Experiencia fantástica: I am so grateful to Dr. Cleary and the Avian & Exotic Medicine Center for managing my hedgehog Daphne’s tumor and end of life with such expertise and compassion. He, the nurses, and receptionists were so supportive: organized with intake and scheduling in a clean and well-lit environment, dealing with all my anxious pet parent phone calls and emails, and showing care to me through my ultimate grief. It's huge peace of mind that there's such a credible practice for exotic or rare pets in NYC (had to drive far for Daphne’s prior vet appointments), and I'm confident she left this world with informed care and in good hands. Thank you all.

Experiencia fantástica: The office was clean, the entire staff was friendly and helpful. My appointment started on time. My tortoise pooped in her carrier and they provided everything I needed to clean her up. Dr. Cleary was excellent, so thorough and knowledgeable with my baby. He answered all of my questions and made thorough recommendations. X-rays were fast and affordable, and I was impressed that they send blood work to an exotics-only lab. The next steps for my torts care are clear, and overall everything was quite affordable. Exam, bloodwork, x-rays, and nail trim for about $500, which is unfortunately cheap these days especially for exotic care. Animal medical center the exam alone is nearly $400 for example. The office sent me the medical record from my visit right away, and the records were just as thorough as the visit. They also offer free uvb bulb testing!! Overall 5 star experience, I def found the primary care for my tort and any other exotic pets I may end up caring for in the future.

Experiencia negativa: My chicken was having respiratory issues, I assumed she could get help here but when I called and explained what was going on the woman on the phone seemed irritated and quickly told me “NO” as if my chicken isn’t an Avian exotic animal… I had to take her to the Schwarzman Animal Medicine ER and she received the care that she needed there no attitude needed. At the Schwartzman, we were given a crate for free and they discounted $250 off of the visit.

Experiencia fantástica: Always get the prices up front. The bill can be truly shocking! Highly reccomended if you have a bird or exotic pet. They will stress the importance of habitat for the health of your pet and help with that as well as take great care of medical needs. An invaluable practice for our pets!!!

Experiencia fantástica: I’m so grateful for this clinic and their staff. I was able to get a same-day emergency appointment for my cockatiel, Pepper, and she ended up needing surgery. The surgery went well, and everyone was incredibly kind throughout the entire process. I had several questions, and the staff took the time to answer all of them patiently. After surgery, Pepper needed extra care because the incision was near her vent, and they were so helpful in showing me exactly how to clean and care for her properly at home. Every staff member I interacted with was compassionate, professional, and truly caring. I highly recommend this clinic and am so thankful for the care they gave Pepper.

Experiencia fantástica: My bunny Gabrielle had her cauliflower ear checked and yearly bloodwork done 01/04/26. I was completely at ease during this visit knowing she is in the best of hands. This is the best exotic vet hospital. Staff is great and bunny leaves completely calm.

Experiencia fantástica: London (my male rabbit) and I love Avian and Exotic Medicine! The staff is super friendly and the doctors are fantastic. I have brought both in over the last 13 years for multiple issues and all have been solved. Notably, London was sick with snuffles that would not go away when he was a baby! Dr. Wilson and I communicated about multiple solutions to help him, and finally we were able to cure him of it. Not only did she respond quickly to calls, but e-mails as well. I know this isn't always the case with bunnies, and their health is very fragile at times, but the thorough care has prevented further problems with my lovely bunny boy. Currently, Dr. Halasz and Dr. Cleary have both come up with excellent current solutions to help my now elderly rabbit. He now gets treated regularly for his arthritis and joint pain. I have definitely noticed a difference in his affect overall as he seems more active. I would highly recommend CAEM to anyone in NYC who wants excellent care for their exotic pets.

Experiencia fantástica: I took max for emergency and they help me. I am really greatful and thankful. The teams was cheering for max health we had ups and down with max. And still having hopes for him to recover fully. He is eating by himself and going to pee pads by himself little steps but doing good. I really recommend . They are very respectful and kind . Experiencia fantástica: This Practice has come through for me so many times, and on such short notice, that I cannot recommend them enough. I keep a lot of obscure and less common colubrid snakes, where Doctor Cleary is always able to assess the situation & provide solutions that are all-encompassing, easy to follow, and practical. More than anything else, I trust that my pets are being cared for by the best out there, which I think we can all agree is a feeling seldomly shared when it comes to exotic vets.

Experiencia fantástica: I went with my daughter to take her crescent gecko Kaname there as an emergency visit. Everyone there was so nice and accommodating. Kaname saw Dr Halasz she took excellent care of Kaname and did test my daughter asked for to reassure her that Kaname was perfectly ok. My daughter loves her Kaname she has had Kaname since she was a baby and takes excellent care of her like that's her baby. My daughter went in sad thinking she was gonna lose Kaname but left happy knowing Kaname was gonna be perfectly ok. Thank you Dr Halasz and your wonderful staff for all you do. You made my daughter's Christmas even better knowing her baby will be ok.

Experiencia fantástica: They were able to squeeze us in for an emergency appointment when our crested gecko wasn’t feeling too well. We’re so glad we came here, everyone from the receptionists to the doctors to the technicians were welcoming and friendly. They immediately made us feel like our pet was in good hands and eased our concerns about his health. They took time to answer our questions and tell us what we could do to help him feel better. They called us the next day to check on him and answered a follow up question we had via email a few days later. We can’t recommend Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine enough!

Experiencia fantástica: If there’s a place out there that takes better care of your pet, no it doesn’t. We boarded our four year and 11 month old GCC for a week and not only did she come back happy and healthy, she may have returned even cuter. When it comes to a beloved pet, there’s no price to pay for peace of mind, but at the Center for Avian & Exotic Medicine, you’re getting your money’s worth.

Experiencia fantástica: Has helped find a solution for one of babies ear she has started to self mutilate her ear and I was sad seeing her in pain but I took her in after a few appointments we found a solution for now which has definitely helped her anxiety and itchyness . The prices aren’t bad as well and for being the only exotic animal vet in New York it’s cute!

Experiencia fantástica: I enjoy the atmosphere, the people, and their beloved pets at Avian and Exotics. The staff is wonderful and the patients are fascinating. Where else can you see Flemish Giant bunnies, all kinds of birds/parrots, mice and hamsters. My Rose Breasted Cockatoo Marni always feels better after a visit with Dr. Cleary and so do I. When someone so clearly loves what they do the way Dr. Cleary does - it’s heartwarming. I’m grateful to have this wonderful place to bring my birds.

Experiencia fantástica: I love this vet office; everyone I encounter is a true professional who really cares about doing right by the client, ie animal. My rabbit Pretzel, who is universally known for her poor attitude and ongoing health issues, has been treated with the most intentional care and respect by all at CAEM. They have saved her life during a liver lover torsion, helped with eye infections, ongoing jaw issues, and more. They even threw her a birthday party and sent along with pictures when I had to board her during her special day. I am so glad that this resource exists for exotic pet owners and our tiny family members. Thank you CAEM! Here’s a picture of Pretzel!

Experiencia fantástica: I’m so happy I brought my baby bearded dragon here. I really appreciate how kind the doctor, staff, and nurse were to both me and Yoshi. They were very thorough, always explained why they were doing something, and even helped me with my first syringe feeding when I explained that I was nervous to do that on my own. It was a relief to know that Yoshi ate something before I brought him back home to recover. I will be bringing him here regularly.

Experiencia fantástica: Had my first visit last week and was happy with how kind and professional everyone was. I got a new rabbit owner folder with information and treats/toys. The vet seemed to really enjoy my rabbit and treated him quickly and was patient with how wiggly he can be. The office is super responsive via email and so far I've had a great experience there! Update: So we've been clients for a few years now and I'm blown away by the staff here, especially our doctor, Dr. Halasz. Yes, the pricing is expensive - but this is normal for exotic vets and certainly is cheaper than AMC. Also, what really makes me love everyone here is that they remember my rabbit even when they're only seeing him for check ups or a rare issue. It's very clear staff like and remember him and want to do well by him. Owning an exotic pet can be stressful, I certainly wish there were more vet offices around the city but I am grateful for CAEM and will continue going, as they're always trying to fit us in and care about our boy almost as much as we do.

Experiencia negativa: If I could give zero stars, I would. I found this place online because it was the only vet in NYC that had availability for a turtle. I called and was told I needed to submit a form and a deposit before even securing an appointment. Fine—I did exactly that, and they charged me. But did anyone follow up? Nope. No call, no email, nothing. I called again because I was desperate to get my turtle seen. The woman on the phone said she’d call back to confirm. No call back. Had to call yet again just to finally secure an appointment. When I arrived, the front desk staff acted like they had no idea who I was or that I even had an appointment. After some confusion, I was finally seen by Dr. Lyle Clearly, who immediately had a judgmental tone when I mentioned how I got my turtle. I ignored his attitude because I just needed help. He said my turtle needed X-rays and blood work and told me to get an estimate from the front desk. Guess what? The front desk had no idea about any estimate. Only after I told them what the vet said did they finally pull up a price, which turned out to be WAY higher than expected. It wasn’t just for X-rays and blood work—there were extra charges. When I simply asked what they were, the receptionist caught an attitude as if I was wrong for asking. Then, they sent me back to the vet when I asked about alternative options. He flat-out said no and suggested I apply for CareCredit. I went back to the front desk for help with this, and they acted bothered again. I got pre-approved, handed the receptionist my phone, and suddenly got a message saying I was no longer approved—sketchy and weird. Frustrated, I just paid with my credit card, hoping to finally get real care for my pet. Nope. After everything, I was just told what to feed my turtle and to get a better light. No aftercare instructions. Nothing helpful. To make matters worse, the vet mentioned seeing eggs in the X-ray. The next day, my turtle laid them. I immediately called and emailed for guidance. They said the vet would get back to me. He finally did—only to say he was STILL unsure what was wrong and that I needed to come back in. I asked for clear options, instructions, and cost estimates. Instead of answers, I got nothing but repeated suggestions to go to a different vet. I then requested details on what was already done to my turtle and decided to cancel the check-up due to the lack of communication and trust. No response. I called the front desk to cancel and still try to talk to the vet. The receptionist rudely said it was canceled and hung up on me. When I called back, a different woman literally screamed, “AHHHHHH WHATEVERRRR” into the phone before hanging up. I called back again—no answer. This place is an absolute joke. They don’t care about your pet, just your money. Avoid at all costs! Update: June 2nd she passed away

The other one happened so quickly that I don't want to miss anything. They won't see us for another three days! "Oh, we don't do walk-ins". My beloved animal could be dying. Not the place for us!

Experiencia negativa: I writing this out of my last 2 experiences with this place, before the last two experiences i would have given it 5 starts hands down, i was disappointed in the staff and pricing My experience this last time was horrible, it started with me calling in to get a necessary beak trim that was necessary( my bird was having a hard time eating anything ) i was told since its been a while i have been in there i would need to have a wellness check , one staff member told me it would be $160 and the beak trim would be $40 i was told around $200 even, i called back another time to confirm my appointment and to check to be sure taxes were included in the price , i was told another staff member it would be $201.47. With tax. The day off of the appointment i was taken care of right away , the wellness check to make sure the feathers , stomach eyes and ears were good everything was good perfect. I was recommended to trim the beak and nails (an additional $45) , i politely said i really couldn't get the nails done, and just wanted get the beak trim, the trim i was told it would take 10 mins and i could wait in the room or step out . I waited in the room for 10 minutes i stepped out for 2 minutes then walk back in the room, another 3 mins later i hear two technicians talk about how sometimes things with the shaving tool and things happen i could only think they were talking about my bird, i keep my cool because i'm not 100 percent sure. I walk out of the room and into the main area where i was asked for money yet my bird is no where to be found and now told i would haft to pay an additional $4 plus an extra $ 3 for using a credit card,, my total went rom $190, to $201.47 to $206.87. At this point its been 25 mins no bird and i was charged more than i was originally quoted , its been 35 mins , i was told that they would do a complementary nail trim, something that I wasn't t presented with earlier unless i paid seemed a bit suspicious. its been about 45 mins my bird comes out and i"m finally told what i thought and from the technician trimming my birds beak it some how started bleeding. My bird has been there multiple times and his beak never bled and the nails they did once ,every other time i did his nails myself. So to recap staff did not know there own pricing , my bird needed nails trimmed because they were to long but unless i payed they would just stay long i was over priced and charged fees i was never told about, and didn't know my birds situation of bleeding until after i payed. Id love to visit again (its one of the closest places in the city( and have a better experience but it has gotten worse every time since the last so much so i'm willing to travel to another state to have my bird treated.

Experiencia fantástica: From day one, this facility gave me a great sense of caring for the creatures (and humans) that walk thru the door. Attention to detail, technique, examination protocol, "patient" intake & registration,- I have not seen better! I love my turtles enough to travel from Bklyn to Manhattan because I know we will receive the care needed at The Center. The staff (Doctors, Boarding Residents, Reception staff) are ALL on point. Experiencia negativa: We’re a customer of this practice since 2016 and we’re bringing our rabbit for regular check-ups and an infection last 5 months. Not only they don’t share the results of the culture/test they did back in March and they keep prescribing antibiotic medication endlessly to a 10 year-old rabbit, today when we asked about a refill front office staff rejected answering our questions and addressing our concerns, then hot the business card on the counter and told us to “call manager in 20 minutes, we’re not going to do anything now” in a rude tone. Only after we attempted to leave and my wife told them that they’re not treating a loyal client nicely and trying to resolve the matter and only keeping recharging us for endless medication while they don’t even know the name of our specialist who’s prescribing the medication without and resolution or explanation, they changed their minds and attitude, starting to listening to her and being helpful all of a sudden. Rude practice and they don’t care much about the follow ups and communications. After 10 years, we will change our veterinary for our rabbit.

Experiencia fantástica: I've been bringing my two parrots here for the last 2 years, and now my lizard. The vets here are extremely caring of the animals, at least my vets are. So far, I have had no negative experiences here whatsoever, and I think they charge fairly for an exotics vet, which will always be more expensive. Definitely recommend.

Experiencia fantástica: I went up here for the very first time today after having been disappointed by the medical knowledge of my previous vet when it came to birds. Indeed it was his repeated misdiagnoses that led me on a search for an expert, and I found one here, Alexandra Halasz. I brought my bird, Rico in for a consult that would have raised the ire of many a less professional vet. As someone who works in human medicine I brought my friend who owns the practice I work in with me, on face time. This was not done to challenge the vet just so we could better understand the intricacies of avian medicine together. Rico was treated exceptionally well, our concerns listened to and addressed and I am happy to say he started eating again soon after I returned home (following some fluid and B complex injections) Can I say I love this place, it's a bit of a hike but worth it. It is spotless and inviting and everyone is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Once Rico gets his full strength back he will be back for his surgery and I feel he is in very capable hands. Oh and the prices are very reasonable too. Highly recommended!

Experiencia fantástica: We love Dr. Cleary and the staff so much! They gave us an emergency appointment when our sweet parakeet Popcorn became very ill and Dr. Cleary was quick and knowledgeable and saved our girl. He made sure to advise us of our options and never ever pushes us to overspend on extra tests. This place is transparent and honest. While it may seem a bit more than you would expect to pay, I can assure you that you are getting quality, expertise and honesty as well as the best possible care. We are totally confident in the advice and care we receive here. We highly recommend them for your birds and bunnies.

Experiencia negativa: My bunny died after week of visiting for an Annual checkup. Also, I Paid $2k for them to not give me a call back about my results for my other bunny. No paperwork or anything upon requests. Like I just threw it in in the air at them with nothing to show for it. UPDATE: Yes, it’s been over a year since you have seen me. Not sure how that changes the fact that I never received any paperwork for my bunny’s results and why my other bunny died right after staying the night with you for an annual.

Experiencia fantástica: First time taking my iguana there and had the best experience! Our doctor was so knowledgeable and patient with our questions. Definitely felt more comfortable here than in my previous vet. I’m so happy I found this place.

Experiencia fantástica: Thank you to the staff for a great visit, especially Dr. Halasz. She was kind, patient, empathetic, and very gentle with my hamster BB, who means so much to me. She answered all my questions, gave me advice, and recommended the best medications to help my BB. After a week on his medicine, he finally had the strength to go back on his wheel and seemed more energetic. It's been over a month now, and he is back to normal, and it's all thanks to the amazing staff from the receptionist to the assistants to the doctors. Thank you very much.

Experiencia fantástica: I brought my ferret in for some bumps on his back and was so impressed with the care. The staff was fast, friendly, and really knowledgeable. They made me feel comfortable right away and my ferret was clearly in good hands. I’m so grateful for how well they treated us and highly recommend them for anyone with an exotic pet.

Experiencia fantástica: My bird had issues with egg laying and a prolapsed cloacea. The animal medical center said that i should consider euthanasia if she did not lay her eggs in 48 hrs. I brought her here for a second opinion and they said that she was not at the point of euthanasia. They were able to remove 2 eggs and send her home with meds. This is her when i brought her home! The staff was great and the vets were caring and amazing at what they do!

Experiencia positiva: They are very organized and conscientious of covid in this office. They are also really efficient, but this past time I thought they could have been better communicators. I bring my rabbit in regularly to get nail trims as I am unable to do it alone. At her most recent appointment, they told me after my rabbit was dropped off that the price was increased by $15. Obviously I was going to pay the price because I already travelled so far to get there and we were already checked in. Someone should have notified me before the appointment or when I scheduled the appointment. I felt a little cheated by the timing of the price change communication. I do appreciate the commitment to quality care and that the space is always clean and welcoming. When I had a dental issue with my rabbit, they were very professional at handling the rabbit, providing me with all the information I needed, and explaining all possible outcomes and side effects. I was able to make a very informed decision from there and I will keep bringing my rabbits for this reason

Experiencia fantástica: Doctor was so kind and understanding. My snake was obviously very stressed in the new environment and being examined, usually she strikes at strangers. But the doctor had such a calming presence she didn’t try to bite once, and only hissed a little bit. We were seen almost immediately and the office was very clean and efficient. 11/10! Bring your animals here!

Experiencia fantástica: I was a client of the Center for years while they took care of my chameleon. I used them for both their vet and their boarding services and they took wonderful care of my pet every time. I recently had to say goodbye to my little girl and they were wonderful and kind during the whole process. They're amazing and I recommend anybody with an exotic pet to use their services.

Experiencia negativa: Mostly awful, would not recommend. They make passive aggressive responses to suffering pet owners online and in person. As you will see in other reviews, responses to complaints of poor care are met with, “Thank you very much” … sociopathic level stuff right there.

Experiencia fantástica: If it weren’t for this place both of our darling bunnies very well may have died from LLT. Of course it’s takes a team of loving talented, and professional doctors and staff, but Dr. Lyle Cleary is the one who saved both Lilikoi and Maui from almost certain death. We can’t thank him enough for his attention to detail and thoughtfulness when it comes to caring for the ones we love most. Nicole at the front desk also deserves every compliment she gets for her knowledge, expertise, and invaluable advice when it comes to everything lagomorphs ;)

Experiencia fantástica: Recent visit for our Russian tortoise. It was an insightful, comprehensive visit. The vet shared many best practices in terms of nutrition, living space, etc. to ensure our tortoise has an optimal life. We would highly recommend Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine.

Experiencia fantástica: Our conure was so well cared for when boarding for a week. The staff really engaged with our bird, above and beyond feeding to include playing, dancing , bathing, putting on music! We can now go away with piece of mind, knowing our bird is in good hands and also getting to know other trusted humans and even engage with other bird "friends"! We cannot say enough good things about the team and care.

Experiencia negativa: Unprofessional, Inhumane, and Deceptive: Avoid Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine at All Costs. I'm still reeling from the appalling treatment I received from the Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine on February 14, 2025. Despite confirming an appointment and paying a deposit online for 159.37 the day before, I was callously turned away due to a "first come, first serve" policy - a policy they deliberately withheld. The receptionist's flimsy excuse about "avian flu concerns" was an egregious lie, especially after they initially reassured me that they regularly treat starlings. This blatant dishonesty is unacceptable. But what's even more shocking is the receptionist's vicious verbal assault when I expressed my frustration. I told her that it was "disgusting" to treat me this way, and in response, she hurled the same insult back at me, telling me I was "disgusting" and ordering me to "get out." Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine demonstrated a staggering lack of empathy, transparency, and basic human decency. Their actions were not only unprofessional but also cruel and inhumane. If you care about your pets and your own well-being, stay far, far away from Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine. They do not deserve your trust or your business.

Experiencia negativa: I've visited this location about twice for my bearded dragon, and unfortunately, it seems more focused on increasing the bill than providing helpful guidance to prevent future visits. I never got the impression that they genuinely cared about my pet, which is disappointing. The doctor's advice is minimal and often comes across as patronizing.

They are quick and efficient, and the price is reasonable. There was a mix up when we took her there to board: they had no space because they were renovating. Melissa took care of it and found a way to make it possible. Extraordinary service for their clients!

Experiencia fantástica: Incredibly impressed by Dr. Cleary's beside manner with my ailing aquatic turtle! He cleaned up his shell as he grilled me on my care practices (I think I deserve a solid B+) and Speedy is already showing signs of recovery. The font desk booked me immediately, He also told me his oldest "patient" of this species is 64 -- which means I must revise my will because I am thinking the my turtle will definitely outlive me!

Experiencia negativa: Center for Avian and Exotic Pets, I’m writing today as a loyal customer of several years who has relied on your services both as veterinarians and as a boarding facility. In the past, our experiences with boarding have been largely ok- though never sharing photos as promised is always a bit concerning. However, our most recent experience was disappointing and genuinely worrying. I’m certainly aware that birds prefer to be in their home environment, but our beloved pets came home in a less-than-ideal state, and we felt compelled to share. One of our birds came home with what appeared to be an injury to his leg. Though it appears quite minor, he was fine before we left him, and I cannot help but think the cage size or play expectations might have contributed. Even pet birds need to fly and play, and the tight quarters with a high energy bird feel unnecessarily hard on them- especially since they need exercise and a comfortable temporary home. However, we understand that minor injuries can happen and in isolation we’d likely have never been overly concerned. The biggest concern is the older bird who has boarded several times with you. She came home disheveled, with feces all over her, unpreened, and has been extremely agitated and uncomfortable for days. In her 3 years with us, she has never been any of these things. We understand that boarding can be stressful, and birds cannot always be monitored, but her health and emotional state seems to have noticeably suffered. When we called, we were told they were happy, healthy, and playing. Since we’ve gotten them home, they’ve mostly seemed like they just needed to recover. Again, we’ve been satisfied clients for several years, so the experience caught us completely off-guard. For future stays, we will take responsibility for specifying cage parameters since we feel like the size was a major factor in their decline. When we were told they would have a large cage, we took it at face value rather than requesting measurements. As a premium facility, we had premium expectations beyond what we saw. I write today only in hopes that this was a one-off experience, and that future stays are inline with what clients expect from specialists such as yourself.

Experiencia negativa: Last December 23rd my green cheek conure was suddenly ill and they wouldn’t see her. I took her too AMC which I dreaded and they sent us home after 4 hours of waiting with a pain sedative. She was dead the next day. several months prior I spent over $3,000 at CAEM and one would think they would have seen my little one immediately. I still think she would have lived if we didn’t wait so long and misdiagnosed. Needless to say, it’s the only exotic pet service in Manhattan and they know it. Won’t be getting any more birds until I leave town for sure.

Experiencia negativa: My Green Cheeked Conure died in this facility!!! The same day we had her have the annual check (with perfect results) we boarded her. After four days of boarding we received a call that my green cheeked was not feeling well, a few hours later we received another call informing us that my baby passed away. It was a tremendous shock; we have had her for nine years, moreover during those nine beautiful years she never got sick, she always was active, loved vegetables and fruits and crazy baths. During that phone call with the vet all we could hear from her was the cost of the next steps to be taken with hear small body. No reasons for her passing, no empathy, nothing! I loved my little baby and they took her away from us!

Experiencia fantástica: A most satisfying visit! All went well smooth as silk. Reception crew were gracious and professional - Truth! I brought my African Grey in for exam and trimmings! Very, very impressed with the handling - certainly professional! I had a great conversation with one of the staff - Ali? - regarding boarding and was impressed with the exchange. Experiencia positiva: Can't really evaluate the center, as I brought in a green anole lizard and I understand that this kind of animal is very small and difficult to treat. Rexie, the anole, died today, 4 days after the visit. The follow up calls from the staff were nice. I feel that the doctor could have given me a little more directions on what to do: like for example try to give him some juice instead of water, try to soak him to make him more hydrated etc etc/ Only direction I received was to isolate him , which made him really sad and grey. He managed to escape the isolating box (the box was inside the tank) and immediately became green in the tank, so I left him there. He died while all green, so at least I hope he was comfortable.

Experiencia fantástica: I have two lovebirds who are only seen at this center. I have been coming over the past 4 years for annual check-ups, nail trims, and any other issues as they arise. I trust the staff fully, they are always kind, accommodating, and they truly care for the animals in their care. I appreciate how the rare instances I've needed to come in on a holiday, they are actually open and I know it's a sacrifice away from their personal lives. I also appreciate how important it is to have vets that know birds really well, I feel incredibly lucky to live near by. Highly recommend!

Experiencia fantástica: Dr. Cleary is by far the best veterinarian in the tri-state area for our rescue rabbit. We travel from Bergen County New Jersey to be in his care. He is patient, professional and treats Charlotte like she was his own. Dental check ups are important and surgeries are necessary sometimes. While stressful as a pet parent, I am always put at ease by all staff when we arrive and communication from the care team throughout the visit is appreciated. Dr.Cleary follows up with calls to check in on recovery at home. Thank you for all you do. Diane S.

Experiencia fantástica: Dr. Halasz was absolutely wonderful, I brought in my sick cockatiel which was having trouble breathing and did not like to be handled. she was so gentle and caring with our Thomas. She knew exactly what was wrong and acted quickly to help our feather baby. I am glad to say by the next day our Thomas was doing much better. Setting our appointment was easy and the staff was also very friendly.

Experiencia fantástica: I can't say enough good things about this practice. Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine took care of my family's chinchilla for the last year as he experienced chronic dental and oral problems. The doctors, nurses, staff, and practice manager were always professional, attentive, compassionate, and honest about treatments and their limitations. I would recommend this practice and those of its parent company to the owners of exotic pets and will continue to visit them for all of my family's pets.

Experiencia negativa: Heartbreaking experience with them. I brought my beloved cockatiel in for a few days boarding and an annual exam. They called me a few hours later to tell me he had a heart attack while they were drawing blood, without much other information other than that "it's rare, but it happens." I went up the next day to retrieve his body, which an employee handed to me wrapped in what seemed a paper towel lined with plastic and taped shut. And the employee basically just said "here" before she disappeared again into the back. The only employee who even engaged with me on a human level was one of the front desk staff, who talked about what a wonderful bird my cockatiel was for a while before it became evident she was talking about a completely different bird. (But she was also the only employee to offer me some time in the "comfort room" after I started crying.) No follow up at all from the vet to see how we were doing afterward, no communications at all since that awful moment. If I ever have another companion bird, I will certainly not be using this vet.

I got an appointment scheduled and they wouldn’t refund me what I had to pay after my pet literally passed away more than one week in advance. Do better as proffesionals and people, this is literally disgusting. Specially the front desk lady that showed literally to not care about anything but the money. Deeply saddened by all this.

Experiencia fantástica: Many thanks to Dr. Cleary and Nicole for taking care of our parrot. We were originally visiting NYC to get medical care for my husband. The night before (a Sunday), our bird developed an eye infection. When no one else from Cleveland to Ithaca would help, CAEM came to the rescue and agreed to treat and watch our bird on short notice. All of the staff here were so compassionate and accommodating during a very stressful time for us. The medical care was excellent and the prices were great, too. The same treatment in WNY typically costs us four times the amount CAEM charges. Thank you again.

Experiencia fantástica: My mother asked me to write a review since she loves this place so much. The receptionists are so nice and the vets are responsive (we've emailed updates and get responses from the vets) and always treat my mother's piggies the best. When one of her guinea pigs passed suddenly, they gave my mom condolences. My mother even got a new piggie from one of the receptionists who had a litter. We send pictures and she always takes special care whenever he goes in for a check up.

Routine exams and tests, nail trims, acute care after night frights, X-rays under sedation, everything has been handled so well and was reasonably priced. Appointments start on time, and the receptionists are helpful and responsive. I feel very fortunate to have this office in the city.

From the very start, CAEEM has provided exceptional, specialized care for all five of my guinea pigs, ensuring each one received the best quality of life despite their varying health issues. The team at CAEEM has consistently demonstrated their expertise and compassion, thoroughly assessing each pet's unique needs and providing clear, well-considered treatment options. They carefully weighed factors like financial considerations, timing, and the most humane approaches. This field is not easy. As a medical professional myself, I can tell they put in all their efforts for every patient. Their dedication was especially evident with Charlie, our senior guinea pig. When Charlie needed surgery for cancer, the medical team gave us clear instructions and monitored her condition meticulously. Thanks to their expert care, Charlie is now thriving and enjoying a good quality of life, tumor free and healthy. I will also mention, that CAEEM took manners in their own hands and saved Charlie's life from a rescue because she was sick and needed medical attention. We happily adopted her after she made a full recovery and are so thankful and blessed to have her in our lives. There were moments where my pets were not able to tolerate life saving interventions, sometimes we cannot cheat the course of nature. When it came time to say goodbye to Latte, CAEEM went above and beyond by offering us additional time to visit her while she was in critical care. They also provided a private family room, which was a crucial and supportive space for us during her final moments, allowing for a respectful and heartfelt farewell. The biggest shoutout I have to give is that the staff lead every conversation with welcoming compassion for all my pets that have come by. They are emotionally present and ready to offer medical and coping support when we needed the guidance. I’ve interacted with almost every doctor and surgeon at the practice over the years. The practice manager, Mo, was particularly kind and passionately involved, especially during Charlie’s recent surgery. Thank you to Dr. Renna, Dr. Halasz. Dr. Wilson, nurses, vet techs, Nicole, and front desk for being so good to us this year, which was especially challenging. Every question and concern I ever had did not go unanswered. I am deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided to Cha cha, Mu, Mocha, Latte, and Charlie during our time here. CAEEM has my highest recommendation for anyone seeking top-notch care for their exotic pets.

Experiencia fantástica: No one has a review for an hedgehog so I'll be the first! The doctor was really friendly and nice, got some really helpful explanation. My hedgie was treated very gently (I visited for a regular checkup). The checkup costed about $160. (it is indeed expensive but I have a pet insurance so) I was actually very worried before visiting as this center was the only option as a hedgie owner (there's one in long island which is like 2 hours away), but I would definitely recommend! Will definitely visit again.

Experiencia negativa: Please don’t come here. I brought my guinea pig here in an emergency as my guinea pig developed a cold. They pressured me into doing unlimited tests, and told me that my guinea pig had a cold. Which I already knew from the beginning. They had me pay for the medication and then told me they actually don’t have one of the medications so I’ll have to get it shipped to me. I did over night shipping ($70), as I was desperate to get the medication for my guinea pig. My guinea pig died that very same day. I wish I could get my money back and I wish I went to a different vet who could actually help. I spent $743

Experiencia negativa: I had an extremely frustrating experience with this vet clinic. I reached out to them because they are supposedly well-known for their service, but my experience was anything but positive. I contacted them with a simple, urgent question and received no helpful response. Despite calling well before their closing time, they outright refused to assist me. At 7:01 PM, just one minute past their closing time, they rudely stated, "we close at 7 and now it is 7:01, we are CLOSED," without any regard for the urgency of my situation. Their lack of professionalism and empathy is appalling. I was left feeling ignored and undervalued as a client. This kind of service is completely unacceptable, especially when dealing with the health and well-being of pets. I expected much better from a place with such a reputation. I will be taking my business elsewhere and do not recommend this clinic to anyone looking for reliable and compassionate veterinary care. Avoid this place if you value timely and respectful service.

Experiencia negativa: So I took my sick animal to this hospital. To make a long story short, I spent over 2K for tests and medications and in the end my best friend was dead. DO NOT bring your sick pets there. The staff at the front desk are immature and constantly converse amongst themselves without any sense of professionalism. The doctors string along a game plan that when looked at in hindsight is flimsy and shoddy at best. You have expectations when bringing your sick animal to a exotic specialist that they truly know and have a grasp on what they are doing. Think again when bringing your loving pet to this money hungry business. At this point, I am looking at litigation not just for monies spent but for the deep pain and suffering from losing significant part of your life due to mediocre doctors trying to pad their multi million dollar bank accounts. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS MONEY PIT. So the Avian hospital replied to my comment by saying that they take this situation very seriously BUT if you look at the one star reviews of this so called business, you will notice that they do the opposite. They try some sort of damage control and continue their ignorant self serving ways at the expense of your loved one, your treasure, your pet.

Experiencia negativa: So i just called in because i have a lizard that is possibly egg bound and they are not willing to help to just do an xray or a ultrasound. Time is of the essense here. I have had thesame situation with my previous animal, that i have told them that could be possibly eggbound, then they have to schedule and will not even understand the situation. They are ignorant with “eggbound” and does not consider it as an emergency. That said animal have passed away because they refuse to see it. I dont know if they are legit exotic animal vet if they dont cate to see an animal that is potentially eggbound. You have a very small window to make it right and they care more on their schhedule than the well being off the animals. The person i spoke with me just now was not even willing to listen to me but tries to push me away instead of hearing the situation. It doesn’t take an hour to do an ultrasound or an xray.

Experiencia negativa: My rabbit died here. Caitlin Renna encouraged us to do an expensive CT scan and told us it was minimal risk. But my baby died during sedation. She refused to take any responsibility. She used a lot of medicine for sedation which I don’t think it was necessary for sedation. Don’t Come. I collected more information from other pet owners . A lot of pet died here.

Experiencia negativa: I have brought my pet rats here twice, both times for routine surgeries. Both times, our pets came back either with major complications or didn’t come back at all. It’s a tragedy that there isn’t a single other exotic vet clinic in nyc. It’s an even deeper tragedy that the only available exotic vet clinic is as incompetent as this one is. If you make the mistake of bringing your pet here, you should fully expect that incompetence to follow you and your pet from the front desk to the operating room. If you’re in nyc and have an exotic pet in your care, you should strongly consider other options in Long Island, New Jersey, or elsewhere. The inconvenience and expense of the drive is much easier than a call from a vet here telling you that the once vivacious pet you had 12 hours ago is no longer with us.

Experiencia negativa: Dr. Lyle Cleary had the job to vaccinate my pet back in April 2024. Cleary was rude, brushing off my questions. He also administered two vaccines on my dog, knowing she was under the recommended weight for multiple vaccines at the same time. This caused my dog to get a bad reaction to the vaccines (swollen eyes, discomfort in her buttock and stomach area, twitching, fidgety, restless). On top of that, he failed to put the vaccinations on her medical records, leaving it to indicate that she needs to get the same vaccine again. I called many people to try to get this resolved, and nothing worked as Clearly denied this wrongdoing. Cleary was sloppy, careless, and not affectionate towards my pet. He gave me an awful experience that I had to deal with weeks after my pet got vaccinated. I want to report him to the board, but I cannot find a way to do that. Is he even a legitimate veterinarian? Licence number: 01444401. According to the clinic, Vetco, he was working per diem this day. Help me report him. Do not let this "vet" touch your pet.

Experiencia negativa: Don't waste your time coming here. I went with a pair of injured birds, paid in full, and left. 9 months later, they thank me for a new visit (I no longer live in NY, and havent been back in half a year) and tried to invent an additional treatment that was administered. Someone 'remembered' my bird got an extra shot, trust us, and they wanted another fifty bucks. Despite the fact that all was paid the same day, to the tune of 1300 dollars. Sounds like a scam, to me. Avoid these people at all costs.

Experiencia fantástica: This is such a wonderful place for the family of a bird. We traveled out of state to get here. It's that good. The quality of the staff is beyond dispute, but the overall experience you have knowing your family member is being cared for by those that understand and celebrate bird families is priceless. I am thrilled the place still exists as we were last seen in 2007, so it's wonderful to be a client again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Experiencia negativa: My parrot died. I had had a carbon monoxide scare, so I took the bird for an autopsy to see if carbon monoxide had killed him. They assured me if true, they would find out in the autopsy. Almost $400. Then another $400 to send away the lab samples. Finally, they let me know that it's difficult to determine death in the case of carbon monoxide poisoning. Why didn't they tell me that in the beginning? Then they tried to charge me for cremation. These people took advantage of me while I was grieving my beloved parrot. I would never again go to these schemers. I'm still hurting and out of nearly $800.

Experiencia negativa: I loved this place previously. Took my baby (GCC conure) for his very first vet visit and everyone was wonderful. Their nail trim was $20 before. Went there today and got his nail trimmed and I got charged $49.45. I’d have appreciated they informed me about the extra technician charge BEFORE trimming his nails as I didn’t know they changed their price!

Experiencia fantástica: Everyone was so kind and caring. It can be a challenge to handle a frightened macaw who was at the vet for a first time check up. They knew exactly how to protect her and themselves while being very gentle. I highly recommend this practise.

Experiencia positiva: My first time at the Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine. So happy with the vet Cindy Liu she was great with my GCC Curry! Friendly staff.
