Big Country Veterinary Clinic: Reviews
Fantastic experience: My husband is in the Army and our poor cat had a urinary blockage on our way through Abilene, Texas. We originally brought him to the ER veterinary hospital and transferred his care here. We are so thankful and they have been taking amazing care of our boy. Thank you forever!
Fantastic experience: I wanted to express how much i appreciated the card I received today in regards to my MILO ❤️ IT MEANT SO MUCH!!
Fantastic experience: This is the only vet place that can deal with my choo choo. He has bad anxiety with the vet. But they always get the job done. I'm grateful.
Fantastic experience: The most caring compassionate and knowledgeable drs and staff we have used. They took excellent care of our beloved dachshund
Fantastic experience: ** Update ** We have been bring all of our pets to Big Country Vet. We have also used the boarding facility here. They are fantastic. One of our foster kittens had a broken leg and it didn't matter how many times I called with questions for her, they were patient and helpful each and every time. My German Shepherd is very dramatic and I can't even tell you how many times we rushed over with what we thought was an injury only for her to be perfectly fine. I could go on and on about how amazing the staff is. I love this place and having them help our animals and fosters has been a blessing. My husband found a kitten at his work and brought him home. We had a minor panic when he ate something he shouldn't have. Everyone was quick, friendly, and helpful. The kitten is just fine, and they answered all of our questions on how to care for our newest family member.
Negative experience: I do not recommend this vet. I had a negative experience with a surgical procedure on my 13-year-old dog. I initiallyh brought him in to have 5 lipomas removed (as annotated in the presurgical vet notes attached) and consented on day of surgery to having 7 removed. He ended up with 25 removed (as annotated in the vet's postsurgical notes attached) and not even the ones I specifically stated I wanted removed. When addressed with the vet who performed the surgery (who was different from the vet who initially assessed my dog and who had never spoken to me until after performing surgery on my dog to know what he was supposed to be removing) and him telling me he did not see what I consented to with the initial vet or with the vet tech at drop off, but rather removed all the lipomas he saw. I asked for someone in leadership to reach out to me and provide me a copy of the with the presurgical paperwork where I listed what was to be removed and consented to and explain why it was not followed. No one ever called. I followed up with an email to the vet to which no one responded. Today, I went in to the office and discussed my concerns with the owner, Dr Eckert. He was very dismissive of my concerns. Not apologetic at all. He did provide me an emailed response from a Dr Arche that was printed out. However, I never received (double checked inbox, spam and deleted). A phone call from the vet or office manager would have been appreciated. I am used to an office that calls to check on pets they've operated on and who addresses customer concerns when they arise. This does not happen here. Prices are outrageous and they are typically running late for appts. Fortunately in this case, my dog is healing well. My complaint is that I did not consent to him to removing 25 lipomas. I consented to 7 areas as I would not put my elderly dog under undue stress to remove superficial skin tags. Dr Eckert said his staff went above and beyond. I'm sure glad my dog wasn't there for an amputation. I'm going to go somewhere where the vet goes above and beyond and provides the care I consent to and follows up to ensure my pet is healing and who is timely on appts.
Fantastic experience: Everyone was wonderful and caring. They took my Blanca(Chihuahua) in right away for emergency surgery. She recovered wonderfully and is now back to herself. Thank you to all the staff that saved her.
Negative experience: We paid $400 to have my sweet puppy cremated and we were told after being there to the very end that they got busy and he was discarded with the trash. Really?? Ive had my best puppy for 17 years, he was like a child to me. This is so disheartening and I now have nouthing. Think twice before trusting this place with your family pet, I made a huge mistake in doing so and am paying greatly.
Fantastic experience: Bobo had a tummy ache. Dr Archie fixed me right up. Now I feel better. I peed in the floor twice to show them I feel better. My favorite Vet.
Negative experience: Took my dog to get his nails clipped and bathed, he came home with long nails still. Only the tips were cut, probably by 1/4 of an inch. The bath he had did not cover his smell much at all. I never right reviews but I was just disappointed in the groomer.
Fantastic experience: What a nice place to have to go when you are traveling. Our girl got sick while traveling back home to Florida. I called around 7:30 and they got me in at 9. Dr Ueckert and his tech were really nice. Took care of our Maya with meds and off we went on our way.. Very grateful to them and their staff. ❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic experience: I am so thankful for this place. We had to make a decision and say goodbye to my furry friend whom I've had for 11 years. I loved him so much he was such a good dog. And the people there they walked me through the whole process, and they gave me all the time we needed to spend time with him. I recommend this clinic.
Fantastic experience: Shout out to Big Country Veterinarian clinic! My bulldog puppy ate the wrong food, vomited and got very lethargic. I took him in. They checked him out and said they thought he was ok. And there was no charge! What a great service! Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Got my cat in ASAP. Spent time with her, did a thorough exam, xrays, blood work, lab panel. Dr and staff are Very helpful. They were happy to answer questions I had. Their office and exam rooms clean. (Things I notice) I'm very grateful I was referred to this clinic.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Folsom took really good care of our kitty Tigger. The vet techs were amazing also, especially Shion. Thank you for giving Tigger such good care and love.
Fantastic experience: New patient to the clinic, I called yesterday (12/4) to see if I could get my cat in because he had a ruptured anal gland, and while they didn't have any availability on the fourth, they had an opening for today (12/5). Everyone, from check-in to the tech to the Vet himself, was phenomenal. They took such good care of my boy and explained everything throughly. I was fully prepared to drop an upwards of $300 but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the cost was roughly half of that! My boy's on his way to feeling better (though he feels kind of crummy right now, two shots will do that!) and I have everyone at Big Country Vet to thank for it. Appreciate you guys!
Fantastic experience: I really love ❤️ Big Country Vet, they are professional and caring.
Fantastic experience: Very clean, very friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately we lost our 12yr old baby, so unable to state pros or cons..
Fantastic experience: Dr.Folsom and the team at Big Country Vet have been nothing short of phenomenonal! We went to the clinic knowing prognosis was not good for our sweet fur baby - but Dr.Folsom stepped right up and made sure we were educated and informed the entire way. He was so very reassuring and comforting throughout the process. I truly am thankful for Dr.Folsom even though circumstances were not what we hoped for. Thank you Dr.Folsom & Big Country Vet.
Positive experience: Well- something tragic happened yesterday. Our precious dog Sydney was hit by a car. I called Big Country they said you can bring her in right now. They come out to the truck and took her inside ever so gently. Dr Howard came into the room to talk to us after he has seen Sydney's X-rays and gave us a detailed description of her injuries. He then gave us two options as what to do that would be best and most beneficial for Sydney. It was a heartbreaking decision for us that we had to let her go. Doctor Howard was behind us every step of the way and we truly thank him and the crew of big country vets for their compassion and caring
Negative experience: Horrible people. Refused to treat my cat after paying them
Negative experience: They denied me help after taking my money. After I introduced my wife, their attitude seemed to change entirely. I was discriminated against due to my sexual orientation. At the end of my visit, the vet pulled me in and told me that if I did not leave in the next 10 minutes, they would put my pet down themselves. This is a completely unsafe environment for you and your pet. DO NOT GO HERE!
Negative experience: I paid $73 just for them to not give me a diagnosis, and sent me home for my cat to die. The doctor had no empathy.
Fantastic experience: We love this place and so do our animals!
Fantastic experience: We had to make the difficult and emotional decision to euthanize our very sick 16 year old dog, Macy. Dr. Folsom and Sydney were incredibly supportive and guided us through the process. They gave us all of the time we needed and were informative and emotionally supportive. I’d never gone through this process before and words cannot express how grateful we felt that she had such supportive, gentle and compassionate care. Thank you for helping us through such a difficult and emotional event. There was no suffering.
Fantastic experience: I have an elderly dog who is almost blind and deaf. Big Country Veterinary Clinic does her grooming and they take excellent care of her. I would highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: The staff was wonderful and the Vet was amazing! I wouldn't take my boys anywhere else. I have two Mainecoons and they were pampered and loved on by everyone. Thank you Big Country Vet Clinic!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing people, very professional and understanding, excellent surgical vets .. they save my baby and wasn't over bearing.. very clear on what to do, expect and very caring... I'd give 10 stars if I could!
Fantastic experience: Today was my mine and my husband's first time being here, I wish it was under better circumstances but the people here were so comforting and understanding. We had to put our sweet boy down and we couldn't have asked for anything better than the treatment they gave us. They went over everything with us, gave us plenty of time to say goodbye and we got to be with him the entire time. We really appreciate everything they did for us today.
Fantastic experience: This is an amazing facility that has all of the necessary medical equipment to take care of your pet. The doctors and staff are very knowledgeable and compassionate.
Fantastic experience: They are simply the best! Manda Leann was my vet tech she went above and beyond especially when it came to comforting my babies and I they put my mind at ease and took good care of my animals
Fantastic experience: Our 2 year old terrier mix got really sick on Thursday. Big Country Vet made sure he was seen. We had never used them before. He spent 2 nights in their hospital. Absolutely the best care we could have hoped for. Compassionate from the minute we walked in. We will always be grateful.
Fantastic experience: The staff, vet techs (like Tristen), and doctors here are so amazing! They are friendly, extremely thorough and very loving to my sweet pups, Chylo and Chevelle. They go out of their way to give complete care and make things easy for us to get whatever we need for the pups, even when they’re super busy. Their prices are VERY reasonable, even though I’d take my loved ones here anyway. You can’t get better than this place! If you’re like us, your pets are family. Treat them as such and take them here!!!!!
Negative experience: They do good service but be prepared to pay an exorbant amount of money. I went to neuter a local street cat to keep population down and when I get there they offer all these services, NOT PRICES, so they suggest I the cat check for feline leukemia, get shots, give pain medication….. so I agree. Hoyrs later, I get an invoice of $300! For an outdoor local cat. Then when I pay and tell them they should really say how much the cost for each item is, I get interrupted and cut off twice and dismissed.
Fantastic experience: Took our female mini dachshund there due to her suddenly being unable to walk due to a back issue. They operated on her back, repaired the damage. She stayed there about a week. When we took her there she was unable to use her back legs. Could not walk or stand. It's been a couple of weeks now. She is walking and has regained nearly full use of both legs. The people there are wonderful. Thank you.
Positive experience: Seemed to be very costly to help a good friend get his pup his 1st shots, but seeing as he needed them asap, and it was a Friday afternoon, I decided to go with them. They refused to give him the free sample of heart guard because they weren't sure if it was a sample after u buy it first...who samples after u buy? Then they forgot the vaccine folder they give u all filled out for ur new pet I got the little book, and they still never filled it out. Very frustrating when u have tried to do a good service for a friend, and then u get treated as if ur not a real customer or something?
Fantastic experience: When your first walking into their facility the place inside is very clean, staff there very polite friendly very compassionate when taking care of your fur pets, will definitely consider anyone who is looking for veterinary Big Country is definitely the place to go, prices are very reasonable not so expensive thank you Big Country.
Fantastic experience: It is SOOO comforting to bring our kid, err, I mean our puppy dog to a vet that we can fully trust every time over the past 2 years! Yes, it seems expensive but we have always headed back home feeling like we got our money’s worth!
Fantastic experience: The reception crew at Big Country is friendly and professional, they are always looking to help people waiting and keep the traffic flowing. The Vets have gone above and beyond to help me and Daizy through two big emergencies. They took her in day of call and got her fixed up that same day. If your fur baby needs help in an emergency they're the first ones too call.
Fantastic experience: I should have written a review alot sooner. But i had taken a kitten from outside in after trying to take care of it. It just still looked not right. I had gotten attached to this kitten and named him buddy. It was winter really cold 2019. So I took him in to get looked at and they said his intestines were in his chest. That he would only get worse and die. So I had to put him down. Devastated me. I wanted to save him. The dr. She could tell. They took him and the helper comes back and told me. Evemrything was covered by the vet. Really touched me.
Fantastic experience: Seriously love this place- the vet techs are super helpful and everytime I come Im surprised how smooth the process is .
Fantastic experience: Very friendly place, I explained how my dog might be a little aggressive from his wounds and they still saw him with no hesitation. Will continue to go back.
Fantastic experience: The staff is very kind and knowledgeable, and their care is high quality. They're prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality. As a broke college student, I loved that I didn't have to sacrifice trust to save money. I've recently moved out of Abilene and my hope is to find a vet like them!
Fantastic experience: I’m very pleased with this vet office. They care about you and the animals the staff is Awesome
Fantastic experience: The staff and Dr. Adam Arche @Big Country Veterinary Clinic is very kind, understanding, knowledgeable and caring ❤️ ...I was in a lot between November and December"2023" for my sick cat TEAL who was 10 years old..They did everything to help her get well ⬛ but unfortunately she died on 12/22/23 I couldn't afford to have her cremated and put her ashes in a urn ⚱️ because I spent alot of money on her recovery treatment...They were so generous to pick her up at my apartment and take care of all the details for her cremation and urn ⚱️....I am truly grateful and blessed that they cared so much ❤️ ...I even got a card from the staff signed with messages of love for Teal her paw prints with the card and their condolences Thank You So Much ❤️ I really appreciate them and totally recommend this veterinarian place. Thanks ❤️ Julie McDowell
Negative experience: People who brings their dogs here for treatment will not only loose their animal but $3,000.00.do not trust this clinic with your pets care
Fantastic experience: Loved our first visit here at the vet. Very kind and informative staff. Felt welcomed as soon as we entered and heard with all of our questions and concerns. Just moved to the area and so happy to have found a great vet.
Fantastic experience: Amazing vet and staff! They did a back surgery on our pup and got her to walking again. They are great about updating you! 5 stars!
Fantastic experience: I've been on the search for a new vet in Abilene and after reading reviews, I made an appointment with Big Country Vet and I am so glad I did. Everything was so simple to getting an appointment (within the same week of calling which I have never had that experience anywhere else), to getting text updates, and checking in. I showed up with my pup Daisy and the front desk staff checked us in and we were seen quickly. Amanda & Dr. Arche were great! They made sure I understood everything they were doing with Daisy when it came to what vaccines they were giving her and were so sweet to my pup. 10/10 experience and would definitely recommend to anyone new in town looking for care for your pets.
Fantastic experience: Thank you Big Country for everything you have done to Ben. We have visited for years before we moved and I would say this is the best Veterinary Clinic in Abilene. My daughter also wants to say thank you to everyone there for the sweet card and his paw prints.
Fantastic experience: This has been the best vet clinic. Their staff is so caring, sympathetic and genuinely good people. I had them take care of one of my dogs who was attacked by a coyote. I just recently had to get my dog euthanized and I couldn’t have asked for better treatment. I then received a sympathy card that was signed by their staff and they took all 4 paw prints for me inserting them into the card. This was so, very thoughtful!! Couldn’t ask for a better place to take care of my animals! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!
Negative experience: Do not come here. They lie so bad. I called to ask if my dog who is ten would require anything else for his $143 teeth cleaning and the lady who i called said I do not have to purchase anything else for him. My mistake that I didn’t get her name. So we come in to pick up my dog and they threatened the police on us if we didn’t pay the $200 for the iv bag and other things that they said we had checked yes for which they checked yes for us. You can clearly see the difference in the check marks. So please don’t come here they lie and threaten the police when we said we don’t have any money and only enough for the teeth cleaning. I am fuming. Never will I come here again.
Fantastic experience: I have been taking my animals to Big Country Veterinary Clinic for more than twenty-five years. The staff is always professional, compassionate, and knowledgeable. This week, our puppy was spayed. She so was well cared for and is healing quickly. I am so grateful to the entire team at Big Country for helping keep our furbabies healthy and happy.
Fantastic experience: I was very impressed and highly satisfied with my overall experience with Big Country Vet. I am the owner of a Rottweiler and the Vet and technician were highly trained in managing while completing the exam maintaining a safety without assistance from me. They also administered medication quickly and efficiently without issue. Everything was explained this was the best vet experience I’ve had since moving here. I was referred to Big Country by my Vet who was out of office, and I’m probably going to return, I was very impressed.
Fantastic experience: The clinic is always friendly and helpful. It is easy to make timely appointments. Dr. Norwood is a true gem! She cares about your animal and you - I am grateful for the wonderful service provided by all who work at Big Country Vet.
Fantastic experience: Went in for my dog's yearly checkup and shots. I like that I can make her appointment online. Minimal wait time and friendly service. About what I expected to pay for shots and her heartworm medication came with a $15 rebate so that was a nice bonus.
Fantastic experience: My puppy needed to see a doctor the staff was very helpful in getting me an appointment same day. And the treatment was top-notch, thank you
Fantastic experience: I had to review to talk about what a compassionate staff they have. They had one of our dogs for a week and a half and they were so sweet to him and very accommodating when we wanted to visit him. They also sent daily updates (and some pics) which I really appreciated.
Negative experience: Very unsatisfied. Sooner or later you will be disappointed with this place. Some of the staff are nice and are carrying while others treat it as work and an inconvenience. My puppy got surgery and anal glands procedure done. The sad part is that after we picked her up she was full of blood and poop. Very unsanitary. The worst part is that she had to stay with them for hours for post surgery this way. We had dried blood and poop to remove when we got home. Rooms are nasty, smelly, and full of animal hair, I understand it’s a vet clinic but when you are the first to arrive after opening? Makes me believe they didn’t even sanitize the place after leaving work. Something the Abilene Health Inspector might want to look into. I started to come to this place for the good reviews and realized it’s must of changed. If you love your pets, be careful for it will break your heart when they treat them like a number to get in and out and not as family.
Negative experience: We had an unpleasant experience with some staff. The facility is nice and I'm sure they do good work. However, our situation was not handled well. I waited to see if the situation could have been handled differently and it was not. We had brought our large dogs there a few times . Our German Shepard went there for his shots around 9 months. He came home lethargic and quiet that Friday afternoon. Saturday he was really really quiet and ate very little. Sunday at 6 am my daughter burst in the room and said he was cold. I took him to the Emergency Hospital for an autopsy. I didn't tell them who gave him the shots. I called big country that Monday and told them he has passed away 36 hours after his shots and first thing from their mouth was it couldn't have been the shots and implied we must have done something wrong. I'm not sure what happens now.
Negative experience: If I could give zero stars it would accurately sum up my experience today . My husband & I found an injured turtle on the freeway - called this clinic and explained the situation - they advised us to come in . We arrived and the turtle was taken to the back to be seen by the vet . We were told his injuries were severe and they recommended euthanasia. They also told us we would need to pay for this at $79 ! It was not our pet - we simply did an act of kindness by taking the turtle to a professional and doing our best to help. I understand that every business has policies but I was not told I would be responsible to pay the bill for rescuing a little creature. What happened to simple kindness and love for all creatures ? They were more concerned about dollars rather than the suffering of this little guy. I am from Canada and had previously brought an injured stray cat to a vet clinic - they took care of the cat - it was that simple . They showed compassion for the animal & money was not their motivation. We are new to Abilene & will need a vet for our 2 dogs - this will not be the clinic we use .
Negative experience: This place performed surgery on my kitten and ended up killing her. They kept her in observation for around 4 days while she was not being monitored nor were updates being placed. As the weekend came around, I decided I wanted her back with me, thinking she must be scared and alone. The day before I could pick her up, I got a call; she was dead, and they asked if I wanted to cremate her. I was shocked and was also told she died around 10 hours earlier. She had been day since early that morning. They offered no explanations, only blame, claiming I didn't send her records over so they didn't know her history. Not true; their sister clinic sent the records, and I double checked they got them before the surgery. THE VET DID NOT BOTHER TO READ THEM; SHE ASPIRATED AND DIED ALONE UNMONITORED. They do not care about your beloved pet; they will not treat them with care. Go somewhere else I wish I had. The sad part is her normal vet wasn't available when I chose this place, and they killed her. She was my soul cat and my best friend. I miss her so much; she didn't need to die alone, scared and confused.
We believe you are reviewing the wrong veterinary clinic.
Fantastic experience: This vet not only made time to see my sick dog (my own vet couldn’t fit me in ☹️) the same day I called, but diagnosed the problem and fixed her right up at a reasonable cost. I think they are great and will use them in the future.
Negative experience: Told me that if I needed more medication for my dogs pain to let them know. Went in and asked for some just to be told they wouldn't give him any until he had surgery which is scheduled with a specialist out of town since no one in Abilene specializes in this type of surgery. Receptionist made me feel like I was being judged for not doing the surgery with them. All they care about is getting money not about the health of my dog.
Fantastic experience: Caring and experienced staff !! I have six cats and one Poodle puppy And have accessed every service they offer
Fantastic experience: Same day appointment, got in within 30 minutes. Doctor and staff really awesome and attentive while meeting our needs. Although my bill was over $300, It covered 3 medicines, doctor physical, ear cleaner, and nail trim. Really huge facility, apparently built and ready to take on the city. Parking was interesting because all the spots around the whole facility shift to the left. Because it's in a compound of reinforced steel traffic has to be careful driving around the building due to its one entrance, one exit layout. When leaving, no matter what side of the building you park on, you'll head toward someone else, drive cautious.
Fantastic experience: Big Country Vet was great to work with healing our new fur baby to our family. Buster was an unexpected addition as he showed up on our doorstep. Jamie and the team walked us through the steps of his healing and kept us notified of his treatment. Thank you for being so kind and informative!
Fantastic experience: They got my little girl in the same day and took wonderful care of her! Very sweet and caring staff and doctors! Thank you, BCV!
Negative experience: I took my dog to get spayed here today. I was originally quoted $150 if all I wanted done was the spay. They sent me a form to fill out the day before where you choose to pay extra if you want other services. One of the options was IV catheter for fluids, I don’t know what kind of surgery can be done without fluids or an IV. This made no sense, so I chose to pay the $60 extra. I picked my dog up and her leg was bloody. They told me it was from the IV which is fine, but why didn’t they clean it?? On top of this, I get my dog home (who isn’t supposed to be super active or be moved around a lot) and she starts licking her incision (DUH, what dog doesn’t??) and I called and made sure that this was in fact a problem and they said yeah you need to keep it dry, you can come back up here for a cone. Why in the world would they not offer the cone to begin with because what dog doesn’t lick after a surgery?? So I had to load my dog up again and bring her back to the clinic to be sized for the cone AND pay $13 for the cone. Not to mention, they left the paper collar on her under her collar and I didn’t notice until they took her collar off to size her. I don’t mind paying for good work on my dog, but it would have been nice to know before hand. Overall, it was a weird experience and it seems to be low priced low standard practice.
Fantastic experience: Good place to take your pets. Been taking my service dog here for 3 years and I don't have any complaints. They're good with her.
Fantastic experience: Went here for a second opinion on my cat's malignant chin tumor. Dr. Ueckert had her evaluated in 5 minutes, surgery that night and home with a perfectly sutured chin the next day -- she's doing beautifully and the whole thing cost a fraction of what I was expecting.
Fantastic experience: From scheduling to picking up, I could not have asked for an easier transition! The staff were amazing and very kind. I really like that the Dr. called me to let me know that my baby was doing great after her spay. We will def be returning with my other animals!
Positive experience: I know inflation affects everything, but I swear this place used to be much cheaper. It’s a hit or a miss with which ever vet you get. Today I took my 12 year old dog in, because she hasn’t been able to hear me the passed two weeks. The vet just kept writing it off that she’s just old. Even after i told him three times that she didn’t have any hearing problems before her bath two weeks ago. thankfully he still gave her a steroid shot and some antibiotics. She can already hear me again. Senior dogs deserve just as much care. Not everything is because they’re old.
Fantastic experience: Great Drs and staff. Were very accommodating and concerned with my dog when I contacted them for unknown illness. I am glad they were able to give her the care and attention she needed.
Fantastic experience: My dog cut her leg and they were able to work me in on very short notice in the middle of the afternoon as a first time customer While I was there the staff was very helpful and they couldn’t have treated my dog any better than they did.. I will definitely be going back in the future. Hopefully under better circumstances.
Fantastic experience: This place is absolutely amazing. I bring all my pups here because they treat them as family members and take incredible care of them. My favorite part is they give them your last name as well to kind of make everything seem very family doctor type of place. I know it’s a small thing, but those details are the most important sometimes. They also answer any and all pet related questions and provide just about any service you need. Overall I would give it a 4.99, with .01 stars off because they can be slightly more expensive than other places. There was initially some sticker shock at some treatments, but you realize really quickly that you get what you paid for with the quality care and general awesomeness. I won’t take my pups anywhere else. Keep up the amazing work. *Update* I will up my rating to 6 stars if I could. One of our big beloved fur babies left us last week, and Big Country Vet helped us tremendously in such a sad situation. They arranged the cremation, treated our pup with dignity and respect when handling his body, and provided us comfort and kind words. The six star rating comes from the condolence card they sent us. Everyone at the vet took time to sign it and offer us beautiful words in our time of grief. The most amazing part was they included a nose and paw print in the card. As soon as I saw the nose, I knew it was him and I cried all over again. Not out of sadness for missing him, but out of gratitude for such a wonderful and beautiful gift that we will never forget. Our dogs are members of our family and we love them as such. Big Country Vet will be the only place we ever take them. In life and death, they go above and beyond to provide the care and support that not only your pets need, but the human that comes with them. I can never thank you enough for the nose and paw prints, my heart healed a little today.his little running buddy Zeus thanks you as well
Fantastic experience: I want to personally thank the vet that who walked me through my cat being put down. I also appreciate that they got me in last minute. I also want to say thank you for the assistant who was helping the vet that day. She was so sweet and so understanding and I appreciate them dealing with my emotions because I was a mess. The only reason I gave a four star was because the girl up front I dealt with about my cat going into the initial appointment and then picking up his remains, I don’t know if she was having an off day but she just didn’t seem very sympathetic. I wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary, maybe just her saying I’m so sorry about your loss Would’ve meant a huge deal for me, but I just felt when I initially came into see if my cat could be seen She seemed a little annoyed. I get it, it was end of the day, but I also needed my cat to be seen because he was not doing great. I even apologized for coming in without an appointment. when I picked up my cat remains, I just felt like there was no empathy, and she handed me the bag to where It almost fell out of my hands, Again, I don’t know if she’s just having an off day. The only thing I’m kind of sad about is I was told I was going to get a paw print of my cat and I had asked if I could get some of his hair I did not get either of those. I do, though appreciate the vets empathy, understanding, and patience as well as the assistant the day they did put my cat down I can’t stress how much that meant to me and that I want to say thank you to them. Update: I just received a very sweet card with the staffs condolences. It also had Sheldon's fur, paw prints and his little nose print. I'm in tears but I'm so happy I was given this! I appreciate y'all so much! ❤️ 5 stars!!!
Fantastic experience: My Mini Poodle Sullivan had his first ever seizure yesterday morning and it scared me to death. He's my ESA since my husband works out of state now. I called them immediately since they are so close and fit me in in less than an hour. A young lady came to my car and assisted me in with him. She took him back to be examined and in about 15-20 mins, she and the Dr came in. Thoroughly explained the situation and answered all my questions. Thank you so much for being so compassionate!
Fantastic experience: We have been going to Big Country for a long time now and we absolutely love them. The entire staff has always been so friendly and welcoming. They really do care about your pets and will get your fur baby in very quickly. The office is also very clean. We highly recommend them!!! Thank you Big Country for always going above and beyond for our babies!!!
Fantastic experience: Our English Bull Terrier was very sick and we weren’t sure what was going on. Our Vet had retired and Frontier had bought his practice. We took our boy in and after 3 days they Xrayed him and learn he had a blockage. Then told me they couldn’t help me they were too busy to help me and recommended Emergency Vet Clinic. I was about to have a big expense on my hand and it would have tripled in cost using Emergency Vet. I was abandoned at the last minute on Thursday at 4:30 to find a vet to help us in a desperate need of surgery and life threatening situation. Most vet offices are not doing surgeries on a Friday! Call after call no one could help. Then when I called Big Country Vet a very kind and understanding young woman told me not to worry they were going to help us! Next morning they did a sonogram and took a big part of his intestine out and kept him in their hospital for 3 nights keeping me posted through text and pictures . They were so thoughtful. He came home on Monday in great shape. The cost was very reasonable. Big Country Vet is a fully equipped animal hospital their capabilities far surpass any other vet clinic in Abilene with compassionate and qualified doctors and techs, all caring professionals. They groom and kennel animals they can take care of every need. I’m so grateful and will never use anyone else! Thank you so much Big Country Vet! Y’all are awesome!!! One of the photos below they sent me was of him in their hospital he doesn’t’t look happy but he was well taken care of! There was someone with him all night every night! So nice the way they kept you updated.
Fantastic experience: Very hard day made better with Dr. Norwood and Tina. I appreciated straight answers and options and though my kitty took wings before his time, the humanity of these kind yet fierce women took tender care of this remaining human as well as Tango preparing for his journey. I have not had such kindness bestowed by a vet and staff in my 69 years. Thank you for your intelligent diagnosing, your thorough explanation of options and your kindness.
Fantastic experience: I’m new in town and my cousin recommended Big Country - my cat was ill and they fit me in as soon as possible that morning. The staff is kind and caring and the Vet put my at ease. Phoebe is feeling much better and I’m very grateful for Big Country Veterinary clinic. She blended in with the flooring
Fantastic experience: We love Big Country and the amazing staff! They are always so sweet and have always listened to any concern that we have had. This was our second time using them and we will be switching to them from our old vet. We definitely recommend using them!!
Fantastic experience: Y'all are the greatest ❣️. We're so glad that we found you. Our precious Matilda had aggressive cancer and was consumed by it in a month. Y'all held our hands and gave us a precious gift of her paw and nose print..... THANK YOU
Fantastic experience: Great customer service and friendly staff & vets! I love being able to request appointments through an app and being able to wait patiently in my car upon arrival. Perfect business that care about my dogs.
Fantastic experience: Had to have a quick surgery for my dog timber took off there Thursday night. He had surgery Friday morning. Everything is going well. Really really appreciate this place.
Negative experience: BIG COUNTRY VETERINARY NEGLIGENCE If you've ever had a dog or cat sick enough to spend the night at the Emergency Clinic then you know that you must pick them up early and transfer them to their regular vet if they require further care. This morning my sick dog was denied admittance to BIG COUNTRY VETERINARY because we didn't have an appointment. I was furious! There I think was sitting in the parking lot with a sick dog that still had his IV catheter in his leg so he could get more fluids and the place that I had told everyone was so wonderful had just refused to admit my baby because we had failed to have an emergency without advance notice. For context, my dog was an established patient with Big Country for years and is the kind of dog everyone falls in love with. He's been there for the routine and the major events. As for me, I'm the dog dad that says "You do whatever it takes to get my baby well! Price isn't an issue." And I always pay the bill in full immediately after they hand it to me. And they even had his ER notes emailed to them prior to our arrival and I was assured they were expecting us. Ps. I got him in elsewhere and he is on his way to a full recovery.
Fantastic experience: Service was super fast and the veterinarian came to our car and explained everything so well about our dog. She was so kind and reassuring that we were doing things right. I highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: Best animal care in Abilene. Love that I have the option to have my dog groomed before his appointment to see the veterinarian. Front staff, Vet Techs and the veterinarians are all amazing here.
Negative experience: They misdiagnosed my cat. Saying that he only had some puncture wounds and he was in pain due to bites and bruising and needed antibiotics. That he was ornery because of that. Sent him home the next day after being there overnight and my cat bled to death due to undetected internal injuries. He was bleeding from his rear and in agony screaming in pain by morning and died before I could get him to another vet. If they had detected the internal injuries correctly, he might have had a chance or at least we could have discussed euthanasia and not have him suffer as much as he did. Will NEVER take another pet there.
Fantastic experience: My cat was at deaths door when I brought in over from the ED. His condition was initially an enigma to the staff but they persevered to figure out what the root cause of the issue was. Over his two week stay the staff were incredibly kind and accomodating. The facilities are incredible and it gave us relief to know he was in safe hands. Thanks to the team! We’ve since been back as my cat seems injury prone and will continue to do so as long we live in the area.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Walker and her team are everything we didn't know we needed for vet care of our furry family. While we have always received great customer service and patient care for our dogs at Big Country, Dr. Walker showed a great depth of compassion for our sweet boi Gunny. She was very thorough and honest in her prognosis. Sadly, it was time for us to say goodbye to our best boi, the empathy & understanding she and her tech showed us as they prepared him for his voyage over the rainbow bridge will always be remembered by myself and my kiddos. There was no rush and were told we could wait until my son got there to say goodbye. Gunny was kept calm and his last moments were very peaceful & painfree.
Negative experience: We have taken our senior dog who is invited multiple times to this vet. When told she had been injured we were met with “she’s old. It’s arthritis” multiple times. Never did an X-ray, even when we specifically asked for one. On the last “appointment” they sent out a staff hand for a sales pitch on the hydro therapy. We’ve since taken the dog to another vet where the instantly saw that she was hurt, and started x rays. When the new vet office called big country, big country told them we failed to follow up after an appointment, which is a bold faced lie. Shameful treatment and behavior from Dr. Tracy Walker and the staff of big country vet.
Fantastic experience: We searched everywhere for a Dr to do an immediate cesarean delivery on Sadi May. Finally we found a Dr at Big Country veterinary clinic. Because of this office we still have our Sadi May. It was definitely scary trying to find someone to help with the cost and problems of getting funds , but they were very sweet with how we could withstand the surgery cost. But they do have plans to fill out that may be able to assist with cost arising from such a large process they have to go through. But just like they told us she came out fine and all five puppies were delivered. We did loose one but as the vet had told us this one may not be strong enough to survive. I appreciate the handling of our most precious babies to grow and for us to love them all. Thank you Big Country. From the Taylor Family
Fantastic experience: We are traveling across country and our 14 year old pug developed a cough. WE called and explained how Molly was and they said bring her in. Our vet tech Lindsey was fabulous!! I am hearing impaired and she took the time to speak clearly and explain what we needed to do..Dr walker is a diamond! She also took the time to explain Molly’s needs. I so wish I had a vet service like this in San Antonio!!! Thank you BIG COUNTRY VETERINARY CLINIC!!
Positive experience: I'm not sure what happened today at Big Country, but their customer service was not up to par. If they had an emergency, overbooked, or were short staffed, reschedule your appointments. We got there at our appointment time, called to check in, and was left sitting in 90+ heat for 30 min before we called and asked if we could wait inside. It was almost an hour after our appointment before we were seen. It's definitely not the same experience we had with Dr. Walker on our first visit. The vet assistant was pleasant. Dr. Archie seemed rushed and didn't spend much time with either pets. It would have been nice to have an apology for making us wait so long or a discount on the fees, considering we paid over $300 for both my dog and cat. Please do better next time or reschedule as we drive 50 min one way with two stressed pets
Fantastic experience: We had to leave our daughters little dog, Tumbles, here for several days, he is old and had never been away from his owner and had never been crated. They sent us and pics and texts everyday, morning and evening, so we could see he was doing fine. They gave us such peace of mind and were so nice, a great place to leave your pet and have no worries. Sue Dodson
Fantastic experience: Very trusted Vet clinic. Love how great they are with all my fur babies. I have purebred Boston Terriers. Always take great care of my Boston Terriers. They take great care of your pets
Fantastic experience: Thank you to the wonderful staff and doctors. It only took an over night visit to get my canine back to her normal happy health after a scare.
Negative experience: They are decent vets but they lack the common courtesy of being transparent in their pricing. You can go in expecting to pay less than $100 and get a bill for over $300. These issues personify everything wrong with a broken healthcare system and apparently it is now also a problem at the vet. Unfortunately, there is no current law requiring veterinary office to be more up front about pricing. It is sad because we have been generally pleased with the treatment they have provided but poor customer service policies have tarnished that. Word of advice, demand to see the potential bill before consenting to anything. You shouldn’t have to ask for that but apparently you do.
