UW Veterinary Care: Opiniones
Experiencia fantástica: Dr. Kelly and Liz were exceptional in guiding us through a very difficult diagnosis for our dog. They showed genuine compassion, clearly explained our dog’s condition, and demonstrated a sincere commitment to our pet’s health and well-being. We were very happy with the care and services we received through UW Vet Care.
Experiencia fantástica: Can't say enough good about the vet school. Very caring care, and not nearly as pricey as I thought it would be
Experiencia fantástica: Dr. Durante and Dr. Mitchell have went above and beyond to help save my Netherland dwarf rabbit's life. I am eternally grateful to the team here. They not only have extensive expertise in exotic pets but unyielding compassion. They care about your baby and do their utmost best to help. Please continue to provide excellent care to all animals. I've never met such caring people in my entire life.
Experiencia fantástica: Thank you for taking such great care of Cedar Chip!
Experiencia fantástica: Very beautiful state of the art facility. Student teaching hospital. Special species (ferret) emergency visit, med student was amazing and professional. A special species team was called in for our visit at 9 pm. She made sure we understood all the steps that were being taken for the care of our animal. Great customer service.
Experiencia fantástica: The veterinarians that work at the veterinary care facility are excellent. This is a university training facility as well. The staff working are excellent veterinary professors to undergraduate students that are learning to be vets in a couple years. I took my Labrador here for a surgical procedure that was very complex. My "dog daughter" came through fine and is currently recovering fine.
Experiencia fantástica: , , . I’m editing because people are telling their negative stories and I want to tell you how they saved this cat over months. I went to Blue Pearl Animal in Appleton after my cat had dropped dramatic weight after a long trip… a referral after testing in Point. They did a section to remove an intestinal blockage. They let him go home within 8 hours and filthy. They claimed he ate but he never did for me. Within days, he was bloated and dying. Blue Pearl refused to see me on follow up, I called a vet friend, and I rushed him to the UW. I got to Madison at 10 pm and they were full. I saw Doctor Fink who realize my cat was dying and they moved things around to admit him and IV feed him. He was in septic shock. They operated to clear the infection but his condition was so dire he had to stay 8 days. After his release, infection was still present and I had to return every other day to remove stitches, clean the infection and restitch for almost 50 days. During this time, I saw many surgeons. Dr Jess Walters and Dr. Fink were amongst many. I was never once charged for the visit, the surgeon’s time or anything except materials needed. I don’t suspect this is always the case, but I was devoted and was willing to slide into any opening. My 24 pound cat had dropped to 12 pounds post Blue Pearl surgery. Every day was a gain at UW. They were so incredibly kind and knowledgeable. I have many pets and know many veterinarians. The caring is unmatched. They are busy but if you want the best care, DO NOT go anywhere else. Over a year later, my sweet cat is both healthy and back to 24 pounds. THANK YOU!
Experiencia fantástica: We have been bringing our girl to the oncology department. Everyone has been so kind and considerate. The level of care is incredible.
Experiencia fantástica: Very good services. Thanks so much ...
Experiencia fantástica: The students and staff went above and beyond with the level of care provided to our Alex and to us with his diagnosis and eol treatment. I can't thank you enough for allowing us the extra time to be with him, he was an awesome cat and made for the best cuddle buddy!
Experiencia fantástica: My dog needed a difficult surgery and they were the only care hospital that had surgeons skilled for it. Everything went smoothly - wonderful communication with every step.
Experiencia fantástica: Saved my dog Larry’s life from blue green algae toxins in 2019. My vet then was amazing and the one I’ve had in recent years is as caring and helpful as anyone could be. Truly a wonderful place.
Experiencia fantástica: People are friendly, check-in was fast. The staff are very caring about their animals whom they care for. It was apparent today when we dropped off Milo, whom is having surgery.
Experiencia fantástica: Good place to go for services that cannot be provided anywhere else.
Experiencia fantástica: Our boy was very well cared for prompt help and very curious. Would go again if we have to
Experiencia fantástica: Took our beagle to emergency around 2:00 A.M. They admitted her right away. The wait time was quite long, but worth the emergency care.
Experiencia fantástica: They helped so much. I’m so happy my ferret Hermes got to go back home to his sister! Best vet I ever been to they really love and care about your animals.
Experiencia fantástica: The staff provided so many updates and gave our sweet boy the most incredible love and care. He has been in a super scary situation and had to stay overnight twice, but his care team went above and beyond to answer our endless questions and reached out to us with frequent updates. They were thorough, efficient, and made sure to hang out with our boy and let him walk around (our cat is used to attention 24/7 so we were worried about him being lonely). Special shout out to Rebecca for giving him the extra love.
Experiencia fantástica: The staff - from calling ahead & getting advice, to the vets, to the techs who helped us check in & out - are wonderful. They make what could be a stressful emergency situation into something manageable and caring. Thank you!
Experiencia negativa: A woman that answers the phone at orthopedics is RUDE as ever! Took my 120 pound cane corso to the UW emergency vet yesterday to be told she tore her ACL and needs surgery. Told to call ortho to schedule. Called the ortho department this morning and needless to say will not be coming here. What a shame that the first customer experience with this department is with someone so rude! She stated my dog needs to see an ortho doctor first, can’t have surgery prior. Fine, no problem. However the first available appointment to even see a doctor is 3 months out! I get being busy but my 120 pound dog cannot even get up off the floor or stand and she said “this is not a high priority or emergency service like a bone sticking out” wow! No it’s just a huge dog that can’t hold herself up to even stand to eat or get outside and is whining in pain! She then stated “customers that have been here before take priority over those that haven’t” what a joke! I was there yesterday and spent $1100! I know the doctors at UW are pretty good but I will not be having surgery here having to deal with someone so UNCOMPASSIONATE for an injured animal. Management should definitely speak to this woman and she should get a job that doesn’t require you to care about a live animals well being!
Experiencia fantástica: We have taken several dogs here for major surgeries, including a pacemaker. They are phenomenal. They are very caring and always care ao much for our animals.
Experiencia fantástica: These guys saved my pup's life earlier this year. He developed blastomycosis and our local vets unfortunately had almost no idea what to do. By the time we figured out to come here he was at death's door. They genuinely care about you and your pets. And their pricing is less than you'd expect as well. We're not local, it's an hour and a half drive to come in. For us it has 100% been worth it. Edit: a year later, we had to return with our dog having relapsed due to our inept local vet. I wish I didn't have to go into Madison for this level of care, but this place is amazing still. They all remembered our doggo, I can't believe how amazing everything is here.
Experiencia negativa: Quoted me a lower price than what they ended up giving me. Do not go here for emergencies because they couldn't even help my cat anyways. A 300 something bill I was told ended up 800 something.
Hi Devin - Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we’re sorry to hear about your experience. We understand how frustrating unexpected costs can be. While estimates can change based on a pet’s condition and the diagnostics or treatments needed during the visit, you should always feel informed about any updates. We’d appreciate the opportunity to review what happened and clarify the charges with you. Please feel free to contact our administrative team at [email protected] so we can help.
Experiencia negativa: Short review: Beyond frustrated and disrespected. No urgency and no care for the people bringing their pets in. Made me second guess if I was in the emergency clinic, even though it was written in giant words on the wall. Long review: Took my dog there at 4pm today after he pooped blood and vomited twice in the last 24 hours. Upon arrival, I was taken to a back room where a nurse did vitals. She couldn’t get my dog to stay still for the thermometer so she gave up and said “the armpit is fine”, took a quick temp and wrote that down. Asked me what was going on and I listed the issue, emphasizing that it had all been today and that there was a decent amount of blood. She told me to go wait in the lobby and left the room, leaving me to find my way back to the lobby. I then proceeded to wait 4 hours in the lobby with my boyfriend. Not a soul spoke to us the whole time. During this time we saw one patient come out from the back room, and an handful of nurses came in and out to chat with the front desk. Everyone other patient in the lobby remained stagnant with us. At one point, a nurse was looking for a man. She asked the front desk worker to find him when she couldn’t. He called the man, and finally the patient came out, saying he had been left in a room and didn’t know he was supposed to come to the lobby. The man at the counter then proceeded to talk so unbelievably disrespectfully to him, saying how the nurse was looking for him and yelling his name. The poor kid apologized and then sat down while he waited for his cat. Two people checked out while I waited, both of which were charged $6k+ for whatever their animals had needed. The amount was required to be paid on the spot with no prior estimate. Finally, I called VCA after doing research on other ERs in the area. They were shocked to hear I had been waiting 4 hours, and said it was crazy, which I couldn’t agree with more. I ended up going there, and they were incredible. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO UW, GO TO VCA ON E BROADWAY. I told the front desk I was leaving because I had been waiting for 4 hours and was worried about my dog and really needed him to be seen. I felt awful. While I did this, my dog slipped his harness and tried for the door because of how excited he was to leave. No one on the staff moved to help at all. I got my dog back in the harness and reiterated that I was sorry but I was leaving because another place had a shorter wait. The man at the counter shrugged and just said “okay, sorry for the wait” and then resumed his conversation with his coworker. Absolutely vile place. The nurses said my dog was cute, but there was no actual care or concern for if my dog was okay. The patients were the only good thing there.
Experiencia fantástica: I have brought my ferrets here multiple times, both for emergency care and for more routine procedures. My ferrets have had blood work and diagnostic testing done here and been treated for acute infections and maintenance of adrenal disease, insulinoma, and lymphoma over the years. The exotics/small pets staff have been great every time. They are very thorough in their testing and in communicating information about my pets' health to me. I have had to euthanize two of my older pets, and they gave great care and support following their diagnosises and were very compassionate and considerate when the time came. I feel like when I bring my pets here, they are in great hands.
Experiencia fantástica: Several months back I had to bring in my cat, Sapphire. I’m writing this post late, but I feel the need to express my gratitude to this hospital, the kind staff and students. I have had a rough year with losing my daughter and was scared that I was going to lose my cat. Your warm hearts have had a lasting effect on me. I cannot thank you all enough for what you did for Sapphire and I. He is doing great! I wish you all the very best! Thanks again!❤️
Experiencia fantástica: If you're pet is experiencing neurological symptoms, this is the place to go. 10/10.
Experiencia fantástica: They looked after my dog who had new onset seizures and some really worrying post seizure aggression. He had to be in for 2 nights but they were very caring and very thorough.
Experiencia fantástica: Dr. Mowat and Dr. Ludwig, along with their student Hannah, were absolutely amazing. The doctors were very comprehensive and told me their entire thought process, and were so kind to me and, most importantly, my cat. I wish I could give them 6/5 stars. UW ophthalmology is the place to go!!
Experiencia fantástica: Such amazing experience so far. Our puppy is in their care right now. We are waiting to hear how the test results have come out and what the next step is for surgery tomorrow. We feel very confident she is going to come through this in a positive way.
Experiencia fantástica: I took my bird here last week and they were absolutely amazing. It was awesome to find a vet that takes birds that wasn’t too far from me. I called with an emergency and they got back to me immediately. As soon as I walked in, they took us back. They were kind, patient, honest, and informative. I ended up having to put my bird down and they treated me with the upmost respect. They gave me as much time as I needed with her before and after her passing. I didn’t feel rushed or pushed into putting her down. I felt like they were really there for me and tried cheering me up the best that they could. They made a difficult time a lot easier for me. If I had another emergency with one of my other pets, I would definitely go there! Thank you guys again for all the kind words! RIP Matcha!
Experiencia fantástica: The vet was compassionate and attentive. She answered all my questions. I never felt rushed. I was so distressed after my dog's recent cancer diagnosis.
Experiencia fantástica: Called around baby emergency vet clinics in the Madison area. Most places I would have been in the thousands of dollars for emergency care. But UW is the best and most reasonable. Vet visits are never cheap. But for the care and same X-rays they're worth the money that they charge.
Experiencia fantástica: The vets here are amazing, we went years ago for an eye exam and last week for a traumatic injury to our horse. Everyone was caring, compassionate and expained everything in detail. We trust them and are very happy with the care our horses have received!
Experiencia negativa: Thanks for letting our dog sit in your facilities for 5 hrs. Than, when you move him for simple work. He crashed and died. Nice work. Hope you feel good.
Experiencia fantástica: The "best of the best"! Brilliant Doctors and staff. They are miracle workers!
Experiencia fantástica: We were impressed with the level of care and compassion my Lionhead bunny received when he came in for both the consultation appointment and scheduled surgery to have his top incisors extracted. All our questions were thoroughly answered, which mitigated my anxiety about the procedure. I’m happy to report that my bunny is back to eating hay less than a week following his big dental surgery. :-) Big thank you to UW Veterinary Care for improving my precious bunny’s quality of life!
Experiencia fantástica: Cleft palette repair surgery on a 5 lb cat isn't easy but they got the job done. Thanks Dr Kate, Zoe and everyone else that got our little Amelia Bedelia fixed up!!
Experiencia negativa: TLDR: If you are considering emergency care for a cat with normal vitals and is not visibly dying, I highly recommend you go elsewhere. I heard VCA and VEG (pricier) provide more humane treatment/better communication. I went to the emergency room at 6pm on a Saturday evening. When I called them earlier, they recommended bringing my 10y/o cat (had a recent surgery and didn't eat/drink for almost 2 days) in and mentioned there is a ~2h wait time. I was ok with the wait *assuming* that she'll wait by my side since she gets extremely nervous with vet visits and refused to take gabapentin beforehand. However, they took her behind closed doors and let her sit in her carrier for FIVE hours. She was in pain, sick, weak and shaking when they took her. I was so worried and asked for updates repeatedly. Receptionist always said someone will update me soon. How many updates did I get? ZERO, in the 5 hours I was there. I didn't know if someone was monitoring or checking in on her. I didn't even know if she was alive. Five hours later, the student/technician finally came out and said they wouldn't be able to see her for a few more hours. I was furious inside - nobody communicated this to me earlier - If someone told me at hour 2 that they can't see her right away, I would've take her home or to another ER immediately. She was apologetic but I'd rather her be rude and have my cat be treated. It truly broke my heart to know my baby was curled up in the carrier in fear and in pain, for five hours. They *knowingly* put my suffering cat in a situation where she could only get worse. I understand this is an ER and saw some serious cases coming in. However, communication was nonexistent and misleading at times (the animal waits *by itself* for hours, with no access to potty/monitoring). This is inhumane treatment in my eyes. This is my first time writing a review, only because I don't want any other beloved pets and their humans to go through what I went through. My cat had acute pancreatitis and is recovering well thankfully. Get well soon to all the cuties out there.
Experiencia fantástica: Great staff. We got in quickly and everything went well for the dog as well.
Experiencia negativa: Waited four hours and never got seen. While this is an emergency clinic, and higher priorities come in, communication needs to be much better.
Experiencia fantástica: They are a teaching veterinary hospital which provides cutting edge technology. I would recommend this facility 100%. The fees are very reasonable as well.
Experiencia negativa: One of the two worst vet hospitals I have brought my dog to. First- they chipped my dog's tooth during intubation for a CT scan, and failed to mention it to me! I had to discover it myself while visiting my dog in the ER. Second, my dog stayed at 3 hospitals over the course of his sudden sickness. This is the ONLY hospital that reported my dog had been extremely anxious and wouldn't lay down/relax at the kennel. The other two hospitals stated he was calm the whole time. And sure enough, since going to this hospital, he gets very anxious about going to ANY vet. He was not like this before. Third- Dr. Roche. An awful vet. She clearly disliked that I ask a lot of questions and would advocate for my dog regarding certain treatments. Every time she spoke over the phone, she spoke to me in a very rude and belittling manner- and I just took it, because I didn't want to give her or any staff reason to mistreat my poor dog- though that happened regardless! She also lied to me when I asked if she would speak to Trupanion regarding an appeal- she told me one thing and Trupanion another, which resulted in Trupanion refusing to cover part of his medical bills. It's also clear they didn't take my poor baby potty and let him just get sick in the kennel. Upon picking him up, his anus region and tail was totally shaved. When I asked why, they claimed it was because he urinated on himself during a CT- yet they didn't shave his crotch area. Just the anus. As my dog and I left, I also saw a man with a husky that had collapsed, yet was JUST discharged! I asked why they discharged his husky when it's clear he is unwell- he said he didn't understand either. That they think his dog ate something toxic, did some IV fluids and sent him home, telling him there was nothing more they could do. My poor dog was treated awful, so much so that he now has a lot of anxiety at vets. I was treated in a very disrespectful manner by Dr. Roche. They chipped my dog's tooth (and didn't even offer to fix it! Or even tell me about it!) Lied to insurance. I do not trust this place, and will never bring my dog here again. I recommend Madison Veterinary Specialists instead. Response to Hospital: No, no one has reached out to address any of the issues. No one addressed a resolution for chipping my dog's tooth, or that Dr. Roche lied to insurance. The ONLY person I have spoken to was Dr. Roche, as detailed above. So the claim you guys have "addressed" these issues is a lie.
We appreciate you sharing your concerns and have discussed them with you previously. We wish you and your pet all the best.
Experiencia negativa: I hate to do this .. but when you are told to call the UW to work with a specific department AFTER talking with other vet clinics and they tell you no basically and you need to send papers over and get established before they'll work with you and YOU HAVE A SEVERE CASE... ITS FRUSTRATING AND EXTREMELY SAD! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THE UW AT ALL!!! HAVE SOME COMPASSION!!!
Experiencia fantástica: Dr. Garcia and Shamana we’re absolutely phenomenal. They took the time to explain the diagnosis of prognosis and their opinion on the correct procedure the day of the procedure. They were understanding given my apprehension and emotional state. I couldn’t appreciate Dr. Garcia and Shamana more.
Experiencia fantástica: An amazing staff and building. Every medical professional was so helpful and knowledgeable. I have a bearded dragon and it can be difficult to decipher good information online. So talking with real reptile medical experts was so appreciative.
Experiencia fantástica: Always excellent care for my soul dog Eddie!
Experiencia negativa: My cat is screaming in my arms. I am in tears. "Date of birth?" "What's your address,?" "What's your name?""favorite color?" "What shows do you like?" SHUT UP AND HELP MY CAT
We’re sorry to hear about your experience. We understand it can be stressful to share important information when you’re concerned about your pet’s health. If you’d like to talk further, we welcome you to reach out to us directly, 608-263-7600, or [email protected]. Thank you.
Experiencia fantástica: Excellent care from everyone. I could really feel the true love for my cat as she went through her procedures.
Experiencia fantástica: The quality of care and service from people like Leah in Oncology and Leslie in the ER is amazing. They're great about adapting the schedules in real time. A phone call in time kept me from driving 2 hours. Kudos to their very caring very human approach.
Experiencia fantástica: Excellent and thorough. They are totally on top of and up to date on veterinary care. I go there to get resolutions for our dogs health issues. I trust them. They also take the time to explain and answer questions.
Experiencia fantástica: I cannot begin to thank them for their passion and care for animals. 2 years ago they saved my German shepherd and made things easy for me through the whole process. I just recently took my cat Skyler in after a spay procedure didn't go well and they did EVERYTHING in their power to give her the best chance at survival. They even sent me with extra IV fluids on them & checked in with the clinic that was going to preform her surgery. Unfortunately she didn't make it but they kept in touch and made me feel better about everything. They have gone above and beyond in multiple ways and I cannot thank them enough. 10000% recommend bringing your animals here for the best care!
Experiencia fantástica: Dr. Duke was phenomenal. I don’t remember the students name, but she was also wonderful. Very thorough, empathetic, and kind. I recently had another visit to the ER, and my pet had to be put down. I don't remember the vet's name, but the staff was incredible and very gentle towards the situation.
Experiencia fantástica: Prompt action on my puppy who was admitted after blood marrow failure due to a medication. Dr. Bergen helped me feel reassured and eased me after a bleak prognosis from my primary vet. I left knowing my dog would be well taken care of. Dr. Kilpatrick made me feel prepared to take her home (and even got Daisy home early).
Experiencia fantástica: Fantastic people. Edit 5-2025: still fantastic. We take our animals here for primary care, but also needed to use the tier ER. Had to take one of our cats in on Christmas Day! Staff, nurses, vets were all kind and supportive people. I'll also say that Jim from Primary Care scheduling/support team is phenomenal. He remembers my partner and I whenever we reach out and goes above and beyond. I swear Jim has gotten our sick cats seen quickly when no one thought they could - I'm pretty sure our cat made it because of it.
Experiencia negativa: UW Madison Veterinary is over priced for mediocre care. Emergency vet is overpriced, to the point you can barely save your pet if you’re lucky. The only thing they can provide is tools necessary. But they lack the knowledge. They should bring their prices down. Since any experiences they do have with animals, is learned on job. And helps students learn. My advice is go somewhere else where they won’t price gouge you. You can get the same care down the street at any vet, for a better price. And a lot less stubbornness.
Experiencia fantástica: My experience with the UW veterinarian hospital in Madison was amazing The employees are great of the nurses and the doctors are amazing I've been there twice now with my cat they took very good care of her she had to stay there for a while they called me all the time they kept in touch with me pricing was good they are just an amazing and organization that they have built for their community in the Wisconsin area around us they are I cannot say how grateful It's a drive for me but it is definitely worth it they are an amazing group of people at the UW hospital veterinarian they're just I can't express enough how grateful I am for all of them
Experiencia positiva: I have been here about a handful of times over the last 5 years. Typically I use their emergency department. They have always been very helpful and kind to my pets. I really appreciate what they do here.
Experiencia negativa: The people at the er are weird and rude and have zero sense or urgency. The tech asked me to go to the front desk to see if my vet sent over my dogs medical records (something the tech should've done). I proceeded to go to the front desk and they indicated that they did already have his records. I went back to the room with no tech in sight, I waited about 15 minutes to see if the tech was coming back and she didn't. I went to the front desk to see what was going on and I got a snippy response from the lady at the reception desk. She wouldn't even turn around to talk to me, my hearing already isn't the greatest and she was talking the opposite direction. I waited another 45 min and asked reception again what is going on, her response was "they're coming up with a plan, hold tight". Now an hour and 30 min has passed since anyone told me what was going on and they assured me the vet would be out shortly. The vet finally came out about 2 1/2 hours later from when i first got there and did a 15 min exam and said they could get me my dogs meds to save a trip from running to my local vet and said they'd be right out with them. About an hour later no sign of anyone I asked reception if anyone was coming with my dogs meds and again got a pissy response from the lady at the back computer, again wouldn't even turn around so I could hear her decent. I spent a total of 4 hours at this place for what my local vet did in 20 min.
Experiencia fantástica: Dr. Miranda and Ashley took great care of Avie. Ashley will have an excellent career wherever it takes her! Avie had a mast cell tumor just behind her shoulder removed. Also some growths around her eye. She is resting comfortably at home and probably dreaming of all her new friends.
Experiencia fantástica: UW Emergency Veterinary is a lifesaver! Literally! After my cat ingested day lily they did their part making sure Olive was not at risk for kidney failure. Including calling me with all/any updates which was greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking care of my baby so I could bring her home!
Experiencia negativa: A bit of a bait and switch. My cat broke his leg over the weekend and was in need of a femoral head ostectomy to relieve pain and allow the leg to heal properly. The experience with UW Veterinary Care felt like a significant disregard for my cat, Walter's, well-being. After agreeing to a Tuesday appointment for a Wednesday femoral head ostectomy to relieve his pain, I stopped pursuing other surgical options, believing his care was secured. I was informed late on Monday that Walter's surgery was likely to be postponed in favor of another patient, a dog with a broken leg, and rescheduled for Friday. At this point, Walter was in extreme pain, barely using the litter box, relying on a fentanyl patch from an emergency vet visit, and unable to move more than a few feet. To postpone his surgery for another patient after a commitment had been made felt like a devaluation of his suffering. Their proposed solution – to hospitalize him for an additional two days, confined to a crate while he waited – struck me as a lack of empathy for his distress. While I was ultimately able to find alternative care at VCA East for a Tuesday surgery, this required significant effort and caused unnecessary stress as I had to resolve an issue I believed was already settled. This experience with UW Veterinary Care was deeply disappointing and left me feeling that Walter's urgent need for pain relief was not prioritized.
We are so very sorry to hear about your experience at UWVC. We are here to help patients and our community, and we can assure you, the decision to postpone procedures is not taken lightly. We also understand your perspective as a pet owner. We would be happy to discuss the specific circumstances further with you, if you'd like. Please feel free to email us at: [email protected].
Experiencia fantástica: I could not recommend UW Veterinary Care enough. I did a lot of research before deciding where to take my 3-year old, rescue Cocker Spaniel pup to seek help for his recent onset of seizures. Dr. Antes and her assistant Dani were incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and helpful throughout our visit. They called me throughout the process to receive confirmation and approval on how I would like to proceed with additional tests, etc. and were very transparent about the costing estimates for each procedure. George is a timid pup who can sometimes be shy to warm up to strangers, and when I dropped him off on Day 2 for his MRI, he ran in tail wagging and never looked back! I know he was handled with the utmost care and I could not be more grateful for our experience. Everyone we met from the check-in staff, receptionists, etc. was truly impressive and the facility was immaculate. If you are wondering where to take your pup, UW is absolutely the place. We drove up from Chicago for this appointment and would do it 1000x over again to receive this level of care.
Experiencia fantástica: UW is consistently in the top 10 nationally for care (sometimes top 5!) and it's obvious when you arrive. Everything you need is on campus, so no need for extra travel or appointments.
Experiencia fantástica: Our 6-year old Lab has a cancerous tumor that needs surgery. UWVC was recommended by a number of friends. Amazing setup. On-time. Drs and students were very bright and experienced. Surgery next week but very pleased so far.
Experiencia fantástica: We brought our alpaca, CarrieAnn here because she refused to stand. After running some tests and providing aggressive treatment overnight, the decision was made to humanely euthanize her. I cannot thank Dr. Dylan Thomas enough for his support throughout the entire process. He is intelligent, compassionate, thoroughly explains everything, and provides all the time you need for questions and options. He is truly phenomenal. We will be bringing our other large animals here when needed without hesitation. He made a very difficult time more comfortable for us. He is the epitome of gold standard veterinary care.
Experiencia fantástica: They are so very gifted at what they do! They are also inherently kind. The clinic is and hour and a half from my home and worth every minute of the drive. Th
Experiencia negativa: The amount of rudeness I have gotten from the receptionist every time I call is absolutely appalling! I have been working as a Hospital Manager at a Veterinarian's office for 23 years and can not believe that this is even allowed at a place of business! Especially toward the referring veterinarian. I will make sure to never refer there ever again! Update: I called back after hours and talked to a delightful receptionist that was very helpful :) Her name is Deneen. If I ever have to call back, I will remember to call back after hours from now on.
Experiencia fantástica: Very nice and professional made sure I understood what was wrong with my kitty and what my options were was happy to hear Nibbler is eligible for a treatment for his hyperthyroid update on nibbler in 2025 radiation treatment for thyroid that UW veterinary Care performed on him worked great have him in my lap this minute he's 15 or 16 now totally happy that UW veterinary Care gave me years more with him I love this little guy
Experiencia fantástica: I am very impressed by both the ER dept and Neurology dept. Although I wish the outcome of my 9yr chocolate lab was better, they were kind, thorough, and compassionate. They listened and answered all our questions. They explained in detail all options and risks. They were bot pushy. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
Experiencia fantástica: We had a medical emergency with our dog and took her to UW Emergency Dept on campus. She was cared for my Dr. Jordan Genovese, DVM, MPH. We had the best experience we could possibly have had. Our dog was 12 years old, but healthy as far as we knew. She became acutely ill and was diagnosed with a critical illness. Our dog (and my husband and I) were handled with incredible competence, respect, compassion, gentleness, and clarity. We were kept informed at all times and enough time was given to answer all of our questions. We were able to take her home along with meds to keep her comfortable. We called with questions a couple of days later and were given immediate answers and the support that we needed. We will always be grateful for Dr. Genovese and her staff at such a difficult time in our life.
Experiencia fantástica: This is an amazing facility w/excellent staff! The care team my cockatoo thankfully had saved her live without skipping a beat! I can’t imagine ever going anywhere else with my sweet baby B! No words can describe how much I appreciate each and every one of you!
Experiencia fantástica: Dr. Levy from special species is an exceptionally compassionate, intelligent, patient, and authentic provider. Throughout this entire journey, Dr. Levy put thoughtful care into considering all care options, collaborating with various specialists, and checking in to see how my bunny and I were doing. My bunny had a severe tooth root abscess that had progressed to being retrobulbar (behind the eye), and he would have died without treatment at UW. I owe my bunny’s life to Dr. Levy and her team, and I will never forget her kindness. Any animal that is in her care is oh so lucky.
Experiencia fantástica: Excellent care, knowledgeable, thorough, friendly, they provide intervention and prices are reasonable. Follow up is good too. I travel the two hours to take my dog here because I know I will get the help I need and the prices are more reasonable than my local primary veterinarian. I am very happy with the care my aging toy poodle has received and when my primary vet did not help me the cardiologist stepped in and provided care and medicine which was not heart related. So grateful!
Experiencia negativa: My boyfriend spent the whole day here with my dog because I was dealing with my with grandfather passing away all at the same time. My dog needed to get taken care of. His eye was just literally hanging out. They accessed him for hours I mean hours and advised us they couldn’t do surgery till Monday. Which was ok. During this time they didn’t treat him. Informed us of the options over the phone and a rough estimate of the cost. We kept saying price doesn’t matter several times that we just wanted the removal surgery done. They kept beating around the bush like they didn’t want to do the eye removal. They eventually came out with his head wrapped up horribly, meds and lubricant for me to rub on his eye every hour. Yes every hour putting lube on an eye just hanging there. Charged us a ton and sent us away saying they couldn’t do the emergency surgery till end of week. Said to call my regular vet. We live over an hour away, I couldn’t sit and lubricant his eye every hour. Cost wasn’t an issue. I ended up meeting him and leaving my grandpa’s side, called numerous other er vets. The wrapping was done horrible and eye was out and getting way more swollen. Ended up going to VEG we didn’t get home till 2-3 am. My grandpa ended up passing early Monday morning at 3:33 and I couldn’t be there. VEG was so surprised that the other clinic released him in his condition. We should’ve gone there first. They were so loving, compassionate and understanding. They did an excellent job. They got to him right away and treated him like their own pet.
Danielle - we are sorry to hear about your dog and your experience at UWVC. We have escalated this to our admin team and one of our colleagues will reach out to you soon.
Experiencia positiva: Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Came here from out of town and they were able to sneak my little dog in for a fluoro procedure same day! Only thing i wish would have went better is having an update during the procedure. Was worried when it was 1.5 hours past when they said they would be done and i still heard nothing All in all, good experience and nice to have an expert opinion/exam for my dog!
Experiencia fantástica: I don't think I felt that much care when I took my child to ER! But I felt like my cat isbtrue patient, like a human! She was always addressed by her name. The only thing was - waiting chairs are very uncomfortable for a long wait.
Experiencia negativa: Not nice people. Completely screwed us over because we went to a vet in the past and apparently just going at all qualifies you as being a referral even if it isn't? Not nice on the phone and charging 2.5 times the price because now you've deemed it as a second opinion even though it's a different health issue. Doesn't lead me to think they will care or know anything, so is it worth the drive?? Doubtful. Why make it so difficult to get a pet even seen and why is it bad if we want to switch vets?
We're so sorry to hear that you had a poor experience with UW Veterinary Care. We would be happy to connect with you to learn more about your visit. Please call us at 608-263-7600 or email [email protected] if you wish to share more details of your visit with our hospital administration.
Experiencia fantástica: Don't be afraid to ask questions. From the front desk to the technicians in the back, everyone is professional and wants to help you. The pharmacy staff is also top notch here, ask questions if you have them! We are very fortunate to have this level of veterinary care in Madison, Wisconsin. Be advised that parking might be a little tricky until the remodeling of the old building is completed.
Experiencia negativa: It has been a process to try and get our dog's epilepsy under control. It is very upsetting when your dog continually has break through seizures and the only way to get a hold of the neurologist is through e-mail. I know they are busy and have appointments and rounds in the morning, but when your waiting for information on what to do next about your dog and his medication it's very disheartening to have to wait an entire day to figure out what your next options are. Sometimes speaking to a human does a lot. Even if they say I will get the neurologist the message and they will get back to you as soon as they can.
Experiencia fantástica: I had a bad experience with the ER phone service whatever that may be but overall they have been so so beneficial to my dog. The ER doctors are intelligent. Internal medicine goes the extra mile. (Thank you Heather!!) Very knowledgeable doctors in internal medicine as well. I don't think I've ever had a doctor of my own who had THAT MUCH info right off the top of their head! Thank you all so very much!!
Experiencia fantástica: Update: the new facility is really nice. What a difference! Also, I should have included this in my previous review, but the guy who schedules for dog primary care is the most helpful and kind sounding person. You can tell he cares about where he works and what he does. Thanks! Recently my little old Chihuahua got really sick with pancreatitis and everyone at the clinic was so supportive. They walked us through options for supportive care and never made us feel pressured to go with more expensive options for care. We chose to care for our boy at home and I'm happy to say he recovered fully. The vets and students at the clinic called me every few days to check in and adjust the plan as needed. Shout-out to Dr. Alvarez and student Maddie for your support. This is not the first time I've had a dog with serious illness that got treatment at UW. I had a 15 year old Chihuahua that ultimately died of kidney failure but they supported us through his care in the last few months of his life. Dr Caviness saw us through and she's great to work with. Always compassionate and flexible.
Experiencia positiva: None of the review will include the construction mess. Okay, so the UW Veterinarian was able to achieve something my normal vet was inept at (which they should've been able to do, according to a 3rd party specialist). Yeah for that. But the pick up was horrible. I was given a pick up time and then had to wait an extra 1+ hrs before I got my pet. I had to ask the desk several times what was happening. They didn't know; and that made sense. No fur-doc came out to explain anything. And the worst part (which is the primary reason for the lower rating) was when I tried to call back because the after care was not displaying the expected results. I was hung up on and emails not replied to. I even asked for proper direction on who to contact. They're busy. I get it. They're teaching students. I get it. They need to dedicate time and processes to the full experience, because no one wants a sick furbaby after a vet visit. In the end, I got the follow up assistance from my primary care Veterinarian. My kitty is on meds now to help her healing.
Hello - Thanks for trusting us with care of your pet and glad we were able to help. We apologize for the wait during the discharge and lack of follow up on our side. Hospital admin can follow up if you can let us know what a good phone number is to reach you. You can email us directly at [email protected] with your name, pet's name and phone number. Thank you!
Experiencia fantástica: Over many years, other veterinarians would refer us to UW Veterinary Care for special needs our dogs required that they were unable to provide. We decided years ago to use UW as primary care. They may be more expensive than some other vets, but the care is top notch. And we appreciate that this is a teaching school as well.
Experiencia negativa: We took our rabbit here last night to get euthanized. They sedated our rabbit, said they would take her in the back to administer the shot to put her down. They took her back and we waited. A tech brought her back out to us and put her in her carrier and told us we could take her home. Halfway home, they called and told us we need to come back immediately because THEY NEVER EUTHANIZED HER!! She was just sedated!! We had to drive back and she was AWAKE when we got back to the room. So my kid essentially had to put her pet down twice in one night. I called this morning to talk to someone. I was told someone would call me back and so far, nothing. They did credit us for the visit, which is the least they could do.
Experiencia fantástica: The amount of expertise is incredible. Can't praise the oncology team. They saved our pup when the regular vet painted a very dire picture. Not only do they have all possible treatment options under one roof but there is also no pressure at all (unlike with some specialty clinics) to go a certain route. We felt they were very nterested to find out what was most important for us. How aggressive would we want to treat. Would we lean more on the quality of life side or fight for every day with our boy. There was mo judgemental when we opted against surgery and went a different route. They are so supportive!
Experiencia fantástica: What I like most about UW Vet Clinic is that all the tests and labs are done on site within reasonable time frame, which can make a difference between life and death. Staff is always doing an outstanding job from receptionist at the front desk to tech, to doctor, to janitor. I trust this hospital with my family members because I have to make a choice for them of where to go to and I know that this is a right one.
Experiencia fantástica: A couple weeks ago we seen our local vet for our dachshund who wasn’t using her back legs. They instantly referred us to UW for mri/surgery. I arrived around 7:30pm and was instantly seen. The next morning they were doing a mri and able to preform our dachshunds spinal surgery. They called and kept us up to date every step of the way. Dr. Pinal has been amazing to work with every step of the way. She is so informative, caring and there to help answer and questions we’ve had since her being back home. Highly recommend
Experiencia fantástica: We love the dermotology department! They saved our Cheddar's life. He loves going to see his friends in Madison. They were our last hope. They not only figured out what was wrong but got him on the path to recovery.
Experiencia fantástica: They did a great job. Our GSD had surgery and the outcome was what we were hoping for. The staff is very knowledgeable and caring for animals. We aren't local and the staff response for filling a prescription went well. Highly recommended.
Experiencia fantástica: We are beyond grateful for the care our GSD received at UW Vet. Our boy, Zeus, has suffered chronic GI flare ups which included chronic vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite/lethargy, and weight loss on and off for the past 3 YEARS. We have been to 7 different vets and 1 previous internal specialist (WVRC Waukesha). That previous internist told us he probably had cancer and advised we just put him down, but he was only 1 year old so I refused to take that an as answer. I asked for a broad spectrum antibiotic in case it was an infection they hadn’t tested for yet, and they prescribed amoxicillin, which rid his symptoms immediately. But without it, his aggressive symptoms returned. This could not be a life long treatment plan because it always gave him yeast infections and we knew he’d eventually become tolerant. No one cared to look into it or figure out why he’s so responsive to amoxicillin so we finally settled as a last resort to have a full thickness incision biopsy done. We chose UW Vet to do this because we wanted Zeus in the best hands possible. It’s only been a week since his surgery and we FINALLY after 3 years of this battle, have our answers. His results showed he has a bacteria called Helicobacter Pyloris. We started treatment last night and are thrilled that he already seems to be feeling better. I am so happy we advocated for our baby and finally bit the bullet to have the surgery done! They really take the time to explain every detail and answer any questions you may have. Absolutely worth every penny! I wish we brought him here sooner!
Experiencia fantástica: We bring our tortoises here and are very happy with the care they get. UW vet hospital handled the diagnosis and euthanasia of our beloved sulcata very well. Losing him was awful but the vets were compassionate and gave us a really thorough picture of the situation and the clarity we needed to make the decision. We are now bringing our new redfoot rescues here and I'm impressed with how through and detailed the exams and explanations are. This is a good place. I really trust them with my animals.
Experiencia fantástica: Our 5 year old terrier had to have cataract surgery. They explained everything to us in a way that was easier for us to understand. They are very compassionate and knowledgeable. She had her surgery 3 weeks ago and is doing great. Now she sees too well cuz I can't hide anything from her. Lol. Every time we go there I know she's in great hands.
Experiencia fantástica: Very knowledgeable, kind, caring, dr O ophthalmologist was just the most personable vet I've ever met in my 45 plus years in rescuing and raising pets af all kinds. Her assistant Kate was amazing as well! Made the diagnosis of probable cancer for my support baby girl 8 years young a bit easier. They hurt with me because she's the sweetest thing ever.
Experiencia fantástica: A fantastic emergency vet, and one of the only vets in Wisconsin, and certainly in Dane County, that is very knowledgeable and skilled at working with rabbits and other exotic animals. They saved my rabbit's life twice. Yes, the care is expensive, but you should expect that when going to a cutting edge vet at a large research university. They even went above and beyond and gave us a live demonstration of how to trim our rabbit's nails more effectively after they resolved the emergency concern.
Experiencia fantástica: I appreciated the compassion shown to my soulmate Archie in his final moments. Although I did not get the outcome I wanted and Archie passed away, I believe that the staff and Dr. Leung tried their best to save my precious diabetic kitty Archie. The staff showed that despite the job they do, they are humans and losing pets in their care is never easy! My only disappointment is that a decision to do a blood transfusion was made too late and Archie passed before the transfusion started. The transfusion may not have made a difference, but now I will never know. This is all wishful thinking on my part anyway in holding on to a last hope. Thank you for the love shown to Archie. He was a kind, gentle soul who did not deserve such a brutal end to his life in the hands of MONSTERS disguised as professional pet sitters. Archie "papa" Ackley 2012 - 2024. I also had to edit this and add a star. I received in the mail today the blanket Archie was wrapped in and a clay paw print. What a beautiful gesture. This unbelievable gift brought me to tears! I'm not sure if this happens to everyone or if I'm special. All I can say is that I feel so loved in this moment by the UW Vet staff and feel unbelievably special. Thank you again for your compassion and love during this difficult time!
Experiencia fantástica: Great staff who worked hard to take care of my dog. Her surgery was a success and costs were lower than anticipated. I'll trust them with Mya anytime she's in need emergency care again.
Experiencia fantástica: Amazing experience. Professionalism, attention to detail, and empathy are wonderful!!!! We are so blessed to have been able to have our dog looked after by them. They have so many resources on site, such as MRI and pharmacy. I would highly recommend this facility.
Experiencia fantástica: We can't thank the team enough for the experience that we had with Cream, our pet chicken. We are grateful for how throughly our options were walked through every step of the way. The vet discussed best options for Cream's care though connecting with an avian specialist, and was very kind to us. Even though I ultimately made the difficult decision that it was for the best to euthanize my bird, because of the extreme nature of her health issue, we couldn't have had a better team to go through it together with us. The team did imaging that helped us better understand her health issue, helped us relieve her pain, let us take our time having some final moments with Cream and stay with her as she went to sleep. This vet does a great job and was supportive in whatever options we chose. Whether you do make the decision that it is in your pet's best interest to continue treatments or pursue euthanasia, the team is very kind and compassionate. I'd recommend them to anyone.
Experiencia fantástica: Cornelius just wanted to say thank you to Dr. Ellie and the rest of wonderful ER staff at UW! Even though they were already swamped, they saw him anyway due to concern for his injury when our regular vet was closed. Everyone was so kind and supportive. We've been in contact with our primary since and his little foot has healed up great! We also have a new stove cover/dinner routine that he's not so excited about but hey, beats crispy beans
