While baby teeth were once removed quickly during spay/neuter procedures, current veterinary standards now recommend dental X-rays at the time of extraction to ensure no roots or fragments are left behind. This is critical for long-term comfort and oral health and is done to protect our patients — not to create additional procedures.

On rare occasions, baby teeth cannot be removed the same day due to factors such as:
• a patient not tolerating anesthesia safely
• our regular full dental cases are more complex and require extended time and imaging
• limitations on safely adding additional X-rays during another patient’s procedure

When this occurs, proceeding on a separate day allows us to provide the safest and most thorough care possible.

At check-in, our team should confirm how you’d like to proceed if baby teeth cannot be completed that day — either moving forward with the spay/neuter or rescheduling. Without patient details, we can’t confirm what was discussed during your visit.

We are truly heartbroken to hear about Muffin’s passing and understand how devastating this must be for you. Muffin was seen for a recheck after his surgery, during which he received an exam and X-rays. Our doctor discussed the results showed he required more care than we could provide and the recommendation for him to be seen for advanced care at an emergency clinic.
We have also reached out to you and the emergency veterinary team to better understand what happened. Please know that Muffin did not contract any blood-borne illness at our clinic — all patients are kept in separate kennels and travel in their own carriers to ensure their safety.

We’re very sorry for the frustration this caused. When your cat’s appointment was booked, we requested her full medical records so our doctor could safely plan her procedure. After several requests, we received the complete records just a few days before the scheduled surgery. Once our doctor reviewed them, it was determined that your cat’s health condition made her a higher-risk patient and not a candidate for surgery at our clinic.

We know it’s disappointing to have a procedure canceled after waiting so long, but your cat’s safety will always come first. We hope she’s able to get the care she needs in a setting equipped for her specific risks.

As for the cone, we do recommend it to help prevent pets from disturbing their incision site, but we understand that every pet is different. While the cone itself doesn’t cause illness, we respect your decision not to use it and encourage an open dialogue so we can support you with alternatives.

Regarding pain management, we follow standard veterinary practices and provide medication based on each pet's needs.
