Companion Pet Clinic: Reviews
Fantastic experience: The people that work there are really nice it's very comfortable atmosphere
Fantastic experience: Well informed after my second visit.
Fantastic experience: Friendly, knowledgeable staff.
Barbara, Thank you for the kind words. What a great picture of Woody. Those eyes!- Vicki
Fantastic experience: Nice staff. My nervous pups were put at easy by them. They took great care of my dogs and cat and were very informative.
Fantastic experience: Staff r friendly,Dr. are too. They treat u like part of the family. Reasonable Vet prices.
Fantastic experience: Very happy with the service received dog is getting better
Negative experience: I had a nasty neighbor that shot my cat in the butt with a BB gun. I saw a female dr at this clinic and I was not able to file my civil case against this man because of a female Dr there that said she didn't believe me that my cat was shot with a gun. Later on when i filed a restraining order against this man he openly admitted in court that he did shoot them. She wrote down in her notes that it was a cat fight which it absolutely was NOT. So she lied in her charting and shes a Dr!!!!! Her license should be taken away. This evil man admitted to shooting both of my cats in a hearing when I filed for a restraining order so this dr absolutely ruined my case and I will never be able to get justice because she said i was lying and protected and abuser. I'll never go back and neither should you if you're reading this. This was a dangerous doctor protecting an abusive man who hurts animals. HEED MY WARNINGS ⚠️
Fantastic experience: First time customer. Verified that the information provided(records, doctors number, name of facility, background information that would bring the doctor up to speed) does not get obtained by Companion. They will not reach out to the surgeon or pet doctor to confirm prior reason for the visit. Again, this was MY experience. The lab coat male that I spoke with..was unwilling to do anything during the visit. ..until I informed them I can get the surgeon on the phone and they can let the lab coat male know what NEEDED to be done for the wellbeing of the animals current situation. After 20 minutes of deliberating, no customer should have to make choices like going to an "all you can eat" buffet. The customer needs to be informed of the best option the facility has chosen for the immediate situation that is in the best nature of the animal(s). Now for the positive stuff..wonderful staff, hard to hear when they talk down at the counter while the customer is above them standing while the staff is sitting. Very quick..time make take several hrs for a call back to be seen, but such is life.
Fantastic experience: They did everything they could to save our old pup. Unfortunately she was to sick but ill forever be taking my other dogs and cat to them here on out.
Fantastic experience: Went in for a general exam, and nail clipping. Had a great experience with the staff. All of which were very nice, professional, and accommodating to our nervous kitty. We’d love if we could book an appointment ahead of time, I’m sure they have their reasons but overall a great clinic. Will be coming back in the future
Fantastic experience: I always trust Companion Pet Clinic to take care of my pets
Fantastic experience: Customer service is great and they are great with animals and I will keep retuning to them
Fantastic experience: My almost 10 year old chiweenie needed teeth pulled and these folks treated her with love and compassion. She showed no fear nor cowering. The atmosphere was pleasant and staff were very nice and upbeat. I will be taking my others dogs in to see them as well.
Thank you for your kind review Channy. We always strive to provide the best care and environment for our patients and clients. We truly appreciate your acknowledgement of this.

Fantastic experience: We had to put our sweet kitty down suddenly after returning from vacation to find her very sick. The staff at Companion Pet Clinic were super friendly and professional, and they were so great about getting my kitty on the schedule. When they put my sweet kitty to sleep they were so very compassionate and caring.
Fantastic experience: We recently brought our dog, Brodie, in for surgery, and I can’t thank Dr. Mill and the entire team enough for their outstanding care and compassion. From the warm and helpful front desk staff to the skilled and caring veterinary team – everyone went above and beyond. Dr. Mill took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure Brodie received the best possible care. They treated him with so much love and attention, and truly made a very stressful experience much easier for us. The pricing was also very fair, especially considering the high quality of care. We felt like they treated Brodie as if he were their own. Thank you, Dr. Mill and team, for your kindness, professionalism, and excellent service. We are so grateful!
Negative experience: I was REFERRED by 2 places... go take your cat there. I messaged as to set up the situation if was given- 1st thing was a phone call-- I returned it to be met with an attitude. I said my name and she just started to SPEAK and when I interrupted her? Yeah she got her next person- I was told was her supervisor but it wasn't...I was dumped on someone else- I started my story again? She just wouldn't let GO of something that had NOTHING to do with getting us to the solution which is a cat in need-- then told me to go find someone else because I DIDN'T want a call back from an actual supervisor.... I need my cat that had set funds ready for THIS SITUATION... but these ladies just cannot get beyond their own selves and LISTEN to the customer-- get what you HAVE to have and go from there.... so sad
I apologize if you were not given the correct information on how our clinic works by your "referrals". We do not have saved spots for any "Referrals), nor do we take walk ins. We do have a list of pets (all in need) that we see each day. To get on this list, you must call same day at 7:30 am (or 9:30 am on Sunday) and keep redialing until you get through. Most days we fill up by 8:30am. As far as the interactions with the staff, I have talked with both receptionists about the situation. They have never received a complaint from a client before. I know you are concerned about your pet but, we do have the right to refuse service to anyone and when a manner of civility cannot be maintained by a potential client, we will ask them to go elsewhere. I hope you are able to get the care your pet needs at another facility.
Vicki, Practice Manager
Fantastic experience: Knowledgeable, kind, and affordable! They take great care of my mature guinea pigs and I'm very grateful!
Thank you Christy! We all work very hard for our patients and clients and it is very appreciated to hear these kind words.

Negative experience: Grieving and Deeply Disappointed On April 30th, I brought my beloved cat to Companion Pet Clinic because she wasn’t acting like herself. She was distant, lethargic, and clearly not well. I voiced my concerns, hoping for real answers and compassionate care. Instead, I was presented with a quote for X-rays, blood work, and fluids — but with no explanation as to why any of those were being recommended. I asked for advice, for guidance, but got none. Just a vague suggestion that she was “probably just dehydrated.” No real urgency. No clarity. No reassurance. Just a surface-level dismissal of what, deep down, I knew was something serious. Today is May 3rd. Just three days later, I’m sitting on the floor with her lifeless body in my arms. She wasn’t just dehydrated. She was dying. And now she’s gone. I am absolutely heartbroken. She was more than a pet — she was family. I trusted this clinic to take her symptoms seriously, to help us understand what was happening, to show some level of care. Instead, I walked away confused and falsely reassured. Now all I have is grief and the heavy weight of “what if.” If you ever feel like something is wrong with your animal, please trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to push for answers — even when the professionals downplay it. I only wish I had done more, spoken louder, asked harder questions. Companion Pet Clinic failed her — and they failed me. I hope no other pet parent has to feel this kind of pain because their concerns were brushed aside.
Brian,
First off, I want to offer my condolences for the loss of your beloved pet. I know that this review is born out of a need to blame someone else for this outcome, but I do feel I need to point out some inaccuracies in your review. When your pet came into our clinic on 4/30/25, she had been lethargic, not eating well and vomiting for 2-4 days. Our doctor did mention dehydration but that was merely an observation from the examination. She recommended bloodwork and x-rays to aid in a diagnosis and supportive care including anti-nausea medication and subcutaneous fluids for the dehydration and vomiting. All of which you declined. You did schedule a technician visit to do those things the following day and you were a no-show for that appointment. Again, I am sorry for this very sad outcome. We wish we could have provided the recommended treatment for your pet.
Take care,
Vicki

Fantastic experience: The staff at Companion Pet Clinic are always super friendly and helpful. They are the only ones we trust with our bunnies. Dr. Mills has seen all of our past and current bunnies and all of them are relaxed and well-behaved with him. Recommend them for any of your pets, but definitely exotics.
Fantastic experience: Compassionate and friendly. Affordable cremation.
Fantastic experience: This is a great clinic, they know how to take care of our pets. They do great work, I want you all working there to know I appreciate you more than you know.
Thank you Tyler. We appreciate you!
-Vicki
Negative experience: Changing my review of this place, things have always been hard here but usually reasonable but over the last year or so ridiculous. I have been going there for more years than I can count with multiple animals and the whole system of calling the morning of to get an appointment is absolutely ridiculous, Not to mention harmful for pets. 9 times out of 10, you cannot get in, and they'll just refer you to an emergency vet for something that isn't even an emergency but that does need to be seen, thats why I have a vet so I dont waste time/ reasources and hundres of dollars that I dont have for minor issues. Definitely, no loyalty to long-term clients. No thought to the needs of the animals or if an animal is uncomfortable or in pain, it's oh well your buisness is replaceable find somewhere else to go. Depending on who you get on the phone you may or may not get what you need. At this point I am willing to pay more to have my pet seen when it needs seen and by someone who gives a damn.
Tosha, I understand your frustration but we aren't able to see all the patients and clients that want to come in. We do give priority to our established clients. We only have 2 doctors and there is a nationwide shortage of veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians. We are not an emergency clinic or an urgent care facility so that is why we refer to those businesses if we are not able to get your pet seen. I hope this helps to shed some light on the situation. It honestly hurts us for you to say that we don't care.
Fantastic experience: Easier to call, got right in early. Staff were sweet to my dog. Several told me she did really good. Meds really helped with spinal pain
Fantastic experience: This place is top notch service and empathetic care for animals. I truly genuinely recommend this place. They respond even thru texts! Great , kind staff and thorough DR.'s
Positive experience: Companion is definitely the most affordable vet in Salem. My pets have never been mis-diagnosed or mistreated here, and everyone working here has been very kind, especially on the phone which is impressive given the call volume they must have when they open. However, with my recent experience here I was left feeling that you are mostly getting what you pay for, and I would really encourage anyone who goes here and thinks they might need a second opinion, to get that second opinion. I ended up having to take my kitten to VCA Animal Clinic on River Rd because the prescription that Companion gave us wasn't having any positive effect. Had I stuck it out and gone back to Companion again for a third time (initial visit for kitty's URI, back for an eye infection, back *again* when eye drops weren't working), I would have ended up spending the same amount as VCA's exam fee anyways. I found as well that VCA was a much cleaner facility and they paid a lot of attention to making sure my cat stayed away from any areas other animals might come into contact with, since he was infectious.
Fantastic experience: They were great. Got our dog I. Quick and found the problem and got it taken care of quickly and pretty inexpensive for what it was.
Negative experience: They just want your money. Brought my cat in because he was vomiting profusely for 2 days and wasn’t eating or drinking. Their basic physical check charge is $150, and the First Lady I saw said that they want to do an ultrasound which will cost around $100. Not too bad since I was expecting something like that. However, after waiting 3 hours, the vet finally comes in and says they couldn’t even get an ultrasound on my cat because he didn’t want his stomach touched. Which cat wants their stomach touched by a vet?!?! She proceeds to tell me that he could be vomiting for so many reasons, and lists off the same stuff I read online earlier that day, and that they need to test him for all those reasons to figure it out. The price of just one of those tests was going to be over $1000. And that is just the testing. I ask what happens after they test him and what the treatment looks like. They say it depends on what they find. But they will likely prescribe him a simple diet and need him to be monitored. Luckily it was 11:00pm and I was sick, so I said give me my cat I want to go home and go to bed. They tell me they will give him some fluids and a nausea medication. They bring me my cat saying I couldn’t give him the fluids, but we got him the nausea meds in the butt instead of where we usually put them, in the nape. I’m only down $220, so it wasn’t that bad, and I go home. I wake up in the morning and monitor my cat all day, and he stopped vomiting and is a happy cat since. They did nothing and I am happy I didn’t spend any money on their stupid tests that they probably couldn’t even do. Because they are inexperienced vets who can’t handle a common cat who doesn’t like needles and his stomach jabbed by strange vets. Update: My cat is perfectly fine btw
Bryan, please remove this review for Companion Pet Clinic as you reviewed the wrong veterinary facility. We are not open at 11pm and certainly do not have any tests that cost $1000. We are lower cost facility and our exam is $54. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: So glad of their set up to get an appt. here. People on a budget may not get their animals seen if it isn't for the way they make appointments. Other places either tell you they are a few weeks out or you have to go to an ER vet. So thankful for this place. My favorite is Dr. Mills. He is very kind and caring every time I bring a pet in. Been taking my fur babies here for at least 5+ years.
Fantastic experience: The doctors and staff at Companion Pet Clinic North are amazing and very caring to families who have pets. The staff is professional, kind and passionate to really care for pets in general. We are grateful to have them in our community
Negative experience: I called them several times @ the time they told me 2 call them back, I called them so I could get my cat fixed, well every time I called, no answer, they only picked up twice & I was put on a waiting list twice, & I called @ the right time like they told me 2 do bit they never answered their phones, if u want good business answer your phones like ur support 2 do, or no 1 will b able 2 call & get in, I had cash 4 them 2 fix my cat I guess they didn't want the cash or a good customer willing 2 spend money, "NOT" a good place 2 go 4 ur pets u "WON'T" get in & they "WONT" pick their phone or phones up when need be
Fantastic experience: I just freakin’ love this place! Our pets, 2 cats, are our babies, just like any other family feels, and when they don’t feel good, NE Companion Pet Clinic acts like it’s their family, or some celebrity in need! I love this treatment! I walk in and feel like royalty. I literally “NameDrop” to my over 8k followers on TikTok like I have a special thing going with Hollywood! Most important, we have no idea what we are doing, and they always explain everything to us, in plain terms for us to understand. That’s what ABOVE & BEYOND customer service looks like! The only way they could do better, is to order us a limo and bring out a red carpet! We appreciate all of this! Thank you, I know we are not special, but it’s nice to feel special!
Negative experience: North salem clinic. Is the worst one ever do NOT go. The lady we had a convo with today. Was so dam rude. NO sympathy. i guarantee i wont recommend this company to nobody. We called the desk at 8:12am 12 /26/2024. Took 9 trys to get someone. Id rather she didnt awnser. But now you know.. again this was the north salem clinic. Stop going here.
Negative experience: Used to be great but has gone down hill. I've been going to Companion Pet Clinic since 2019 and in the last few years it's really gotten bad. This last visit was the icing on the cake, it had to be rescheduled because they gave me the wrong time to bring my dog back in for blood work, I was told two hours and as I was heading back they called me to tell me it was too late. Then at the appointment my dog had the first round of blood work done and was brought out to me covered in her own feces, then I was informed the bill would be $100 more than it was last year, which i hadn't planned for and when I asked if we could do a payment plan, something I'd been able to do in previous tight situations, the woman I was speaking with was very rude claiming they've never done payment plans, I asked if we could reschedule since I couldn't pay the full amount that day and she told me it'd be "too much work" for them to do it again. Today I asked for a refill on my dogs prescription through their text and recived the message I've added in photos. My dogs name is Maxie, SHE had been going there for over a year at this point. Edit: Since Vicki has chosen to reply to my review with another lie. I did in fact offer to pay part of the bill that day & asked if I could pay the rest that following week. Which Vicki said no to. I also tried to go through scratchpay and was denied. Which I told Vicki, so I'm unsure why she is claiming I denied scratchpay. As for working "a long time" with my aggressive pet, it wasn't but maybe 15 mins each time they took her back. She was both sedated & had a muzzle on.
"Robyn", Unfortunately, we do need to receive payment for our services and you didn't offer to pay anything that day after we worked along time with your aggressive pet to get the blood drawn. We do not have any payment plans other than care credit or scratch pay which you declined. Since your dog is aggressive, I have to consider my staff's safety. Going forward, I hope you will be upfront about your financial situation so the clinic can plan accordingly. - Vicki
Negative experience: This place was my favorite vet in all of Salem. It’s a shame if what it’s come to since Covid and how it treats even it’s most senior clients. Used them for years. The call in system is a joke for patients who are established and need care. To be told to wait and just take a chance to get seen if you are lucky is ridiculous. You operated on my dog’s nose. He has respiratory issues. Who else better to address them? But nope. Can’t be seen. No one there cares. Just try calling every day til you can get in. Doesn’t matter if your dog can’t breathe. What a joke. Not even good for urgent care like they say. Cause. Well. Gotta chance getting in for that, too. When did you all stop caring about animals under your care? The Covid excuse doesn’t work anymore. Obviously something isn’t working. And your system is it.
Hi Jenifer, I am concerned by your review. I am not sure what you are referring to. Please reach out to me directly at 503-588-1603 if there is a concern you have. Thank you,
Vicki, Practice Manager
Fantastic experience: Great vet service helpful staff over the phone and in person! I called to get my dog seen but they were booked for the day but they put me on the cancelation list for same day service and I was fortunate to get a call back due to a cancelation so I was seen the same day. They saw my dog and before treating they gave me a list of options with pricing and tried to help with options to save some money, it was my first visit to a vet for years and I was pleased that it was affordable to get my dog seen and diagnosed. Would recommend to anyone for their pets
Fantastic experience: The staff at companion are the most wonderful caring and kind people that I have dealt with in a very long time. They bent over backwards to work with us when my cat was fatally injured. And their kindness and compassion when we had to put him down was amazing. They really do go above and beyond for you and your pet. Sadly our baby to be put down but they made everything as easy and it's painless as they possibly could. Also the people they use for their cremations are amazing and compassionate people that need to be mentioned also when I got my baby back he was in a beautiful little box and not just a bag. Honestly both companion pet clinic and having heavenly wings cremation are amazing and well worth every penny that we ended up spending their. I would never recommend any other vet than these guys.
Fantastic experience: I really appreciate all the love and care you all gave my Al'Over!! Even though he did not make it you guys still tried and helped. For that I'm grateful and thankful. Have a good year guys....
Fantastic experience: What a great group of people that legitimately care about your fur babies. They offer same day appointments. However, you need to start calling @ 7:30am. I got the recorded message a couple of times before I finally talked to someone to get on the schedule for the same day. They fill up their schedule very quickly. If you call after 8am and get through. They will offer an option to get on a standby list. ***Please note --I recommend that you clear your day for your pet. Because, when they call. You have a certain time window to get there to be seen. One more thing... Don't be a jack wagon!! Remember, they are helping you.
Positive experience: They were so amazing and compassionate when I needed to put my elderly dog to sleep. They even sent me a beautiful hand written card!
Fantastic experience: They allow me to buy my cats C/d food in both wet and dry. Their prices are fair for both food and services and everyone is so friendly! They also occasionally have coupons for discounts on your food! 10/10 stars absolutely recommend! My only desire is that they're open on Fridays too! But everyone needs a break so it's completely understandable.
Fantastic experience: I know & see ppl are frustrated with calling and getting through to the office, but it's only because of how busy & popular Companion is. Being cheaper than other vets makes them super busy. What I do is call 1st thing in morning, as soon as they're open & have family do it too. That may help. If it's something that can't wait, I will pay extra $ to go to another vet. But these ppl at Companion are GREAT & are only human. So give them a break, they're doing there best to help everyone~
Positive experience: Well the office staff and the doctor are great it's crazy that they don't make appointments in advance. So those of us that work 8 hours a day and have noweekends available it doesn't work. You have to call at 8:00 a.m. and you just get busy, busy, busy and by the time you get through the appointments are all full for the day usually well before 9:00. And then if you're lucky they'll offer to put you on a waiting list and so then you hang out with your dog and can't do anything else hoping for a phone call that doesn't come. Unfortunately I've had to go to a different vet that cost more but I can make an appointment and know when I need to take my dog in. ** To your response, I do start calling early but get a busy single or no answer. Then still have to wait for a call back and jet to the office. I just don't get it, other vet offices leave space in the calendar for same day urgent appts. Thank goodness my puppy has been healthy so I will only be in once a year. Definitely won't be able to get a hold of you if it was an emergency.
Hi Weezy, I understand your frustration but if we were appointment based we would be booked out at least 3 or 4 weeks and unable to help pets same day. You actually should call at 7:30 am, not 8am and we are open on Saturday and Sunday, only closed on Friday. I hope that helps.
Fantastic experience: Took my pal Oliver the cat in to get some teeth pulled. Turns out he didn't need any pulled. The took great care of him. He is a happy and shady 14 year old
Fantastic experience: We love Dr. Arthur Mills and all his staff and veterinarians. He especially, has been a wonderful, caring, and understanding Dr. for many many years to our many animals. Appreciate you and your team in all you do. This veterinary place was, is, and will always be a popular place to bring your pets based on cost and affordability. With that said, due to popularity, availability can become minimal at times; which also can be overcome.♥️
Fantastic experience: We appreciate everyone that works at Pet Companion. We’ve taken all five of our dogs there over the past 15 years. The doctors are kind, patient and compassionate plus knowledgeable.
Fantastic experience: Needed a duck vet and Companion was the closest. I had a really compassionate experience, despite the unfavorable outcome of my situation. They even sent me a condolence card which I felt was above and beyond, such a thoughtful touch. Thank you to everyone at Companion ❤️
Positive experience: My only issue is the booking system, which sucks, but it doesn’t seem like they will change it. So here is my recommendation: If you have access to multiple phones, dial in from each one to at least double your chances of getting through. As soon as you hear the busy signal, hang up and redial. Do not wait. Because I have seen reviews where clients have been forgotten on hold, if I get placed on hold on one phone, I will keep trying to get through on the other. I will hold on both phones, until someone returns to one of the lines to assist. Doctor Mills always does amazing work, and the prices are very fair. My dog loves seeing the staff (until the thermometer comes out, lol). I have no problem trusting these people with my pets’ health. However, I have been late/missed work multiple times over the last 5 years to call in, on the chance I’ll actually get through the phone system in time, AND they have the availability to see my pets. Otherwise it’s a great place to bring your fuzzy friends.
Fantastic experience: The staff are always friendly and professional. You can tell they care about their patients and their owners. The text service is genius and so helpful!
Fantastic experience: I have always had an amazing experience with Companion! Dr Mills is wonderful and during a visit I had remembered that he cared for all my childhood pets (mice, cats and dogs) while I was growing up and now he cares for my cats and chameleons 20 years later! He was so on board with doing an exploratory surgery to look for ovarian remnant syndrome in my cat (causing her to frequently be attacked by my other cat) that I had been fighting to get treated for 3 years at other vets and he found exactly that and removed the pieces when no other vet was willing to listen! I truly hope he doesn’t plan to retire anytime soon because I have never had a better veterinarian! I highly recommend Companion! All the staff are caring and helpful and treat your pet like one of their own.
Negative experience: I brought both my rats in and was charged an exam fee for both. He only took one out and said my other didn't need to be checked. A week later my rat with his major problems he was dealing acted better for a day, then was dying and I had to take him somewhere else. He had over grown teeth to his mouth and started to lacerate the roof of it, tumors in his throat and a tumor on his foot. How was this missed? I'm broken and at least I know not to come back here. I have no trust for their professionalism on the vets part.
Hello Amelia, we are so sorry to hear about the passing of your fur-baby. We do have exam notes on both rats from when they we're here, and they both got medication though. Our doctor also did address the teeth and informed you that anesthesia would be required for further evaluation. Again we are so sorry to hear about the passing of your rat, and if you wish to discuss matters further please give us a call.
Fantastic experience: I had a great experience taking my boy here today, it was super busy to get through and we waited by the phone most of the day but the staff and Dr were Amazing and so caring and understanding. Very reasonably priced also! We will be returning customers for sure! Much more affordable!
Thank you for the kind words Allison. I know it can take some patience and persistence to get through, but our sign in process is one of the ways we are able to keep our prices so modest. - Vicki, Practice Manager
Fantastic experience: I’ve been going to this clinic for over 15 years and they have been great with all of our fur kiddos through the years. I went to the one on Market before this one opened. I recommend them to everyone. Thanks for taking care of our furry and non furry “Monkey” family members. ❤️
Positive experience: I had a 7 month old puppy that ended up getting a surgery here and she is doing better every day because of the most helpful staff and a very caring dr. If ever in salem, be sure to to stop in and donate and meet some of the most understanding ppl and know that ur pet is in great hands ...
Fantastic experience: Our beautiful domestic short hair tabby got very seek yes the waiting on the phone is nerve wrecking but omgerd Dr mills was awesome he answered all questions and concern we had he made us a reasonable rate for our baby the staff and Dr mills where very gentle with our fur baby we made him our vet I don't care about this other negative comments it's people we think it's incovience please stop being Karen's of the world we have enough them we don't need more if you love your pets you do anything to get them help so my recommendation is to go to companion pet clinic it's a great vet place we gonna bring our 3 month fur baby that we adopt to the clinic be kind be loving be patient love your fur babies as there your children and not just family pet ❤ ❤ ❤
Hi Theresa,
Thank you for all your kind words. I hope Lapis is feeling better now.
Vicki, Practice Manager
Fantastic experience: I've been taking my Chihuahua in since she was barely a year old. They've helped me with all her medical services for the last 5 ish years. Always try to get you in, are very nice, and help make sure you understand how procedures and costs are gonna be like. Also, I have had my dog since highschool and I know money can be tight sometimes, but I think their prices are reasonable and not too much. Dentals are pricey but very important and worth it
Fantastic experience: CPC does not charge excessive fees and they do not give you false hope. That said they are kind and compassionate with both you and your animals. The docs and techs are extremely knowledgeable. What you're getting here is honest, premium veterinary care without being up or overcharged. The waitlist system is somewhat inconvenient admittedly but I will take it any day. I can't recommend them enough.
Negative experience: I would rate zero if I could. It is nearly impossible to get your pet seen. They no longer take walk-ins and you can't schedule an appointment. They tell you to call at 7:30 a.m. to get on the list for the day; however, the line is continually busy. Seems like the phone is off the hook. I dialed and redialed 73 times (every minute on the minute) before they finally answered, just to be put on hold for a half hour. When the clerk came on the line I was told they were already booked for the day. How is that possible when you can't get through because the line is continually busy? I've been trying to get my cat in for 2 weeks. Ridiculous! What an absurd way of doing business. I'm going elsewhere and would recommend you all do the same.
Hi Yolanda, I am sorry you were not able to get your pet in to see us. I know it can be frustrating, but I assure you we are all answering calls as quickly as possible starting at 7:30 am. We have an extremely high call volume and we see as many pets as we are able to care for each day. I do recommend not waiting between calls, just keep hanging up and redialing immediately to have the best chance of getting through. I also recommend getting added to the "overflow" list for the day as we can often see additional patients from this list. If you have any other concerns or questions, please reach out to me directly at 503-588-1603.
Thank you,
Vicki- Practice Manager
Fantastic experience: They were so helpful and staff so nice. Puppy needed seen for an emergency, and they fit us in.
Hi Genon, thank you for the kind words. We are so glad Daisy has recovered well.
Fantastic experience: MAKE SURE YOU CALL BEFORE COMING DOWN AS S WALK IN!! Just a bit of a warning, things have changed. This is a great place for same-day appointments. Affordable. Thank you for helping my Wesley-cat!
Positive experience: My experience with Companion Pet is trying to get in...playing a phone game. Who's going to get through first to possibly get in that day. You can start a minute b4 and it's already busy. It's the stupidest way to do this. EVERY DAY you have to do this to get in for an exam you needed yesterday for your pet for a serious matter. Sure go to the Emergency Clinics and pay out a fortune you don't have. And Wilvet is only interested in MONEY. If I finally get in Companion Pet they're pretty good with my dogs. But you can't get in with their system. Tired of dialing and redialing and redialing TRYING to get a place in the clinic my dog so desperately needs. Is it worth it? It's frustrating!
Fantastic experience: Although it took a while to get through, they were able to get my Fluffster in within an hour of speaking to them. He had severe matting on his chest and belly which became infected. They were able to shave his mats (I was having difficulty trying to do this at home) without sedation. He was given topical medication for home. Fluff was purring throughout his exam. They even worked out payment plan with me. Great place to take your pets.
Fantastic experience: My mom and I have been bringing all of my pets in here for over 15 years. Getting through in the morning is fixed, during the pandemic it was harder but everyone was doing their best. They saved my cat Bella's life when her stomach was ripped opened and charged hundreds of dollars less than the overnight emergency vet wanted to charge us. When we had our cat Tiger put down there they waved every fee possible including examination fees. Last time I took my dog in they were very sweet with her. Each vet we've seen here has been very kind
Fantastic experience: They made it evident that they care about our pets. They were recommended to me by a friend when I was telling them about the vet we had been going to and so far, they have shown it's more about the well being of our animals than their pocket book.
Fantastic experience: I can not thank them enough for taking such awesome care of my girl when she broke her paw. It was such a stressful time and they definitely helped ease my stress level about it all! I will be forever thankful for them and all their generosity!
Fantastic experience: I called from 7:30am-7:38am and was able to get through and my kitty was seen same day. The staff was super polite and kind. I really appreciate how they are not judgmental and didn’t ask unnecessary questions. Definitely will be bringing my kitty back if I need to. Prices are reasonable.
Fantastic experience: Love this vet office for all my pet needs including reptiles. The staff is great and even though having to call first thing in the morning can seem inconvenient to get seen that day. I actually find it much better then waiting for hours in a crowded waiting room so great job guys for coming out of the COVID faze better then you went into it
Fantastic experience: Top notch vets, they see the worst and are very good at what they do. Took great care of our old female cat that was basically on hospice while we were at work. Mended our other cats broken front leg years ago, diagnosed our other cat with food allergies and fixed him right up on the proper diet. Would recommend 100%
Fantastic experience: Companion Pet Clinic went above and beyond for our Hedgehog, Boba today. The staff was incredible and the Dr. Was, too. I can't say enough good things about this Clinic. I will most definitely use them again for any of my exotic and other animals. Thank you a million times for the kindness and compassion you showed our precious family member and the humans that I had in tow.
Negative experience: I went here for years and was happy with their services and staff but now I’ll never go back because of the office manager. The only other downside to this clinic, which is also a very handy and helpful feature as well, is that it’s first come, first serve, so sometimes it’s hard to get in to see the veterinarian. It is sad for my pets because Dr. Mills is a WONDERFUL and caring veterinarian that does anything he can, within reason, to help out and make sure all parties involved are taken care of. We had a knee surgery repair (not the TPLO, just cruciate repair) scheduled for one of my dogs, I signed a paper that stated payment was due in full at the time of service. The quote I signed when we finally scheduled surgery (which was 2 weeks out) was actually the second quote I’d received, the first one was never emailed to me so when I called to follow up on that I was told how much it was and then they were perplexed why it wasn’t emailed to me. The second quote was also $100 more expensive than the first one. The day before surgery I got a call confirming the appointment, and informing me their policy was to get a “deposit in the amount of the high end of the estimate”. I refused because I was paying in cash and was going to be paying when I brought the dog in, this had been discussed and no one mentioned needing to put money down ahead of time. When I questioned why what I signed was saying something different than what I was hearing now the answer I got was that it’s their policy and if I don’t put the deposit down 24 hours ahead of time, they will need to cancel the surgery. Which is exactly what they did. So, Dr. Mills probably has no idea that happened unless he reads this review, my dog still has a ruptured ACL, apparently it’s ok and he will learn to live with it no problem, but my issue is with being told one thing and then something completely different was happening. If you choose to go here, just make sure you keep your paperwork.
Hi Shauna, What we actually discussed was needing the payment at least by the time the patient is dropped off in the morning before surgery. You had wanted to pay later in the day which is why we were not able to perform surgery that day on Alphonse. We do have to have the payment prior to surgery starting (this is Dr. Mill's protocol). I hope Alphonse is doing better.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Mills is amazing. He is very familiar with sighthounds. I took my 2.5 year old Silken Windhound in for a ovariectomy and there was a slight complication with her spay. This turned it into a much longer experience and he expressed so much care for my girl. I 100% know that she was in the best hands. He has also called to check in on her twice since the appointment and she is doing great.
Negative experience: My young Rotty was having some issues standing so I took him in, the second I entered the building the lady behind the desk immediately started shouting at me to the effect of I couldn’t bring that kind of dangerous breed into their clinic. I was horrified. Had to carry by boy back outside and find another clinic, I would highly recommend never using this place they are terrible people.
Hi Alex, I am sorry you had such a bad experience but I am a bit confused. We see many Rottweilers here and would never refuse to see a pet based on it's breed. I would definitely like to speak with you regarding this matter and make sure it was Companion Pet Clinic in North Salem that you are referring to as we are also not in the habit of shouting at our clients. Please give me a call at 503-588-1603. I hope your boy is dong better.
Vicki, Practice Manager.
Negative experience: Brought my cats, dogs, and even a chicken in since 2019. It’s pretty hard to get same day appointments anywhere in Salem so they were convenient. Seems like high turnover with vets. Staff seemed super burned out. Great experience with dr mills but doc Finley is thumbs down. When I complained they told me to find another vet. Sad ending to a four year relationship.
Positive experience: I've been using this place for over 20 years. Dr Mills is great. The only downside is trying to get through the phone lines before they run out of slots for the day. Last go round I hit redial 151 times before I got through. 9 minutes later and I got the last slot for the day.
Negative experience: We had tried many times to call them and yet the lines would get disconnected every single time! You’re suppose to call earlier before they even open to schedule you in. They told me the exact same information when I talked to them face to face. It’s obvious that whatever system they have is clearly not working. We told them that our cat has been vomiting and she is registered at companion. They told us that they purged our files. We followed their protocol and yet we could not receive help. I would highly recommend not wasting your time, money, effort, and your pets life to this place.
Negative experience: Dysfunctional system. We were told that they only do same day services- no appointments. Told me to call at 9:30 on Saturday, I called several times and each call I made was disconnected. We go in and they tell us they’re booked for the day, and try calling again tomorrow. I asked what we should do if the calls disconnect again, and they said to just keep calling??? There was another costumer speaking to the other receptionist at the front desk expressing that he’s been calling and unable to reach them for weeks. They are inaccessible.
Fantastic experience: They are awesome! Takes a few times to get ahold of someone if you're new. But once they know you, they are fast! Clean too. The receptionists were outstanding.
Negative experience: I would make this a zero star review if i could. We have been going to this clinic for years, however, they are no longer a walk-in clinic. They're using covid as an exuse to gouge people. They charge $90 for a walk in exam and $45 for an exam after they have called you into the clinic from a wait list. This policy discriminates against people who don't have a car. It is unfair to expect that everyone can drive to the clinic with their animals on demand. They also don't make appointments, so those of us without cars are essentially forced to pay the doubled fee. Although they accommodated me because I complained about the price gouging; they proceeded to tell me how I should be grateful that they didn't gouge me... Ummm, what?!?! All I am saying is: Do not advertise yourself as a Drop in clinic when that isn't what you are! If you have a check-in and call back service, then be clear about the process and fees for showing up in person online and on your phone system messages. We showed up expecting a wait, not to be told we must come back later after we are called. After posting this review and the manager replied below, they proceeded to leave my cat sitting in his own urine long enough that his soft sided carrier is soaked with it!!!! You can now add negligence to their long list of offenses. If you care about your animal go somewhere else!!!
Alina, I am very confused by your comments. Not only did we not charge you our $90 emergency exam (which is normally reserved for actual emergencies), we gave you preferential treatment to be seen yesterday even though we were already full for the day, and we still have your pet under care. We do not discriminate against anyone. Instead, we are simply keeping things fair by adhering to our protocols. Our current system works best for the majority of our clientele as they prefer to wait at home instead of the noisy and chaotic lobby. I realize this system may not work for everyone, but there are many other clinics available that schedule appointments or even come to your home. Maybe one of those would fill your needs better.
Vicki
Negative experience: We have brought our dog here for years. Dealing with the call in system can be frustrating, but I thought that it was just the reality of current things, until today. Today I called repeatedly (dial, hang up, hit redial, repeat) from 7:00 am. Got an answer finally at 8:46, to be told there was one caller ahead of me, and asked to hold. I waited for an hour and 10 mins. before I got through to be told, coldly, that there were no open spots for the day. The entire time I waited I listened to recordings of all the services the clinic offers, and how much they care. Suggestion, if they indeed care, at all, about our pets; why not just put a recording of the fact that there are no more spots open for the day into the beginning of the recording, so that pet owners could, instead of waiting endlessly, hang up and try to find a vet that could actually help them.
Hi Terry, I know the call-in process can be very frustrating. We simply cannot handle the volume of calls that we get. I just wanted you to know that we are brainstorming on better ways we can service our clientele and patients and your suggestion is noted and appreciated.
Vicki
Fantastic experience: My kitty had an injury that we were worried might become infected because he kept ripping it open. His throat was bleeding all the time. It took 3 days to get him in and it's RIDICULOUS that a clinic requiring by phone appointments on a first call first served basis don't have a hold line. I called 60+ times and kept getting a Verizon service message about the phone being busy. If we have to call to make an appointment and you can only make so many, at least have a que so its not entirely luck based. The vet did well with my kitty, gave him meds and they did help, but had it been life threatening it would have been a horrible wait time.
Hi Angela, I am glad your kitty was able to get taken care of. I know it can be frustrating to get through on the phone and we are always trying to improve our systems and protocols. The Verizon messages are due to a very high call volume (we've been told). It is best to just keep hanging up and calling back until you get through. We only have 2 doctors and it is impossible to help all the clients and patients that are seeking out our care. We wish we could help more, truly! Please keep in mind that we are a general practice and are only able to take a few urgent cases. There are emergency practices in the area that are better suited for more emergent needs. We would never expect you to put off care for anything critical. I hope this helps to explain. Please feel free to call me at the clinic if you would like to discuss further. 503-588-1603

Fantastic experience: The staff was every friendly and helpful. Companion clinic is a call first astonishment which makes getting your pet seen rather difficult but the Doctors are very caring. If you have a sick pet I don't think there is any better place to have them examined.
Negative experience: I liked this vet when I went there the first couple of times; they were the only vet in town that scheduled my dog for a spay in a reasonable amount of time. HOWEVER when they spayed her they shaved her entire underside and they must not have cleaned their clippers because she ended up with a skin infection. Tried to take her back in so they could help her and all they did was ask me to send a photo of the rash. I sent the photo and heard nothing for the rest of the week, tried to call MULTIPLE times and was put on the wait list and never got a call back for several days (all the while the rash is getting worse). All they did was tell me to get an e-collar, which I did. fast forward to three weeks later and its now turned into an oozing wound that I will have to go to an expensive pet ER for. They say to call at 7:30 to get an appointment, but I kid you not, I called 100 times from 7:30-8:30 and got a busy signal every time. I am usually an understanding person, but this is unacceptable. I won’t be going back to this clinic.
Positive experience: The only complaint I have is getting in to get seen. When you do get through to someone, you get a estimated time to come in. I have a toddler and now a newborn baby and I don't have the option of waiting all day for a maybe appointment. Aside from that, WHEN and IF you can get in, the staff is amazing. We took our dog here last summer who was improperly diagnosed by another vet for mastitis and saved her life. Given the circumstances and going back and forth between them and the emergency vet at night, with medications, and 2 surgeries it was only about 3500 for a week and a half of care.
Fantastic experience: They have taken care of my kitty since I moved to Salem 6 years ago. I love their compassion, the way everything is explained, the professionalism, I could list things forever. My cat is about to turn 16, and he has a clean bill of health. Companion helps keep him this way. They truly love animals.
Fantastic experience: I love my pets coming here. Have gone thru this vet a few times over the years. They are so friendly and kind. Even on the phone they are informative. Usually a high call volume though.
Fantastic experience: The people at companion pet clinic are AMAZING, they treated out cat Piper like one of their own. They were right on with our cats diagnosis and after 15 minutes we were on our way, it's been almost 3 weeks since our visit and she's a completely different cat. Thank you Companion Pet Clinic
Fantastic experience: Companion pet clinic I have only gone twice in my life to this place as an emergency and all I have to say is very convenient. when it is time and you have an emergency with your pet this is the best place you can take him and let them take care of your pet when it comes to it. I would recommend this place because of the time specially, when your pet needs to seek emergency help this place will do as best it can to help your pet at any means at any time and hours they offer. the hours they work is the most convenient thing they have going on compared to other pet clinics.
Negative experience: This place is a literal joke. They tell you to call first thing, depending on the day, to get an appointment which today happened to be Sunday. So I call at 9:30 like I was instructed to do. The line is busy so of course I keep trying. I FINALLY get through to a person at 10:10am after calling 32 times, only to be placed on hold for another 15 minutes. I also sent an email thinking maybe the phone was just off the hook and they hadn’t noticed since they were technically “open”. When someone finally gets to the phone she tells me they’re booked up already and said to me “oh honey people call hundreds of times doesn’t mean they get an appointment”. Then she hung up on me after I started to express my frustration and worry for my dog. I will never recommend this place to anyone or ever come back. My dog was having an allergic reaction which didn’t show cause for an ER trip but she definitely needed to seen. I called yesterday and told them what was going on so they were aware of how severe her reaction was. No compassion was shown or even care for my animal. Save yourself the stress and time by going somewhere else.
Hi Dana, I hope your pet has been taken care of and is doing well. While I understand your frustration and concern for your pet, please keep in mind we are a general practice, not an emergency facility. We can only see so many pets in a day. I wish you would have thought to discuss your concerns with me directly, but please know that I will be discussing the "lack of compassion" concern with the staff, as I never want any client to feel that way. It is frustrating for us as well when we cannot assist all the clients that are requesting care. Fortunately, we have 2 emergency clinics in the area to service the more urgent cases if we are unable. If you would like to discuss things further, please reach out to me at 503-588-1603.
Sincerely,
Vicki Hooper, Practice Manager
Fantastic experience: Horrible to call morning of, but exotic pet vet is now available a lot more hours! Staff are knowledgeable and caring, but could work on communicating better amongst themselves and with customers. Dr. Mills is thorough and listens to the pet owners concerns. Great overall experience!
Negative experience: Been coming here for years but as much as I love the dr’s the clinic has just gone downhill. It’s nearly impossible to get a appointment because they say to call 7:30 so when you do you wait 10 mins on hold while they take other calls then you have to wait and hope you get in next and they won’t do appointments for the next day for those who couldn’t get in. Wouldn’t waist your time with this clinic. Very unprofessional and extremely over priced. Edit: You are far from professional but keep telling yourself that.
Hi Crystal, I am sorry that you feel we haven't served you well. We have always been a "same day" clinic, meaning we do not schedule appointments. Unfortunately, with the increased demand for veterinary care since Covid started and the national shortage of veterinarians and credentialed veterinary technicians, we have limited availability. I know this does not help, but I do hope it sheds some light on why it is more difficult to get an examination for your pet with us. As far as being "extremely over priced", I can assure you we are one of the most affordable clinics around. I wish you all the best at your next clinic and hope your pets stay happy and healthy.

Fantastic experience: **** I had just recently saw a review by someone saying they saw on Facebook that Dr Mills was reapeatidly beating a dog and picking it up by its neck. I find this hard to believe. I have been going to Mills for 12 years and have NEVER seen any thing but love and compassion for my dogs. I believe that is a false post**** Friendly staff, Love Doctor Mills and Williams. However it is a long wait but that tells you something, they are a pretty good veterinarian. I wouldn't take my animals anywhere else.
Thank you for your kind words Connie.
Fantastic experience: My hamster was in bad shape and they got him in and figured out what was wrong and he is on his way to getting better without breaking the bank. Its not easy to put a bunch of into a rodent that only has around a two year life span but we are attached and he is family. Dr Mills took great care of him and we couldn't be happier. Thank you so much!!
Fantastic experience: Today was my first day. The people are super chill and the doctor is very knowledgeable. Best prices ever! Thanks for not being one of those really greedy clinics that charge a arm and leg for your services.
Fantastic experience: We have been going to Companion for years and every single time have experienced fantastic care. Finding an exotic animal vet, especially one who can treat birds, is difficult, but Dr. Mills is wonderful. Not only is he kind, patient, and extremely knowledgeable, but he goes above and beyond. My daughter had a pet quail who needed surgery a few years ago and she was very worried. Dr. Mills called the evening before the surgery to answer any questions she had and to put her mind at ease. We have seen multiple other vets as well and they were all professional and compassionate. I have also appreciated the office staff who I know has to deal with customers who are stressed and emotional and sometimes frustrated because it can be difficult to get in for an appointment. In spite of that they are friendly and empathetic. Having taken dogs, cats, birds, a bearded dragon, and a ball python in to this clinic over the years, we have always been satisfied. I cannot recommend them enough.
Fantastic experience: I've been very happy with how much the vet and the staff care about my cat.
Fantastic experience: The vets and techs are professional and attentive, and gave me time to ask all my questions. I was very grateful for the "first come, first served" appointment style. I just moved and I have been having a really hard time finding vets that are taking new patients or that aren't booked out for weeks. This clinic made it possible for me to get my geriatric kitty in for an exam before I start my new job.
Fantastic experience: This vet I recommend. There’s a lot of heart in each and everyone of these staff members. The DR is outstanding. I feel they truly care about your pet, and deserve a 5 star. I wish I would of known about them sooner. You can rest assured your pets will be in good hands, and cared for, and you will be treated like family. I will be taking all my pets here. Thank you for your hospitality. Louie, thanks you!
Thank you so much.
Fantastic experience: So, these guys worked by walk in only pre-pandemic but they had to change things up and have customers call in a half hour before they opened. It's a struggle to get through because the barrage of other callers trying to get through. I finally got around to giving them a call at 7:30 am and battled for a half hour or so til I got through. When I spoke to the receptionist she told me that the Exotic Pet specialist was out for a few more days. I was super worried I'd have to go through the same struggle to get in and wait longer to get my ball python seen, but the lady told me she could set up the appointment right then so I didn't have to fight my way through the phone lines again :) I didn't even express my disappointment either, she just got it all taken care of. They were really kind to me and my snake. They are very affordable and I had nothing but excellent service. The doctor was super friendly, extremely gentle to my snake, very informative and was more than happy to answer any questions I had. At the end of our check-up he went through all the possible tests and possible treatments we could do if my snake kept refusing food. 5* to you guys. I'll definitely be coming back here when my pets need a doctor!
Fantastic experience: Was having an emergency with my baby kitten Kermit, they were the only place near me with openings and I will definitely be coming back! Very kind staff and the vet really listened to me rather than just ordering a million expensive tests like other vets I've been to which i really appreciated as a low income customer.
Fantastic experience: The staff and doctor was outstanding and we didn’t wait due to the issue at hand. My sweet kitty is now out of pain.
That is fantastic Adrian. Thank you for sharing the great news.
Vicki
Fantastic experience: We brought both our dog and cat in. They got exams and the vaccines they needed. From the time they called me to the time I got back home was about 90 minutes. Only a few people in the waiting area, the vet and assistant where very nice and gentle with both our babies.
