Experiencia negativa: Dr Hoff did not treat me kindly. She acted as if I was making up my dogs symptoms. When I asked her if she checked my dogs ability to walk again… she looked at me like I was crazy and said we can’t let puppies run around. I didn’t ask her to do that I asked her if she checked my dogs ability to walk again since we’d been there a while at this point. It was a terrible experience.

Experiencia fantástica: Professional and caring. Educated us on the different routes for our cat with cancer. Unfortunately, our results came back that the cancer had spread and she was no longer eligible for surgery. Doctor had clear communication on next steps and didn’t make us feel rushed at all. The tech was also very caring, kind, and empathetic. We had received several verbal recommendations to come here for our cat’s case and they were great!

From the very first appointment, they have been incredible to work with while helping us navigate her treatment. With surgery coming up in just a few days, it’s obviously been a stressful time — but their team has made it so much easier. Experiencia negativa: I called to get information to see what I should do about my sick dog and got hung up on 2ce they basically laughed in my face they were very rude and interrupted me. If they can treat humans this way imagine how they treat your animals. They’ve lost all of my respect.

They were very confident that there was something missed in his install visit with local vet.. Very glad I decided to proceed with this vet . Had I not my poodle would have been undermedicated.Never hurts to get a second option.

Experiencia negativa: Took my cat here (he had lost use of his back legs, breathing troubles, not eating, etc), they ran a bunch of tests and we paid close to $1k. They sent us home and said they couldn’t find or figure out anything wrong with him… He died a few days later. If he was gonna die or it didn’t look too good, I wish they would have just told us instead of saying nothing is wrong and sending us home.

Experiencia fantástica: My pups seem to think the best time to fall ill is on the weekend. And of course it’s major, so no putting it off until Monday. I’m so thankful, albeit poorer, for all the wonderful staff at VSB. As traumatic as these incidents are it’s comforting to know your baby is getting the absolute best care. To have 24 hour attentiveness given by such a knowledgeable and compassionate staff helps reassure yourself, that other than praying, you’re doing everything you can to provide your pet with a fighting chance to have a positive outcome. They call you with updates. They don’t get snarky when you call with questions. Truly a kind and caring facility for the pet and its human(s). Phoebe is home and recovering. I am grateful for VSB . Phoebe says the jury is still out.. All she knows is that as nice as they seemed, they kept her in a cage and stuck her with needles. We won’t even talk about shaving the legs! She’s embarrassed.

Experiencia fantástica: My poor kitty, Tito jumped from the top of his cat tree chasing his sister and landed on his leg. We got referred to VSB, after X-rays showed he had a fracture. They were very patient and friendly with us, they explained each route of treatment thoroughly and were very open about the costs of each procedure. Thankfully he is all bandaged up and on the road to recovery. Thank you guys!!

Experiencia fantástica: The staff and team here are attentive, caring, fast, and their care and attention saved the life of our beloved puppy, Jet. He was diagnosed with a very rare disease and the team was able to start 24/7 care immediately until reaching his diagnosis. His care is still ongoing but thanks to Dr. Lock and her amazing team Jet is making a full recovery and will live a long and healthy life!

Experiencia fantástica: Small edit: I see a LOT of people complaining about cost. I didn't exactly want to pay what I did (cheaper than I thought), I completely understand that. However, this is not a regular vet. They are emergency care specialists. Not a general practitioner. I waited 4 hours but gladly would have waited longer. I brought a book. My pup was happy! :) My heart does go out to those who felt otherwise. Quite literally, some of the best staff I've come in contact with! I drove almost 4 hours for my dog Sadie's, consult with Dr. Vaughn. The techs, front desk girls and the doctor, were so welcoming! I was very nervous as I'm incredibly protective over my girl, but they treated her so well. She got a lot of love and was just hamming it up! She actually loves going to the doctor. Dr. Vaughn, explained everything so well. They had to do some xrays and other little tests, and he explained every single thing they done, why they did it and possible outcomes! I would gladly drive back to Birmingham from Bowling Green, Kentucky for my dog to be in the wonderful, capable hands, of this staff!

Experiencia fantástica: My fur baby, Bentley, was attacked by a German Shepherd and Huskey dog which were three to four times his weight!! he is a 15 pound Shih Poo that is 12 years old!!! He was in bad shape with severe wounds and bad infection! He was clinging to life and the doctors and staff at Veterinary Specialists of Birmingham saved him!!!! Their services, expertise, and friendliness were worth every penny!!! We are so happy to have our baby that’s a senior alive, thriving, and still with us!!!!! Experiencia fantástica: Great staff, from the receptionist to the tech to the veterinarian. The office and rooms were nice and clean and they got us back quickly. The emergency visit fee was much less than what I was expecting on a Sunday afternoon! I hope to never need their services again, but if you need an emergency vet, you should go here!

Experiencia fantástica: My 10+ year old AKC Champion Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a probable soft cell sarcoma mass on his head. We met with the surgeon who took his time to explain my different options and what to expect with each. I am highly impressed with the service we received.

Experiencia negativa: I just had a horrible experience as I carried an injured puppy into this clinic and because I didn't have the money right here after Christmas when this unexpected injury occurred, my sweet puppy received no treatment. She was clearly in intense pain, but they just ignored her. I understand wanting to be paid upfront for services, but I will never understand ignoring an innocent puppy. I would have done anything and I would have paid anything to help her. I just needed 2 more days for my check to hit my account. It was so hard just getting her in the car and then that 30 minute drive was like torture. Now I have her back home with me and she just keeps crying so loudly for all of my neighbors to hear. She is in so much pain. It is so unbearable to watch.I just noticed where she just urinated all over herself. I've never seen anything like it. I know that they could see how bad it was and they didn't do anything at all. They did say if I could not pay for services that I could "surrender" my puppy. I asked what they meant by that and the girl said "meaning you would no longer have ownership of your puppy." I will never forget that. What a horrible thing to say. I'm in there just broken and devastated about my puppy fearing I might lose her and that's what they had to say to me. I just pray she will be okay. My heart has just been shattered over this.
We are truly sorry to hear about how distressing this experience was for you, and we absolutely recognize how frightening and emotional it is to see a beloved pet in pain. We never want any pet owner to leave our hospital feeling unheard or unsupported.
As a specialty and emergency facility, we are required to have financial arrangements in place prior to initiating diagnostics or treatment. This is not a reflection of how much we care about our patients, but a policy that allows us to continue operating and providing care to the many animals who depend on us. When payment is not immediately available, we do our best to discuss all possible options, including transfer to another facility, third-party financing, or — in some cases — voluntary surrender so that care can still be provided.
We understand that these conversations can feel overwhelming in an already emotional moment, and we regret if any part of that discussion came across as insensitive. That was never our intention. Our team’s goal is always to advocate for the welfare of the pet while being transparent about the options available.

Experiencia fantástica: I have been to VSB 3 times with 2 different pets. Everyone is very patient and takes time to explain the situation and heard my concerns. My dog hates being at the emergency vet but she does love the love and attention from all the technicians. They also have visiting hours and are very responsive when I have called for extended stays. The care and attention at the clinic is 10/10.

Experiencia fantástica: Our Golden retriever had ingested a foreign object and we were referred to Veterinary Specialists by our Veterinarian…it was on a late Sunday afternoon and I knew we were at the right place when we were checking in, as the person in front of us was checking out and singing praises about the good care their pet had received! We were checked in and meeting with staff in a matter of a few minutes. They did a comprehensive review, stated an estimate of costs according to the plan of action and took him back for procedure. The procedure was a success and our boy was back and on his way home! We could not say and sing praises enough for the care he was given and the professionalism of everyone there-start to finish! Experiencia fantástica: I have taken several of my pets to VSB and have always been very pleased with the care. A Himalayan who turned out to have pemphigus foliaceous, a golden retriever who needed bilateral canine cruciate ligament repairs, Primrose when she had an exophthalmic disaster and a cat who had aplastic anemia. All were taken care of in the best possible way. Almost 3 years ago my 3 year old Pekingese, Primrose, herniated a vertebral disc and was instantly paralyzed; this happened just walking into my room. This was on a Sunday afternoon days prior to a visit to Spain to visit family. I got her to VSP and she was seen immediately by Dr. Vaughn. They did a CT scan to verify his diagnosis and to get more detail on the levels involved and she went right into surgery less than 3 hours from her collapse. The staff was so kind to her; they even braided the fur on her tail to keep her clean as she didn't regain function right away. I was allowed to visit her, which meant they had to cart her into an exam room where we could visit. Dr. Vaughn took lots of time explaining everything to me. Since Primrose needed to be in the hospital for a week or longer, they agreed to keep her there extra days so I could go on my trip. She had 24-hour care there and I could go on my trip after all. Dr. Vaughn called me every day while I was in Spain to report her progress. She made a full recovery!! (Second picture). Most recently my 14-yr old Pekingese April Rose, who is in fine health, developed a sudden gait problem. She didn't want to walk, eat, drink or move. I took her to my regular vet prescribed some medications and who recommended VSB. I was lucky enough to have Dr. Vaughn as our veterinarian. I was so relieved knowing how wonderful, knowledgeable and caring a vet he is. Her symptoms were improving with the medication given from my regular vet. He ruled out several diagnoses and told me her symptoms were atypical and that a CT scan wouldn't reveal anything that would contribute to a differential diagnosis. He felt strongly her symptoms were neurological in origin and suggested I take her to a neurologist. Once again, he took his time with me, didn't suggest unnecessary expensive tests, and was very kind. I feel so lucky to have VSB close by.

Experiencia negativa: Genuinely the worst vet I’ve ever been to. I brought my cat in for an emergency thinking he had blockage and was in a dangerous situation. They took over 2 hours to tell me that he didn’t have blockage and instead of sending me home after they made sure to try and find an issue with him by basically torturing him for 3 hours. They made excuses that he was “mad” or they couldn’t get a “sterile “ pee sample bc his bladder was too small? Any other ve pt has done so without trouble….this is a horrendous bus8ness and alll they want us your money, they could care less about your “baby” which they make sure to call your pet as if they are reading from a script. They are cold, uncaring, money grubbing people who can’t properly care for an animal….this was a sick trick show and reminds me why I don take my pets to just anyone. Also they charged me over $1300 to tell me they “think” it’s a uti instead of properly testing for one. I will never come back and will never let anyone I know fall for the same trap. This place only cares about money, not actually a true diagnosis of what’s wrong with your “baby”…

Experiencia fantástica: VSB is definitely the go-to emergency animal clinic in Bham. The after hours emergency staff is excellent and the vet docs are highly competent. Our recent visit at 10pm for a severe GI disorder with dehydration and blood loss was treated and the dog discharged home within 48 hrs. Also this clinic with highly trained docs is an excellent source for specialty non-emergent surgical procedures which we have used in the past.

Experiencia fantástica: I took my dog in for issues with his kidneys. He was excreting glucose in his urine causing him to drink plenty of water which in turn caused him to urinate quite frequently! VSB diagnosed his condition and provided a clear plan of action for his recovery. I am so grateful for their time and compassion. They treated Champ like he was one of their own pets! Dr. Cooley-Lock was absolutely great! She turned what could have been a terrible situation into nothing more than a normal checkup. She was so reassuring and totally put my mind at ease. Instructored me on what has happened and what could have been the cause as well as any other questions I had. I took her home and stayed with her round the clock and she is doing great. Experiencia fantástica: Brought my dog Jackson in we had a pretty bad scared waking up in the middle of the night.Seeing him struggle to walk and keep his balance we were terrified we went to go to the Tuscaloosa Emergency vet but was redirected to this veterinary. The receptionist was very friendly and communicated clearly. The vet tech was extremely friendly and treated Jackson with great care and he definitely has social anxiety but he seemed calm around her. The veterinarian gave us a clear diagnosis answered all my questions. Came up with a clear game plan on how to treat his issues. Since we left he has been back to his old self. If i lived closer this place would be my first choice every time.

Experiencia fantástica: We drove an hour from our house to this clinic on a Saturday night. We had a rescue 10 day old kitten that we needed to have checked out. She had stopped eating and was not using the bathroom when stimulated. They immediately took her straight to the back. I had to wait 10 minutes max in the waiting area and were on our way home in an hour. Everyone there was super friendly and the clinic is very clean. They went above and beyond to help get this baby get back in shape. Dr. Alverson and the staff were all very helpful and answered any and all the dozens of questions that we had. Their prices are very reasonable for a 24 hour vet clinic. It was actually cheaper than I expected. It was $154 for an exam/visit and $26 for the medication. I will be more than happy to pay that amount for fast service, helpful staff & friendly people! A lot of clinics are double the price and you sit there for hours for the staff to be rude and useless. Thank ALL of you here, y'all are truly amazing!

Experiencia negativa: This was the worse experience I’ve ever experienced. The fact that when you are sat in a patient room, and posted on the back of the door is a sign that states if you become hostile with our staff, we will have you removed from the premises, it THROWS UP A RED FLAG. Well be warned. The service is ridiculous!! The long waits are excruciating. Poor communication. We made 3 trips to drop our puppy off for orthopedic surgery because they couldn’t seem to get his appointment solidified and they kept having us sit in a room, only to tell us to come back the next day. This is after holding the puppy NPO more than once. At discharge we were told it was ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to keep him sedated for a month so he wouldn’t re-injure his leg, and to call weekly for medication refills, only to have our need for refill ignored, no call back, and them not taking our call when we called back, just putting us on hold until forced to leave messages. Bad business practices. If my dog re-injures his leg because of lack of medication, the surgery will be done for free.

Experiencia fantástica: Our beloved Molly girl was attacked by a coyote, she suffered severe injuries and unfortunately did not make it out of the hospital. The vets did everything they could for her and carefully explained our options. They are certainly very compassionate about what they do. As the vet hugged me and cried with me. The vet techs were very sincere as well. They really care about our pets and I saw with my own eyes how hard they work in here and how compassionate they are with the animals. Experiencia fantástica: We brought our Golden Retriever for heat stroke symptoms and she was in critical condition. Dr. Hoff was detailed and thorough in her quick analysis and set our expectations for the worse case and best case outcomes. The facility and staff were top notch and they saved our dog’s life! Surgery: Continued seeing the same professionalism from everyone. Surgery was successful with detailed release instructions. Note: I had previously taken a friend and her dog here for an emergency (midnight). Same professionalism and curtesy was observed. Bonus is being placed in a private exam room immediately (or if crowded, as soon as one is available).

Experiencia fantástica: We had a scary situation, and almost lost one of our beloved family pets while I was in the hospital having a baby. This vet communicated with our home vet and us daily, was up front about cost, and allowed me to visit my dog post-op during his stay. This was outside of normal visiting hours, but they worked with me on my way home from the hospital. The care and compassion they showed took a huge weight off of my chest, and we still have our sweet Rocky. They sent us home with clear directions of how to care for him the following week, meds, food, etc.

Experiencia negativa: BEWARE OF THIS PLACE !! If you have the need, opportunity and choice to get your pet to an emergency veterinary clinic, go to Steel City in Hoover !! That’s where our veterinarian recommended but they had a long wait that night and they referred us to VSB. This place( VSB)is all about making $$$ and have a few staff members including a Dr Centini that have no compassion, personality or competence. It’s taken me 5 months since we lost our sweet baby to post but she got significantly worse after she arrived at this place after midnight one Friday night. After 3 days of being at (VSB) we had no choice but to say goodbye to our sweet girl. I’ve read quite a few reviews here and I must say there’s no amount of $$ that would keep us from getting the very best care for her but there are people that cannot pay $7k-$15k for medical care for their pets. These people don’t care!! Even though there were a few sweet and compassionate veterinarians and staff, we were given a few options which the only option that they seemed to lean towards was “saying goodbye” to our sweet girl. After our family reluctantly made that hard decision, she seemed to try to communicate with us but we believe she was overly sedated to appear sicker that she really was which made this even more difficult. This has been the hardest, most emotional situation that I’ve EVER dealt with and still struggling with this decision 5 months later. Again do yourself and your pet a favor before you end up at VSB.

Experiencia negativa: Dishonest, incompetent, and unprofessional. This happened a year ago. Our cat was vomiting and barely eating on a weekend and our normal vet wasn't available. My wife was out of town. I took the cat to VSB late Saturday morning because it had "specialists" in the name. The vet immediately started talking about keeping him overnight (it was only 10am), which made no sense to me. Then the vet told me the fee (thousands of dollars) and then asked for 50% right there, upfront and nonrefundable. Obviously a dishonest scam. I paid it, foolishly, and left the cat there. I got a bad sense about things that afternoon and went back after the vet called and asked me if our cat gets nosebleeds. (No he doesn't.) They made his nose bleed when they forced something deep inside his nostril. I demanded to see the cat and went to the back room where they had him in a cold steel cage (no blanket). His face was covered in dried blood, an IV was in his arm, and 5-6 people were sitting around reading their phones (ignoring the animals). As I was looking at our cat in disbelief one of the doom scrollers started lecturing me about rabies shots. A dog in the cage next to our cat looked mortally injured. I asked to just take our cat home but the vet advised against it. So I went to our car and brought in a blanket to put in the cage and left again. But halfway home, I realized how stupid the situation was becoming and went back to get him. When I got there, I told them to bring him out in his carrier. They did, and he was soaking wet, covered in urine. I don't know if it was urine from him or from another animal. They didn't clean him or offer to do so. (Our other cat was terrified of him for the next week.) He still had blood on his face from them jamming something up his nose. It gets worse. The next morning, someone called me on the phone and read a script asking about my VSB experience. I told them everything. 30 minutes later, believe it or not, the exact same person called me back and read the exact same script verbatim. They didn't realize they had already called me. Monday morning, I took our sick cat to our normal vet. They immediately gave him a shot and he started eating again and perked back up that day. I am posting this as a public service. I know someone else who recently had an experience there. Do not take your pet or an animal to VSB unless it is a serious emergency and there are no other options. There are several other emergency care centers. In my experience with VSB, they were dishonest, incompetent, and unprofessional. Their desire to keep our cat all day and then overnight was an unethical ruse to make money and I believe it would have harmed our cat if I left him there that long. (Wife would have killed me.) Going to VSB for a non-critical emergency and listening to their dubious guidance was my mistake. Don't make the same mistake. I've since learned that VSB was acquired by a PE group, which is likely why it transformed from a good and reliable service provider into the horrid outfit it is today.

Experiencia negativa: They did great handling our baby, BUT they love to charge you for UNNECESSARY things they wanted to keep her overnight plus sum! &1,500-$3,100 all because they wanted to do X-rays after she pooped! All she had (praise the lord) was an extremely upset stomach and the zofran helped her! Their vet tech was very rude he needs to be careful about what he says in the hallway because my husband about lost his crap on him because he was going on about how we didn’t want to spend 3,000+-$ on X-rays!

Experiencia positiva: First off, let me start by. This is a very clean place. Staff was great. We have arrived about 11 PM with my dog just basically lethargic. We really didn’t know what was going on with her. I called Every emergency vet when I left my house they was not the busiest and could see her right away after about three or four hours she came in after she done bloodwork And a sonar told me that her liver enzymes was way high. Her white blood count was off. She had fluid around her intestines that should not be there and they think that it could be a possible Gallbladder rupture Said they wanted Start her own IV pain medicine and they would keep her overnight and do more test when whoever it was that was coming in at 8 AM this is at 4:45 AM so I told her that I would be contacting my vet At 8 AM when they opened up, she then told me that most vets do not have a sonar machine nor could they do the gallbladder surgery that it had to be a board certified Surgeon so then I asked well how much does the surgery cost? She said between eight and $10,000 thousand dollars Me, knowing That is very expensive to be treated at an emergency vet because I just went through this six months ago With my other dog, the bill was $5000 so that’s the reason why I wanted to take her to my vet and get a second opinion because who has $10,000 And then plus a $2000 Just laying around…… So I called my vet the next morning at 8 AM They told me to bring her in so I called this place back at 8:45 and they still have not diagnosed Roxanne Saying they needed to do a second sonar at like $500 a pop. My vett said no, we will do everything here Within 30 minutes of me, taking her to my vet I had answers. She did not have a rapture gallbladder us leaving at 4:45 in the morning, thinking we would never see her Again, just the emotional roller coaster we had answers within 30 minutes,(also they didn’t find fluid around her intestines) thank God… She did have to spend an additional three days at the vet They just diagnosed her with she ate something toxic if we don’t have a clue what It could have been they were thankful she’s still here with us after three days in the vet. It was only 600 bucks compared to the $1800 the 11 hours they had my baby. Yes, I’m very grateful they were there for if emergency happens But I do feel a lot of people have to surrender their pups because they cannot afford places like this or either Euthanize them…… I asked my vet how much they would’ve charged me for the surgery if that would’ve been the gallbladder They said around 3000. It’s just crazy how much is overcharged and I thank God that I have such a great vet. That guided me through the whole process…we need more vets who actually understand or animals are our babies Like I said very good in a emergency just always get a second opinion

Experiencia fantástica: I have used VSB emergency for the second time. My pet had urinary stones and was in great pain and unable to urinate properly. I am very satisfied with the services at Vsb. I have complete confidence in the operation and employees at Vsb. They are very caring and completely keep you informed about information and condition of your PET. The building is spotless and well equipped for you. The employees are very friendly and organized. All information on the recovery of surgery was covered and in writing also. I will continue to use VSB and give out information to all my friends to use them.

Experiencia fantástica: My sweet dog, Mr. Darcy, was experiencing severe coughs and was in a lot of pain when trying to breathe and I was able to call and get him seen immediately by the doctors. While there they took great care of us and continually checked on us and helped make our visit there as easy as possible! They took excellent care of him and helped me understand every step of the way and how to help him recover quickly.

Experiencia positiva: Pros: My cat was well cared for and received the proper treatment, which at the end of the day is the most important thing. This is the third trip I’ve made for emergency services at this clinic, and each time my animals have all been well cared for. They will always be my first choice for such services. Cons: Very expensive. For two nights of treatment plus tests and home care medicine, the cost was $2,500. (Heartworm infection fyi) Also, inter-office communication between techs, doctors, and front desk could’ve been better.

Experiencia negativa: I’m writing to express my deep grief, disappointment by how I was treated at your clinic by the brunette doctor or tech who was the first person I spoke to upon my arrival last night. I brought my dog in because I knew something wasn’t right. I may not have had a medical degree, but I knew him. I trusted my gut, and I did what any loving pet owner would do — I sought emergency care to keep him safe. But instead of being met with care or compassion, I was treated like I was overreacting by bringing him for care. Worse, I was spoken to in a way that made me feel like I didn’t belong there — she acted like I couldn’t afford the visit because it was very late at night and I wasn't dressed like someone with money. I earn more than an adequate living. That judgment was not only unfounded, it was cruel.You had one job: to listen and to care. You did neither.Just hours after being told my dog was “fine,” I woke up to find him dead. I will live with that moment for the rest of my life — the guilt, the heartbreak, and the anger — all made worse by the way you dismissed us when we needed you most.I hope you understand that your words, tone, and assumptions had real consequences. You failed him. And you failed me.Not every emergency looks textbook. But every patient deserves to be taken seriously, and every human being who walks through your doors deserves to be treated with dignity — regardless of what you assume about them. I’ll never get my dog back. But I hope no one else has to walk out of your clinic feeling the way I did that night: helpless, humiliated, and unheard.

Experiencia fantástica: Granger (French Bulldog) experienced a fall down stairs causing severe lower back pain. This vet did a fine job and provided clear recommendations to nurse him back to health. He’s doing much better.

Experiencia fantástica: Our dog had a puzzling to us emergency with severe pain. We visited 3 ERs and 2 regular clinics in a 5-day period trying to get help, a diagnosis, and treatment plan. On our 5th day of seeking help, our regular vet recommended that we immediately go to Veterinary Specialist of Birmingham to get a proper diagnosis and treatment (we did not know about this ER before our regular vet's recommendation). The doctors and professionals at VSB immediately recognized our dog's pain, stabilized the pain, and communicated a clear and concise testing plan for diagnosis and treatment options. Our dog spent a couple of days at their hospital, and we appreciated their policy of "call and check whenever you'd like". Everyone I spoke to or interacted with was knowledgeable and courteous, and never treated us like we were bothering them with our check-in calls. We still have some follow-up and a road to recovery with our dog but wanted to say thank you to VSB for the care you provided our dog.

Experiencia fantástica: I can not say enough good things about this place. I had to take my sweet Sally Mae there last week after she got sick...they were so kind and caring and took great care of her....unfortunately my sweet girl passed away ,but I felt better knowing she was in their hands.... they even called to check on me after she had passed ,which really meant a lot.
