giving out information as if they are? It caused us to waste an entire day and be charged for a “service” we were told they would not perform for us. (Not to mention being talked to and treated disrespectfully when trying to understand why we were told to come in by one staff member and told we couldn’t be helped by another). Just sharing our completely unprofessional experience with them. Make your own choice, folks! * We called to inquire about a procedure. We explained our entire situation to the person on the phone and were told we needed to bring our pet in as soon as possible to be scheduled for this procedure. We spent an entire day driving there to get in line, then back home waiting to be called, then another 50 minute drive back when it was our turn to be seen. When we get to our room, we realize the only physician who performs this procedure was not there to speak with us or evaluate our pet for themselves. The physician who was evaluating our pet did not know anything about the procedure and had to leave the room three times to make calls to the absent physician to ask them questions. After 10-15 minutes of confusion we were eventually told that even though we were very clear about our circumstances on the phone, our pet was not eligible for this procedure and that they were rarely performing this procedure at all anymore due to people coming back and complaining about it. We were not familiar with this procedure and genuinely did not understand what the problem was, or why we were told to come in for an appointment they cannot help us with. It was also cold outside and we’d brought our five week old puppy for this appointment who was not yet fully vaccinated and risked exposing him to other animals, under the impression they could assist us. When we tried to ask questions about the procedure and situation, they brought in an a larger gentleman and another staff member as if we were being irate. I’ve never been treated this way in my life. We asked why we were misinformed and they told us we can’t expect the staff answering the phones to know everything. Seriously, that was their answer to us wasting an entire day and being made to feel like we were causing a scene for wanting to understand what was happening. They were condescending and apathetic to our situation. Particularly the elderly woman. We left without paying, since they were aware of our situation prior to scheduling and then admitted this wasn’t a procedure our pet was eligible for. We didn’t receive a service, we didn’t come out with any knew knowledge, only frustrated and embarrassed. Months later, I received a letter from a collection agency for the visit and a late fee. I was never contacted by their office after the day of service by mail or phone. The only notification I received that they were actually going to bill us for this botched visit was the collection letter for $26 and some change. They’re really going to send that to my credit report after the experience we had with them. No apology, no attempt to make things right, just a ding to your credit report. This happened months ago and I wasn’t even going to leave a review until I received the collections notice. It can sit there for seven years, just like this review. I wouldn’t trust this disorganized, uninformed bunch with any of my pets again.

Ms. Taylor,
It seems a level of miscommunication took place in this incident, but a service was still completed. There is a certain process in place for the procedure you were inquiring about. Due to the time restraints of your situation, we could not complete this and recommended it being done elsewhere. A service was still completed with this consultation, thus the charge of $26.

Positive experience: Had an emergency and they took care of us, very appreciative. Just don't care for no appointment guideline, have to sit and wait hours to be seen if they are busy

Fantastic experience: They have been so good to my cat, even in her final day. They are very compassionate and treat the pets with care.

Sheurrie Ervin Posted on Google 2 months ago

Positive experience: Too many people have to wait 4 to 5 hours before they can see you

Fantastic experience: They are absolutely amazing people here!! The doctors truly care and give great service! The wait is long, but this is due to them being in high demand.

Negative experience: They claimed we owed them $80 from 2020, which is fine, we were going to pay the $80. Then after my husband started counting the money out on the counter she picks up the $50 bill and says he also will have to pay a new patient fee of $50 and argued with him refusing to give his money back she snatched off the counter. This place is a joke how can someone owe you and also be a new patient. This place just lost not only my business but the business of all my friends and family. Keep that $50 im sure it went in your pocket anyway.

Fantastic experience: Had a dog i had to have put down. They were vary helpful and supportive and even sent me a condolence card. Would recommend them for any of your pet needs. Also they sent me a condolence card, it was vary thoughtful.

Shareese Kimble Posted on Google 2 months ago

Negative experience: Everything is about money with them. They don't care for your animals. It's about how much can they run your bill up. My dog got an allergic reaction to his shots. They told me it would be a after hour charge a $50 then they told me $15 to give him some Benadryl after my bill was already $230. This place is a joke.

Negative experience: Went to get my dog Chico's nails clipped and the young black vet tech with braids took him back and brought him back with in 2 mins if that when I got home I noticed his nails had not really been clipped! If you have staff like this they should be fired!

Fantastic experience: Went to sign in for my dog who had Pyometra. They got her right in and saved her life. Dr. Sam and the staff are the best.

Bob Reams Posted on Google 3 months ago

Fantastic experience: Dr Marsha just put down our 16 year old dog after a couple years of a downhill slide, it was time. Our hearts are broken and she spent time with us and made the horrible bearable, not to mention the care and time she has spent with us over the last couple of years. Lucy was a beautiful, wonderful heeler/border collie mix, we lost her yesterday and I'm glad we chose Shively. Great vets, absolutely most reasonable also. You have to sign in and return when they call you, it's an all-day affair, but for Lucy's euthanasia we called and walked right in. Highly recommend them...

Fantastic experience: Our family dog of 13 years has cancer and she needed an operation. It was a little costly but what isn't these days. It was well worth it. We are on day 6 after surgery and she is doing great. They are very busy so be prepared to wait but it was worth it for the price and staff was very friendly and professional.

Negative experience: If you have small pets or rats, please read this. I brought two of my young girl rats in for euthanasia due to tumors. This was already traumatic for my daughter and me. But what happened in the hallway outside our room was unbelievable. A female vet tech working that morning (Mixed or Hispanic appearance, medium/heavier build, longer curly dark hair) stood less than four feet from our open door and loudly mocked us for wanting our pets' bodies back for burial. She said things like: "Why would anyone want the bodies back?" "Are they having a little wake?" "I bet they have tiny coffins!" She laughed loudly, looked directly at us while making these comments, and continued for several minutes. My daughter started crying. This all happened during an end-of-life euthanasia -- a time when compassion should be the priority. When we reported it, all we received was a basic, scripted apology from one of the front desk clerks, who wasn't a manager. No accountability, no reassurance, nothing. She even said she was looking forward to seeing us and our babies "again". Small pets deserve compassion just as much as cats and dogs. The behavior we witnessed from this vet tech was unacceptable and completely unprofessional. Because of this, we will be taking our pets to Fairleigh or Dixie from now on. I can't believe the doctors would allow a vet tech with this behavior to work there. In fact it has me questioning whether or not they treated our babies gently and with compassion during their last few minutes on earth. I am posting this so other pet owners are aware of our experience, and so management knows exactly which staff member was involved.

Michelle Hamilton Posted on Google 4 months ago

Negative experience: Staff are rude, they are always ready to put your dog down rather than save them, they have a process where u sign up and come back when they call you but then they put you in tiny exam room for 2 hours. They charge different amount for same meds every month you go, they're record keeping is horrible, there was a $2300 difference in printed records than my paper receipts, then they want to charge $25 to cut pet meds, they do not care about the pets it's all about $ to them. Quick to try to sell you an urn and put your dog down. She's stillkcomf her best life on her meds at another vet. 6 months later

Rachel Anne Posted on Google 4 months ago

Fantastic experience: I had to euthanize my pet today who has been with us for 17 years. The staff treated me and my pet with care and compassion. I am very grateful for this during an emotional time.

S O Posted on Google 5 months ago

Negative experience: I'd like to express my deep disappointment regarding your recent decision to terminate our relationship as clients of your hospital. After years of entrusting you with our pets’ care—investing time, money, and unwavering patience—I am stunned by the abrupt and dismissive manner in which we were dropped. This situation arose from a routine request by our pet insurance provider for medical records from all facilities our pets have visited since birth. Rather than cooperating or offering assistance, your staff responded with hostility and ultimately chose to sever ties with us. This reaction not only lacks professionalism, but it punishes responsible pet owners for having insurance and trying to do the right thing. What’s especially troubling is that I was not even provided access to the records in question, leaving me unable to fulfill the insurance request. I was explicitly told by a staff member that I would be sent the full records for all the dogs I’ve had under your care, yet to this day, I have received nothing. This lack of transparency and follow-through is unacceptable. I always brought my dogs to your clinic for nail trims, wellness checks, and sick visits. This was not a place we visited randomly—it was their primary care provider. My dogs were familiar with your staff, trusted them, and felt safe there. Forcing us to find a new clinic has caused them unnecessary stress and disrupted their continuity of care, which is especially heartbreaking given how much trust they had built over time. We have never complained about long wait times, scheduling delays, or other inconveniences. We remained loyal and patient, even as the quality of service and staff demeanor noticeably declined. This hospital used to be a place of compassion and care—where the front desk staff treated every client with respect, and rudeness was never tolerated. That culture seems to have shifted dramatically, and not for the better. A clinic should never drop a client for being responsible. I hope you take this feedback seriously and reflect on how your policies and staff interactions affect long-standing clients who genuinely care about their pets. We expected better—and frankly, we deserved better. Was told to contact and I did. No one ever contacted me. The girl who took the message didn't seem to know what was going on, so I explained, and she said someone would contact me back. This was days ago.

Fantastic experience: Our puppy got super sick with parvo and almost died from it and Mary Jane and her crew saved her and treated her amazing great customer service the wait is long but it is always well worth the wait we appreciate all they have done for us so much

Fantastic experience: They take great care of our dogs, but the waits can be extremely long due to the fact that they don't take appointments.

Patrik Posted on Google 5 months ago

Fantastic experience: This place is totally awesome. The staff are totally respectful of your pets and you. I've had to put down 2 family dogs in the past month. The 5yo due to a freak accident and the almost 19yo because she was just ready to go. Both lived extremely great lives and were spoiled beyond belief. The staff was very sympathetic and caring and even when I return to pick up the remains, they still extended their condolences. The were open on a Sunday which was amazing and you don't have to make an appointment. The place is super busy, so that just goes to show you, that they are an excellent pet care facility and respected in the community. Words can not express how happy I am with this place and the staff. TOTALLY AWESOME!!!

Negative experience: If I could give negative stars , I would. where to start. My husband and daughter took our lab mix here to get checked out for a growth he had that had popped My husband, being once a combat medic, stopped the bleeding at home, but took him to get evaluated , to where they were told, it isn't serious and to come back in 6 hours. they did go back to where it was stated it was serious and he needed an operation by his vet. they proceeded to have them buy the " cone of shame " to stop his licking on it, also had to pay out additional money for a " drive by diagnosis " the lack of compassion, or true treatment from getgo makes me think these people are out for only money and not the well being of your pet.

Izzy Wilson Posted on Google 5 months ago

Fantastic experience: Katie is awesome and they care a lot.

Myia Brown Posted on Google 6 months ago

Negative experience: Unless you want your fur baby to die and pay for unnecessary bs they lie about DO NOT EVER BRING THEM HERE! They literally do not care about the animals at all! The only thing they care about is how much money they can get from you!

Jason Hanson Posted on Google 6 months ago

Positive experience: I've been bringing my dogs here for 17+ years for great care abducted pricing. The wait sucks and last time I went they added $50 to bill for "new pet/patient" fee. Shively is the only vet she sees and her last rabies shot was a 3 year one.

Fantastic experience: I love Shively and all the doctors on staff that take care of my big babies. I took my big boy Bandit in last night and I’m so thankful for the compassionate staff always willing to help you out. Bandit is 70 pounds and don’t care for smaller male dogs so I ask for a male employee to come out to my truck and walk Bandit in for me because he is so strong. The employee also took him back out for me while I was taking care of the bill. Dr Marsha took her time with Bandit and I she listened carefully and gave me such great advice . Dr Marsha is amazing and Bandit loved her and her assistance that handled Bandit. I also learn something new when I go to Shively. I’ve been at shively many years they have taken care of all my babies and when the time comes to let them go I always have them put to sleep and cremated. I could feel the sympathy from the dr’s during those sacred moments. I wouldn’t trust anybody but shively animal hospital for my babies.

She was paying hiundreds of dollars to be told he had a stomsch virus. Then he bagan with other issues and she had to psy to keep taki g ji. Back with no solution. Negative experience: Scan my dog for a microchip for what. I told you it's my dog and that the lady would of told me if he had a microchip. My dog came from an owner with five dogs. She also wanted me to adopt his twin. I have video footage and pics. Stop assuming things. Also, let your staff know not to sweat what people name their pets. Second time this has happened. Sometimes you guys act so odd and rude.

Fantastic experience: Took our cat in today for an emergency visit. I was only there about an hour in total. I understand this isn't always the case and sometimes the wait is hours long. They got us checked in and back so quickly considering the craziness they had going on with others. The employees were so kind and helpful. The doctor was straight forward and put my mind at ease. This whole establishment deserves so much praise. They were all so kind and polite despite other customers yelling at them, a waiting room full and people coming in and calling non stop. I was overwhelmed for them just from all the chaos yet they all handled it so professionally and efficiently.

Amber Morgan Posted on Google 7 months ago

Negative experience: 9/12/25 I mean, it's hit or miss, man. Sometimes I'm really happy with the service. sometimes it's awful. They tend to implement new "rules" based on how theyre feeling that day. I drove there after work one evening about a week ago and paid for vet care for three animals. I was able to make it just a few minutes before their close time listed on Google. I was allowed to sign in, no problem. No complaints at all regarding that visit. However today, I had to bring 2 out of 3 of those animals back for new issues. Got there a couple minutes before their close time (posted on Google as 7pm). They insisted that if I wanted to sign in it would be an extra $150 for an "after hours fee" . I informed them I drove an hour to get there and could not afford the extra $150. They did not care. I have suggested updated hours on Google to match their "last sign in" which they have stated is Mon-Fri at 6:50pm and on weekends at 4:20pm. So, in my opinion, that means they CLOSE at 6:50pm on weekdays and 4:20pm on weekends. If you arrive any later than that, expect to pay a $75 "after hours fee" per animal. Hopefully this saves someone else the gas and time that I wasted this evening. 11/01/20 I have a learning disabled mother who lives on a fixed income. She has been going to Shively for over 10 years. She has now had 2 dogs pass away while using them, so long time. The most previous dog she has pass away had canine AIDS and a compromised autoimmune system. He was about 3 pounds. 2 days before he died, Shively diagnosed him with pneumonia in his right lung, gave him some antibiotics, told my mom he'd be okay and 2 days later, he was dead. 3 years old. I understand that he had a compromised immune system and wasn't going to live long to begin with. She had him cremated through Shively. A staff member at Shively told her that, for her unwavering loyalty to Shively over the years, they would cover the cremation. This was a blessing, because like I said, she lives on a very fixed income. My mother leaves dated checks for them if she cannot afford the services at the time. It is the beginning of November and she already has checks she's left for them dated in January, to pay for services they've provided for her now deceased pet. Unfortunately, my mom being learning disabled, didn't think to get the name of the staff member who told her that and trying to figure it out would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack since their staff team is total chaos with 20 people working in one tiny space. And if that's what they need to do to accommodate people, fine. But when it comes to situations like this, someone needs to make sure staff is being properly trained. Dr. Joyce tried to holler that she "doesn't know what staff told her that and there is a charge of $140". Keep in mind, this dog weighed 3 pounds. First she called to try to figure out what was going on, and then I called separately. It's really sad that Shively is typically viewed in the community as the only veterinary clinic that is not money grubbing and doesn't take advantage of low income families. I am here to tell you Dr. Joyce proved that stigma wrong today. They should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of a disabled, low income woman. And she was so happy when she found out they were going to "cover" the cremation because, like I said, fixed income. I would understand if it was a 100 pound dog, absolutely. This one was 3 pounds, and when I think about it, maybe that's why the staff volunteered Shively to do it at no cost is because she knew how tiny the dog was (my mother said it was a young girl she spoke to). Either way, Dr. Joyce refused to honor a pledge that her improperly trained staff promised to a learning disabled individual, especially after the 3 year old dog died 2 days after they told her he would be okay. She slept with that dog the night it died. I couldn't talk her out of it. I hope they're real proud of themselves.

Negative experience: Injected something funny in my elderly dachshund, so weak she couldnt walk after seeing the vet, plus mouth started bleeding. We will never be back! Almost killed my little girl! The wait was lengthy-6 hours. Finally we had to stand in the office to be taken back. I could possibly believe this wait if I was living in New York City, but this is Louisville, KY. People are not that eager to visit a vet office. Something bad off about this place. Needs be shut down by the health department. Lucky to have escaped with my dogs life. Also seen 3+ dogs coming out dead wrapped in black trash bags. Looks heartless to me.

Negative experience: A few years ago my dog was hit by a car, we called ahead of time they told us to come and when we got there no one came to help. We had to wait until a nice black lady told them they need to come out. In the mist of them just standing around, my dog took his last breath. I just dealt with it and hoped they meant no harm. TODAY, I was in there getting medicine for my other dog and I witnessed the same thing! This lady came in for help and they all just looked at her. No one was coming to help until a younger lady finally asked her name to pull paperwork. I just cried as I thought about my dog and knew it was no mistake that happened a few years ago. They just simply have no urgency. Truly heart breaking. Edit: the doctor took the time to call and will work on talking to staff. I do appreciate her reaching out to know more.

Fantastic experience: The vets are knowledgeable and take the time to provide personalized care in an empathetic manner. We have used Shively Animal Clinic for nearly 20 years and have no desire to look elsewhere. Hands down the best vets and staff we have ever had the pleasure to work with and all our pets have loved them as well. We refer them any chance we get. Remy and Kenji approve.

Fantastic experience: There are not enough adjectives to describe this place so just all the good ones. Yes they are incredibly busy but they have found ways to make it easier on everyone and they never say the doctor will be right with you because they won't but they will get to you as soon as they can and you will know right up front if it's a 6 hr wait or a 2 hour wait. But everyone knows that. What is so awesome about them is that when it's your turn it's your turn they don't rush you and they always have time for one more question and you can tell that it's all about the animals - I just think they are wonderful. Oh yeah the prices are pretty great too .

Negative experience: I don't know enough to write a review yet because I've been in the waiting room now for over 3 hours. I got here when the clinic opened at 7:00 am. My dog was sick so I took him as a walk in. I was told I'd be seen in less than 2 hours. My dog still hasn't eaten and if he was as sick as I thought, he'd be dead by now.

Fantastic experience: We took my little baby girl Ladybug to Dixie to let her go to rest, and they were incredibly compassionate and gentle. It was one of the toughest days of my life, made a bit easier because she is now at peace. Thanks to the staff at Dixie for your kindness.

Negative experience: Let me say I have been very patient with this clinic and I have had faith in them since 2018 when I first started bringing my dog there at 6 weeks old, he is now seven. I'm not always pleased with the lack of information that I get each visit when he has his allergy breakouts, they offer no solution or what can I do at home in between visits. 2 weeks ago I asked them for my dog's medical records and immunization shots and I never gave them the reason why I wanted these things nor did they ask which as a patient you ate entitled to get those things with proper notice. I was told if I received them that my dog would have to come back as a new patient which was mind bothering considering I only wanted the things so that my dog could go to a boarding hotel while I was away out of town. When I called them today I was told since I requested the records, they assumed I was taking my dog to a new clinic so he would have to come back as a new patient. Then they said I would be charged a 50.00 fee for being a new patient and 50.00 for the medical records since it takes time for them to repair, I'm sorry but isn't that the admistration part of the job, I was appalled. I then told them that they cannot assume anything especially when they were wrong. My dog has been going there for seven years not once every three years but yearly for shots and other visits. That just confirmed to me that they don't value their patients who are regular visitors and that they are just numbers and all Shively clinic cares about is money, and making up bogus charges. I can see if I told them I wanted his records to take him to a new doctor but again they did not ask and I did not offer because I did not feel the need to since they ate obligated to give them to you. But anyway I am now taking my dog to a new vet and goodbye to that small lobby, small front desk, overstaff front desk, standing around doing nothing place.

Fantastic experience: It was among wait, not the 5-6 hours I was told but a few. I received my phone call, returned to clinic, received good care, got just what I needed. The exam wasn't long. Would definitely recommend this place, will be returning with mine.

Seejay Polaski Posted on Google 8 months ago

Negative experience: Wouldn’t recommend taking your pets here unless it’s an emergency and even then I’d look for better options. Two stars because the vet techs were super kind and helpful as I was going through it while having to leave my dog overnight to be hospitalized. I have nothing negative to say about the techs. Obviously I can’t speak for every vet on the premise but Dr. Mason Gauss provided some pretty biased subpar care. I brought my dog in after he had an extreme amount of blood in his stool. Through my own diagnostics on Google due to the color of the blood I was aware this was either pancreatitis, infection, parasites or severe GI upset and inflammation (maybe bordering on infection) due to eating something problematic. I have a new cat, the dog had gotten into the litter box, parasites seemed like the most likely option to me but I’m no medical professional. Dr Mason came in asked what happened, I explained and offered to show her pictures so she could assess the severity of the situation, she declined, first red flag, she told me we could admit him or try conservative at home treatment, I opted to admit him believing it would be in his best interest to have some testing etc. The only question this woman asked me I was what food I was feeding. From that moment on she had a bias and it didn’t matter what I was going to say to her. I feed, in her words, “a holistic brand”, mind you I feed what is recognized as a top of the line kibble that is higher rated than the overpriced Hill’s science diet that paid off her vet school to brainwash her that she continually tried to push on me. Because the food I feed has a high fat content, she was determined it was pancreatitis. She did bloodwork. It wasn’t pancreatitis. She STILL sent me home with speciality food and attempted to harp on me that I needed to change my dogs food that he’s had no issue with for 10 years and she couldn’t even bother to take 10 minutes to do a fecal float. Now, 2 weeks later, it’s confirmed the cat has worms. All my animals could’ve already been dewormed and fine if she had bothered to thoroughly do her job and diagnose my dog properly instead of letting her vision be clouded by her own professional bias. If I had been able to take my dog to his normal vet I would’ve still spent the same $500 I spent to have him hospitalized overnight and I would’ve left knowing what was wrong with him and having all my animals treated. Instead I spent $500 for him to be rehydrated, received subpar care that treated symptoms rather than diagnosing and I guess for her meaningless lecture. Furthermore, getting any information from this place is pulling teeth. She told me upon leaving SHE would call me within a few hours about the bloodwork. I had to call the clinic before closing (mind you I left before noon this well over a few hours later) to inquire about his bloodwork. I was told they’d call the next morning, by noon I still had heard nothing until I called for an update. Finally she called me and told me to pick him up later in the day around 4-5. By 4:05 they were then calling asking if I was coming to get my dog and when. I was already on the way but it’s insane how you can not communicate about my animals care while he is in your care but if I’m even slightly burning into your time (mind you I was well within the time frame given she did not say be there AT 4) you suddenly know how to work a phone. And once I got there I still sat in a room waiting for over 20 minutes before they brought me my dog. Our regular vet at Bannon Woods has kept my dog for a few hours to run tests and called multiple times in the time they had him to let me know what was being found and what they were doing. We would not have gone here were they open and knowing what I know now, I’ll look for other emergency options going forward. And Dr. Mason, if you see this, please do better.

Fantastic experience: We are incredibly grateful for the care you provided to our beloved Olive during her recent illness. While many might see her simply as a rabbit, to us, she is family. Thanks to your attentive care, she is now back to her energetic self, happily hopping around the house just as she always does. Sitting in your lobby, I observed people coming in with their furry companions, each with their own heartfelt stories, some of which moved me to tears. It takes a special person to work at an animal hospital, facing the job's ups and downs with such compassion and dedication. Thank you for being there for Olive and for all the other animals and their families.

Fantastic experience: They were very helpful when my dog ate cob from the corn and guided me over the phone as to what to do. They even followed up numerous times to make sure my fur baby was doing ok. NOTE: There is a 3% credit card fee and a $50 dollar first visit/ not checking in within a year fee as well so be prepared.

Positive experience: I will say this place is awesome they made my 1st experience very pleasant.... Now a week after my dog's service I went back to purchase treats that he loves from this place it took the young lady almost 20mins to find my file (she finally asked for help and someone found it immediately) but even afterwards I explained her which treats and brand and the price she still took her time searching for the treats on a chart (I purchased these same treats a week ago that were given to me by the clinic they chose the treats for me) needless to say 35mins later I walked out with no treats I was gonna board my dog here but if you can't find paperwork that's not a good sign.

Fantastic experience: First things first- the way that myself & My Sadie were treating from start to finish is AMAZING! That doesn't even cover it! I was not made to feel like I had done something wrong, I wasn't made to feel like I shouldn't have her, when I couldn't pay for her services by myself. The staff helped me set up an account so that anyone could call in donations to help save my Sadie! The wait was long, but 100% worth it. I feel that in a bigger emergency, we wouldn't have waited as long, but that shows their priority and caring for everyone's babies! All the staff were amazing ! Shout out to nurse Andrew for being so kind and comforting Dr. Mary Jane FUCHS THANK YOU FOR SAVING NOT ONLY MY BABY BUT MY SONS SERVICE SUPPORT ANIMAL! OUR LITTLE BABY IS ON THE ROAD TO RECOVEY ! I WILL RECOMMEND ANYONE TO THEM . THANK YOU EVERYONE ON THE TEAM VERY APPRECIATED FOR YOU ALL!

Fantastic experience: Yeah the wait is long, but they are the cheapest vet you’ll find and they provide exceptional care. I have had to visit many times for my dogs over the years and they are always super kind and gentle. They are also straight to the point, and provide the exact care my dogs need without the unnecessary extras for an affordable price point. It’s no wonder so many within this city choose this vet office, of course there is going to be a wait. However, they are very understanding of your time and give you an estimate of how long it’s going to take (usually hours), but you can go home and they will call you to come back when it is your turn to be seen. Come with the right expectations and you will not be disappointed.

Fantastic experience: The staff was very friendly. We took in a bird got checked in and was taken back almost immediately. We did have to travel pretty far and the bird was hurt pretty badly. They listened and then took the bird for examination. They gave her antibotics and went over what we need to do for the next week. I can't remember if the providers name was Megan or Melissa, but she was amazing with our little bird! And the cost was very reasonable. I appreciate them being there and showing kindness to us!

Negative experience: DO NOT go here!! I’ve taken my dog here since 2019, thru the pandemic and tried bringing my new dog here! They did nothing but give my dog trauma and PTSD and they only care about $$$$. My dog is sick and I needed help, after I’ve spent $5-6K there, they refused to let me pay some upfront and the rest in 3 days! My dog is pooping blood and is very sick. If it was up to them they would let my dog die. They don’t care! Run from this place!

Negative experience: I've been going there for years but the last two times I took my dog there for the same issue and was given the wrong diagnosis and dismissed then I called back to tell them and they wanted me to come in for another visit to get medicine which should of happened the first visit. They have become more interested in money than treating my dog properly smh.

Fantastic experience: This place is fantastic! This was my first time going, so here's some things to know: -Get there early because there will be a wait but the wait is So WORTH It! -If you go on a Saturday, see if Mrs. Carol is there and if she is, ask if you could have her as your nurse. She did wonders with my dog, who is terrified of the vet -It's not as expensive as other vet offices. I hope this review helps all animal parents who have animal babies that are terrified of the vet have a better experience ❤️

Negative experience: I had to update my experience, unfortunately: The staff is great, and I wanted to point that out, but my last visit turned into more problems as a result of our visit. I returned to this location due to a guinea pig of mine that displayed walking struggles. They evaluated her and sent us on our way with pain medication for her. 2 days passed since my visit there, and I noticed my guinea pig was scratching aggressively, which I had never seen her do before. After taking a good look at what the cause of her itching was, I discovered her having guinea pig lice. This is not something I have ever experienced before or even knew it was a thing. I did take her to another vet, and they confirmed it to be guinea pig lice. It was still in the early stages, so it was easy to manage, but it was still disappointing to have to spend more money on an issue that did not exist prior to my visit. Previous review: I have come here twice and have had a great experience each time. It is about an hour from where I live, but they are absolutely worth the drive! They are always very nice, and I love their reactions to my little guinea pig. They have been very thorough and loving toward him with each of our visits. The parking can get a little tight during their busy time, but I don't usually have issues getting in and out of the parking lot.

Fantastic experience: I had to come in on February 19th of this year to put my baby boy down. The staff were all very sympathetic and understanding, which I really appreciated. They gave us ample time to grieve after he passed, which I appreciated dearly. I hated to have to be at the vet for this reason, but everyone there made it that much easier. After he passed, a tray was knocked from the counter onto the floor out of nowhere, and it made me feel really nice to know my buddy was still with me through death. They even sent us a sympathy card in the mail and were still very kind and professional when we picked up his ashes. Pricing wasn't too bad either, only $260 for euthanasia + cremation, and that's simply because we wanted his ashes back.

Negative experience: Shively is the best animal clinic I’ve ever dealt with! It’s extremely obvious that the entire staff love and care about the animals they are treating. They get very busy because they have the lowest prices around so there is usually up to a 3 hour wait for your animal to be seen for any routine maintenance or treatment. Emergencies are taken quicker depending on the urgency of the situation. They don’t make appointments but will allow you to sign in and then go home and they call you about 20 minutes before it’s your animals turn to be seen. Very kind and caring and compassionate staff. I highly recommend this animal hospital! Update: I no longer use this clinic since they seem to have stopped caring for the animals and now it’s all about the money. They wanted me to bring my senior dog back in and leave her as collateral after surgery to remove a large growth from her side. I had forgotten the credit card I planned to use at home and told them I’d be back in a few minutes to pay the remaining balance after using another card to pay more than 1/2 of the bill. They told me to bring my scared and traumatized dog back inside and leave her until I came back and paid. Obviously I said no but did come back and pay the balance 10 min later. I’m disgusted that they think animals lives are bartering chips!

Negative experience: My mom asked my husband to sign in her dog for emergency treatment. When he went up there, he didn’t know who to put for the doctor. When my mom called Shively to figure things out, she was hung up on. The staff completely skipped over my husband and refused to help him and looked at him like he was stupid. My mom’s dog is dehydrated and having pretty bad issues. The staff is unprofessional and unhelpful, lacking the basic empathy required in such a field.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Sam took amazing care of my pet despite her immense needs. he took my concerns seriously and when it was simply too late to save her, he was empathetic and understanding and even waited after hours for me and my pet to arrive for her passing. i will always be grateful. thank you, love fearne.

Kyle English Posted on Google 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Very affordable and willing to work with you in a hard situation. Dr. Marsha is a very kind, empathetic and knowledgeable vet who helped my family through a hard and dark time and we are truly grateful to her. The clinic can be a little chaotic by nature of being a walk in clinic and the wait times can vary although I'm not even sure if this is something to fault them on considering how much they manage to get done. I would advise maybe considering an emergency hositpial instead if your situation is crucial for time due to the unpredictable wait times but for minor emergencies and regular check ups I absolutely reccomend this buisness.

Negative experience: First I would like to share that my family has been going to Shively for over 60 years. Last wed my dog started coughing uncontrollably and I called them. It was about 7:30 so they were technically closed. I told them I would pay the after hours emergency fee and they (Dr. Mary Jane) refused to see my baby. They told me to come in the morning and sign her up at 7am. I wasn’t sure she would make it thru the night. I called another vet first thing the next morning and they told me to bring her in immediately. Unfortunately she had a huge mass in her chest pushing against her lung. We decided to try a few medicines to see if it gave her any relief. Fast forward 4 days when I get home from work she’s coughing up foam and can’t stop coughing and shaking. I knew it was time because I absolutely couldn’t watch her suffer (she’s 17 btw). I again called shively and told them I was bringing her in to be put down she was suffering. They told me the on call vet unfortunately can’t come in and do it and again wait till the morning. They also told me to put her in a dark contained room till morning. Seriously? Let her suffer in the dark in a contained room. That wasn’t happening. This was at 7pm. How is this a 24 animal hospital and the on call vet can’t come in? Someone make this make sense to me? If putting your baby down isn’t a emergency what is? Dr. Mary Jane has euthanized my last two babies. The last one in March. She was there and refused to see Layla. I can assure you me or any of my family will never bring any of our babies to Shively ever again. I am so upset they made my baby suffer not once but twice. Shame on you.

Negative experience: I took my cat there yesterday to get an arthritis shot and 10 minutes later he was dead! He had no adverse reaction to it the last time he got one so what happened this time? And to beat all, they charged me almost $200 to kill him and I don't mean by putting him to sleep.

Negative experience: Got a new puppy. She had alternating diarrhea & semi formed poop. Not due for 2nd set of shots, per Shively. Called Shively, made aware not been seen before, would be a new patient and was told to bring in a sample ONLY. Did so, disabled vet w/2 orthotic shoes stood in line for over an hour and a half. Girl at desk states the puppy needed to seen before the poop could be tested. Made aware that was not what was told on the phone. She states what was told on the phone was not reliable information. Then told that first visit would be $50 new pt fee + $50 office visit +$10 poop testing fee + about $25-60 for medication. $170 total for a disabled veteran on a fixed income was to much. Girl could use an attitude adjustment. Will NOT be using this "cheap vet" clinic. Disgusting treatment for a disabled veteran.

Fantastic experience: We are beyond grateful we found SACH! We adopted from the shelter and within a week our puppy was infected from the negligent neutering and had cellulitis! The doctors and associate at SACH were able to help us same day for 10% of the cost of what other locations were quoting! We will forever be grateful for you saving Jack! We are never going anywhere else in Louisville again!

Negative experience: I brought my pet 12 yr old Pomeranian Bunny to see doctor Scott. He unfortunately passed away in his care. It’s not so much that u lost my pet, because when we brought him in he wasn’t breathing properly from an enlarged heart and fluid in his lungs. He unfortunately developed a cough a couple weeks ago and stop eating about 3 days before his death. What was collus and inconsiderate was him and his staff brushing off our concerns and calling out pet BENNY. During his stay Dr Scott never offered me any suggestions after me and my finance constantly asked him what we should do for him in his current health state. They left him in a room to die lonely and kept giving him shots.. i feel so horrible for not knowing what it would look like. I never meant for my friend to experience such a horrible death. He shouldn’t have died the way he did had we known that was what was his treatment gonna look like I would have had him put down to ease his pain. Even after when I paid for the cremation I was questioned as to if I owed money which I had receipts for berthing I paid and all of his paperwork constantly calling him Bunny. The staff was inconsistent some cared and the ones tasked with the job could care less. Please DONT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE the last two photos are what remains of him and they wrote the name the bag wrong so they took off the name and gave me a bag with just my info on it.

Fantastic experience: Our cat was very sick and we weren't sure if she was going to make it through the weekend. Our regular vet was closed for the weekend and we were looking for a good place to take her that was affordable. Someone referred us to Shively Animal Clinic and they took our cat for an overnight visit. They were wonderful at explaining the situation and the care plan to follow at home. Our cat has had an amazing turn-around and is doing great. The clinic called us a few days after returning home just to check on her and answer any questions we had. They were so caring and knowledgeable. I will be taking all of our pets there from now on.

Negative experience: I'll never take any of my animals there. My cousin took her cat there after being hot by a cat. They charged her 200 n told her he was dehydrated. They wouldn't take her pet insurance card. And wouldn't take an exray even though she had cash. They should be shut down

Negative experience: Earlier this summer, Ra (my cat) was diagnosed with diabetes. He fell ill one night after a few weeks of receiving his diagnoses. He wasn’t moving much, refusing to eat and could barely drink water. Huge difference from his normal attitude and behavior. So I called Shively animal clinic during this emergency, hopefully get some help. A lady picked up and advised that they would have to call back after I explained what was going on. I in the mean time went to the store to get a few items and to get some honey. He was having all the symptoms for low blood sugar. When they finally opened there was a long line of ppl, but I was confident that they would help me during this emergency, so I explained to someone at the front desk. They kept asking if he was seen there before. He had been seen there before, but in between that time, I had taken him to another clinic for his shots one year. Which they must’ve noticed the big gap. They then asked where he was diagnosed, gave them the name of the clinic and that’s when they refused service. Told me to wait until they were open. I drove all the way to the other clinic, which was closed. Shively animal clinic gave me a call to so call, “check on Ra”, even apologizing to me…which is wild . They could’ve helped. I had all of his info with me. I ended up going to another clinic that did take Ra. The way this place does business if questionable. They do not care at all. I was in tears when I went to them for help. Shively told me it would be an upfront charge and I said yes I will pay, then they said I didn’t call, I showed them the call on my phone from that night, then they said they had no records of Ra, the lady eventually found them. They told me I’d have to wait in the back of the line and then eventually told me to go to the other clinic. Why waste all that time, coming up with all those excuses. Deplorable and unnecessarily rude, unprofessional, behavior with no emotions. You’d be better taking your pets elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: For over 40 years my family and I have taken all of our pets to Shively Animal clinic. I have never seen such an extraordinary, caring team of staff as the ones that are there. Especially Dr. Mary Jane and Dr. Joyce. Recently I had to make the hardest decision for my 16 year old Manchester. He was one of the toughest dogs I had ever had, and with everything he endured he would not have made it to 16 without the help of such wonderful doctors. They understand and get that our pets , are our family. That it isn't just a dog. Dr. Mary Jane was with my son and I the day I had to let Humphrey go. While it was a sad day, it was the right thing to do. I am forever grateful to everyone that had a little or big part in helping Humphrey and my family. I could not think of any other place we could have gone. Thank you to all.

Fantastic experience: Our baby Ragamuffin had an eye infection on thanksgivings day. We called and they were open! Good staff, excellent care.

Negative experience: Apparently you have to have been there within two years to be helped in an emergency even when they say you need to be seen. Zero compassion and completely unwilling to help. Ive brought him there countless times before, even after hours for another emergency, but since they are available all night I called because I needed help now so my dog won’t lose his eye. I’ve always recommended so many people to this place but I’m never going back since it is clearly not about helping in an emergency and more about following to rules of their paperwork. DO NOT COUNT ON THEM TO BE THERE WHEN YOU NEED IT.

Fantastic experience: This is the best animal clinic around. I appreciate all of the staff so much. Recently Dr Sam helped with my senior cat. He listened to me. He took time with my cat, who is over 14. This is a difficult experience but I'm grateful for the compassion the whole staff show. Thank you.
