Experiencia fantástica: I cannot say enough good things about Helping Hands Vet in Richmond. They are an incredible surgery center for dogs and cats, and they truly made a difference for my 16-year-old Chihuahua. He needed 16 teeth removed due to severe dental disease (which unfortunately is very common in older Chihuahuas), and local veterinary offices were quoting us anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000. Helping Hands was able to perform the surgery at a significantly lower cost, and they even included pre-surgical blood work in the price which gave me peace of mind given his age. X-rays are available for an additional cost, but in our case we already knew what was going on with his teeth, so we opted not to add them. I also appreciate that they offer other surgical services, not just dentals. The staff was professional, efficient, and experienced. If you are looking for affordable surgical care without sacrificing quality, I highly recommend Helping Hands. They were truly a blessing for our family.

I have a 9 yr old pitbull, she had a huge mass on her right back leg that kept growing and was a size of a softball maybe bigger. I took her to her vet and they wanna charge me between 2700 to 3700 to remove her mass and test it to see what it was. I didn't know what I was going to do because I didn't have that type of money. Her vet did tell me to try this place out and im so thankful I did. They was able remove the mass and send it off for way cheaper and took such amazing care of my baby..The mass did weigh about 2lbs once it was remove. They stitch her up so good especially what they was working with. They answered any questions that i had concerns about and didn't care that I was a mess the whole time crying about my situation. This place is a life saver. My baby looks so much better with the mass gone. Sadly the mass did come back as cancerous but it was grade 1 and very low and had clean margins. They was able to remove the whole mass and its 10% chance it may come back but hey I will take it. So if you run into a similar situation please dont give up hope, give this wonderful place a chance. Experiencia negativa: Rude service and will nickel-and-dime you for the basics. When I lived in Kansas City, I took my rescue yorkie to a low-cost clinic that was much higher-volume than this clinic. My little guy was nervous, but the vet there sat outside and petted him for about 5 minutes before muzzling him and taking him back to successfully give shots and do a dental exam. Since Helping Hands requested to be forewarned of pet’s anxiety as they said it may require additional time to get procedures done, I guessed this meant that they would take more time to help pets feel comfortable. I informed them that my dog was occasionally nervous at the vet. First, they shamed me for not having him on medication or being able to take him to a behaviorist. I found the behaviorist remark pretty rich— if the people they are serving can barely afford basic health care for their animals, how many of them can realistically drop money on a behaviorist? I mentioned how my dog was handled at our last clinic. They came back to me and said “For the additional time you are requesting, we can start at a $48-$110 visit to see if he needs anxiety medication.” I cancelled at this point because I realized they are not the compassionate, low-cost service I thought they were. If a higher volume clinic in a much bigger city was able to safely accommodate my pet without extra fees and judgement, this place could too.

Living in Northern VA, the costs for major procedures can be outlandish, but this team was a total lifesaver for us. My 9-year-old Boerboel Mastiff recently needed surgery for oral complications. From the moment of drop-off to the time of pick-up, the staff was incredibly accommodating and took wonderful care of him. Everyone we encountered was professional and kind. If you are looking for high-quality, compassionate care at a fair price, this is the place to go

Experiencia fantástica: They saved our baby girl! She had a horrible infection in her uterus! It was an open one which we got lucky, we were able to see the drainage! We are in a tight spot at the moment so we reached out to a good friend of my boyfriend ... and he got the ball rolling for us. We had to crowd fund ... but we got there! They helped us out as much as they could! We love them there! They saved our baby girl!

Experiencia fantástica: My dog had to have her tail amputated and local vets wanted to charge $2k right before christmas. Thankfully they put us in touch with this amazing organization and we were able to have her surgery done at half the cost. We were very grateful to be able to get her the care she needed in a timely way at a price we could afford. The care was top notch and the staff were very kind.

I really appreciate all of the real time updates and in progress photos. Also on Christmas Eve the staff was willing to stay later than the actual cutoff time that is advertised to treat Caesar. His recovery has been Quick andwithout issue so all in all I’m extremely happy with the choice to go with helping hands.

The drop-off and pick-up, although seemingly chaotic, was very smooth and easy! Kudos to the staff because the day of our appointment was very cold and snowy. Experiencia fantástica: All the processes at the clinic are very well organized. From my first phone call to our check-out, I liked everything. The assistants explained in detail what to expect from the procedure, its pros and cons, the cost, and possible side effects. I received several reminders. There is a convenient patient communication portal. I chose Procedure 2 for my dog’s dental cleaning. The check-in time was 7:30 AM. The parking lot was full. The whole process was organized: you fill out the paperwork in the car, drop off your dog, have a consultation with the doctor’s assistant, and make the payment. I picked up my dog at 4:30 PM. The cleaning was done very well. Now my dog’s teeth look better than mine, IMO.

Experiencia fantástica: First and foremost I liked how friendly and non judgmental the staff was. Everything was explained to me in an easy and straightforward way. I loved the amount of instruction I got beforehand too as I’m a very anxious person. During the procedure I was able to hang out in their lounge where games, coffee and recommendations in the area were provided. Besides that, my dog was in great care. Her surgery went smoothly and although we had some complications afterwards (that are NOT the clinics fault), Helping Hands offered a recheck to make sure everything is okay and helped figure out what the next steps are. There I got further information on how to care for my dog and got another recheck in a few weeks. It feels like the team really cares for my dogs wellbeing which shows in my dogs behavior. She was literally excited to go back inside the clinic at her recheck. I would definitely recommend Helping Hands and would come back if my dog needs further care.

She remembered Molly from 2019 when they did her ACL surgery. We were worried about her age - she will be 14 in November. Taking out 9 teeth we were worried but in 2 days she was better than ever. Experiencia fantástica: We recently went through one of the hardest moments of our lives when our sweet Whiskey needed emergency surgery and, ultimately, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to let him go. From start to finish, Dr. Kristen Talbott and her assistant, Kristen, showed an incredible amount of compassion, care, and professionalism. Kristen, was so kind and informative, answering every single question we had and making sure we felt supported. Dr. Talbott was equally compassionate and explained everything thoroughly, giving us time with Whiskey before surgery. When she called to tell us his intestines were too badly damaged, she spoke with such honesty and gentleness. She gave us the time we needed to call our family and friends, and she even stayed on the phone with us as we cried. When we arrived, they placed us in a spacious, quiet room and made sure we were comfortable, even providing water and tissues, and allowed our other dog to say goodbye. They even let us put our other dog in a separate room after so my husband and I could have private time to say goodbye to our sweet Whiskey. They explained the process clearly, gave us as much time as we needed, and never once made us feel rushed. Their compassion made an unbearable situation just a little more bearable. It’s clear that Dr. Talbott and her team truly love the animals they care for, and they treated Whiskey with such dignity and us with such kindness and empathy. On top of that, we are deeply grateful for their fair and reasonable pricing. I never write reviews, but I felt strongly about sharing this. We cannot thank Dr. Talbott, Kristen, and the entire staff enough for their compassion, care, and support during this heartbreaking time. Experiencia negativa: DEAD DOG! PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY BEFORE SCHEDULING WITH THIS PRACTICE- On 9/11/25, my husband dropped off our 5 year old approx 75 lb lab for her scheduled routine spay appointment at 7:30am. She had not eaten anything past 10pm the prior evening and had no health history other than having a few litters of puppies with latest litter in May 2025. She was not yet in heat. Received note around 2pm that surgery went great and she was ready to pickup at 3pm. When picked up by my husband he received discharge paperwork from a vet tech but did not see or speak to the vet. Our dog seemed lethargic but overall just recovering from surgery and anesthesia. He drove home with her, brought her inside and she laid on the floor for the rest of the afternoon/evening taking sips of water but still remaining lethargic and rolling around some too when patted but no signs of pain or discomfort or anything else of note. We put her in her crate at 9pm after taking her outside to attempt to go to the bathroom but she did not. She walked in her crate but still somewhat sluggish. Everything was quiet until about 1am and she started crying loudly. More like howling. We came downstairs and she walked out of the crate and my husband and I laid with her rubbing her head comforting her. Her legs stiffened and her breathing changed suddenly with wide eyes- within 10 minutes she stopped breathing. We instantly called the emergency vet 15 minutes away and my husband drove there with her completely limp. She was declared dead upon arrival. There was no bleeding, incision looked good, slightly swollen around incision site. ER vet spoke to me on phone and said she ultrasounded body saw nothing and then syringed abdomen at surgery site and pulled straight blood- diagnosing her with internal bleeding. Vet relayed it appeared the vet at helping hands (Kevin Sanada) did not ligate/tie off the blood vessels properly. Her previous owner also a vet said the same thing based on the data. I called Helping hands numerous times on 9/12/25, 9/13/25, and 9/14/25, left voicemails with no return call or contact with anyone after dog died suddenly. Website said they would get back to us by Monday 9/15/25 end of day. 3 small children and 2 adults witnessed the trauma of this tragedy of a routine surgery and had to all miss work and school for the emotional toll it took and continues to take. During this time with no response from this practice, I also further kept receiving two automated texts asking me to review the care my dog received and how likely I was to recommend them during this traumatic time while I wasn’t receiving a call back from the practice. Stay far away from this practice. Based on all the facts and date above as well as what others have said and active disciplinary proceedings as recently as June 2025 from the Board of Veterinarians this practice does not value customer service, client/patient communication, and ultimately does not value best practice surgical care and best outcomes for your animals life. Please prevent yourself from being the next tragedy.

On Friday morning I took my 1 year old cat, Kimchi, to an urgent care and was told he needed an emergency surgery after they did an x-ray on him. They transported him to a local hospital, and long story short they said they needed 5k dollars up front, or they cannot perform the surgery. I live in Norfolk, and still I called vet surgery hospitals all over Virginia and North Carolina. Every single place asked for an absurd amount of money, and I felt so helpless. I was absolutely distraught, in shambles. There was such a large amount foreign bodies in his poor belly that it was a fatal/dangerous situation that needed immediate attention. I finally heard of Helping Hands and their very low surgery prices, then sent them a request through their website. I saw that they were closed over the weekends, so all I could do was pray that he would be okay for the next few days and that they would agree to take him in on Monday. On SUNDAY I received a call verifying the surgery he needed and communicating what the treatment plan, prices, and possible outcomes were looking like. This brought so much ease to my mind knowing before Monday came around the plan was already in motion. I spoke with Jasmine, who was patient, kind, understanding, and optimistic. The fact that they weren’t even open on weekends, yet they still reached out to patients who sent requests meant the absolute world to me. I made the drive to Richmond the next day, and stayed all day in their wonderful lounge area. It had TV available, outlets, games, puzzles, couches, wifi, etc. They saved my baby boys life! The doctors, the staff, and the service is absolutely incredible. Everyone was so so kind and wonderful. Both me and my fur baby felt loved, supported, and cared for during the entire experience. Without the extremely reasonable pricing, I could have lost my baby. I can’t thank you enough Helping Hands! ❤️❤️❤️

Experiencia negativa: I do not recommend this clinic, even for low-cost services. I had a scheduled surgery for my senior dog and had already completed and paid for senior bloodwork just a few months earlier through my regular vet. The clinic accepted the bloodwork and never mentioned that it might need to be updated due to timing — not when they received it, nor when I scheduled the procedure for a later date. On the day of the surgery, I was suddenly told I needed to pay for new bloodwork, with no clear explanation beyond “it’s required.” When I calmly asked why I was being charged again and that I was not ok the surprising charge and would have appreciated an explanation, the staff became defensive, accused me of being rude, and ultimately refused to proceed with the surgery — stating that every doctor on staff had declined to move forward. Shockingly, they even admitted they have recordings from the evaluation appointment when I first brought my dog in — something I was never informed about. I was taken aback, as I had no idea I was being recorded during a private veterinary consultation. That felt like a serious breach of trust, and potentially of privacy laws. This entire experience was deeply disappointing. If there were concerns about the timing of the bloodwork, that should have been clearly communicated in advance — during the evaluation or as soon as they reviewed the labs. That would have allowed me to update the labs ahead of time or choose a different clinic. Instead, their lack of transparency, poor communication, and unprofessional behavior caused unnecessary stress and wasted everyone’s time — especially my dog’s. I was not rude — I asked a fair question about surprise charges. Their reaction was defensive, dismissive, and lacked any compassion. I will also be requesting a refund from my bank for the evaluation appointment, as that was a complete waste of time and money. If you expect clear communication, respectful treatment, and a clinic that values both pets and their owners, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere. Edit** in Response to their explanation to justify their unethical practices. To Whom It May Concern, I wanted to respond to your message and express how disappointed I am with how this situation was handled. If concerns about my dog’s health — such as weight loss and incontinence — were truly reasons not to move forward with surgery, they should have been clearly communicated at the evaluation. You had already received complete records from my regular vet, including details about her ongoing conditions, which are not new. If your team had no intention of performing the surgery due to these concerns, that should have been stated clearly from the beginning rather than wasting everyone’s time. Your statement that “all doctors originally said no” was both unprofessional and unnecessary. The way it was phrased came across as dismissive and disrespectful, especially considering the stress this situation already involved. You cited my behavior as a reason for declining care, but I was simply seeking clarification about a surprise charge for day-of bloodwork that was not communicated clearly. If the medical reasoning behind it had been properly explained, I would not have asked further questions. Attempting to discuss unexpected charges does not equate to being rude — it’s called being an informed pet owner. Furthermore, I was not informed that my evaluation appointment would be recorded. If I had known that in advance, I would not have agreed to the visit. Recording clients without their consent is unacceptable and unprofessional. You had an opportunity to be compassionate and supportive in a difficult situation. Instead, you chose to be condescending and dismissive, and I left your facility feeling unheard and disrespected. That experience speaks volumes about your approach to patient and client care. Fortunately, I’ve since found another provider who has treated both me and my dog with empathy and professionalism — qualities I did not see demonstrated at your facility. Wish you all the best. They really took care of her and wasn't expensive especially after we were quoted aost $10,000 somewhere else. Kayla was great with Koulture and very thorough with explaining the process with me. The staff were kind and caring and let us know what to expect every step of the way. As a very small rescue organization, a hit like having a dog with a torn CCL hits very hard. Helping Hands made it a surgery that we could afford to do. Instead of the usual $6k to $9k, it was under $2k. Piper will be able to live a happy and painfree life going forward and as a young, 3-yr-old dog, I am so grateful that we had the opportunity to visit Helping Hands for her treatment. From the initial consultation the tech was knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. Everything was clearly communicated and drop off was a breeze. The surgery went well and pickup was easy and we went home with clear instructions and all the necessary medication. My dog has recovered very well and HH has followed up several times. She was able to remove the mass and spay my puppy. Had, for the most part, a pleasant experience. My little girl is still alive and healthy! The cost was considerably cheaper than the VCA vet clinic here in Maryland by thousands of dollars. They even cut Athena's nails which I greatly appreciate since it is such a chore and gave me extra blankets for my 2 hour drive back home for the blood from the suture site. Highly recommend. Now, if you can open up a clinic closer to me!

The size of our dog alone is a chore let alone having a two hour round trip for a very important procedure was at first a bit overwhelming to consider. The cost, of course, is roughly half what was quoted by our primary vet office - but there is no sense or feeling that any corners have been cut in the care of the patients. I love knowing that my beloved pup is being cared for by such caring and experienced people, and that thanks to HH I can afford to keep him as healthy as possible!

She was having life saving surgery and they came and asked me. Experiencia fantástica: Can not recommend this place enough! I have taken my dog here for 2 operations and both times the cost was literally 1/4 the price other places were quoting me. But on top of that the staff is very friendly and helpful and attentive and they did an excellent job on both of her surgeries! She had to have a bilateral enucleation (the removal of both her eyes) when she was a little over 1 year old and now that she’s 6 years old she had to have a very large cyst removed and they did a great job on both!!! It was very sad and scary having to get her eyes removed and they made the process so much better. Very grateful for them I would highly encourage anyone to go here for their animal surgical needs! I put a picture of her cyst and before and after the surgery and a couple of her face to show how it looks with her eyes gone but it is kinda hard to see cause she is all black so I put a few pictures. She is so happy and a great dog! This place helped save her life <3

They fit you in for procedures quickly and at a 3rd of the cost of our regular vet. We've had more than 5 procedures done with them on 3 different pets and they are incredibly consistent and reliable. Not one complication since bringing our dogs to them. We'll be trusting Helping Hands for all necessary procedures when needed.

I love how you complete the forms online, along with the payment. Receiving all the aftercare messages the day after was a nice surprise. Our girls were looked after thoroughly, even having their nails cut complimentary, their teeth looked fantastic and all of the paperwork we received on pick up was very detailed. Especially the detailed pictures of what teeth were removed. The check in was quite long as they get you to complete more paperwork, which could be done online. Oherwise i would highly recommend and we will be using Helping Hands again.

Experiencia fantástica: I don’t typically leave a review for every place I visit, but I was so happy with the way Helping Hands took care of my dog, I felt compelled to share. My 10yr old English Bulldog needed to have some teeth taken out. My primary Vet did not feel confident doing the procedure and referred me to a specialist. The specialist, whom I will not name, was not transparent with pricing, and when I dug into the reviews, I discovered that they were quite expensive. I think I called 4 different places and was told by all of them that they do not operate on English Bulldogs. So I kept looking and Helping Hands was referred to me. The scheduling method they use is all online, and I was not sure I was going to like it. Turned out to be a very efficient process. The payment is all online and they were very transparent with their prices. My dog was dropped off at 0730 and I was able to get her at 5pm. She seemed fine when I got her, and has recovered well since having her home. I am very grateful to Helping Hands and would recommend them to anyone that thinks they may require their services.

They were very clear and upfront about what they could and couldn't do (they don't diagnose or do xrays/scans. I'd already been to an emergency vet who had given me a diagnosis so that was ok). All of the follow-up visits and medications were included in the original price, which took away so much of the worry for me. The vet was professional, understanding and thorough in answering my questions. They were even happy to refill and change the post-surgery pain meds my cat was on (at no extra charge) when I had difficulty getting him to swallow the original ones. Many thanks from me and my lil tailless cat!

Found an alternative clinic with same pricing as yours but easier scheduling and better customer service. ***Im not really sure why this business exists? *I was able to pay for full neuter services at the time of request but was just sent a bunch of random negative information telling me all the other places I could go to get my cats neutered and saying over and over how expensive they are when thats not even true?? I really don't know what this organization does besides rude vet referrals. ***Use Prevent a Litter in Richmond, they will actually help, not tell you to go elsewhere.
