Fantastic experience: We recently had a shitzu (Shorkie) come into our family and this was my first visit with Southpoint Animal Hospital. We had a great experience! Dr Elise Hattingh was very thorough explaining everything during the exam. The staff was very professional/helpful and friendly upon arrival. This is a great place that will take great care of your pet.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Greif and the staff at Southpoint Animal Hospital are knowledgeable, professional, and compassionate. They provide excellent care for my pet and extended kindness in her final days.
Negative experience: I had an in home euthanasia with Gentle Journeys for my sweet 10 yr old chihuahua Blue on Dec 23, 2025 after a rapid decline due to IVDD and osteoarthritis. Southpoint Animal Hospital was Blue’s first veterinary experience at just 6 weeks old and her last at 10. Gentle Journeys informed Southpoint that Blue passed and no one from Southpoint Animal Hospital reached out to offer condolences. It’s disheartening because Blue received all her care as a puppy with this practice and Southpoint is one of the last Vet experiences she had. I expected more compassion and empathy regarding pet loss from this practice. A simple phone call or email during this time of grief would’ve made a positive impact as these thoughtful gestures only take one minute. RIP Sweet girl Blue️

Fantastic experience: Love this clinic, they have accommodated me when my dog was sick and needed an urgent visit and they have helped us keep costs down my recommending a combo product for our dogs heartworm and flea/tick prevention. Always a friendly face and quick to answer the phones, we really couldn’t be happier with the entire team there and of course our vet Dr. Garcia!
Negative experience: It ended, for us, with a lack of patience, understanding, and moral consideration. For over four years, the professionals at Southpoint Animal Hospital have provided care and invaluable advice for our pets. We specifically want to thank River and Dr. Lapham for their positive attitudes, knowledge, and kindness. To provide some background, my husband and I have two dogs that were seen by Southpoint. One is an older, friendly dog and the other, a fearful puppy. The puppy, Lyra, is a little over 1 and was found under a shed. We adopted her and have done our best to socialize her and reduce her fears. Last week, we had an appointment with Southpoint for a routine exam and vaccinations. She had received vaccines a few months prior at Southpoint and we communicated to the tech at the start of the appointment that she is nervous around strangers. The veterinarian who had treated her previously had taken time to give her treats and deliberately avoided facing her and making prolonged eye contact, which eased her fear. This approach was also recommended to us by the behaviorist we work with. We expected that 1) Lyra would be treated similarly or 2) we could discuss the possibility of administering anxiety medication prior to returning for another visit or 3) we could develop a training plan to move towards her being more comfortable at the vet. We were told that a different vet would be consulting with us this time on administering the vaccines. The vet entered the room and directly engaged Lyra reaching towards her and attempting to have her take treats from her hand. Lyra barked and tentatively approached to take the treats and then retreated from her several times. I asked what techniques can be used for dogs that are fearful like ours and she listed a few that exclusively involved restraint. She then suggested we try to put a muzzle on Lyra. Lyra had demonstrated no aggression when this suggestion was made. We trusted her expertise and were willing to try this method. She said we should try to stand behind her to force her into the muzzle. We complied (although uncomfortable with the direction) and Lyra became increasingly afraid and demonstrated “whale eyes.” I requested we take off the muzzle. At some point, the conversation with the vet became about our failings in socializing her. We have tried very hard to encourage positive interactions with her and other people. The conversation felt unproductive, accusatory, and dismissive of the progress we’ve made with her. It was also deeply upsetting to my husband, who has no close family left. He became increasingly upset as the socialization point was reiterated and said that the facility should provide means of connecting clients who want to work on socializing their puppies instead of providing criticism. He said that the vet did not care about our dog. The vet felt she was being disrespected and elected to leave the room. She sent in another tech to inform us, again, that it was “not their job” to facilitate community connection. The tech repeated that there was a list of trainers in the packet we should have received at an early appointment. We understand that many veterinary staff (and medical professionals) are overworked and burnout. We understand that our dog is challenging and there are limited options for administering vaccinations. None of that excuses the absence of care. There was no discussion about what we need to do to have her ready for vaccines or alternative options. We were only informed we wouldn’t have to pay for the appointment. I’m disappointed that this experience directly conflicted with the facility’s community-driven mission and Fear Free designation. Ultimately, I'm sad that we followed instructions that may have compromised Lyra’s trust in us.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful! The providers and vet techs are very professional, take time with you and your furry friend, and listen to your concerns. Dr. Farling and Dr. Crenshaw are thorough, knowledgeable, friendly, and send your pet’s lab results in a timely manner. As a nurse, I enjoy reading lab work and was so happy to be able to have the results and get suggestions back for Clifford. Clean rooms and facilities. I am happy to wait for amazing service that Southpoint offers because at least you know they’re taking time with you and it is not rushed. Thank you Southpoint! Updated review: Absolutely impressed with how Southpoint continues to be our #1 vet. They were able to squeeze Clifford in for vaccines as a drop-off appointment. Fantastic experience: We love Southpoint Animal Hospital. We have been seeing Dr. Lapham for many years between our dogs and he is phenomenal- very down to earth and talks through any scenario as if he was treating his own pet. The staff at SPAH is amazing as well- everyone is so friendly and helpful.
Negative experience: I’ve taken my puppy here throughout her first year of life. In the beginning, our experience was wonderful—our concerns were heard, and we felt the team truly advocated for her health. Over time, however, we’ve noticed a concerning decline in communication within the treatment team. Most recently, after the vet increased our dog’s medication dosage, she developed moderate blood in her stool and diarrhea. We called four separate times and spoke with a front-desk representative each time, who assured us the vet would be notified. Despite reporting active bleeding, we never received any follow-up—no call, no email, not even a quick check-in to see how she was doing. On top of that, we had to be the ones to request that a stool sample be run, rather than having the medical team proactively guide us through appropriate next steps. I understand that clinics get busy, but failing to respond or check on a puppy experiencing bleeding right after a medication change is unacceptable. At this point, it felt like we were the ones having to manage and direct her treatment for a chronic condition, rather than receiving coordinated and attentive care.
Fantastic experience: Hands down the best vet we’ve ever had. Dr. Greif was so good to us when we had to send one of our dogs over the rainbow. She took time to really explain his prognosis and answer all of our questions. Her and all of their staff at SPAH were so kind and supportive when it was finally time. They’ve continued to give the same excellent service with our other 2 other animals since then! If you are looking for a vet you should definitely go to Southpoint Animal Hospital!

Negative experience: My experience at SPAH has been one of my worst vet clinic experiences in 38 years. I recently adopted a 8 year old foster who became sick soon afterwards. Over about 4 weeks my kitty had several bouts of severe vomiting and couldn’t eat or drink for days. Sadly, with both bouts of illness, SPAH was unable to see her because they were booked up. (I had to get care for my kitty at an urgent vet clinic). When she was finally seen at SPAH, I felt pressured to pay for additional bloodwork even though some had been done a few weeks prior. I did agree to an ultrasound to try to get some answers. It was done on a Thursday and I got a call right away from the vet who did it. He explained the results and told me Dr. Garcia would call me later that day to talk about a treatment plan. My kitty was diagnosed with IBD and would need meds and prescription food, long term. I never heard from Garcia that day and called the clinic many times each day following but didn’t get to speak to Garcia until 6 days after the ultrasound! During this time, my cat was in need of medication and special food to treat her illness and hopefully prevent another episode of vomiting, dehydration, feeling terrible, and more vet visits. During our call, I felt strongly pressured to agree to surgery for biopsies which I was told could run about $3000. (I had already spent $2900 in 4 weeks.) I made it clear I would not be agreeing to the surgery for financial reasons. After this call, it took another 6 days (with me calling the clinic daily, again) before I was able to get the prescriptions for the special cat food I needed. I am so disappointed in the lack of service and follow up that occurred when my kitty seriously needed better care. In my experience, Dr. Garcia does not follow through with her clients once you’ve agreed to and paid for expensive tests, etc. This made experience me feel that she cared little about what happened to my pet. Throughout my experience at SPAH, I felt like my pet needs were neglected and I often felt not heard. In addition, I felt pressured to agree to things I couldn’t afford and believe I was upcharged for items that I don’t think were necessary. One bright spot in all of this was Gray, someone who often answered the phone when I called and sincerely tried to help me.
Fantastic experience: As per usual, my cat and I got thoughtful, thorough attention from Dr. Doyle and the attending staff, for a very reasonable cost. For the 20 plus years I have lived in the triangle, Southpoint Animal Hospital has consistently proven to be top notch.
Fantastic experience: Dr Garcia really impressed me with some new ideas on a recurring problem with allergies. My dog is 10 and my previous dogs have all gotten outstanding care at Southpoint Animal Hospital.

Fantastic experience: Best experience at a vet thus far! My 11 year old cat had an upset stomach for a few days, so we brought her in. We didn't have to wait in a waiting area, instead, they took us into the kitty exam room where we could actually let our cat out to explore the room (which was new to me, and her!) They had cute places for her to hide and feel safe, that had detachable lids so they could easily get to her. They were the first vet I've been to that didn't have to sedate her to get samples or even trim her nails! I honestly cannot praise the staff enough, but I can say: I would be dumbfounded if you didn't also have a great experience here!
Fantastic experience: Excellent and very quick service with no declinations even thirty minutes till close, due to getting off work late and they were still able to get my boy chomper weighed in and were able to get me flea medication asap! 10 out of 10!
Fantastic experience: I've taken my dogs to Southpoint Animal Hospital since 2015. I adopted two rescue dogs knowing that they would receive excellent care from their veterinarians and staff. The staff is always very helpful and they have the technical knowledge that makes the visit easier. The vets are very kind and take their time to explain everything in a way that's understandable. They are up to date on research, journals and anecdotal experience. They are extremely caring. I highly recommend Southpoint for all the right reasons.

Fantastic experience: The vet techs were excellent caring for my dog on her vaccine and blood draw visit. I got lab results the next day - Dr. Doyle graciously took plenty of time to explain those results and answer questions. Cannot say enough good things about this veterinary practice!

My 15yr old Siamese, Elly, was due for her 6mo bi-annual senior wellness exam & blood work for another follow up of her T4 thyroid after having I-131 radiation injection therapy back in April. Fantastic experience: I had to bring in my mom's suddenly ill service dog while on a trip to Durham. They took us in quickly, offered good suggestions and medications. We did a follow up visit same day to be sure everything was stable and the same vet assured us the dog was good for travel next day. They also called me next day to check on him. Excellent care.
Fantastic experience: On August 20th, 2025, I brought my cat to Southpoint Animal Hospital and found out she needed emergency surgery to survive. It was one of the scariest moments of my life, but the staff were incredible—clear, compassionate, and supportive every step of the way. Dr. Grief and the entire team treated my cat with skill and me with kindness, making a terrifying situation so much easier to bear. They didn’t just save her life—they gave me peace of mind. If you want a place that treats your pets like family, this is it!

Fantastic experience: My cat has become very anxious with vet appointments as she's gotten older and I was incredibly nervous taking her to her first appointment since moving out of state. Southpoint's team was so great with her and it was obvious that they care. They allow me to ask as many questions as I need and provide several different options for care so I can feel like I'm making an informed choice for my cat.
Negative experience: Very kind staff, but the service is lacking. I moved to the area recently and had thought about transitioning care of my dog to this hospital. I was in no particular hurry however when I learned their prices are consistently 120% - 200% higher than my current vet (also a highly regarding South Durham establishment). Fast forward to just last week, I rescued a stray dog and was able to get a same day appointment to have him checked out. It was imperative that I know he was safe to be around other animals as I have one at home, and a couple of potential fosters also have existing pets. We had a 5p appointment and were kindly greeted and sent to a room. I had to remind them of our presence when neither a vet nor tech visited by 5.15p. Several times, I mentioned that I wanted to perform all tests necessary to ensure the utmost safety for the new guy to be around our pets. He was given deworming meds, all the usual vaccines,.. and tested positive for heartworms. I mentioned again I wanted all the tests to ensure his safety around other animals. My current pet is a rescue but fortunately has not had serious health concerns, so I had lots of questions around transmission of heartworms and intestinal worms. My questions were addressed with an instruction for quarantine for two weeks! I understand this is protocol and we've tried, our current home and routine does not comfortably accommodate quarantine. At the time, a cornea test was performed which I would not have elected to have performed. But ...after 2 hours and $500 I was shocked that a parvo/distemper test was not conducted on the found pup (who had symptoms though no fever and had clearly been a stray for some time). Communication and transparency around tests, protocols vs. needs, and prices could have been much better. Timely care could have been better-- we left after 7p for a 5p appointment. Care itself, I believe could have been better. The vet seemed unsteady or inexperienced when drawing blood. The vet tech ended up doing it. Finally, there was a tick near the dogs eye that the vet had pointed out but did not make motion to do anything about. When I asked that they try to remove, they were unsuccessful and said, "we'll let the meds take care of that..." They left the room to run the tests and I was able to remove the tick easily while they were out. I was told at the end of the appointment that I would receive a follow up call today (Monday) and that did not occur. Today ( Monday) I called at noon to request a refill of eye drops because I misplaced the vial. Here we are at the end of the day and still have not had the prescription approved. (At my current vet, refills or med pick up happens same day or theyre able to transfer Rx to pharmacies when applicable, in this case, it wouldve been). Again, the prices here are higher than other area vets I have called including my current veterinary hospital by 120% - 200% Given the "meh" service and the poor follow up, I certainly do not see a justification in higher prices and will not be going back. It is a shame because they are incredibly close in proximity. They seem well regarded by patients in the area and I would use them again in a pinch. I am glad I was able to be seen.. However, I will not be changing over to them for regular care for my animal needs.

Fantastic experience: I had an appointment with Brain Doyle today, my dog a Boxer mix named Charles has two torn ACL’s he was in pain, Charles is older. Although no surgery Charles is no longer in pain. Thanks Brian.
Positive experience: I am very disappointed in this clinic's ability to communicate. I have called trying to get a hold of Dr. Garcia six times and not once has she been able to get back to me regarding an issue with my cat's medication. The issue also stemmed from a discrepancy in her notes and what she prescribed, meaning she made a mistake. Instead of owning the mistake and talking to me or even trying to correct it, she continued with the incorrect prescription, again, without contacting me, and now I have paid for an incorrect dosage after doing everything in my power to get this problem resolved. Again. I called. Six. Times. Over the course of several weeks. No response. It is disappointing, because the majority of the staff at this clinic seem lovely and welcoming. Edit: Bumped up to 3 stars because of the efforts of staff to refund me for the medicine and providing clearer communication from here on out. Thank you to the owner/manager for reaching out and to Dr. Doyle for taking Misha in so that we can continue giving her the medicine we have worked so hard to figure out. Your help is very much appreciated.

Dr. Doyle has operated on our dog Lito to remove a cancerous tumor and our dog Haze for her torn ACL. They are all professional, courteous, and caring. Fantastic experience: This place is great! We are from out of town and my dog ate a few of her toys. She was sick and my husband was at Duke having a liver transplant. I was totally stressing out. They took her in right away and kept her until I was able to come and get her. (She was actually fine). They were very understanding and took great care of my dog. I would not hesitate to go back again.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful staff—they understand both animals and their people, and they personalize care to make our dog as comfortable as possible during procedures.
Positive experience: If you call because you have a question, expect to have to call back the next day to remind them you’re expecting a callback. The vets have not been good about returning phone calls or emails. I’ve also had a few issues getting prescriptions that my dog needs filled. I’ve called and got confirmation they’ve been called in, only to have to call, again, the next day because they weren’t called in, resulting in three days that my dog did not have his pain meds. All that said, they’re great in person…

Fantastic experience: This was our first visit to Southpoint Animal Hopital and it was excellent. From the vet tech, nurse and Dr. Elise, we knew our Aoife was in great hands. Dr. Elise gave Aoife the absolute best physical she has ever had. She made recommendations for care. She treated us and Aoife with the utmost respect and kindness. There was a delay for my appointment but the front staff was courteous and kept me looped in on why there was a wait. The tech’s were friendly and gentle with my fur baby, and the vet thoroughly explained the lab work at a level i could understand. An incredible experience.

One of our cats is very anxious, and this is the only vet she has been to where she stays calm and is comfortable with the staff. Fantastic experience: I cannot recommend SPAH enough. Every single staff member we’ve interacted with over the past 8+ years has been excellent. You can tell they truly care about the animals. We are so grateful for Dr. Doyle, in particular. After our dog was diagnosed with CKD, Dr. Doyle was both a wealth of knowledge and comfort. He was able to break down complex medical issues and lab results in order for us to make the best decisions. We often had to take our dog to an emergency hospital, and Dr. Doyle always made sure to follow up. We always had a million questions, and Dr. Doyle was always there to patiently answer each of them. He was our guide up until our dog’s final days. We are so grateful for all of SPAH’s support, knowledge, and deep care for animals. I will never go to another vet.

Fantastic experience: SPAH has been our very for about 5 years now, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. As a mom to an adventurous greyhound, we've needed everything from regular to emergency care and they have been a great team every time. They've also helped me learn a lot of doggy first aid over the years. They are thorough, responsive, patient, and you can really tell everyone who works there genuinely cares about the well-being of your pet. The staff all know our pet, Juice, and Juice couldn't be more excited to go to the vet. Even when she's hurt or doesn't feel well, she bounces into the office. With Juice undergoing oncology treatment at NC State, which SPAH referred us to, they've still been active members of Juices care team, allowing us to stay closer to home for check ups inbetween oncology appointments.

Fantastic experience: If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. The compassion that this team has provided our furry friends has been so wonderful. We always have felt like family since we first stepped our paws in the door. From being greeted by Grey or Eddy, to being taken care of by River or Elias, to Dr. Garcia and Dr. Elise H. giving such complete information about our pets' conditions, I have always felt in good hands. They get down on the same level with my scared kitty Mowgli and give lots of love to our old girl Molly. You guys truly epitomize what it means to work in Veterinary practice really caring for pets and it shows. When scary news may be present, you guys have been so kind and caring. Negative experience: This used to be a good vet but it's drastically gone down hill. We loved when Dr. Thompson was here but recently have had negative experiences. Most recently, our 12 year old toy poodle who has a Stage 3/4 heart murmur was diagnosed with a bladder stone. The vet told us that he'd need surgery for it, but was worried about his heart. At first the vets acted like there weren't many other options and he'd need the surgery. We were told they'd send us a quote for his surgery but they never did, so I had to contact them again along with a list of questions that I wanted answered before scheduling him for his surgery. We ended up going to a cardiologist to get the echo done to confirm he could be under anesthesia and the cardiologist said he had very high blood pressure and wanted to start him on blood pressure medication ASAP. I contacted our vet back at Southpoint to ask her opinion on the blood pressure and she looked into his file and said his blood pressure hasn't been checked in over 2 1/2 years. She claimed that it's normal not for vets to check it each time. And while I understand it may not be common every time, why on earth would you not check the blood pressure of a dog who has a very serious progressive heart murmur that is already at a stage 3 to 4?!? Even at his yearly exam, they didn't check it. Again, knowing he has a very serious progressive heart murmur why hasn't this been checked or even suggested to us in over 2 years?! My husband and I were appalled, as we were under the impression they would be checking this. In addition to this, their other services have not been great. They forget things, dont follow through with things, we've been charged for services they said they wouldn't charge for, etc. We finally took him to another vet and when we explained the bladder stone issue this vet told us "don't worry about it if it's not causing issues" which I'm appreciative for because Southpoint made it seem like a bladder surgery was a need even with his heart condition, which could severely put him at risk, while this other doctor is literally telling us not to worry about it until it becomes a problem. Overall I do not recommend Southpoint Animal hospital. They have gone downhill tremendously. And the quality of service does not justify the price. We spend hundreds of dollars each visit and the quality of service is not great.

Fantastic experience: A couple of months ago I had a not good experience getting my cat's nails trimmed (review below). Before that, all my experiences with this practice had been excellent. So I went back (with some trepidation) last week when my cat's nails needed trimming again. This time it was perfect - the tech was very caring, unrushed, and personable and I felt my cat was in the best hands. Unfortunately, I didn't get his name or I would definitely ask for him specifically next time. I'm happy to be able to recommend this practice wholeheartedly again.

Dr. Lapham is our primary vet, but we’ve nearly every vet in the clinic and they are all amazing.
