OakVet Animal Specialty Hospital: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Our dog had a lot of complex issues going on, and it was an incredibly stressful time, but Dr. Chen at OakVet was so patient and supportive throughout everything. She carefully worked through the possible causes, explained the treatment plans moving forward, and made sure we understood our options. Even in such a difficult situation, we felt heard, supported, and cared for. We’re very thankful for Dr. Chen’s compassion and dedication
Fantastic experience: Truly wonderful, caring, competent and professional vets and vet techs during a very difficult time.
Fantastic experience: Incredible service! Specialty veterinarians and vet technicians are excellent! Comprehensive assessments and evaluation. The ultrasound here is much cheaper than my regular vets office! If you have a sick pet this is the place to go for help!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Funes is amazing! Highly recommend. Knowledgeable, communicative, and very friendly. Our dog is in great hands with this crew.
Fantastic experience: Dr Wignall and his team gave very good care to my doggie. There was a complication after surgery as my doggie too active and I wish they instructed STRICT rest after surgery to avoid the seroma complication. But once it happened the communication was very good and my doggie healed well and is now back to normal! Thank you Dr Wigall and team!
Fantastic experience: Efficient, timely, kind staff, easy parking, wonderful doctor who writes you emails to explain your visit (!!!), no long waiting time for appointments.
Hi Patricia,
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re glad to hear everything from scheduling to care felt smooth and supportive, and we’ll be sure to pass your feedback along to the team.
Thank you again, Patricia! We’re so happy to hear you had another great experience with our team. We truly appreciate your continued trust in OakVet and your thoughtful feedback!
Fantastic experience: Had a great experience having my 6 year old lab shepherd mix have her TPLO done at Oakvet. Such a great team it’s now just about a year and she’s doing so well back to her normal self. Thank you all so much
Fantastic experience: Our 16.5-year-old kitty was a patient of Dr. Kidd’s and received exceptional treatment and compassionate care for her small cell lymphoma. We’re incredibly grateful to Dr. Kidd and the entire team at OakVet for their kindness and support throughout her care.
Negative experience: We had a borderline traumatizing experience with Oakvet. I dont even know where to begin, it was so much. The moment I brought my cat in, I was told rushed by an administrator of some sort telling me that my cat was about to "pass away", and I better give them $1300 real quick if I wanted to save him. My cat looked nowhere close to dying or anything but they did not give me even a minute to gather our thoughts, and kept pressuring me to hand over the money. Voila, the moment we gave them the money, their entire sense of urgency disappeared and they actually left our cat untreated and alone with us for over an hour. I sat there thinking, if it was such a dire situation, how have they left him untreated and just hanging out with us for hours with no treatment? It was so bizarre, omg. Add to that, even though we were told our cat was dying, it did not stop them from pitching us to neuter him "since we were there anyway!" I was like, if my cat is passing away, how can you be sitting there trying to upsell another procedure to me so casually? You scare the hell out of me of me and my family to get money out of us, then leave us alone like his treatment is nothing, and then upsell other things to us like he's in the peak of health. There were so many little things like this that happened, it would take really long to list out all the things we went through. The nurses, btw, are experts at making you feel bad about even taking a minute to consider your financial situation before saying yes to whatever they want. When we tried to understand the procedure/ask questions about what was recommended to see what was necessary/feasible for us, the nurse was extremely condescending and told us what we were doing was "a last ditch effort before euthanasia." They constantly made us feel like bad people for not just blindly saying yes to going into thousands of dollars of debt. I could go on and on about this aspect of our experience. My goodness. Also! To top it all off, our cat actually got a secondary infection at this hospital, something he has taken months to get better from and is still recovering from. He has gone through a lot thanks to this place. After we got his treatment done at Oakvet, we visited a similar 24/7 dog & cat hospital in the Berkeley area, and their estimate for the same stuff came to half of what Oakvet charged. Oakvet really represents American capitalism to its core - you are treated like a cash machine, and humanity and empathy go out the window because all everyone there wants to do is profit just a little bit more. I am posting this so others are aware and think twice before coming to this place.
Fantastic experience: Our little dog, Longan, just recovered from a complex surgery for an extrahepatic liver shunt and bladder stone removal at OakVet. After consulting with several other specialists in the South Bay, we found OakVet to be the clear winner. Compared to other local options, the overall experience here was far superior, and the pricing was much more reasonable for such a high-stakes procedure. Dr. Funes was our rock during the whole experience. Her patience and practical advice were exactly what we needed while navigating a scary diagnosis. Her caring nature and passion for her patients are truly inspiring. We managed Longan’s treatment medically for several months before the surgery, and Dr. Funes was always incredibly responsive. She even replied to an urgent email regarding Longan's blood in urine on a Saturday (her day off), which we deeply appreciated. If you are looking for Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Funes would be my No.1 recommendation! When it came to the surgery, Dr. Grange was absolutely exceptional. During our initial surgical consultation, he was incredibly candid and forthright about the procedure. He explained the technical steps of the liver shunt surgery and the bladder stone removal with such precision and clarity that it was a total game-changer for us. Having already consulted with several other specialists in the South Bay, I can confidently say that no one else was able to break down the complexities as clearly or effectively as Dr. Grange. His transparency and obvious expertise gave us the confidence we needed to move forward. The surgery itself was a major success, and his skill as a surgeon is truly world-class. Now that Longan is one month post-op, he is recovering beautifully—his surgical scar is practically invisible. We are so grateful to have had such an elite surgeon looking after our boy. Lastly, want to share a huge thank you to the nursing and surgery coordinating team as well. They looked after Longan with such attention to detail during his post-op stay, and the frequent updates they provided meant the world to us. If you’re looking for a specialty vet that combines elite expertise with genuine heart (and fair pricing), OakVet is it!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Wignall is the best! My pup (4-year-old, female, 65-lb Cane Corso mix rescue), who I absolutely adore, had a partially torn CCL and needed TPLO surgery. I spent a lot of time researching and asking questions, ultimately consulting eight different clinics. Pricing ranged from 3k in Mexico, to 5k non-board-certified vets, 7k out of state, and 9k+ board-certified surgeons in the Bay Area. Despite the range, each option left me with some degree of uncertainty—something I wasn’t willing to compromise on. From the first consultation, I felt completely informed and supported by Dr. Wignall. He took the time to thoroughly explain the procedure—the risks, expected outcomes, and recovery process—in a way that was clear, thoughtful, and compassionate. He patiently answered every question without feeling rushed. That initial appointment alone gave me the confidence to move forward with scheduling the surgery. On surgery day, Dr. Wignall was calm, reassuring, and incredibly professional. I could tell he truly cares about both his patients and their owners. Throughout the procedure, I was updated regularly, which meant the world to me during such a stressful time. A huge thank you as well to the techs and staff who helped facilitate the exceptional care and experience for me and my pup—responding to nervous pet-parent calls and seamlessly coordinating logistics. The aftercare was just as exceptional! Dr. Wignall provided detailed recovery instructions, monitored my dog's progress, and continued to be very communicative and supportive throughout the healing process. Beyond the medical care, Dr. W offered genuine emotional reassurance and understanding, which made a difficult situation much easier to navigate. It’s hard to overstate how challenging and emotional this entire process can be—from receiving the initial diagnosis, to choosing a surgeon, to surgery day, post-op care, and everything in between. Finding a clinic that allows you to focus on your pet’s recovery—while they handle the rest through skilled surgeons, proactive staff, and consistent, transparent communication—made all the difference. We're about four moths post-surgery, and my lovely pup is happily back to her regular activities! If you are considering TPLO surgery or an orthopedic procedure for your pet, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Wignall! His expertise, communication, compassion, and dedication truly set him apart.
Fantastic experience: My German Shepherd had Cushing's Disease and Dr Matthew’s was able to get it under control. Very kind and professional staff. Very positive experience!
Negative experience: My fiancé and I brought our cat to the ER for an obstruction of the urethra. After leaving our cat in the hospital for 48hrs and spending over $5,000, they called us and told us we had to place another catheter and spend another $2800 or consider euthanasia. We spoke on the phone with a vet technician named Vanessa who was very condescending and rude. She flat out told us if we didn’t hurry up and decide then our cat was going to die. She has no empathy or no bedside manner for owners who are dealing with stressful situation. Any time I tried to speak she would speak over me and my fiancé, leading to her responding incorrectly to what we were trying to say. When my fiancé went in to visit with our cat he was met with a technician who refused to identify herself (who turned out to be Vanessa) after telling him that our cat would die in 24-48hrs if we did not go along with one of their treatment plans. Overall the experience has been horrifying. Vanessa was quite possibly the most abhorrent person I’ve ever dealt with during a situation like this. Hopefully this type of behavior will be rectified with a swiftness because a person like this should not be allowed to interact with people in trying situations.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Wignall did an excellent job with my four year-old miniature American Shepherd. She had her second TPLO surgery in June and can now run and jump and play with no obvious sign of any limitations. I’m very pleased with the results.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Wignall and his team were absolutely amazing at helping my dog. I brought my Yorkie here for surgery for luxating patellas and hip surgery and Dr Wignall was extremely descriptive at walking me through the surgery process and recovery steps and was great at answering any questions I had before and after the surgery. I would trust him and the doctors here again for any surgery needs my pets ever need in the future
Fantastic experience: Always a pleasant experience! The staff at OakVet are incredibly helpful , attentive , and genuinely caring . Their support and compassion bring such comfort , especially during stressful times for myself and my teacup poodle London. I always feel confident leaving London in their care. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: OakVet has set the bar incredibly high and is truly in a league of its own. In October, Dr. Updegrove, Dr. Grange, and Dr. Funes saved my cat’s life after a freak gallbladder rupture. We had been to multiple vets and hospitals, and no one could figure out what was wrong. Ultimately, we opted for exploratory surgery, and Dr. Grange did exceptional work. After surgery, my cat refused to eat and needed a nasal feeding tube. I was terrified, but the team reassured me every step of the way, and they were right. His recovery was fantastic. I trusted OakVet again today with my other cat, and once more, after vague symptoms that didn’t point clearly in one direction and a referral from my regular vet, Dr. McIntyre quickly figured out what was wrong and took care of it. We are excited to see Dr. Funes again for continued care. They are a specialty vet for a reason. If your pet has strange, complex, or hard-to-diagnose issues, this is the place to go. Everyone here is incredible… the doctors, vet techs, and reception staff. Yes, you may wait. Yes, your pet will be taken to the back for triage. But it’s clear they are highly organized, deeply knowledgeable, and prioritize cases thoughtfully and appropriately. Will always be coming back here. It’s simply a waste of time and money to go anywhere else and not get the right answers when I always get the right answers here. Their kindness, skill, and knowledge is unbeatable. They take the time to explain and communicate everything thoroughly and are so patient with all of my what ifs and worst case scenario questions. ERs can sometimes make you feel rushed and not heard but that’s not the case here.
Fantastic experience: Our Golden Retriever was in distress and suddenly passed on Saturday. Took her to Oakvet to see what the issue was and if anything could be done. They examined her right away, were honest about what was happening and were very caring during the whole process. We really appreciate their compassion.
Hi Gary,
We are so sorry for your loss. Thank you for trusting us during such a difficult moment. It means a great deal to our team that we could provide clarity and support during that time, and we truly appreciate you sharing your experience.
Fantastic experience: After being told at UC Davis that my cat had only three months to live, OakVet gave us hope when we had almost none. A year later, she is still doing well because of the extraordinary care from the doctors, technicians, and front-desk staff at OakVet. They treated us with genuine kindness, empathy, and love during the hardest time of our lives. I will always be deeply grateful to OakVet.
Hi Padma,
Thank you so much for sharing this. We know how difficult that time must have been, and we’re honored you trusted OakVet with your cat’s care. Hearing that she is still doing well a year later means so much to our team. Please give her a gentle hug from all of us, and thank you again for allowing us to support you during such a difficult time.
Fantastic experience: My cat was near death twice in one week. Once in shock for unknown cause, once with asthma. She is alive and well now. She was rushed into care even before I was asked for any information. Staff were kind. Veterinarians met with me and allowed plenty of time to ask questions and understand options. I couldn’t ask for better care.
Hi Inese,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We’re incredibly glad to hear your cat is doing well and that our team could be there for her when she needed it most. It truly means a lot to us that you felt supported and informed throughout her care.
Fantastic experience: Really great experience here with their internal medicine department. We came initially for a second opinion with oncology when our cat had a stomach issue, and the oncologist walked us through the diagnostic steps but also had us meet with a doctor from internal medicine. Dr. Silvia Funes was fantastic. We had a great experience here.
Hi Todd,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We’re glad our oncology and internal medicine teams were able to support you and guide you through the diagnostic process. We’ll be sure to pass along your kind words to Dr. Silvia Funes and the team — we truly appreciate your trust in OakVet.
Fantastic experience: I have used OakVet for specialty veterinary services and emergency for several years now. Their Internal Medicine department has literally saved my pets lives. Hopefully, you never need emergency services. If you do, OakVet will triage every situation and involve you in every aspect of their care. They care for every pet.
Hi Barbara,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. We’re honored to have been part of your pets’ care over the years, and it truly means a lot to know our Internal Medicine team made such a difference. We appreciate your trust and your kind words.
Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough good things about OakVet. Their level and depth of incredible care and attention they provide for my doggo is above and beyond. The doctors and staff are wonderful and truly care about my pup and my concerns, and it’s obvious by their fast and detailed replies to emails and ease of appointment scheduling. We actually end up going to OakVet over our primary vet because of this. Couldn’t recommend them more!
Hi Amy,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. We’re truly grateful for your trust and are so glad our team could support both you and your pup. Your kind words mean a great deal to us, and we appreciate the opportunity to be part of your dog’s care.
Positive experience: Good care, and that's most important, but TERRIBLE customer service. My wife and I spent a total of 8 hours there for our cat. How long everything took was MUCH longer than what we were led to expect along the way.
Hi Marc,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad your cat received the care they needed, and we truly appreciate you recognizing that. We’re sorry for the extended wait and for the frustration caused by the timeline not meeting expectations. Your experience is important to us, and we will be sharing this feedback with our team as we continue working to improve communication and the client experience.
Negative experience: I recently took my dog to OakVet for TPLO surgery. While the medical outcome appears successful, I have significant concerns regarding their billing transparency and animal handling protocols. Regarding the costs, I accept my own error in not scrutinizing every line of the $13,665.30 estimate prior to signing. However, it is frustrating that the staff never disclosed that the mandatory 6-week and 10-week follow-up X-rays would be additional out-of-pocket costs. When a client pays thousands of dolalrs for a major procedure, it is reasonable to expect that standard, required post-operative checks are either included in the package or explicitly verbally disclosed as separate liabilities. Future clients should be aware that the initial massive bill is not the final cost. Furthermore, I was disappointed by their handling protocols. First, they remove pets to a back room for examinations rather than conducting them in the exam room with the pet parent present; this lack of visibility is concerning. I imagine this space to be crowded with every other animal and a high-stress inducing environment. Second, despite my bringing my dog in his harness and leash every time, they used their own slip leads (which function mechanically as choke collars). This contradicts modern veterinary best practices, as slip leads can compress the airway and trachea, especially in a stressed animal. A specialty veterinary hospital should prioritize safe handling practices (such as using the owner's harness and leash) rather than utilizing convenient tools known to cause potential harm.
Thank you for your feedback and for trusting us with your dog’s care. We’re very glad the surgical outcome has been positive.
We apologize for the frustration regarding the follow-up X-ray charges. These are typically discussed as part of post-operative care, and we regret that this was not clearly communicated in your case. We’re reviewing our process to ensure better clarity moving forward.
With respect to handling, we want to clarify that our use of slip leads is a deliberate safety measure. In our experience, owner-provided collars and harnesses can sometimes be loose or improperly fitted, which can allow pets to slip free in a busy hospital setting and create dangerous situations. Our staff are trained in the proper use of slip leads, which are widely used in veterinary hospitals and allow for safer, more controlled movement of patients.
We appreciate your feedback and the opportunity to explain our practices.
Fantastic experience: I want to thank the wonderful empathetic team at OakVet Animal Hospital this morning for the kindness and total respect they ALL showed as I had to put down one of my cats this morning unexpectedly. The entire process was so well organized and personable. No waiting at all. So organized with total respect. Thank you so much to everyone during this process. So respectful - professional - Understanding. Very grateful to this very well team of professionals throughout this entire process. Update (12/23/2025)...Thank you again for your beautiful reply. In addition to the wonderful services. Oak Vet Team even sent me a Sympathy Card a few days ago. That was very appreciated and top notch caring and kindness. Thank you again for all the kindness shown.
Hi David,
Thank you so much for your kind words. We are truly sorry for your loss and honored that you trusted our team to support you during such a difficult moment. It means a great deal to know our care and compassion brought you some comfort. Please know our thoughts are with you, and we’re wishing you peace as you remember your beloved cat.
Fantastic experience: The staff at OakVet is professional, knowledgeable, resourceful, compassionate, helpful, and courteous. From the front office staff to the internists and surgical team, and all of the technicians along the way, our experience was extremely positive. The quick response to questions and concerns via phone, text, or email is impressive. I highly recommend OakVet.
Hi Janice,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We’re grateful for your trust and thrilled to hear that every part of your visit felt supportive and positive. Our team works hard to be responsive and compassionate, and it means a lot to know it made a difference. We truly appreciate your recommendation!
Fantastic experience: Took my dog here after suspecting he ate mouse poison at night. Incredible service and professional people. Helped him right away and reasonably priced so impressed. Highly recommend
Hi Patrick,
Thank you for trusting OakVet during such a stressful situation. We’re glad our team was able to help your dog quickly and provide the care he needed. We truly appreciate your recommendation.
Fantastic experience: They saved my cat! Jasper had FIP, which my regular vet did not determine. It’s usually fatal, but Dr. Mathew’s knew of a fairly new treatment that saved my boy. He’s healthier than ever now!
Hi Anne,
Thank you so much for sharing Jasper’s story. We’re thrilled to hear he’s doing so well, and we’re grateful for the trust you placed in Dr. Mathews and our team. Stories like this mean so much to us.
Fantastic experience: OakVet has long been our emergency care center (and at times our primary care!), and always been exemplary. While getting in can be a challenge sometimes just due to their volume and wait times, doctors like Dr. Funes are just magical- and provide trusted, knowledgeable guidance and just a sincere feeling of love and care for our dogs. If you need somewhere to go when it's most important, OakVet should be at the top of your list
Thank you so much!
Fantastic experience: I was sent to OakVet when my local emergency vet was full. It was first on the list and I needed help with my dog after she was attacked. The location and parking lot are secure despite being in Oakland, I felt safe there. They took my dog to back pretty quickly, and I was given a form to check-in. I waited probably 1-2 hours before I was able to talk to a doctor about treatment plans. After speaking to the vet, I was able to go home and wait for the call to pick up my girl. They were good about answering my calls when asking for updates, and when I picked up my dog, she was cleaned up and they gave me the prescriptions I needed. The bill is high but that's normal for an emergency vet (plus I have pet insurance!). One thing I will appreciate is that the main vet I talked to stayed extra hours past his shift to get the job done. It shouldn't have to be this way, but I was thankful.
Hi Elaine,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad we could be there for your dog when you needed urgent care and that our team kept you informed throughout the process. We truly appreciate your understanding of emergency wait times and your kind recognition of our doctor and staff’s dedication. Wishing your girl a smooth and speedy recovery.
Fantastic experience: They were great to me and my dog. They squeezed us in even though we had never been there before. They were very transparent about cost and treatment. I arrived feeling worried and lost about what to do and left feeling like my questions were answered and my dog was on the mend. I would highly recommend this office to anybody with a pet.
Hi Tanna,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful words and recommendation. We’re so glad we could be there for you and your pup when you needed answers the most. It truly means a lot that you felt supported and informed every step of the way. Wishing your dog continued healing!
Negative experience: It’s the sort of boutique pet care facility that offers amenities and full grain leather sofas but will turn away an established patient without batting an eye during an emergency if they think there’s a chance of slow pay. My dog, one of two that have been seen at Oakvet regularly in the last two years to the tune of a little under $9000, lost his footing coming down a flight of stairs in the rain and I think he may have a broken wrist. When I called Oakvet less than a mile away to see what the wait was like and to inquire about a payment plan (we discontinued his insurance when my partner was AI’d out of her job recently). The receptionist literally chuckled, said “sounds painful”, and told me to “call around” for “some kind of charity” to have it looked at before hanging up. Not sure who this review benefits. I guess if transactional emergency response is your thing go for it. If you want care that suggests an element of humanity, this isn’t your place. Id consider that if this is just a numbers thing…if revenue and their bottom line are their primary patients….how would you guess they treat your family members when you’re not in the room? It’s a legitimate concern that should be weighed heavily. I wish you and your pet well. D
Hi D.L.,
We’re truly sorry to hear about your experience and the stress you and your pet were facing in such a difficult moment. That is never how we want anyone to feel when reaching out for help. We strive to treat every client and patient with compassion and respect, and we take feedback like this very seriously. We would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you directly to better understand what happened and to help ensure this does not happen to someone else. Please feel free to reach out to a member of our management team at your convenience. We truly wish you and your dog the very best.
Fantastic experience: Was very responsive and my dogs were well diagnosed and treated. It’s not inexpensive, but the care is very good.
Hi Sherry,
Thank you for your feedback! We’re so glad to hear your dogs were well cared for and properly diagnosed and treated. We truly appreciate your trust in our team.
Fantastic experience: All went well. Dog got into medication stash (attracted to chewables) and shared with another dog. Not a good chewable medication to consume. Dogs were monitored for 12 hours each. Each dog was around $1,800. Sometimes, it does not pay to have a spare pet medication stash on hand. $3,600 gone.
Hi Ann,
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re glad to hear that both dogs were safely monitored and are doing well after such a scary situation. We truly appreciate your trust in our team during an unexpected emergency.
Fantastic experience: Every time we have come to the clinic Ajax..he has been treated with great care..thankes it makes a lot of sense to be with a big dog is treated ...
Fantastic experience: Got two knee operations on my Akita there. Both were long procedures and long recoveries. But oakvet was helpful and underestanding. And the dog is back to her healthy running ways!
Hi Michael,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We’re so glad to hear your Akita is back to running and feeling great. Our team knows how challenging long procedures and recoveries can be, and we’re grateful you trusted us throughout the process. Please give her some extra love from us!
Fantastic experience: I’m here at 4am and over the life of my dog, a Shiba Inu, for the last 7 years, I thought he had seizures. I would take him to the vet and that was always something that was in the conversations with Vets. Today I find out he is having symptoms that are more aligned with either inner ear vestibular issues or brain function issues. Since he started these at around 4 years old, it’s most likely an inner issue. No one has previously mentioned it. The Vet here is great! It can be expensive but that’s health care for pets, unfortunately. Thanks OakVet. This place knows it stuff. Pic for attention.
Hi Samuel,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. We’re glad our team was able to help bring you some clarity and support during such a stressful moment. We know how frightening these symptoms can be, and we’re grateful you trusted us with your pup’s care. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything as you navigate next steps. We’re here for you both.
Fantastic experience: I’m grateful for the staff that’s always there, for them picking up the phone when we needed them, for being there for my bb, supplying me with medication’s we needed and helping her live a long life. The staff was also kind and helpful during her passing. I appreciate all that you’ve done and all that you do.
Hi Demetric,
Thank you for sharing this with us. We’re grateful for the trust you placed in our team throughout your baby's life and during her passing. Our hearts are with you.
Fantastic experience: Dr.Kidd's oncology team at Oakvet took very good care of my 14 year old dog who was diagnosed with lymphoma earlier this year. He's in remission now and doing great! The team carefully addressed any concerns I had and thoughtfully answered my questions. I highly recommend.
Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re so happy to hear that your senior pup is in remission and feeling well — that’s truly wonderful news.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Silvia Funes at OatVet and the Internal Medicine team have been amazing in my dog's journey to health. My pup had some unknown scary symptoms and Silvia and team were kind, patient and thorough to help us get some concrete answers. They had great advice and did not upsell any tests or procedures (we had issues like that with our past vet). Because of OakVet, I have a solid plan for my dog and she is in stable good health. You can tell Silvia really cares about the animals she works with. Her attention to detail, patience and kindness were notable. I would recommend SIlvia and the OakVet team to anyone who asks.
Hi Marissa,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We’re thrilled to hear that Dr. Funes and our Internal Medicine team were able to help you find answers and get your pup on a stable path to better health. Your trust means a lot to us, and we’re grateful to be part of your dog’s care journey. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever need anything.
Fantastic experience: Excellent experience all around! Our indoor cat got loose and we were worried he was injured. The staff here were great, they were very helpful on the phone and did a free triage exam at 11:30pm on a Friday. They concluded that he wasn’t injured, just a big scaredy baby. They didn’t charge us anything for the triage exam but encouraged us to contact them if anything changed. Highly recommended, nice gated parking areas as well.
Hi Justin,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We’re glad our team was able to reassure you and make sure your kitty was safe after such a stressful night. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if anything changes — we’re always here to help.
Negative experience: I went there yesterday as a good Samaritan after rescuing a cat that had been tossed out of a car on Highway 580. It was extremely upsetting as soon as I walked in with this traumatizing situation, the first question that was asked was would I be financially responsible . I’ve worked at vet hospitals. I understand that they have to take care of business. I understand there are hospital policies and protocols, but the extreme initial and ongoing hyper focus on Would I be the one paying for the 175 emergency exam was really kind of gross. The overall demeanor and tone of everyone, but one person there was cold, callous and uninterested in the trauma of this animal, and frankly the trauma I was experiencing being part of this rescue. The office manager was the only person that showed a decent level of kindness and understanding. I left there knowing I would not go back ever for an emergency service there or recommend it to any of my friends, neighbors or clients. There are much better emergency clinics in the East Bay and Marin
Fantastic experience: Was pleased with the efficient service and the streamlined instructions and advice support after my do’g’s surgery. They are patient with the dogs and their owners.
Hi Miriam,
We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience! We’re so glad you and your pup felt supported through the surgery and aftercare process. Our team strives to make every visit as smooth and stress-free as possible. Thank you for trusting us with your dog’s care!
Fantastic experience: I went to so many different veterinarians and also pet hospitals even going to Mexico before coming to Oak Vet. I was trying to save money, but it was in the end, a waste of time. It’s cheaper and more efficient to go to the people who really know what they’re doing and that’s Oak Vet. Dr Funes is awesome. She stays on top of her research and she even speaks internationally on her experience. Save time, money, heartache and suffering for you pet. If you have a serious issue, just come here.
Hi S Lee,
Thank you for sharing your experience. We are glad that Dr. Funes and our team were able to provide the clarity and care your pet needed. It means a great deal to know you place your trust in our expertise. We appreciate your recommendation and are here whenever you need us.
Fantastic experience: We came to Oakvet when one of my dogs got very sick and both our regular vet and emergency vet could not figure out what was going on with her. She was so sick we thought we would lose her. The emergency vet referred us to Oakvet and after going through a very thorough intake process we were able to see Dr Silvia Funes. I cannot say enough good things about her and the Oakvet staff. She was compassionate, patient, and able to come up with a process to identify what my dog had almost right away. About a week later we had our answer. Throughout the process you could really tell that she cares. She was also very up front with how long the treatment process would be, and answered all of our questions. The staff have always been kind and efficient. I would 100% recommend
Hi Ericka,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We are grateful you were referred to us and that Dr. Funes and our team were able to support your dog through such a stressful time. Our goal is always to provide clear communication, comprehensive care, and a thoughtful plan forward, and we’re glad that came through during your visits. We truly appreciate your recommendation and wish your pup continued health.
Fantastic experience: I had such a great experience here with my French Bulldog. I had decided to go forward with the BOAS surgery for my little guy since he was really struggling with his breathing, the heat, and exercising. I had had another consult with a surgeon down in Los Altos which didn't go well. He was obtuse and rude and I didn't trust him for a second to take care of my dog. So I scheduled another consultation with a different vet.I had read that Iron Horse Vet Care in Dublin offered BOAS surgery so I arranged an appointment. I met with Dr. Haburjak. He spent a lot of time with me asking pointed questions about my concerns and explaining the BOAS procedure in great detail, from surgical process to risks/complications to benefits. I was convinced after this visit that it was the right thing to do for my little guy despite the risks. When I learned that they had another surgery location in Oakland, I opted to go there because it was 10 minutes from my home. My surgeon for the procedure was Dr. Wignall and he was phenomenal! He explained the procedure prior to beginning and called me right afterwards with post-op reports. I cannot say enough how grateful I am to this team of excellent surgeons and vet techs that took such great care of my fur baby. We are now 6 weeks post op and he is doing AMAZING in all areas of his life: breathing normally, can exercise normally, and a big bonus: much less snoring! Thank you Oakvet and Ironhorse Vet for setting us up for success! I highly recommend either location to take incredible care of your fur babies.
Hi Sarah,
We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us. We’re grateful you entrusted your French Bulldog’s care to our teams at Ironhorse and OakVet, and we’re thrilled to hear how well he’s doing after his BOAS surgery. Dr. Haburjak and Dr. Wignall will be so glad to know their time, communication, and care made you feel confident and supported throughout the process. Hearing that he’s breathing comfortably, exercising normally, and even snoring less truly makes our day. Thank you for your recommendation — we’re honored to be part of your pup’s journey.
Fantastic experience: Always exceptional service. Due to the need of specialist care for my elder Chihuahua-Min Pin mix we have been to OakVet several times now. Dr Sylvia Funes in Internal Medicine and the various technicians are all exceptional. And they have common sense too so you'll get practical advice as to how to trim costs or manage incidents at home so you don't have to go to the vet each time.
Hi Linda,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review! We truly appreciate your kind support and are glad to hear that Dr. Funes and our team have provided exceptional care for your pup. It’s always our goal to offer both high-quality treatment and practical guidance to help pet parents. We’re grateful for your trust in us!
Fantastic experience: My cat,Pancake, received wonderful care from the staff and Internal Medicine vet! I highly recommend Oakvet.
Hi Suzanne,
We’re so glad to hear Pancake received such wonderful care and that you had a great experience with our Internal Medicine team! Thank you for recommending OakVet and for trusting us with your sweet cat.
Fantastic experience: OakVet cared for our dog during a couple of major medical issues. The medical care was top-notch, and when we ran out of options, the personal care was good as well.
Hi Richard,
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re grateful you trusted us to care for your dog through such difficult times and are glad our team could provide both exceptional medical care and compassionate support throughout the process.
Negative experience: My cat received an expensive endoscopy surgery to determine whether or not she has cancer. I was given false hope and false results of no cancer. After pushing for more expensive testing that I was told wasn’t necessary, it was concluded that she does have cancer. OakVet has not given me any indication that they care to make this right and no compassion has been given. The false results we received have wreaked havoc on my cat and her healthcare.
Fantastic experience: Very good follow up and diagnosis. Our cat had cancer and unfortunately, passed away. Dr. Funes, her internist at OakVet was absolutely accurate with her prediction on quality of life and amount of time she has left.
Hi H,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are truly sorry for your loss and know how difficult saying goodbye can be. We're grateful that Dr. Funes and our team were able to support you and your beloved cat during such a challenging time. Our hearts are with you.
Fantastic experience: I had to bring our cat in for an emergency to remove something he swallowed on a Sat morning. OakVet immediately took us in and had such caring staff. The location is very secure with parking. I felt like we had the best care ever and they are very responsive and fast. Our cat had to get an endoscopy to have it removed when vomiting couldn’t happen. They are very transparent with fees and payment. Luckily I was able to pay for the procedure but if you are going to have pets, one should definitely consider pet insurance since any pet visits are always expensive and work can only be done if you can pay for it upfront. Again, our family is lucky we are able to do what we can for our furry family members. But I have to do a SHOUT OUT to everyone at OakVet Animal Services! Best care ever! From the front desk staff , to the back: Wen, Holly, Allie, J…who did the billing, Dr. Josh and esp Dr Silvia who performed the endoscopy!
Hi Karen,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We're glad we were able to be there for your cat during such a stressful moment and are pleased to hear he received the care he needed. We truly appreciate your recognition of our team — they work hard every day to provide attentive, transparent, and compassionate care. Your shout-out means a lot to all of us. Wishing your furry family member a smooth and full recovery!
Fantastic experience: Our sweet girl Bobbi was in such good hands here during her 24 hour hospitalization. Every staff member was caring, communicative, and transparent about costs and procedures. Life saving care!
Hi Hana,
Thank you, Hana! We’re so glad to hear that Bobbi received the care she needed and that you felt supported throughout her stay. Our team truly appreciates your kind words and trust in us!
Fantastic experience: If you’re looking for a Veterinarian or Specialty Hospital for your beloved pet, go here. The urgency we were met with by the staff, followed by the compassion and empathy the staff gave us on our first visit was beyond belief. Thank you, all of OakVet’s staff for everything you did for our fur baby, my wife and me. You are true heroes! ❤️
Hi Eric,
Thank you so much for your heartfelt words! We’re truly honored that you and your pup felt cared for and supported during your visit. Our team strives to provide both urgency and compassion in every case, and it means the world to know it made a difference.
Fantastic experience: I have had two cats treated here...in oncology and internal medicine. The staff and vets are knowledgeable and sensitive to the sick critters. I am very happy with my experience for my grrls while in their care.
Hi Caroline,
Thank you for trusting us with your girls’ care! We’re so glad to hear you had a positive experience with our oncology and internal medicine teams. Your kind words mean a lot to all of us at OakVet.
Fantastic experience: I was referred to OakVet by my existing bet for a specialty screening. My visits were quick snd efficient, no longer unnecessary waits. It's good since my dog requires lots of treats to stay calm.
Hi Amanda,
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re so glad your visit was smooth and efficient — and that your pup felt comfortable (and well-treated with treats ). We appreciate you trusting OakVet with your pet’s care!
Negative experience: Save yourself grief and anxiety and go to Jack London Pet Hospital instead. I was referred to OakVet by Jack London Pet Hospital after my husky was diagnosed with oral hemangiosarcoma. Outside of the tumor, she was still full of life--eating, playing, and doing her usual zoomies. I knew it was terminal but she wasn't at the end of her life yet. I went to OakVet ER 3 times when the tumor would bleed heavily. The first visit was ODD. They told me to sit in my car with her until the bleeding stopped and they would check in with me. The second visit was devastating. Without lab results, the same vet told me my dog was severely anemic, would likely pass soon, and began pushing me toward euthanasia. Even made comments like "she's so sad, she's so gray, she's just down and not he same" and fake frowned at me until I said she didn't know her at all and I've spent almost 12 years with her. I made it clear I was exploring treatment options and that her quality of life was still good, but the vet was dismissive and condescending. Lab results later showed regenerative anemia--not what she assumed--and my dog did not need transfusions. They even brought her back to me covered in dried blood with no attempt to clean her up while she was in their care. When I returned a third time at 2 AM needing help to administer a clotting pill, I was told they refused to see us "for the same issue again." After pleading through hysterical tears they let me in. A tech even said "ew, disgusting" when a blood clot fell from her mouth. Completely unprofessional and heartless. I was already in earth-shattering grief trying to make the best decisions for my dog, and OakVet made that pain so much worse. The front desk staff were kind, but the vet's lack of empathy and compassion was shocking. Jack London Pet Hospital has been everything OakVet was not--caring, respectful, and humane. If you value empathy, respect, and true emergency care, avoid OakVet.
Negative experience: Please, do NOT bring your pets here. This place only cares about taking your money, not helping your animals. We came to Oak Vet for an emergency with our cat, and it was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had with any vet. They made us wait over two hours in a separate room while our cat was clearly stressed and uncomfortable. When the doctor finally showed up, they barely did anything, just asked a few questions and didn’t even seem to look at our cat or do a proper check-up. Then a coordinator came in trying to scare us by making the situation sound much worse than it was. It was unprofessional, cold, and honestly felt like a money grab. Our cat was anxious and scared, but instead of handling her with care, they labeled her as “aggressive” and said they couldn’t do any tests without sedating her, which of course came with another big fee. In the end, nothing was done. We took our cat to a different vet the next day, and they were kind, professional, and treated both us and our cat with respect. We were allowed to stay with her the whole time. I regret ever stepping foot in Oak Vet. They wasted our time, stressed out our cat even more, and tried to take advantage of us in an emergency. Save yourself the frustration and go anywhere else.
Hi Hailey,
We’re truly sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate you taking the time to share this feedback. Fantastic experience: I’ve had nothing but great experiences with OakVet! They’ve cared for two of my cats, and every time, the staff has been so kind and understanding of my situation. I’ve called numerous times with questions or concerns about my cats, and they’re always patient, helpful, and genuinely happy to assist. You can tell the entire team truly cares about the animals and the people who love them. Highly recommend OakVet to anyone looking for compassionate, professional veterinary care!
Hi Tiffany,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review and for trusting us with the care of your cats! We’re so glad to hear you’ve had great experiences with our team and that our staff has been supportive and attentive. We truly appreciate your recommendation!
Fantastic experience: Dr Kidd and his team were wonderful. They were informative and caring, always letting us know all of our options. Mr. T was in good hands!
Hi K,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We’re happy to hear that Dr. Kidd and the team provided informative and compassionate care for you and Mr. T. We’ll be sure to pass along your thoughtful words to them.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Funes is absolutely the best! She is so kind, patient and compassionate and knows her stuff ❤️ We appreciate her and her care so much. She makes our world a better place by making our animals happy for us.
Hi Dianna,
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful review! We completely agree—Dr. Funes is an incredible veterinarian whose compassion and dedication make a world of difference. We’ll be sure to share your kind words with her and the team.
Fantastic experience: OakVet is probably the best emergency vet in the area. if you need emergency vet services the vets there will do their best to take care of you and your pets. They did their best to support me with difficult situations with my two cats recently, and it would have been so much harder without them doing everything they could. Great people who really care.
Hi Alex,
Thank you so much for your heartfelt review. We’re so glad our team could be there for you and your cats during such a difficult time. Our goal is always to provide care and support when it’s needed most — your kind words mean a lot to all of us at OakVet.
Fantastic experience: I have a 19 1/2 year male cat. Recently, he started losing weight, not eating and drinking a lot of water. I called my regular Vet, who explained that there was a two week wait for an appointment, and suggested I go to a Vet Emergency Clinic. I called OakVet, found out the location and consult fee. I grabbed my ailing cat, put him in a cat carrier and headed out! Although the Vet is located in an industrial part of West Oakland, it has a secured parking lot. When I entered the clinic, an assistant met me right away! She got relevant information and took my cat back to make him comfortable! Although I was told there would be a 2-4hour wait, a wonderful vet, Natalia Pfaff examined my cat within a half hour! She was compassionate and gave both me and my cat the dignity and care that we both needed! She explained the cursory examination and suggested bloodwork and X-rays to get a better understanding of his condition. She started with bloodwork to see what was going on with his kidneys! Sadly, his kidneys had shut down and he was experiencing discomfort! She said that due to age, etc., he was not able to recover! It was a hard decision to euthanize him to avoid further pain! I was allowed to say goodbye to him for as long as I want d to and I had the option to stay with him during the euthanasia. I could have chosen to stay with him after he passed. but I already said goodbye! In summation, the entire vet experience was compassionate, unhurried, and peaceful! He looked at peace when he passed! in summation, I found this clinic to be safe, clean, professional and compassionate! I would highly recommend this clinic if your animal needs immediate help and your regular vet can’t accommodate an emergency visit to help your situation!
Hi Adele,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for trusting us with your senior cat’s care. We’re truly sorry for your loss, but we’re grateful we could provide comfort and compassion during such a difficult time. Dr. Pfaff and our team appreciate your kind words.
Fantastic experience: My experience with OakVet was fantastic! My dog had ACL surgery with Dr Grange and the entire process was great. Dr Grange is wonderful
Hi Jay,
Thank you for sharing this fantastic feedback! We’re thrilled your dog’s ACL surgery and overall experience went smoothly. We’ll pass your praise to Dr. Grange and the team. Wishing your pup a smooth, speedy recovery—please reach out if you need anything along the way.
Negative experience: Front desk and technician are very biased. Kept telling me there are other pets came in were more critical than my dog. Holding my dog for 10 hour waiting to be seen without water. I realized afterwards when we arrived home. My dog as of today few days ago went to this place has kidney failure due to their biases and poor diagnosis. My dog had to be put away by another vet clinic few days after on 9/11. They have their sale pitch down. Their "critical" is which pet/customer can ring up the highest bill goes first!
Hi Benny,
We’re deeply sorry to hear about your experience and the loss of your dog. This is not the level of care we strive to provide. Please reach out to one of our managers directly so we can learn more and address your concerns.
Fantastic experience: My vet recommended I take my senior dog, Molly, to see Dr. Sylvia Funes. Molly was diagnosed with Cushing's disease and one of Dr. Funes areas of expertise is endocrine disorders. We found Dr. Funes to be extremely knowledgable and upfront about Molly's prognosis. Her Cushing's is caused by bilateral tumors on her adrenal glands, probably cancerous. Dr. Funes started her on Vetoryl and has consistently emailed me, checking on her condition and reaction to the medication. I am very pleased with all the interactions we have had with staff at Oakvet. I highly recommend this clinic and Dr. Funes.
Hi Madeline,
Thank you for sharing Molly’s story and recommending OakVet and Dr. Sylvia Funes. We’re glad the Vetoryl plan and ongoing check-ins have been helpful, and we’ll be sure to pass your praise to Dr. Funes and our team. We’re here for you and Molly—please reach out anytime.
Positive experience: Shoutout to Silvia Funes and Jason Kidd for finding and treating my cat for stage 4 cancer. They deserve a 5 star rating but the front desk and techs at OakVet made the experience more difficult and confusing. His cancer was incurable so it was an already stressful time coordinating all of his appointments and visits. Better communication and coordination would've made it less stressful.
Hi Brian,
Thank you for sharing your experience and for recognizing the care provided by Dr. Funes and Dr. Kidd. We’re truly sorry to hear that parts of the process felt confusing during such a difficult time. If you’re open to it, we’d appreciate it if you could give us a call so we can better understand what happened and address it with our team.
Negative experience: My vet referred me to this hospital for my cat who had a fever and unknown infection since she was extremely lethargic , not eating nor drinking .At intake around 2PM ,the staff was very friendly however they advised the wait will be 2-4 hrs before my cat could be seen . We were kept separate from our cat while waiting and not allowed to see or comfort her . After 2.5 hrs of waiting , I was told that my cat has a higher heart rate which is normal because of the change in the environment. She was finally seen by the Vet Josh VanGeem who told us she may have an infection or inflammation and has a fever and dehydrated and needed bloodwork and maybe a water hydration therapy which I assumed was an IV procedure . Josh kept referring to my female cat as a he & I kept correcting him but he kept referring to my cat as a male cat afterwards. I was sent home unless I wanted to wait another 2-4 hrs for the test results . After the bloodwork 2 hrs later , I was told she needs antibiotics and hydration injection which I agreed to however that will take another 2.5 before she's ready for pickup . I received a call at around 7:45 PM to pick her up . After my cat arrived home , at 8:30 PM , her behavior completely changed and she was traumatized , hissing and limping and hiding under the table & bed for 2 weeks and didn't want to be touched , eat or drink any water and suffered anxiety and PTSD! My cat was a very social & friendly cat before she was taken here . I don't know what they did but I am assuming they used a syringe to inject water through her mouth and pulled her front legs back to restrain her as she resisted while being forced with water in her mouth . The reason why she had an infection is because she has severe perondititis and was losing all her teeth so her gums / body was fighting an infection . The last thing she needed was to have something forced in her mouth . Did I tell the Vet that , Yes! Did they care ? No! Did they inform me that the hydration treatment was Not through an IV , No! I’m never taking her back here . Her body and mouth must have been forced to take the injections or restrained somehow where her right leg is strained and pulled back .The staff seem to be more dog friendly and walked the dogs and their owners out to their cars while us cat owners seem to be neglected and our pets ignored & abused . I made a formal complaint to my Vet clinic and to this OakVet hospital and never received an apology from this Vet Hospital or the Vet and it’s been 1 month! In addition -for a vet exam, bloodwork , hydration & antibiotic shot =$750! Do yourself a favor & go somewhere else .
Hi Tam,
Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We’re very sorry to hear about your experience and the concerns you’ve raised about your cat’s care. This is not the experience we want for our patients or their families. If you’re open to it, we’d appreciate it if you could give us a call so we can better understand what happened and address this directly with our team.
Fantastic experience: I had a great experience at OakVet ER. The wait was shorter than expected, and the ER doctor took the time to answer all my questions. I learned way more about my cat's care and treatment there than from my regular vet. All the employees I interacted with were kind and caring. I highly recommend them.
Hi Rachel,
Thank you for your wonderful review! We’re so happy our team could make your visit a positive one and give you the information you needed for your cat’s care. We truly appreciate your recommendation.
Fantastic experience: OakVet was open on a Sunday, could see us without knowing us, and, best of all, evaluated our dog honestly and accurately so that we knew we were okay waiting to see our regular vet. We are very grateful for this facility and the kind, knowledgeable staff.
Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re grateful we could provide support and reassurance for you and your dog, and we appreciate your trust in our team.
Fantastic experience: I brought my elderly cat in for emergency euthanasia, as he was having seizures, was scared and suffering. The staff was quick, responsive and incredibly kind. Everyone was patient and caring, and made his transition as easy as it could be under the circumstances. The process was less expensive than my previous vet. I am very grateful to have taken my cat here. They even sent condolence cards after. Wonderful vet!
Hi Jerusha,
Thank you for sharing your experience and kind words. We’re so sorry for your loss, and we’re glad we could provide comfort and care during such a difficult time. Your trust means so much to us.
Negative experience: Night doctor, large built female. , is quick to put your pet down. Especially if you say you don’t have the money to keep your pet there. Don’t bring your pet here unless you REALLY need to
Hi Jessica,
We’re very sorry to read your impression and that you felt this way. Our doctors never take end-of-life decisions lightly—these are always made with careful consideration of the pet’s medical condition and the family’s wishes. We encourage you to reach out directly to one of our managers if you’d like to talk more about your experience.
Fantastic experience: Excellent care at every level. Security is good to for the area. They also aren't owned by a venture capital group like so many other vets now that try and upsell and jack up prices for no real reason. This is my go to emergency vet. I feel lucky they are so close.
Hi Nicholas,
We’re so grateful for your thoughtful review! We’re glad you’ve had positive experiences with our team and feel confident bringing your pet here. We truly appreciate your trust and support.
Positive experience: Overall, I am very happy with my experience. Good: - I called multiple times after my cats surgery with different concerns, they were very helpful each time - they charged $1,500 total for my cats surgery, but he had a terrible gash in his leg (that even nicked the muscle) so I think this was an understandable price - The doctors and staff were very nice - They took his stitches out for free, and I was in and out in only 30 minutes max for that appointment Bad: - They wouldn't give our cat pain medication until we paid, even though it was a terrible gash - We waited 3 hours at first just to find out they had only given our cat pain medication and nothing else (in their defense they are busy, but that seems a bit much) - One of the lady's was a little snooty with us when we asked about why our cat only had pain medication even though he had been there three hours.
Hi River,
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re glad to hear our team was able to help your cat through his surgery and recovery, and we also appreciate your honesty about the areas where we can do better. Your input is valuable and helps us continue improving the care and service we provide.
Fantastic experience: My dog has cancer and has had very thorough evaluation and treatment. All options have been explained allowing for a thoughtful decision on care.
Hi Marcia,
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re so glad to hear that you felt supported with thorough evaluations and clear explanations throughout your dog’s care. Our team is dedicated to making sure every family has the information they need to make the best decisions, and we truly appreciate your trust in us.
Fantastic experience: Oak Vet was so attentive to my pet. Their veterinarians are knowledgeable and experienced. And even better they care about your pets!
Hi Celeste,
Thank you for your thoughtful review! We’re so glad to hear you felt well cared for and that our team could support you and your pet.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Matthews is Amazing!! After 9 months of being misdiagnosed by the only Fremont IM doctor available, my baby is finally on the road to recovery because of Dr. Matthews’ quick expert evaluation and care plan! Her communications are compassionate, prompt, and thorough! She looks for ways to keep costs down without cutting any corners. Her entire Internal Medicine team at OakVet in Oakland is caring, knowledgeable, and professional. I am grateful I made the drive. I highly recommend her for your pet’s internal medicine needs!!!! Thank you Dr. Matthews! ♥️
Hi Laura,
We’re so happy to hear your little one is finally feeling better after such a long journey. Dr. Matthews and our Internal Medicine team will be touched by your kind words. Thank you for making the drive to see us and for trusting us with your pet’s care—it truly means a lot.
Fantastic experience: I’ve only used one Dr here but Dr Funes is really great. She’s really smart and great at explaining her recommendations without talking down to you. She always tries the least invasive options first but is well prepared to move on to more complicated procedures if they are necessary. Sadly this facility only does emergency and specialty medicine and doesn’t do primary care.
Hi Berkeley Guy,
Thank you so much for your kind words about Dr. Funes! We're glad to hear you felt supported and well-informed during your visit. While we focus on emergency and specialty care, we're always here when you need us.
Fantastic experience: Life savers, very single one of them. We are caring for a dog that stepped on a bee during his morning walk and started going into shock: vomiting, shutting down, listless, pale tongue and gums. I called OakVet and was told to get him there ASAP so drove like all the other Oakland maniacs. Within seconds of parking at OakVet two staff were at the car and whisked him away. It’s as if they were waiting. Within 30 minutes he was much better and we were able to take him home at the end of the day. Today he is still resting but so much better and resuming his snuggly, playful self. I am so grateful to the whole team, from the folks on the phone, the techs, the vets, the folks in the reception area and even billing! Ya all rock!!❤️
Hi Stacey,
We’re so happy to hear your pup is feeling better and back to his playful self. It’s our privilege to be there for pets and their people during emergencies like this. Thank you for trusting us—wishing him continued rest and recovery! ❤️
Fantastic experience: I was visiting the Bay Area last week from New York City and had brought my beloved dog, Zoey, along with me. On the day of our return flight, Zoey suddenly became gravely ill. Although I wasn’t familiar with Oakland, I found my way to OakVet. The team at OakVet acted swiftly and compassionately. They quickly diagnosed Zoey and discovered that something inside her had ruptured. Heartbreakingly, there was nothing that could be done, and I had to make the painful decision to let her go. The staff at OakVet were extraordinary. In one of the most traumatic moments of my life, they showed incredible empathy, professionalism, and care. I am deeply grateful for how they treated both Zoey and me with kindness, intelligence, and grace. I would wholeheartedly recommend OakVet to anyone in need of emergency veterinary care. They helped make an unbearable situation just a little more bearable, and for that, I will always be thankful.
Hi Natalie,
Thank you for sharing such a deeply personal experience. We are truly sorry for your loss of sweet Zoey and honored to have been there for you during such an incredibly difficult time. Our team strives to provide compassionate care, especially in moments like these, and we’re grateful to know we could offer some comfort. Your kind words mean a great deal to all of us—thank you for entrusting us with Zoey’s care.
Fantastic experience: OakVet— From the front desk into the examination rooms, top notch: efficient, caring, and professional. Dr. Funes was so good with our sick dog that he actually did not shake nearly as much as he does elsewhere, and she diagnosed his illness by listening to us, carrying out tests, and staying in touch by email. We are beyond grateful.
Hi Robin,
We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We’re thrilled to hear that you and your pup had such a positive visit with Dr. Funes and our team. Providing compassionate, thorough care is what we strive for, and it means a lot to know we helped make a stressful time a little easier. Thank you for trusting us!
Fantastic experience: We brought our cat Bub in on a Sunday for lethargy and loss of appetite. Within a few hours we saw the doctor and worked out a testing plan. We ended up doing some blood testing and an ultrasound to diagnosis him. The ultrasound tech was super nice for coming in on a Sunday! The staff at OakVet were very helpful, transparent and communicative throughout the whole process. Based on his diagnosis he needed to be hospitalized for a few days but Dr. Shishida and Dr. Funes took great care of him. The staff were great at educating us about what charges to except and what a treatment plan would look like. It was touch and go for a while but we are incredibly grateful to have our beautiful Bubby boy back home. He’s purring up a storm.
Hi Lydia,
Thank you so much for your kind words and for trusting us with Bub’s care! We’re thrilled to hear he’s back home and purring again. Dr. Shishida, Dr. Funes, and the whole team will be so happy to hear this update. Wishing Bub continued healing and lots of snuggles ahead!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Plaff, Dr. Grange, and all of the staff at OakVet are absolutely amazing. I brought my cat Grover in after he suddenly started showing concerning symptoms, and from the moment we arrived, the triage staff and team were patient, kind, and incredibly reassuring during an extremely stressful time. Initially, there was no clear explanation for Grover's symptoms, but Dr. Plaff and her team methodically walked through all possible causes — running blood work, then moving to X-rays, which showed a clear abnormality in his small intestine. Though the on-call ultrasound specialist wasn't available, Dr. Plaff explained everything clearly and compassionately, and said that based on what she saw, she would move forward with emergency surgery if it were her own cat. She even took the time to show us the X-ray and compare it to a healthy one — at 10PM! Her clarity, empathy, and bedside manner made all the difference when we were overwhelmed and scared. At 5AM, we got a call from Dr. Grange (the surgeon) confirming that Dr. Plaff was exactly right — Grover had swallowed a string, which was causing his intestine to bunch up. The surgery went perfectly, and Grover is now recovering well. Throughout the entire process, every person we spoke with at OakVet was kind, responsive, and happy to answer any question I had, no matter how small. I'm so incredibly thankful to have a hospital like this nearby. Their care, professionalism, and compassion meant the world during one of the scariest nights of my life. I couldn't recommend them more.
Hi Greg,
Thank you so much for your incredibly thoughtful review. We're so glad Grover is on the mend and that you felt supported every step of the way. Dr. Plaff, Dr. Grange, and the entire team truly care deeply about the patients we treat and the people who love them. Your kind words mean the world to us — thank you for trusting us during such a difficult time.
Fantastic experience: It was on a Saturday my little elderly and terminally ill kitty stopped eating and I had to call around they picked up immediately and very cordially informed me ahead of time about possible wait (1-3hours). Well organized , clean and friendly personnel and doctors! They are the sweetest ♥️ Although I’ll leave 5 ⭐️ s for this review : certain things I noticed I just wanted to share with everyone. I have PTSD and extremely scared to be in enclosed spaces /where cannot get out without being let out.. If it makes sense.. I wish it was a larger area where there’s an open grass space .. my doggo was “tooting” and he’s an 80lb dude, so I thank people around who were brave and we’re not complaining.. We went out couple of times so I can cry it out feeling “locked in” for almost 3hours was excruciating, but I m so thankful for helping my kitten Lei Lei ❤️
Hi Ludmila,
Thank you so much for your kind words and for trusting us with Lei Lei’s care. We’re truly sorry for the difficult circumstances that brought you to us, and we’re honored to have been there for you both. We also really appreciate you sharing your experience and feedback—your perspective matters deeply to us, and it helps us continue improving how we support all of our clients, especially during such emotional moments. ❤️
Fantastic experience: OakVet saved our fur baby! We rushed our bulldog mix in when he was having a heat stroke. They have an incredible team and gave him top tier care. Thanks to OakVet we were able to bring him home the next morning and he’s doing great. There is no better place to go for specialty care and emergencies, they were also patient in working with us to be cost conscious. We are forever grateful.
Hi Elise,
Thank you for your heartfelt review! We're so glad we could be there for your pup during such a critical moment and that he’s now doing well. Our team is dedicated to providing top-tier care while keeping pet families supported every step of the way. We truly appreciate your trust in us and are grateful to have been able to help. Wishing your bulldog mix continued good health!
Fantastic experience: Oak Vet has been incredible for our family over our several visits in the last year. We have seen Surgery, Internal Medicine, Oncology and Emergency, and everyone cared for our dog and was honest and upfront about any potential challenges which we appreciated. Dr Funes is our favorite - caring, funny and dependable. She has saved our dogs life time and time again, and are so grateful.
Hi Clarissa,
Thank you for your kind words and for trusting OakVet with your dog's care. We’re honored to have been part of your journey and grateful that our team, especially Dr. Funes, could provide the support and expertise your pet needed. Your appreciation means so much to us, and we’re always here for you and your family.
Fantastic experience: Bean was the best little buddy I could have asked for. The staff was very helpful and compassionate during one of the hardest days.
Hi Jennifer,
We are so sorry for your loss. Bean was clearly very special, and we are honored to have been there to support you during such a difficult time. Our team strives to provide compassionate care, and we hope you found some comfort in knowing you were surrounded by people who truly care. Please take care, and know that our thoughts are with you.
Fantastic experience: Our cat Ghost had a lump on a right hind quarter near the tail that grew substantially during the last six months. We took her in for a consultation. OakVet checked her out and provided us with an estimate. Furthermore, they were able to take her that day for surgery. They completed earlier than estimated time. The staff was informative and attentive. I would definitely recommend OakVet to handle your pets needs and care.
Hi Anthony,
Thank you for trusting OakVet with Ghost’s care! We're glad we could provide a smooth experience and timely treatment. Your kind words about our team mean a lot, and we appreciate your recommendation! Wishing Ghost a smooth recovery.
Fantastic experience: Such great people at OakVet, and Dr. Funes is excellent. She walked me through the treatment and lab tests thoroughly, including a page of doctor's notes from our visit. She and the staff were kind and friendly, and and took time cuddling and reassuring my little pug for lab tests and ultrasound. Dr. Funes even responded quickly to emails when she was not at the hospital.
Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear that you had a positive experience with Dr. Funes and our team. Providing thorough care, clear communication, and extra comfort for our patients is always our priority. We appreciate you trusting us with your little pug’s care and are glad we could support you both through the process. Wishing you and your pup all the best!
Positive experience: I used to be a longterm loyal Patient with multiple of my Cats. During the early Covid & Covid Variant time this hospital & its Doctors & staff deserved top honors. Even though having spend 5 figure Amounts for several of my Kittens today i was not given one bit of Credit for having been a loyal patient for such a long time as they denied giving my young kitten the care she desperately needed just because i got recently myself seriously injured which of course has led to financial struggles. Just 2 years ago this did not matter because i always settle what is due….just sometimes this is not possible to pay always a huge Upfront Payment before they even consider to treat your beloved furry Child.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're deeply sorry to hear about the challenges you've faced and understand how difficult it can be when financial struggles impact the care of your beloved pets. Our policies are in place to ensure we can continue to provide the highest level of care to all our patients, but we regret that this has caused you distress. We truly value your loyalty and hope we can find a way to better support you and your pets in the future.
Negative experience: I won’t go into all of the details because the days worth of hell would take me a week to write but I will hit the high points. They performed an emergency surgery on my 18 year old cat with intestinal cancer. He was dehydrated, malnourished and frail when brought in due to experiencing a complete blockage due to his cancer and not eating or drinking for more than 4 days. They released him too early. Instead of keeping him to monitor him for continuous eating and drinking they said he ate half a can of kitten food and called me to pick him up. This was less than 24 hours after surgery. I then had to return 24 hours later after my cat still had not drank, ate or used the bathroom after returning home for them to tell me he now needed a procedure to remove water from his body in order to eat. This procedure was recommended by the previous emergency vet my cat saw days prior and should have been in his file or at the least Oakvet should have suggested this themselves prior to him being discharged. Had they suggested it or had they kept him for the recommended 24-36 hour observation time I would not have occurred another 8k in bills. They released him not showing continuous eating or drinking or letting me know I had the option to request that he stay. I had no idea he hadn’t been eating on a continuous basis and was just happy to bring him home. When I brought him home after surgery he was overly sedated on pain killers. He was scared, banging his cone again his carrier and passed out for more than 20 seconds on the freeway. It was terrifying. When I brought this up to dr. FRANKLE who had not even treated my pet or read his full history profile she said if I didn’t trust her they could unhook him from his IV I could take him home in a blanket. I should be able to request that my pets meds be adjusted or reevaluated. He is MY PET and I know his behavior best. She said many other disturbing things including trying to push a steroid on my cat that she admitted may cause him not to heal and get sepsis… huh?! If she is working when you bring your pet in I would suggest you request another doctor. Those 24 hours after the surgery were some of the worst of my life seeing my best friends life deplete and to find out those hours were completely avoidable was devastating. After bringing him to get the water removal procedure I received a phone call saying due to some diagnostic testing they did they thought there may have complications with the surgery that would cause us to either have another 15k surgery or put him down. This sent me over the edge especially after one of the doctors called back after doing an ultrasound I was not given an estimate for nor refunded, to say they made a mistake and he was actually fine. I shiver to think what would have happened had they not done the ultrasound. Would they have operated on my cat again for no reason? After spending over 23k there in a matter of days I tried to reason with an assistant manager to get some type of refund or discount because had they did their job and kept him to monitor him for continuous eating and drinking for 24-36 hours they would have seen that he in fact was not eating or drinking or using the bathroom and they would have seen that he needed the water removal procedure to eat and I would not have had to return to the ER 24 hours later. No one spoke to me about bowel movements at all and couldn’t answer my questions when I did ask about them. I have yet to be contacted by anyone to discuss this disaster nor discounted in anyway. The high moments were the technicians/nurses, the surgeon etc but there were entirely too many missteps that could have easily cost my pet his life. I spent my life savings to save my best friend and I would do it again but I should NOT have to pay for this places misjudgments and they should be willing to work with me on the financials. He should never have been released especially when I had paid in advance to have him stay for 36 hours.
Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We are deeply sorry to hear about your experience and the distress it caused you and your beloved cat. Our goal is to provide the highest standard of care, and it is clear that we fell short in this instance. We take your concerns very seriously and will review the case thoroughly to understand what went wrong and how we can improve. Your feedback about communication and post-operative care is invaluable, and we will ensure it is addressed with our team. Please know that we are committed to learning from this and making necessary changes to prevent similar situations in the future.
Fantastic experience: My partner and I took our pitbull to OakVet after noticing a concerning skin condition. We were in an out within 10 minutes. Alfonso was our lab tech and he addressed our concerns and questions. Overall, very efficient! We know where to go when we need an emergency pet visit.
Hi Madeline,
Thank you for your kind review! We're glad Alfonso and our team could provide efficient care for your pitbull. We appreciate your trust in us and are here whenever you need us!
Fantastic experience: I had a great experience working with Dr. Funes. My dog had a reaction to a vaccine and developed IMHA. None of the other hospitals really knew what they were talking about with his diagnosis and treatment, which made me feel very uneasy! After working with Dr. Funes over the past few months, she's came up with a treatment plan and really helped me understand what was going on and at ease about his recovery. My dog is in remission and doing very well with her treatment plan. I highly recommend her.
Hi Vivian,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We’re thrilled to hear that your dog is in remission and doing well under Dr. Funes' care. She’s truly dedicated to providing thoughtful and effective treatment plans, and we’re so glad she could help you feel informed and at ease. Your kind words mean a lot to us!
Fantastic experience: We were visiting our family over the holidays with our 9 yr old medium poodle, Cooper. The night before leaving, Cooper developed a painful 'twisted stomach' (common in poodles and great danes) and we realized we needed to immediately contact a 24 hr emergency vet. Little did we know the immediate professional care and loving comfort ALL of us would receive from the wonderful staff and especially Dr. William Jogler! They immediately knew what to do to give relief, and keep us carefully informed of the physical situation as well as options and costs. Most importantly, we were given a special room set up for grieving families to spend as long as needed to have our goodbyes. The doc was an unbelievably knowledgeable, sensitive caring vet, giving us as long as we needed in a special room. We were enabled to have our goodbyes and 'process' with Cooper under pain control, so we could share and give comfort thru our tears. Such a healing bond like no other! Doc told us to buzz him when we were ready for the final dose, taking as long as we needed. One of the most sharing caring difficult times in my life, thank God for the wisdom and genuine loving support from this wonderful OakVet Hospital and Dr. Jogler.
Hi Lindsey,
Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt review. We are truly sorry for the loss of your beloved Cooper and can only imagine how difficult this was for your family. It means so much to hear that Dr. Jogler and our team were able to provide care, compassion, and support during such a challenging time. Please know that our thoughts are with you, and we’re grateful to have been able to help make this difficult experience a little more bearable. Cooper was lucky to have such a loving family.
Fantastic experience: i came in and had to put my cat, callie, down. it was a peaceful process. they leave a button for you to press once you’re ready to say goodbye and for after the procedure. the doctor was so understanding, i was so distraught i forget her name. they also sent a very nice card. it was a wonderful experience that i am forever grateful for, thank you!
Hi Michelle,
We are so sorry for your loss of Callie. Saying goodbye is never easy, and we are honored to have been able to provide a peaceful and compassionate experience for you both. Thank you for your kind words—we truly appreciate it. Wishing you comfort during this difficult time.
Fantastic experience: You never want to have to take your best friend to the emergency vet but when you have to OakVet is a great option. They helped my 13 year old pug after a fall. They were all so kind and caring and took such good care of him.
Hi Chelsea,
Thank you so much for your kind words. We’re glad we could be there for you and your pup during such a stressful time. Our team truly cares about every patient, and it means a lot to hear that you felt supported and well taken care of. Wishing your pup a speedy recovery!
Fantastic experience: After our dog was diagnosed with ITP, we found an internal specialist at a different vet hospital, but then that vet abruptly stopped seeing patients. I’m so glad I chose OakVet to continue Millie’s care. The vet is very knowledgeable and has worked with us carefully to ween Millie off of her medications and now it’s just a matter of waiting to see if she is fully in remission from her autoimmune disease. The office is clean and modern, everyone working there provides great customer service, and the gated parking makes me feel safe.
HI Sherrie,
Thank you for sharing your experience! We're so glad you trusted us with Millie's care and that she's making progress toward remission. Our team is committed to providing compassionate, expert care, and it's wonderful to hear that you felt supported throughout the process. We’re here for you and Millie every step of the way!
Fantastic experience: Our 10-yo dog, who has not had any health issues, experienced anal gland issues at random (infection/blood, constant leakage, needing weekly expressions but never had them done prior, licking and discomfort). Our vet provided 10 days of antibiotics that did not work, then provided us a list of specialists who could offer anal gland removal surgery (anal sacculectomy). We went to Sage in SF for our first consultation where they did an exam, said they could do the surgery to remove both glands as soon as the next day, and quoted us $10-14K. We decided to get a second opinion with OakVet where the team examined her and quickly discovered only one of the glands was having issues and highly recommended we pause on surgery ($5-8K quote). They recommended another round of stronger antibiotics with hydrolyzed (prescription) food to eliminate allergies. We left the clinic in under 45 mins with the food prescription and antibiotics in hand. Within 3 days her leakage and licking stopped. We are two weeks past her appointment date and cancelled her tentatively scheduled surgery. Thank you to the OakVet team for urging us to pause and try a different approach before putting our dog through an unnecessary surgery and spending thousands. I have already recommended this hospital to multiple friends in the last few weeks and will continue utilizing their services in future if needed.
Hi Kennedy,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We’re thrilled to hear that your dog is feeling better and that our team was able to help avoid unnecessary surgery. Providing thoughtful, compassionate care and exploring all options is what we strive for, and it means a lot to know we made a difference for you and your pup. We truly appreciate your trust in us and your kind recommendations—wishing your dog continued good health!
Fantastic experience: They were great, from the vet to the front desk. The nurses were very sweet to my boy. They answered all 1,000 of my questions after surgery. Vet went through my options carefully. It’s a nice facility, with gated parking; it doesn’t feel like an old, bland facility with flat lighting. They seem organized. Overall happy with the service. Will recommend to friends.
Hi TJ,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! We're so glad you had a positive experience with our team and that you felt supported and well-informed throughout the process. We appreciate your recommendation and look forward to being here for you and your boy whenever you need us!
