Our comment from InfoVet about Summit Veterinary Referral Center:
Summit Veterinary Referral Center is recognized for its dedicated team of compassionate professionals who provide exceptional care for pets. Many clients commend the staff for their empathy and attentiveness during both routine and emergency visits. Positive experiences highlight the thoroughness of the veterinary team, who keep pet owners informed about their furry family members' conditions and treatment options. The clinic also offers a comfortable environment and efficient care, which helps alleviate the stress of pet emergencies.
Highlights from user feedback:
- Kind and supportive staff that make clients feel at ease.
- Thorough explanations of procedures and transparent communication about costs.
- Efficient response times during emergencies, with many expressing gratitude for the prompt care their pets received.
- Compassionate end-of-life services, with many noting the thoughtful ways the staff honors pets and comforts their owners.
However, some reviews indicate concerns about long wait times during busy periods and issues related to communication about pets' conditions. Certain clients reported experiences where the emphasis seemed focused on costly procedures over affordable alternatives. This aspect has led to mixed feelings about the clinic's approach to care, as some owners felt pushed towards expensive or unnecessary treatments.
In summary, while Summit Veterinary Referral Center has many satisfied clients who appreciate the quality of care, there remain areas for improvement in communication and care options for financial constraints.

Summit Veterinary Referral Center: Reviews
Negative experience: If I could give this place 0 stars I would, I took my sweet baby here he is only 6 months and super strong he was suffering some sort of heart issues they didn’t really explain but they wanted 5,700 to do the surgery and keep him overnight, I said I do not have money for that than proceed to tell me to think about end of life care. I said no and they pushed it on me to end my babies life and also they would not let me take him home or to another vet for cheaper options. because they said he wasn’t gonna make it another 3 hours without the surgery ended up paying 450 for seeing the doc and putting him to sleep. DO. NOT. LET. THEM. GET. IN. YOUR. HEAD. THESE. ARE. HORRIBLE. PEOPLE.
Fantastic experience: Our bull terrier got injured last night and we couldn’t have asked for better care. They took him back and took the best care of him, got him fixed up and he’s resting peacefully at home. Expected it to be double the price we paid and honestly just great staff!
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re so glad your pup received the care he needed and is resting comfortably at home. It means a lot to hear that our team made a positive impression and that the cost was manageable. We truly appreciate your trust and kind words about our staff!
Negative experience: Rushed here with my dog paid 800 dollars only to be told "we dont know what's wrong with her" get sent home with some meds and have her die the next day
Fantastic experience: My Leo suddenly developed severe vestibular disease on Thanksgiving back in 2024 and with nowhere else to turn, we brought him to summit. His prognosis was originally quite grim, as they feared a potential tumor but they took him in and cared for him through a long, sleepless night. We received calls updating us throughout the night, and at 4 am we received a call letting us know that Leo had rounded the corner and seemed to be stabilizing. We were able to pick him ip later that morning, and I was so thankful to see the obvious love and care they had treated Leo with when I arrived. The staff had propped him up with pillows, weighed him down so he didn’t hurt himself while seizing, and tied a bell around his neck so they’d know if he moved. We made the decision to send Leo across the rainbow bridge in 2025 as his dementia progressed rapidly after his vestibular event, but I’ll remain eternally grateful to the wonderful staff at summit for granting us another year with the most precious member of our family. Thank you for all that you do!
Thank you for sharing your story about Leo. We are truly honored to have been able to care for him during such a frightening and challenging time. It means so much to hear that our team’s compassion, vigilance, and attention to detail helped him remain safe and comfortable through the night, and that you felt supported and informed throughout the process. While saying goodbye is never easy, we’re grateful to have helped give you another precious year with your beloved Leo. Your trust and kind words mean the world to our team.
Fantastic experience: Awareness, Compassion, Kindness, Love and Understanding From The Moment Our Ms Itten Was Admitted Until We Helped Send Her On Her Way ❤️⬛❤️
Fantastic experience: first time puppy mom and tonight my puppy started screaming crying out of no where refusing to put pressure on his front leg. i rushed him here where i was helped immediately and they promptly took my baby back to exam him. ten minutes later he was brought back to me they told me right as they set him down he immediately was running and playing on all four paws. they then proceeded to tell me to go home !!! they didn’t even charge me an exam fee since it was so quick when they so had the right to do so. i’m so so grateful.
Willow, we’re so glad your puppy is okay and back to running and playing. It means a lot that our team could help quickly and give you peace of mind, and we’re happy we could do so without adding extra stress. Being a first-time puppy parent can be nerve-wracking, and we’re honored you trusted us to care for your little one. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Fantastic experience: Had the most caring experience at 2am when I brought my pup in for an emergency, I can't thank the receptionist and techs and vets enough ❤️
Ryanne, we’re so glad we could be there for your pup in the middle of the night. Our receptionists, techs, and vets all care deeply about every pet that comes through our doors, and it means a lot to hear their efforts made a difference during such a stressful time. Your pup is lucky to have such a caring owner. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Negative experience: If I could give 0 stars I would. Waited 4 hours with my poor 13 year old sick cat and she still hasn't been seen. Got there and was told the Dr. just got there and there was only 2-3 patients in front of us. 2 hours later, still waiting with no update. The lobby cleared out twice, if not three times and still sitting here!!! Checked with the front 3 different times and keep getting told the same thing. No one communicates with you. Multiple other people who arrived after us were seen and left within an hour. Ended up wasting 5 hours out of my day just to leave! Terrible experience. They do not care about your animals! Wanted a $700 deposit and told us to leave her there and they'll call us later. If we were going to do that, why'd we wait in the lobby for 5 hours?!
Fantastic experience: Took our 14 year old Labrador in on a Tuesday, expecting terrible news due to a mass that had been previously seen at a different veterinary center on ultrasound. Summit (more specifically, the surgery department) got us scheduled within a day, recommended a CT scan of the abdomen, and potential surgery. The CT came back as a mass in the abdomen, and Dr. Loomis and her team (Janesa) were able to get her in the next day for emergency removal of the mass. We were treated exceptionally well, Dr. Loomis was very articulate on what we could expect with the procedure, step by step, on how recovery would be. We felt as if we were treated with priority and respect. The level of care they provide animals in distress (and humans) is extraordinary. On the day of surgery, they kept us apprised of when she'd go in for surgery and post-surgery. She stayed one day in the ICU to be monitored, and the whole staff was very attentive to the patient and human. I cannot say better things about Summit Vet. My rescue group also uses them for emergencies and more complex veterinary care needs. Thank you to Dr. Loomis and her caring team. The ER was also very attentive. Dr. Gillikin and her staff monitored her for any changes and were also very attentive to her needs for some post op care. The entire staff goes above and beyond! Our girl is doing well, 4 days out from surgery so far. We will be using them again should anything else come up. 5 stars hands down.
Thank you for sharing such a detailed and heartfelt review. We’re thrilled to hear that your 14-year-old Labrador received the attentive, compassionate, and expert care she needed from start to finish. Dr. Loomis, Janesa, Dr. Gillikin, and the entire team work hard to ensure both pets and their families feel supported, informed, and cared for during stressful and urgent situations. Knowing your girl is doing well just days after surgery means so much to us. We truly appreciate your trust in Summit Vet and your kind words about our staff—it’s an honor to be part of her care.
Fantastic experience: We had an emergency last night where our tiny dog almost lost an eye. It required emergency surgery. We had never gone there before and were worried. I would now say they were absolutely amazing. The staff were efficient, extremely empathetic and courteous, and explained everything thoroughly. The cost was lower than I had expected for a after hours emergency requiring a surgery and they gave the option to pick up right after or in the morning since it was so late. They even refunded the excess amount I had paid. (You paid the median between the high and low quoted cost up front). They made a scary and highly stressful moment the easiest it could possibly be. I can not say enough good about our experience. Thank you guys!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Samantha. We’re so glad we could be there for you and your tiny pup during such a scary and stressful situation. Our team works hard to provide compassionate, thorough care while keeping pet parents informed, and it means so much to hear that you felt supported every step of the way. We’re thrilled your pup is doing well and appreciate your trust in us!
Fantastic experience: Took my dog in because he got into some medications, and the way that the front desk and the doctors treated us and my pup was beyond magnificent! They we're beyond caring they treated us like family! They immediately took my dog back, literally the second we walked in the door, and they saved his life! They cared, they beyond cared, it was amazing, the front desk was caring, considerate, helpful, my daughter is 9, and was with me, and they were just amazing! It was 1:00 in the morning, and they were awesome! I cannot say enough good things about this vet clinic, there's not enough good words to say how they were! This is where I will be bringing my animals from now on, and this is the only clinic I will be referring people to. Beyond amazing, every single one of them.
Krystal, we are incredibly grateful you trusted us with your pup in such a frightening situation. It means the world to hear that our team—from the front desk to the doctors—was able to act quickly, provide life-saving care, and make both you and your daughter feel supported and welcomed, even at 1:00 a.m. Saving lives and treating every pet and family like our own is exactly why we do what we do, and knowing that you feel we went “beyond amazing” truly touches us. We are honored to be your go-to clinic and deeply appreciate your trust and referrals. Give your pup a big hug from all of us!
Fantastic experience: We were very pleased with the care given to our sweet Ava in the ER for almost a week. We went through a very scary experience with her and thankfully she is on her way back to good health. The vets and staff were very caring and gave daily updates on her. We are so thankful to have this clinic close to us.
Laurie, we’re so glad Ava is on the road to recovery and that our team could provide caring support and daily updates during such a scary time. Your kind words mean a lot to all of us, and we’re honored to be here for you and Ava when you need us most. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Fantastic experience: Summit took very great care of my cat tonight with a sprained leg. Front desk managed my many calls and questions with care and patience. Additionally, when we arrived at the facility, everyone was kind and calming, considering the situation. The doctor (Dr. Tay) was incredibly informative while she answered a billion of my questions. She gave me options and offered her opinion, especially when it came to pricing.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful review, Janae. The qualities you described are the goals we strive to achieve for all of our clients. On behalf of the staff, thank you for trusting us with your pets' care. We’re committed to always going above and beyond for our clients, and your satisfaction is our top priority. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others.
Fantastic experience: I was in WA from out of town for the holidays and my dog had a pancreatitis flare up early Christmas morning. I brought her to Summit to get the supportive care she needed so we could make our way back home the next day. I called ahead to verify their hours for the holiday and the process was well organized and efficient. The staff was very kind to both of us and Dr. Nowak was friendly and open to providing me with the medications I was hoping to get to ensure she made it back home without issues. Despite the fact that I was informed they had a critical patient come in while I was there, Dr. Nowak sat down and provided me with a consultation that did not seem rushed or distracted. The techs provided updates while I waited and let me know how she did in the back without me which I always appreciate. I am so grateful to them for being there for us on Christmas! I was also pleasantly surprised that all the treatments were very affordable and I walked out the door with a lower bill than I expected for an ER. Facility was comfortable and spacious and had good coffee available. Thank you for taking good care of Mini!
We're pleased to hear that you and Mini had a positive experience at Summit Veterinary Referral Center during your holiday visit from out of town. We're so glad that our team was able to provide the supportive care Mini needed for her pancreatitis flare up. Thank you for trusting us with her care and please give her some extra love from us!
Fantastic experience: Team here is excellent. Helped save our dog after ingesting rat poison. It was a week long ordeal and the team here really gave us a realistic expectation and helped us see our dog come out healthy on the other side. I will always be so grateful for the teams here at Summit.
Justus, thank you for entrusting your pet to our care. We understand how difficult emergencies can be and are so glad to have been able to provide the necessary care and comfort to your furry family. We hope that we can continue to provide the same exceptional care to all pets that come through our doors!
Negative experience: Would avoid if possible. I had adopted a 7 month old kitten and after a few weeks she suddenly vomited and had diarrhea at the same time and soiled all over herself. I live 40 minutes away and rushed her over. We got there at midnight. The check in process was very fast and the first assistant was kind. We sat for a bit and waited to be seen which I understand the wait for an emergency vet but then things got way worse as the night went on . They told me my kitten may have parvo and took us in a room…. We sat in that room with no updates, no checking in, nothing in silence for 4 hours….. finally I went to go outside to smoke and go to the restroom and when I came back in I asked the front desk for an update on my cat. The lady was super rude and short and then another woman came rushing out telling me can’t leave the room. ??? I went back in and they came in saying I may be spreading parvo around the clinic and need to stay in the room. So I stayed in the room for another 2 hours. It’s 6am now and finally the vet comes in (who was kind I’ll give him that) but after waiting 6-7 hours hours in a small room with little updates I was told my cat had an upset stomach and was charged $500….I understand it’s busy at an emergency vet and other animals could be having larger issues and I sympathize and understand that. but an update or two would’ve been nice or being sent home earlier than a 7 hour wait for a $500 tummy ache.
Fantastic experience: I've had more experience with emergency and specialty vets than I would like. Summit was amazing. From the customer service of the admin staff to the vets themselves. There is usually a wait to talk to them when you call but it's not bad considering how busy they must be. Everyo on the team was kind, caring and amazing at their jobs. I wish they'd been able to give me better news, but I know everyone went above and beyond for my cat. Thank you for doing what you do.
We are ecstatic to hear about your positive experience with our team. We understand difficult situations and appreciate your trust in our care. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others. We’re committed to always going above and beyond for our clients, and your satisfaction is our top priority.
Negative experience: Cat came in with stomach issues, left with the recommended “feeding tube “ came home and died three days later. This kitten was 2 years old. This vet struggled to get surgery and up charge so hard that we were left completely confused. We took their recommendations and the recommended food and our kitten is dead, if you were thinking about going here because your animal is unhealthy, please do not. It was the most painful thing to watch this little creature that I love so much die because I tried to help it . I love you Jelly
Fantastic experience: I'm very grateful that Summit was able to take us in in the middle of the night and help us immediately. Very impressed with the staff.
Thank you for your amazing review. We greatly appreciate your feedback and are glad we could assist you promptly. Please give your pet some extra love from us!
Fantastic experience: We adopted Ella, adult, from Sunny Skys Pet Rescue. She suffered from poor breeding resulting Ella needing surgery. She had bilateral TPO surgery and for the first time she was pain free and running normally. Unfortunatly less than 8 months later Ella developed TPLO and couldn't walk on left rear leg. She needed another surgery to stabilizing knee. It has been a uneventful recovery and Ella can once again run around pain free. You never know what medical problems can happen to your beloved pet out of the blue. We were fortunate to have Dr. Andrew Hofeling and his awesome staff help Ella. We are so very thankful for all the staff at Summit Veternary Center. The expertise from a surgeon, Dr Hofeling and all the staff are beyond excellent. If you are lucky enough to have animal companion in your life, you can help your animal live the best years of their life with the assistance of the caring, understanding and patient staff here. With profound thankfulness to Summit, Steve and Linda
Linda, we are excited to hear about Ella's successful surgeries and recovery at Summit Veterinary Referral Center. We are honored to be trusted with Ella's care. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Fantastic experience: I had to take in an injured bunny I had seen on the side of the road while I was on a walk. I wasn’t sure if there was an owner or if it was a wild bunny. The bunny was flipping around and I was in shock. I was crying. I had my Mom come help and get the bunny in a warm blanket and travel box. She took me to my car then I drove to Summit. I wasn’t sure willing to pay to help the bunny but they said she would probably have to be euthanized. Broke my heart but at least the bunny wouldn’t be suffering anymore. They said she was probably run over or hit by a car. I just really want to thank Summit because they were willing to take her in and they were really friendly. I highly recommend Summit.
Alison, we appreciate you trying to do the right thing and we sincerely value your recommendation. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others.
Fantastic experience: My 10 month Old, 70 pound, Pitbull puppy, Theodore was hit on Monday, November 10, 2025. By a big diesel truck with some very large wheels. He thank God survived! It was a complete accident, my friend didn’t move quick enough when he went to get out of the car and Theodore got past him. He is doing wonderful though. No broken bones no internal bleeding. He did, however have a very hurt chest and From what the veterinarian doctor said, a very severely bruised lung, and concerning bleeding coming from the internal part of his left ear. The bleeding From the Earstopped Hours after the accident. You wouldn’t even think he got hit Looking at him now. Theodore is Healing miraculously and as a matter of fact, he’s starting to listen a little bit better too… A special Thank you to this hospital. The staff were so Gracious, kind, and patient. I absolutely recommend if ever you find yourself in need of help, go to this place, they are the best in my opinion. Many blessings to you all. Much love Theodore says thank you as well .
Kelsi, thank you for entrusting your pup to our care. We understand how difficult emergencies can be and are so glad to have been able to provide the necessary care and comfort to your furry family. Emma, thank you for your kind words. We know all too well how difficult it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet. We are glad we were able to provide some comfort during this tough process and please don't hesitate to give us a call should you need anything.
Fantastic experience: My Cat was vomiting, completely stopped eating, and looking lethargic. Urgent care recommended I bring in my cat to Summit. Upon arrival, the staff was quick to take our info and examine my cat. Blood work along with X-rays were taken and X-ray showed my cat had a foreign object stuck in her intestine. My cat needed same day surgery. Although they do same day surgery here, I decided to go with another Emergency Veterinarian. I’m so thankful the medical team at Summit was able to locate the cause of my cat feeling sick and so quickly too. They were also quick to send my cat’s file to my preferred Emergency Veterinarian for surgery which allowed my cat to undergo surgery that much quicker. My cat had a successful Surgery and I’m so grateful to the team at summit for locating the cause so my cat can get the help she needed. Thank you to the staff at Summit !!
It's always a pleasure to serve clients like you. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're glad we could help locate the issue with your cat quickly.
Negative experience: Hard to leave a decent review when you hear the front desk staff talking about it being a slow night, but we’ve been sitting in here for over 3 hours waiting for the doctor to look at our dog and give a diagnosis. Seriously, how are you basically dead in here and yet we’re still sitting here losing hours and sleep?!?! So unsat
Fantastic experience: This review is specific to a consult with a neurologist (Dr. Malte Schwartz) at Summit - not their emergency services. After multiple panic-filled visits to our regular vet while our French bulldog was exhibiting signs of IVDD (a degenerative disc disease), they suggested having a consult with a neurologist. I spent hours researching local neurologists for dogs, requesting quotes and asking on IVDD specific Facebook pages for Frenchies who the best in the area is. Hearing the potential costs of MRIs and surgeries put my stress level through the roof, but I was willing to do whatever it would take to ensure my baby had a good quality of life moving forward. From researching 4 separate neuros in the Seattle/Tacoma area, all prices came back generally in the same range - Neuro consult = $200-250. MRI (with sedation) = $4-6k. Surgery = God help us. The scheduler for the neuro department was my first point of contact. She was very kind and patient with all of my questions/concerns. She got us set for a consult much sooner than I had expected. Getting to Summit was not difficult and the facility is spacious, clean and welcoming. The front desk ladies were very friendly and answered any questions I had in the moment. I can only imagine how stressful their jobs are considering how many scared and emotional pet parents they come into contact all day long with emergencies. The vet tech that collected us and brought us to the exam room was very kind and social. She eased some of our worries while we did the initial intake and exam. She treated our Frenchie with love and I could tell, for once, our girl was NOT stressed or scared while at the vet. She took Nilla to the back for further examination and returned her after about 15 minutes, just as happy as can be. Dr. Schwartz came in soon afterwards. He spent easily 45 minutes with my husband and I. He was extremely thorough in covering Nilla's history, recent events/symptoms, his professional opinion on her condition and suggestions on next steps. He saved us from spending thousands of dollars on an MRI during this specific visit as it may not provide the results needed right now - but may need in the future should she start showing signs of pain. I appreciate that he put our girl first rather than pushing us to spend thousands during that visit. I will for sure recommend Dr. Schwartz and this facility to any of my friends/networks. A really great experience and I am so appreciative. I left feeling like a weight had been taken off of my shoulders and felt emotionally lighter knowing we can trust the plan/process for our girl.
Its always a pleasure to serve clients like you. We appreciate you trusting us with your pet's care and thank you for the amazing review. Please give your pet some extra love from us.
Fantastic experience: Had to bring my pup in do to him eating a dog toy in the middle of the night scans revealed he had a intestinal blockage and would need to be removed 1 hour later they were able to have him in the operating room getting it removed. They even helped after he was home with any questions I had or pictures I sent to the doctor in a very timely manner. If you have any complications with your dog I would highly recommend bringing them here surgery is a little on the pricey side but well worth the extra money imo.
Jason, thank you for entrusting your pet to our care. We understand how difficult emergencies can be and are so glad to have been able to provide the necessary care and comfort to your furry family. We hope that we can continue to provide the same exceptional care to all pets that come through our doors!
Fantastic experience: We presented to the ER on Thursday because my dogs face swelled up. Everyone who helped was so kind, both front desk ladies were wonderful talking me through the process. The two techs (one was named Jessie and I didn’t catch the other techs name) were both incredible and answered all my questions and reassured me so well! Dr Smotherman explained everything perfectly (he had an allergic reaction or bug bite) and really helped ease my mind. Today he is back to normal thanks to their help. I’m so grateful knowing they are here for my dog if I need it!
Hi Carly, thank you for your kind review. We’re glad that we were able to provide care when your pet needed it. Thank you for your visit and we hope that both you and your pet take care!
Fantastic experience: The team at Summit is incredibly kind and knowledgable. Our dog has had numerous issues in the past six months involving both the internal medicine and neurology departments. We have worked with Dr. Riordan and Dr. Schwartz, and highly recommend both. We greatly appreciate their thorough evaluations and explanations of treatment options.
Hi Hunter, thank you for your kind review. We’re glad that we were able to provide care when your pet needed it. Thank you for your visit and we hope that both you and your pet take care!
Negative experience: Don’t go here unless you’re rich and want to pay for unnecessary treatments. Our cat came in with a wound that has just happened not even an hour before we brought him in. We were treated as if it had happened days ago and that we were lying. Then we were quoted 8k-10k to treat the wound. We’re two college students with no money and obviously couldn’t afford it so in tears we sat in the office until 3am applying for loans with no luck. There was such a huge push for the most expensive treatment with little to no communication about other options and when it came down to it, we had to take the cheaper route which was highly discouraged. Our cat is healing amazingly even just after 3 days. I can’t believe I almost paid that much and put my cat through the trauma of getting stitches every day for two weeks. These people don’t start with basic care. They go to the most extreme (and expensive) options first and it’s NOT okay. Money hungry and no empathy. Just go somewhere else.
Fantastic experience: Oct 2024 - Her sister Luna had a back injury and her hind legs were not working. Her Dad and I were terrified and brought her to Summit where they quickly determined that she needed surgery. Again, they were absolutely amazing, working with our insurance, allowing us to get the deductible and bring it back and being incredibly communicative through the entire process. Luna is our miracle dog, she can walk/run like she did before and you would never know she had a back injury. I wish I could hug everyone that works here, you are all beautiful and wonderful professionals. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!! Aug 2023 - Today is my Birthday and I just received the best gift I could ever ask for: my best friend, Stella, is home with me recovering. Less than 48 hours ago I had a panic attack and was sobbing uncontrollably thinking that she was dying. She couldn't urinate and began vomitting. We checked two local Animal ER's and they were at-capacity. Summit was able to see her, so we headed there immediately in the middle of the night. I was able to complete the intake online and en route. Upon arriving, they buzzed us into the spacious and beautiful lobby, which on it's own brought me some comfort. Handing my little girl over to the nurse after talking quickly with the staff on-site, I immediately felt relief that she was in the best place she could be to get help. The staff was helpful, welcoming and caring. The vet that night quickly checked her condition and met with us to advise surgery was needed to clear the obstruction of stones in her bladder. She said we brought her in earlier than most, which made me feel SO MUCH BETTER. She was friendly, knowledgable and informative. They worked with my pet insurance company (Trupanion) and I paid my deductible later that day. Stella got her surgery a few hours later and was kept for observation. I never thought in a million years that my 4 year old dog would need surgery already, but I don't want my dog going anywhere else in an emergency and there are no words that will properly convey my gratitude to every employee at Summit Veterinary Referral Center. They called me with updates and encouraged me to call if I had questions/concerns or if I simply couldn't stop thinking about her. They really helped me feel peace and faith the entire time I was without my dog. They made sure I understood what her meds do and how/when to give them when we left today. Now she is resting with me and she is ALIVE. Thank you so so so much Summit.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are glad we could help during this stressful situation. Our team is dedicated to providing quick and efficient care for pets in emergency situations, and we're pleased to hear that your pet received prompt attention. Your trust in our services means a lot to us, and we appreciate your kind words about our staff's ability to assess and prioritize cases effectively. Happy Belated Birthday!
Fantastic experience: The only place I will take my pets in an emergency. I trust the doctors, and they have a very well staffed clinic, with the ability to do almost any testing and issue prescriptions. However, it is expensive, just keep that in mind. They do offer payment plans/arangements if needed. But, you get what you pay for. Highly recommended.
Thank you for your kind review. We’re glad that we were able to provide care when your pet needed it. Thank you for your visit and we hope that both you and your pet take care!
Negative experience: Please don't let the vets here make you euthanize your baby. This is now 2-3 years I still think of when I brought my baby here after she suffered a minor stroke, they charged me over $1000 to keep her over night for fluids and oxygen and after only a few hours called me telling me they would be putting her to sleep. We were there until atleast 4am fighting to see our dog before deciding to euthanize. I was allowed to see her for maybe a minute before they took her back again, several times while trying to decide the vet angrily attempted to pressure us into euthanasia as if this was such a inconvenience - maybe don't work the over night shift, or don't work with living beings at all if you're that cruel - he made several attempts and demands towards putting her to sleep and I ended up signing a release stating that I went against the vet's wishes and took her home that night. She is still alive and well, probably even more healthy than back then and now she is in her teens. DON'T LET SUMMIT KILL YOUR BABY - I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE TO EXPERIENCE THIS. It was so traumatizing and I often wonder how many loved ones have died unnecessarily at the hands of this facility while they take all of your money to do so.
Negative experience: Avoid at all costs! Brought in our dog in April on a referral pending a cancer diagnosis--non-emergency visit. Thankfully turned out to be a herniated disc. Upon our initial inquiry, we were estimated to pay between $1400-1700 depending on diagnosis and necessary treatment. When we went to get our dog, that received *less* care than initially slated (as he did not have cancer), our final bill was over $2300!! My partner, a nurse, reviewed the bill line by line and argued with the baffling stubborn/clueless front desk staff about some of the duplicated line items and was told more or less pay up if you want to see your pet. We came back at *their* insistence he was ready to go and we ended up waiting an additional 4 hours for him to be released. My partner ended up corresponding with the office about the ridiculous up charges and received confirmation that a couple of them were erroneous. Thankfully, he didn't let up and we filed in small claims, after which the medical director reached out to say that a tech had messed up the billing and we severely overpaid. To their credit, they refunded us. However, it should not be on the client to have to have medical knowledge to fight like this!! What a scam/sham/horrible place. We will never come back. And we hope you avoid too!
Fantastic experience: What an amazing place and an even more amazing Pet Doctor. I was so distraught , devastated over my kitty’s prognosis and even with the sad news she couldn’t have delivered it in a more compassionate caring way. I have the utmost respect for her and this facility and the staff was equally great. They were kind and patient and understanding and they worked with me to set up a payment plan in house that worked for us all so that my baby could get the care she needed and I can safely bring her home. My hearts go out to all of you thank you for all you do! Highly recommend ! It’s no wonder they were voted Pierce Counties #1 Veterinarian!
Brooke, thank you for entrusting your pet to our care. We understand how difficult these situations can be and are so glad to have been able to provide the necessary care. Your trust in us means the world! We hope that we can continue to provide the same exceptional care to all pets that come through our doors!
Fantastic experience: Saved my cat Pumba's life. When I brought him in they quickly found he was anemic and did everything they could for him. They were kind and understanding with me and took amazing care of Pumba. He is able to be home right now because they saved him.
We cannot imagine how stressful this must have been. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are glad we could be there for Pumba. Please give them some extra love from us.
Fantastic experience: I brought my dog here for some issues she was having last night. The staff were all great, but the vet working last night (9/12) is an exceptional human being. I didn't catch her name unfortunately, but I had an awful week and she met me with compassion and understanding when I needed it the most. I will never forget her and the care she showed. They took great care of my dog Hydra (even though she is difficult at vets) and came up with a plan of treatment that they communicated clearly. The staff shows they care not only about their animal patients, but about the owners as well. I would 100% chose this clinic again!
Thank you for your amazing review! We love what we do and are glad to be here for you and your pet!
Fantastic experience: I've only been here once, and it was under terrible circumstances. The people at Summit were above and beyond helpful, understanding, informative, patient, and SO much more with me. Thank you all so much for your patience and kindness <3 - Brandon & SVG
Your positive feedback is greatly appreciated, Brandon. We're truly grateful that you took the time to share your experience with us. Our team at Summit strives to provide compassionate care during difficult circumstances, and we're glad to hear that we were able to offer the support and understanding you needed. Thank you again for your kind words about our staff's helpfulness, patience, and informative approach. We hope that SVG is doing well.
Fantastic experience: Our puppy ate a sock, and we drove two hours to get to this emergency vet, as the only one on the Olympic Peninsula was at capacity. The staff were all wonderful, and took great care of him while also dealing with several critical emergencies. The receptionist was especially kind and patient, and kept us well-informed despite how busy it was. Likewise, Dr. Honjo was very thorough and attentive, despite being the only vet taking care of newly arrived patients at the time. He was very patient and thorough with every pet and their owner(s), making sure that every patient was getting the best care possible. Thank you so much from George Michael and his family, he is feeling much better now that the sock is out!
Thank you for your amazing review! We love what we do and are glad to be here for you and your pup!
Negative experience: DANGEROUS – Do NOT bring your pet here! This hospital is unsafe and should be avoided at all costs. The staff is careless and unsanitary—walking from pet to pet with the same gloves, creating serious contamination risks. They falsely claim to accept referrals, but then deny them—even after confirming with your regular vet. This can delay urgent treatment and put your pet’s life in jeopardy. If your animal requires constant or emergency care, attempting to transfer them here could have life-threatening consequences. The facility itself is chaotic, stressful, dirty, and the staff comes across as aggressive rather than compassionate. Sick pets and their worried owners deserve better. Please protect your animals and go elsewhere!
Fantastic experience: We have had positive experiences with the emergency clinic and scheduled appointments. The staff are always calm, kind, and helpful. The emergency services usually have the shortest wait time in the area and the waiting area is spacious, clean, and calm. The vet is never fun especially in emergency situations but they always make us and our pet feel cared for.
Thank you for your generous feedback, Kayla!
Fantastic experience: I came here with a cat as a follow up after I had checked her in at another ER. Summit Veterinary Referral Center offers urgent care appointments. The envionment is relaxed and friendly and communication is open. I have experience in the medical field with people and i appreciated the vet met me in a place of transparency and didn't dumb down or withhold information.
Thank you for your amazing review! We love what we do and are glad to be here for you and your kitty!
Negative experience: I understand that emergencies require waiting, but my experience at this hospital was very disappointing. Even though I arrived with my dog for an emergency, other people who came in after me were seen first. It took almost five hours before my dog was attended to, which is an unreasonable wait time. What bothered me the most was the lack of communication. I specifically asked if I could have my dog with me while we waited, since I felt more comfortable that way. I was told they would bring her to me, but that never happened. During all those hours, there was no effort to keep me informed about her condition or the process. I truly believe that better communication and more transparency with pet owners would make a huge difference. The long wait time combined with being left in the dark made this experience extremely stressful.
Fantastic experience: What an amazing experience with the staff here. They’re so kind and so wonderful and so patient. I was trying to get my cat seen around 10 pm and they even called me back to ask if I had found somebody yet and got me in quick. I was very worried and upset about my cat and they were calm and patient and I appreciate it so much. I feel like they’ve really gone above and beyond to make sure my cats in great care with update calls, and my millions of questions and everything. They all deserve raises in my opinion (‘: Updated in 2025: I had to take my cat again because he swallowed a toy this time. The staff are still so sweet and triaged him incredibly quickly and gave me time frames and updates as well. They still deserve raises
Thank you for your kind words, Madison! We are so glad we were able to help. Please give extra love to your cat from us.
Negative experience: Brought my dog in because she was in an extreme amount of belly pain. I told them what her pain signs were and if they continued that I’d like them to tell me. They x-rayed her right away, then put her in a cage for 5 hours without treatment, and just said to me - “she’s stable and resting comfortably“ and kept saying “you’ll be updated soon”. 5 hours later the vet showed me the x-tay and said “she’s doing just a little bit of the licking (pain sign) but she’s getting better”. I asked if she’d had any care and he said “we haven’t given her any medicines”. Everything was minimized. He said “I’ll give her some fluids, it’ll take 2 seconds and you can take her home”. She wasn’t given back for nearly another hour. When she came out it was immediately obvious she was STILL in a very high amount of pain. She’d only just received fluids, and had not even been taken out to relieve herself - for nearly six hours - a dog in gastrointestinal distress had not been taken to relieve herself for 6 HOURS. They put her in a cage for hours and left her stressed and in pain, letting me think they were caring for her. I hope I never ever have to come back here again. I do not recommend this place at all.
Negative experience: Summit used to be great, and it rapidly went downhill. In 2022, our dog had to have urgent surgery with neurology. They communicated very well and were excellent. In 2024, our same dog had to have the same surgery. We were met with horrible communication. We both work in the human medical field so we understand when places are busy, but our dog needed urgent surgery. They didn’t have the resources to accommodate at the time, so they kept him overnight to assess in the morning to see if they could do the imaging/surgery the next morning, but they told me to call around in the meantime to other vets because it probably wouldn’t be possible. They later told me after calling them a bunch it probably wouldn’t happen until the following day (almost 2 days later). So I finally was able to find a clinic who could immediately take him for imaging and surgery, and I called summit back several times to try to start the transfer and they didn’t answer or put me on hold for lengthy times. I left a voicemail. The other clinic needed him to come in asap. I start driving to pick him up and suddenly summit finally calls back and says they are taking him for imaging/surgery right now, and they acted like I was crazy when they were the ones who said they couldn’t do the imaging and surgery that day the last time I spoke to them and they y were the ones who told me to try to get him into another vet. Today, my dog had an appointment for a surgery consult for breathing/airway issues. My husband took off of work and used his minimal leave for the appointment. He called yesterday on his day off to see if they could get him in sooner, on his day he already had off, and they said their surgeon was sick. We assumed it was a different surgeon than the surgeon he was scheduled with today, but they just called us at 8am, less than 2 hours before his appointment, to cancel due to the vet being sick. Why didn’t they cancel yesterday, since they knew the vet was sick? It caused my husband to waste his limited work sick leave for no reason. I know stuff happens, but clearly the vet was sick yesterday and they should be able to reasonably assume whether the vet would be too sick to come to work today also and cancel before he wasted his PTO and time.
Negative experience: I i went in. My wife called ahead for my dog. It wasnt an emergency but not an appointment. They had no information that she called. I checked in at the front desk and was told to wait and someone will help me shortly. Other people came and were helped. After 45min I went to the same person I checked in with. She said can I help you? Yes I checked in with you. Why have I not been helped? Oh you haven't checked in. I checked in with you. Oh it will be a 6 hour wait now since you didnt check in. I did, with you. I said I cant wait 6 hours. She told me try Facebook for another emergency vet Im sure there are some in Gig Harbor. Seriously try Facebook? I wouldn't take a pet mouse to this vet.
Fantastic experience: Summit View is amazing! I will forever come here for all my animals emergency care services as long as I live here. My dog had developed a large swollen face in a matter of days and right now he is home getting better. He is doing great! Today he is up walking all over the place! :) Thank you to the Dr. Who treated Cola and all the staff. Especially the one who let Cola hang out with her all day while he was in for an extended stay. That was amazing! Great staff, thank you everyone!!!! Much love from Jennifer and Cola
Thank you for your amazing review! We love what we do and are glad to be here for you and your pet!
Fantastic experience: When I brought my dog Loki to Summit for help with his seizures, I was really impressed by Dr. Demuth’s knowledge and how carefully he approached everything. He was extremely thorough and made sure we understood the plan moving forward. We’re so grateful for the care and attention given to Loki.
We greatly appreciate your feedback on the care provided to Loki. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Negative experience: This place is a joke. We were givin an estimate for $6400. Our dog was there for 2 days and the only answer we received is that they came to the determination of acute leukemia. Was told she would get an ultrasound done initially never happened. but we were definitely Paid for an ultrasound, That’s just the start of it. The initial estimate is two pages long however we picked up our dog yesterday which they had claimed refused to eat and was very lame. Well, she got home and defecated and then eat like she had never seen food before. With her diagnosis of acute leukemia, there’s no evidence or testing that proves of that diagnosis, but yet strongly suggest that we euthanize our dog. After losing all trust with the vets upon arrival for picking up, our dog, a technician came to the lobby went over the discharge papers asked if we wish to speak to the doctor which I declined. I said no I just want my dog. They took us back to one of their rooms and the doctor walked through the door immediately said that I’m attacking her. I just laughed at her, asked her to please get my dog so we could leave. She began to get louder. I laughed again. Obviously, she’s mad because I wouldn’t let her kill my dog. If they had some sort of evidence My dog does indeed have leukemia. Every update that we were given every question we asked never got a truthful answer. Spoke to one doctor in the morning. A different one would call at night. One would say oh she’s doing poorly. The next one say she’s improved ask about procedures performed one says that things happen. The other says no we decided not to do it. Places a joke. Best part about it they gave us another patients prescriptions in our discharge bag that they gave us. I forgot the best part… They claimed they took a bone marrow sample was told it would take 10 to 14 days to get the results back then when we get there to get our dog the vet said we will have the results today… And let me guess it’s positive. Our primary care vet looked over the records THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF CANCER!!!!!! So don’t be surprised if they give you false prognosis for your pets…. ***UPDATE**** She came back with a negative for leukemia!!!!!!
Negative experience: I called twice before I took my cat in. At no point during either call while I was explaining what was going on was I told that they would not be able to see her because they were too busy. Had they said they couldn't see her, I woulld have taken her some place else. They took her back and I was in the waiting room for 2 hours before anyone came out and told me anything which was just they took vitals and put her in a cage. 4.5 hours later I finally had to ask what was going on and they said they were "monitoring" her, meaning they hadn't even examined her since we were there because she was hiding and not eating. When they handed her to me after I said I was done and wanted to just take my cat home, she smelled terrible. When I got her home and out of the carrier I realized she was covered in piss and shit, some of which was dried so she had clearly been sitting in it for a while. I am devastated about what my cat went through tonight and I will never take her back there. Another lady was there to pick up her dog. She had paid and we chatted for an hour. When I left, she was STILL waiting for them to bring out her dog. If you can't handle more animals just be up front about it.
Negative experience: Cold, Profit-Driven, and Pushy Toward Euthanasia — Not a Place That Fights for Your Pet: We brought our French Bulldog to Summit on the recommendation of multiple hospitals after she suddenly lost use of her back legs—likely IVDD. She was still alert, calm, and responsive—just unable to walk. We were terrified, but hopeful. What we got from Summit wasn’t compassion—it was a sales pitch. $4–6k for an MRI, $15k+ for surgery, and $1.5k for one night of hospitalization. We’d already spent thousands earlier that week at another vet. People love to say, “If you can’t afford vet care, don’t have pets,” but $15,000+ isn’t a reasonable expectation in an emergency. We asked about alternatives like crate rest, acupuncture, hydrotherapy—anything. Their answer? Euthanasia. Yes, they suggested ending her life for a dog who was calm, sitting up, and still very much herself. When we said we couldn’t afford surgery, the energy in the room changed. We were treated like we were doing something wrong. When I asked how to express her bladder due to her paralysis, the vet said, “Watch a YouTube video.” No demonstration. No compassion. They sent us home with opioids (even though she wasn’t in severe pain), and when we returned the next day to ask again for help expressing her bladder, the tech refused—because she had emptied it nervously. Again, we were hit with more comments about her “quality of life,” as if they were trying to push us to give up. One day later, she stood up. Wobbly, but standing. She's now improving every day with non-invasive therapies. If we had followed Summit’s advice, our dog would be gone. As someone who’s worked with dogs for years, I was appalled at their lack of effort to present real options. These pets are our family—not disposable. You do not just offer death or a $15,000 surgery. You provide all possible paths to help them heal. Summit did not advocate for our dog. They did not fight for her. They judged us, dismissed us, and made us feel ashamed in the worst moment of our lives. I hope no one else has to walk out of that building feeling the way we did: abandoned, belittled, and alone. Since then, our dog has re-gained strength in her legs and has been walking. She is still undergoing acupuncture/electro-acupuncture, and cold laser therapies. She is ALIVE. and she is HAPPY.
Negative experience: I came to this place after being referred by vca to these people. I brought my Rottweiler here as he was not eating like he should. When I came into this place I was basically told give us 7,000 now and yeah we can figure this out and help him. After about 3 days here I was told that he had cancer. I said ok give him the test to make sure, so they give him a 2500 dollar test, and the test comes up negative. The next day I was told that there is something in his stomach. Their gastrointestinal specialist spoke to me about it. After about 15,000 dollars I was told that I needed to put him to sleep. I took him out of there and brought him home. He lived about two more years with my at the time 80 year old mother and became her protector. He was one of the best ever. This kinda place and the stuff they tell you and the kind of chaos they have going on here combined with the promises and the cost make you wanna walk away and talk to an attorney. Stay away.
Negative experience: I came to Summit Vet for my 3 year old baby kitty named Paneer. She was experiencing lethargy and stopped eating completely—we took her to Summit for immediate vet care. Unfortunately things took a turn for the worst with my baby Paneer and she was experiencing acute liver failure. Her prognosis wasn’t looking good and we came to the conclusion with the vets help that we should put Paneer down. Up until this point, service at this establishment was good—but once they took us into the ICU to see Paneer before making the decision for the end of life portion the service quickly turned into a chaotic unorganized mess. While we were in the ICU sobbing next to our cats body—a worker was next to us reviewing balances owed on patient accounts and just shaking their head. The vets administered the euthanasia before discussing payment or any end of life services. So after the euthanasia was complete we were left in the room for 30 mins before we had to track down someone and ask them if we needed to pay or what was even going to happen to her body. The person said “oh okay one second” and soon after a different vet came BACK in with more drugs assuming that the euthanasia wasn’t complete and we told them no we just wanted to pay and leave please. After another 20 mins someone came in and gave us a brochure and said a third party will email us about cremation and quickly said that we have a balance on our account and requested my debit card. Never got an invoice or receipt after we paid. We had to request one at the front desk. I understand that things might be understaffed or swamped with patients but that doesn’t excuse the way that the whole euthanasia process itself was handled. Being an already grieving pet parent and having the vet staff being just as confused as to what’s going on while they’re putting down your baby made it all the more harder in the end. 0/10 Would not recommend. This was my Paneer:)
Fantastic experience: The staff was incredibly kind, compassionate and supportive through a terrible situation. Across the board the medical staff made sure that we understood everything that was happening and all options at every stage. Love of animals is obviously built into their processes and procedures from the ground up.
Thank you for sharing your experience, Morte. We deeply respect your feedback and are glad to hear about the compassionate care you received at Summit Veterinary Referral Center.
Fantastic experience: We brought our dog in to be euthanized. The staff was compassionate and professional, exactly what you hope for during such a difficult time. Unlike other clinics that tried to charge $150 just to be present, they didn’t make us pay extra to stay with our dog in her final moments. That meant everything.
Thank you for your kind words. We know all too well how difficult it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet. We are glad we were able to provide some comfort during this tough process and please don't hesitate to give us a call should you need anything.
Fantastic experience: Thank you so much for taking care of my Daisy! Everyone was so kind. My baby had to get internal and external stitches on her paw pad. She had to stay overnight and I was able to say goodnight to her before leaving. She's home recovering now and I'm so thankful for everyone there!
We're glad to hear that everyone was kind and that you were able to say goodnight to Daisy before leaving. Thank you for entrusting us with Daisy's care during her overnight stay and recovery process. We're pleased that she's now home and on the mend. Thank you for sharing your feedback about your visit with us.
Negative experience: We were referred to Summit Veterinary Referral Center for our senior boxer, who was showing signs of mobility issues. Originally referred to another neurologist, we booked with Dr. Malte Schwartz to be seen sooner. Our dog had a spinal injury a year ago and recovered with rest but began knuckling a back foot six months later. Our vet suspected IVDD and referred us to Summit for possible MRI and surgery when symptoms worsened. From the start, the visit was disappointing. We had to walk our dog across wet, slippery floors with no mats, and staff showed no concern. The front desk was unfriendly, and the atmosphere was unwelcoming. In the exam room, a tech ignored our warning that our dog needed to walk slowly and abruptly yanked his leash (shocking lack of care). Dr. Schwartz arrived, spoke quickly and dismissively, offered no clear answers, and seemed annoyed by our questions. He diagnosed possible Degenerative Myelopathy, claimed we had six months left, and suggested euthanasia as an option—without offering any supportive care guidance. We came seeking help and were instead met with rudeness, coldness, and a dismissive attitude. As we were leaving, Dr. Schwartz tried to pet our dog—who turned away (our pup is a people person). That moment said it all. I would not recommend Summit, and especially not Dr. Schwartz, to anyone seeking compassionate care for IVDD or DM. You and your pet deserve better—someone who listens, explains, and supports you through the unknowns.
Fantastic experience: Five years ago, the neurology team saved my dog’s life. Fast forward five years… today I brought my young dog in because he was not eating. I thought he had an abscess or something. After an evaluation by Amanda Gaytan, I learned my dog possibly has an autoimmune disorder that can be fatal if not properly treated. Dr. Gaytan answered all my questions, and started him on the appropriate medication. Everybody at the clinic was helpful. I waited about 4 hours, but during that time cases more urgent came in. As my dog was stable, I understood the need for critical cases to receive care first. Thank you for caring for my furry family members.
We're overjoyed to hear about the positive experiences you've had with our neurology team and Dr. Gaytan. It's heartwarming to know that we were able to save your dog's life five years ago, and that you trusted us again with your young dog's health concerns. We appreciate your understanding regarding the wait time, as we do prioritize critical cases. Thank you for recognizing the efforts of our staff, including Amanda Gaytan, in providing thorough evaluations and answering all your questions. We're grateful for the opportunity to care for your furry family members and hope your young dog responds well to the treatment. Thank you for entrusting us with their care.
Negative experience: I brought my dog here for a claw injury, and he started bleeding again as soon as we got home. They didn’t clean the wound and didn’t bandage it — leaving me to manage everything on my own. It felt like the staff lacked proper training, and the vet came off as condescending, possibly to cover up a lack of knowledge or confidence. I expected basic care, not a situation where I had to take over as soon as I left the clinic. Would not recommend.
Negative experience: Upon arrival, ( at about 9 pm) I was immediately greeted. I explained why my buddy and I were there. My Dog was taken in with care. I spoke with the receptionist, who initially appeared to care. After an hour or so, I checked back with the receptionist, she kindly brought me a picture of my boy in his waiting area and told me that his vitals were taken. I checked back a time or 2 over several hours and nothing more was done. The receptionist became rude ( inconvenienced) because I was advocating for my dog. After 3 1/2 hours , I asked for an update. The receptionist seemed put out, but went and checked. When she came back, I was told it could be while, after all, we are an ER. I told the receptionist I was done due to the lack of care and would take him elsewhere. They brought my buddy out with out any care or thought. I couldn’t be more disappointed with the clinic.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re truly sorry to hear that you left feeling disappointed, and we want you to know that your concerns have been heard. Through our Emergency service, we see patients based on the severity of their condition rather than in the order they arrive. This means that in some cases, more stable patients may have to wait while our team attends to those in life-threatening situations. We absolutely understand how difficult and stressful that wait can be—especially when you're worried about a beloved pet.
It’s our goal to communicate clearly and compassionately throughout the visit. We’ll be sharing your feedback with our team to help improve how we support pet owners during long wait times, and how we continue to treat every client with empathy and respect. If there’s anything more you’d like to discuss, please feel free to reach out to our leadership team directly at (253) 983-1114.
Negative experience: Took my dog who was/still is showing symptoms of something being severely wrong last night. They called stat to have her rushed back to begin assessment. Although the staff seemed somewhat kind, I found their level of care to be less than expected not just with myself but others I witnessed and overheard. No blood work or ua was performed outside of one test to see if she had heart worm. The vet kept focusing on her heart but even after the ecg, kept saying she didn’t think it was her heart because of her age and sudden onset of symptoms. I repeatedly brought up that she had similar, though not as severe symptoms one time previously and at that time the cause was a severe uti. That was stepped over and instead they kept bringing up marijuana even after I explained multiple times there is no way was exposed or consumed marijuana products. After being told I was being charged higher prices when she mentioned a Ct and I asked about cost because it seemed like all the focus was her heart, which again, she already said looked good from the ecg made me loose trust in them and felt as though they were just focused on what would cost more. I’ve never been to a vet or doctor for that matter, who did not run labs when there were signs of something being wrong that was not immediately noticeable. We have an appointment today and I let these guys know of her history and they asked did they do a UA and blood work, when I responded no, they questioned why and said that makes no sense. I explained it didn’t make sense to me either and I even called to double check after (I was a in panic mode while there obviously) and was told I would have needed to ask for that to be done. Hopefully here in a bit we will have answers and my littles in a more stable condition. I can say just from the call, I can already hear and feel the difference in the level of care. We will not be using Summit again. I’d rather drive further to have someone actually care enough to help me and my fur babies.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences with us, Jessica. We have reviewed your concerns and your pet's file with our leadership team to better understand your situation and plan for a better path forward. If you would like to discuss this further with our Medical Director, we would welcome either an email to [email protected] or a call to (253) 983-1114, whichever is most convenient for you. Thank you again for sharing your feedback; it is highly valued and helps us improve.
Negative experience: Absolutely Heartbreaking Experience – Justice for Ivy I am devastated by what happened to my sister's 12-year-old pit bull, Ivy, after being treated at Summit Veterinary in Tacoma. We trusted this clinic with her care, but instead we were met with what I believe was negligence and dishonesty. Ivy went in for a consult, and despite serious red flags—like collapsing just days before the surgery—the surgeon still cleared her for a major operation. We weren’t warned of the real risks or offered alternative options. In hindsight, it feels like we were pressured into a procedure that was completely unnecessary. Less than 24 hours after surgery, Ivy was gone. She had been cut open in multiple places and was somehow sent home and made to walk out the door. If this were a human undergoing such invasive surgery, they’d be hospitalized and under careful watch. Why was Ivy treated with such carelessness? This was not just poor communication—it felt like a betrayal. They took advantage of our love for Ivy, knowing most pet owners will do whatever it takes. Instead of helping her, they rushed her into a painful, fatal procedure. I call this what it is: negligence and cruelty. Summit Veterinary needs to be held accountable. Justice for Ivy. And responding to bad reviews with the same response is so unapologetic! You guys need to be held responsible. Instead of trying to have the pet owner reach out to you guys, it should be the other way around. This place is so unprofessional!!!!
Fantastic experience: Great speed with dealing with a very sick/injured puppy. They did their assessment, gave me an estimate of cost. It was a range and the final bill was in the middle of the range. Prices were way way lower than another veterinary hospital I have been to. May of 2025. In December of 2024 I had a similar experience with a sick mother of 2 newborn puppies. Very Happy both times.
We are overjoyed to hear about your positive experiences with us, both in May 2025 and December 2024. We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback about our prompt service, accurate cost estimates, and competitive pricing. It's especially gratifying to know that we were able to help your sick/injured puppy and the mother of newborn puppies. Thank you for trusting us with the care of your beloved pets during these critical times.
Negative experience: I can’t believe this place took our little ivy life we need justice for her on the 29 of Apr 2025 @ 0700 Ivy had surgery for Splenectomy/Abdominal Lymph node/Mass excision. $11,322 May, 1, 2025 she passed away at home. Why would they send her home knowing that she wasn’t ready to go home yet money isn’t the problem but my ivy is more precious and valuable to me I would appreciate it if they would check her carefully before sending her home she should not die on me after 48 hour surgery my IVY
We are deeply sorry for the loss of Ivy and understand how heartbreaking this has been for your family and everyone who loved her. Losing a beloved pet is never easy, especially after a challenging medical journey.
If you would like to speak with us directly about Ivy’s care, we welcome that conversation and would be glad to connect.
Positive experience: Update # 4 outside reasons had to get a heart scan. Paid and for 3 weeks they lost the scan. Didn’t inform my vet, had to do s as while chase of where the report was at while they said they didn’t have it yet charged $1500. Just to find out many weeks later he needs heart meds for a worsening heart murmur. Honestly, the place seems to have great service than bad service overpayment and under service up to every clinic around here in this seem to be the best place, but it does come with eggs and pains.. the guys in Gig Harbor just wanna put your animal down without research. Update #3my 3rd pup tore his skin really bad. They got him in right away. The while process was smooth and quick. Didn’t push payment immediately like last time. See previous review. Updated from 5 start to 2. Put my pup down 1 year ago. They were very professional caring and sincere. However, when it was time for my girlfriend‘s dog to be put down, they were very uncaring and only cared about payment and pushing the cremation services telling us to make a decision as we were walking in the door before we could have any chance to talk to anybody and then when we, push the button for them to return and put our pup to sleep After saying goodbye five times from delays. They had the Audacity of coming again, badgering us to pay prior and make a decision on cremation while the Ivy to do it was already in and they asked us to goodbye. It was the most unprofessional money grabbing I’ve seen. Overwhelm and rush us with such decisions, felt like a sales pitch. These things were taken care of after last time and should be that way! Regretted coming here adding more strain to my lady. Our dog was in severe pain while they got their money grab figured out. I tossed my card at them on discus. The place was empty for once at 2:30 am. No cars and only one other patient ahead in another room.

Negative experience: Hospitalized my dog multiple times here because they kept releasing her telling us she was fine. She refused to eat and was very painful so we had to keep coming back. We signed an estimate for multiple days of hospitalization but they kept sending her home saying she was eating and doing well. We paid upwards of 10K here with no resolution and even had to do ER surgery as a result of the issue not being resolved after first hospitalization with them. Poor communicstion throughout, and lack of transparency in pricing. It was recommended we insert a feeding tube for her (we did) but we were never taught how to use it even though the dog was still in critical condition when sent home. When we discussed our concern with our dog being sent home still sick, we were told told we could seek care elsewhere. No one took any responsability for the issues. Tranferred to a different vet and our pup is home and doing well now. Settled the bill when we left, and now I get another bill though my dog has not received any services or care with them since then.
Negative experience: This by far should be shut down!! We paid 20,000 in 3 days for an easy, common surgery to us bringing her home in a box! All they do is try to take advantage of people during vulnerable times. This 1 hour surgery turned into a 3 hour surgery and all thee worst of the worst complications that could happen happened! They have no remorse and they don’t care for your animals. Please if you love your animal stay away. If it wasn’t for this place she would be here today! If I could personally hold someone accountable it’s the doctors and the surgeon especially! We paid thinking the best care was performed and now just feel robbed of 20,000 and our dog is gone. I regret ever walking into this clinic!
Fantastic experience: It’s been a whirlwind last month and 1/2. Zelda lost the ability to use back legs. Ruptured disc. Sure I can complain about the amount of money we spent but Dr Swartz explained everything, followed up when he said he would, kept us posted, and did an amazing job with the back surgery. She’s already walking with confidence and we are amazed at the results. The Neurology dept was great, very patient and explained everything to us (Katie?). But we could tell they all took great care of Zelda and commented how sweet she was. Went into this with so much uncertainty and sadness, now have hope and happiness. We don’t have kids so our two dogs are special to us. Here’s to universal pet healthcare in the future…ha.
We are thrilled to hear about Zelda's successful recovery following her back surgery. It's wonderful to know that Dr. Swartz and our Neurology department were able to provide clear explanations and keep you informed throughout the process. We're delighted that Zelda is already walking with confidence, and we share in your happiness and hope for her continued progress. Thank you for entrusting us with Zelda's care and for taking the time to share your experience with us.
Fantastic experience: I was guided to Summit Tacoma for my dog Barley's lymphoma treatment, which began in December and ended with this last appointment the end of March. This journey is hard - so much so that sometimes I felt like I should stop. But, I am forever grateful for the amazing Oncological Team at Summit for the grounding guidance and loving care they provided to my dog Barley - and also to me, which helped us get through. If you find yourself in this position, and are choosing to go through the CHOP process, you could not select a more kind, caring, competent team to walk through treatments with to give your beloved pet a chance at a happy life longer. Thankful for the many angels that were there with us.
We are pleased to acknowledge the positive feedback regarding the care and guidance provided to Barley during his lymphoma treatment. Our oncology team is committed to delivering the highest quality care to our patients and their families during these challenging times. We recognize the difficulty of this journey and are gratified to have offered support to both you and Barley throughout the CHOP process. We appreciate your kind words and your trust in our team to provide care for Barley. Thank you for sharing, Kimberley.
Negative experience: We spent 6 hours, and the reason for my pet problem was not what they proposed. Afterward, we visited a few other doctors who agreed that Summit gave us the wrong answer. Even the Summit doctor called me back and agreed that the problem my pet has is not what the first doctor proposed. On top of it, they wanted 10K for the surgery! 10K!!! Without even confirming for 100% we need it. This is very expensive place. You can't stay with your dog. We're going to a different place. Customer service was good with calling back and going through the records. Doctors, mostly young girls. Very nice girls! Probably not lots of experience. I wish that as an ER, they would have more resources and knowledge to evaluate and examine your pet. I wish the surgery personnel would be present for evaluation. Otherwise, you have to come back another day to meet a surgeon just for conversation! Not even for a full exam. If you need a full exam , then you will need another day and appointment. All of it costs money! Plus, this NOT an Emergency in my understanding. Emergency in my understanding , is where you come in and have your answers the same day.
Fantastic experience: My pup came in for an ultrasound. Found an impacted mass, and performed an endoscopy. Dr Milo explained in detail the procedures, possible outcomes and was extremely patient with our questions. Thank you to all the staff for taking such excellent care of my dog.
We are glad to hear that your dog received excellent care during the ultrasound and endoscopy procedures. Dr. Milo's detailed explanations of the procedures and possible outcomes, along with his patience in answering your questions, demonstrates our commitment to clear communication regarding your pet's health. We strive to provide the highest quality care for all our animal patients, and we appreciate your feedback. Thank you for choosing us for your dog's care.
Negative experience: I would like to think they tried but they missed the mark. The only thing that sticks to me is when the surgeon said he usually rates the same lung lobectomy in past surgeries of the same nature that he measures it in months but with our 10.5 year old rescue dog he felt confident we would measure it in years. Here we are 60 DAYS later and I am back in their office and Craig has fluid in his lungs. So 3500 for mri 8700 for procedure. 60 days later they charge me 1000 more to drain the fluid from his lungs. The only other option I had was euthanasia in which they gave me an estimate of 500 bucks. So I chose to drain the fluid which they blamed on the cancer which had not spread as of the surgery but somehow it wasn’t caused by the surgery 60 days prior. It was caused by the cancer that as far as we knew as of January was just a lung tumor that the surgeon said was hopeful to be low level malignancy. Here we are at home two days after drainage and he is breathing hard again and wretching in what seems to be pain. Now I have the only course of action left is to put him down. If the staff here truly cared for animals with all of the 13k I have given them in the last 90 says you would think they could at least maybe waive the 500 dollar euthanasia bill. Maybe then I would use their services that one last time. Otherwise this place is only out for your money and not what we all would hope for. I mean poor guys hair hasn’t even grown back yet. I get it cancer sucks but as far as we knew 60 days ago it was just a tumor in his lungs and the surgeon was measuring his recovery in years not months. Who would of thought it would only be days!
I'm really sorry to hear about the difficult situation you're going through with Craig, and I completely understand your frustration. It's heartbreaking to see a beloved pet go through such challenges, especially after making difficult decisions in hopes of providing a better outcome.
While we always aim to provide the best care possible, I know the circumstances you're describing are incredibly difficult and disappointing. Cancer can be unpredictable, and despite our best efforts, it doesn’t always follow the path we hope for, which can feel like a betrayal when we’ve invested so much time, emotion, and money into our pets' health.
I truly regret that we weren’t able to meet your expectations, and I understand why you'd feel hurt about the cost and the lack of resolution. Your feedback is incredibly important, and I’ll be sure to pass it along to the team. Please know that we don’t take these situations lightly, and we always strive to treat pets and their families with compassion and care.
Thank you for sharing your experience, and I hope you and Craig find peace in whatever decision you make moving forward.
Negative experience: If you came here for canine oncology just turn around and run now!! Wasted $245 that they made me pay for an exam just to tell me absolutely nothing more than what my vet and Google had told me based on his diagnosis, then proceeded to tell me again I need more testing just to find out how aggressive it is even though I’ve already spent thousands to get to this point and that was quite literally all I came to find out. I decided against chemo so she recommended steroids and I specifically asked if it would have any change in his behavior AT ALL and she said no maybe just a little bit of food aggression because he will be more hungry, which was a blatant LIE. I went to go pick up my prescription from my vet, not only did it say on the side effect warnings but my vet personally highlighted it as well that it can cause aggression and changes in behavior. My not even two year-old son was in the room with me while she assured me it didn’t have those side effects just to carelessly endanger my son’s life as she was well aware that he had an unstable temperament already with his dog aggression. Made me waste another $30+ on prescription that I won’t even be using for my dog because it would be extremely irresponsible of me to put a dog With an already unstable temperament on steroids. And now I’m out almost $300 just from that appointment with absolutely no more information than I had going in. They look at your pet like a cash grab and don’t treat them like they’re an actual member of your family whatsoever, let alone your beloved pet. Not to mention the fact that they took my dog in the back room and wouldn’t bring him out until I paid them up front when they didn’t even need to take him back to examine him or anything as he already had all his charts sent over and recently done for everything, there was no reason she couldn’t examine him in the room with us. Stay away!!
I’m sorry to hear about your experience and can truly understand how frustrating it must have been for you. Our team strives to provide the best care and treatment options possible for both our clients and their pets, and I apologize that we didn’t meet your expectations.
We understand how emotionally and financially taxing it can be when making decisions about your pet’s health, and it’s important to us that clients feel informed and confident in the care we provide. Thank you for sharing your feedback—it’s invaluable for helping us continue to improve.
Negative experience: I brought my puppy here a year and half months ago when he was lethargic and vomiting. They diagnosed him with parvo and immediately pushed for hospitalization, giving us a quote of $10,000+ and telling us that at-home care would most likely result in his death. When we explained that we couldn’t afford that, they strongly suggested we put him down for $3,000 instead—because, according to them, it was “more humane” than trying to care for him at home. They also insisted that our other puppy must have it too and told us to bring him in for the same options—either $20,000 for hospitalization or $6,000 to put them both down. We refused and chose in-home care despite being repeatedly told our puppy wouldn’t survive. It was clear they were more focused on pushing expensive treatment or euthanasia than actually helping us explore affordable options. And guess what? Five days later, our puppy was running around, alive and well. This clinic made us feel hopeless when there was still a chance. If we had listened to them, we would have lost our beloved pet unnecessarily. If you’re taking your pet here, be prepared for aggressive upselling and scare tactics.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We deeply regret that you felt the care provided did not meet your expectations and that our approach made you feel pressured. Our priority is always the well-being of pets and the comfort of their owners, and we sincerely apologize if that was not conveyed during your visit.
We understand that the financial burden of treatment can be significant, and we try to offer all options available to help owners make the best decisions for their pets. While we aim to present the most effective treatment plans, we recognize that every pet and situation is unique. We're glad your puppy made a full recovery and are truly sorry if our recommendations caused you unnecessary stress.
We take feedback like yours seriously and are continuously working to improve our approach in supporting pet owners through difficult decisions. We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts, If you'd like to talk more about your experience please give us a call at 253-983-1114 or email [email protected].
Negative experience: If I could give you guys a zero I would! Tell me why my dogs bandage that covered her fentanyl patch was removed during her visit??? If someone in our household would have touched it, that would have caused some serious injury! Not to mention what may happen if my dog would have licked at the patch! She would overdose and die, that's what would have happened. Horrible work Summit, you clearly don't know what you're doing.
We take your feedback seriously and would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your concerns in more detail. Unfortunately, we are unable to identify you as a client based on the account name this review is posted from, so we kindly ask that you give us a call at your convenience.
Negative experience: From start to the finish of my dog’s life, they provided the worst care, the poorest communication, and the highest cost I have ever experienced. My background of working with a university teaching vet hospital gave me what excellent care and what a baseline health care look like. Summit did not meet the baseline. After a botched gall bladder surgery, extensive suffering by my dog, they shrugged, and sent me home, in anticipation that I would euthanize my dog in the next few days. I figured they wouldn’t do that adequately, either, and enlisted at home euthanizing vet. The Summit tech doing the final check out when I decided it was time to leave Summit’s “care” sold me $500 of drugs that wouldn’t be needed for a dog getting set for euthanization, and the tech angrily argued with me, she didn’t include steroids, even though my pup had been on them and it was likely the only drug that was on my dog’s medication list that would be helpful to relieve her inflammation and suffering. Finally they relented and gave me the prednisone, after I called in, after i left. Don’t take your dog here, if you care about your dog, and your bank account.
At Summit Veterinary Referral Center, we aim to provide exceptional care for both pet and pet owners. We are sorry to hear that your experience did not reflect our values. Please know that we take your feedback seriously and will be sharing your comments internally.
Fantastic experience: It’s taken me a few months to come back and leave a review.. but I can’t thank the oncology team at Summit enough for their kindness and support when I brought my dog Oso to them in December 2024 following his lymphoma diagnosis. They were understanding of my concerns about finances interfering with his care, and offered me options. While he only survived two days following his first dose of oral chemo due to an infection developing, I remain eternally grateful that Dr. Callanan and Maggie gave us one last fighting chance.
We are truly grateful to hear about the kindness and support provided by our oncology team during Oso's treatment. We appreciate you sharing your experience with us, Abbey. We understand the challenges associated with a lymphoma diagnosis and are pleased our team was able to offer you options and address your financial concerns. Dr. Callanan, Maggie, and the entire oncology staff are committed to providing compassionate care to all our patients and their families. We are deeply saddened by your loss and our hearts are with you during this difficult time.
Fantastic experience: This hospital is amazing and I wish I could thank each and every individual staff member who works here. We were faced with a scary situation with my 13 year old yorkie. We were not able to afford her treatment and while having a complete meltdown in the lobby, I had multiple staff come up to me and offer me some financial options. Two staff members explained to me how they went through the same situation and what worked out for them so I followed their advice and was approved for creditcare in order to afford at least the down payment portion of the treatment. The vet even lowered the down payment for me because they are caring and compassionate here and actually want to help you in the best way possible. Today was a very hard day and was almost preparing to have to put my baby down and I was NOT ready for that. Because of this amazing team I have a bit more time with my girl and can now give her a bit of an extended healthy life and I feel comfort in her estimated life span of 6 months to a year. She will get only the best from me up until her final last days and this was only possible because of this amazing team. Thank you all so very much ❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words. We are truly honored to have been able to support you and your Yorkie during such a challenging time. At our hospital, we are dedicated to ensuring that every pet and their family have access to the resources they need, and we are so grateful that we could provide some peace of mind and options for you. We deeply believe in the importance of compassionate care, and it’s amazing to know that our team’s support made a difference for you.
Your words mean a lot to us, and we are all so happy to have been able to help your sweet girl and give you both more time together. We are wishing you and your Yorkie many more happy and healthy days ahead, and we’ll be here whenever you need us. ❤️
Negative experience: This place is a absolute joke. Keep your pets away from here. I brought in a cat with open pyometra they did a exam and charged me almost $500 and said most likely pyometra, I was told it would be around 10,000 to have her spayed to solve the problem. I told them I would go elsewhere to get her spayed and the said to com back if we needed blood work for the surgery. I found a place to spay her for around 400 dollars but they needed blood work. I returned to summit to get the blood work and they said they wouldn't do it without another exam for $250 and $185 for blood work. These people don't care about you or your pets at all and belong no where near your beloved pets all they want is your money. There is absolutely no communication between staff and everything is different depending on who you talk to. Please find a better vet to go to, one that actually cares about your beloved pets
Your feedback is important to us, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We value your input and will carefully review and address the concerns you've raised regarding our services and communication. Our team strives to provide the best care possible for all pets, and we will use your feedback to improve our processes. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention.
Negative experience: My dog is an established patient with internal medicine here. I have been calling and emailing for THREE WEEKS to get him scheduled for a procedure, and they can't be bothered to get back to me at all. Clearly my beloved senior dog is not a priority to Summit.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We sincerely apologize for the delay in scheduling your senior dog's procedure and for the lack of communication you've experienced. This is not the level of service we strive to provide. Please contact us directly at (253) 983-1114 so we can address this issue promptly and ensure your pet receives the care he needs without further delay.
Fantastic experience: Although we were there for a very sad reason the staff and the Dr we interacted with were all very supportive and sympathetic. They are competent and professional. They treated us and our sweet boy immediately with urgency and the utmost care. I will recommend this clinic to any pet owners I know.
We are thrilled to hear about your positive experience at Summit Veterinary Referral Center. Thank you for sharing your feedback! We're glad our staff and doctor were able to provide supportive and sympathetic care during such a difficult time. Fantastic experience: Dr Schwartz, Kelly, Tracy, Liberty, Anna.... Thank you so much for a timely, thorough, informative, visit that allowed us to make an educated decision on how to proceed w our cavaliers new(newer) onset of neurological symptoms. Dr Schwartz gave us details on the pathology, treatment options, and his opinion on how to proceed with our super sweet, lovable, and spoiled cavalier. We feel so much relief toward Olivers future. Thank you! CL and Cavalier Oliver
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, CL and Cavalier Oliver. We are glad we could help with Oliver's neurological symptoms. It's our goal to provide relief and reassurance to pet owners like yourself, and we're happy we could do that for you and Oliver.
Negative experience: This place is chock full of veterinary quackery in its worst form. The front staff is completely incompetent - between not even knowing which freakin dog was mine, losing my personal information, and sending me the wrong bill, I've completely lost faith in this place. Oh, and not to mention, they injured my dog when drawing his blood. He couldn't even stand for two days unassisted. When I picked him up he was shaking, scared, and had urinated all over himself. But the techs assured me that "he was just drooling alot". Absolutely insulting. To make matters worse, the doctor never even called me like they promised. I had to call THEM. Once I got on the line, I was told to call back because "they were short staffed." So here I am, anxiously awaiting further information. Days go by. So I had to call them ... yet AGAIN. Stay away from this place at all costs. Their rates are unreasonably high, they will injure your pet due to their carelessness, and will never follow up with you whatsoever. AVOID AVOID AVOID
We’re very sorry to hear about your experience and understand how upsetting this must have been for you and your pet. Providing compassionate and high-quality care is our priority, and it’s concerning to hear that we did not meet your expectations.
We take all feedback seriously and would like the opportunity to discuss your concerns further to better understand what happened and see how we can make things right. Please reach out to our management team at 253-983-1114 at your earliest convenience.
We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and hope to have the chance to address your concerns directly.
Negative experience: I have ZERO confidence in this medical facility. Between the injury to my dog's leg from THEIR actions during sedation, the lack of communications about critical treatment needed, not being able to even refund me money owed correctly (SUMMIT--YOU CAN KEEP THE MONEY YOU NEVER REFUNDED ME AFTER I CALLED TO GET THAT DONE), the concerning reaction to sedation on THEIR watch...Summit is a MEDICAL MALPRACTICE LIABILITY. I will NOT be trusting them with anything let alone my dog's medical care. I'm waiting for those results and taking my dog ELSEWHERE. SEE BELOW: This clinic run incredibly poorly (e.g., missing information, no call backs with test results, miscommunications, not being able to bill me correctly, etc.) on the administrative side. Well, that and they injured my dog. Made an appointment for my elderly (13 YO) dog to be seen by an Internal Medicine doctor. When making the appointment, I was told by the front desk that they would send an email for me to fill out a couple days before the appointment. Just standard forms and such. I never received anything. I arrived well over 30 minutes early for the appointment and no one asked me about any forms to fill out.I met with the doctor and that went well--there was no issue with the doctor. JUST EVERYTHING ELSE! On to the injury to my dog. My dog was taken to do many tests which had to be done under sedation which was fine as my dog had undergone 7 previous sedation/anesthesia procedures in his lifetime and NEVER had any issues. I picked him up that afternoon and he was still pretty groggy which was absolutely normal. But as the evening went on, his condition worsened. He was extremely ill from the sedation which had NEVER EVER happened before. I have no idea what they did to him but his reaction to sedation was poor for the first time in his life. What happened?! What I can say is that he was also limping in one of the legs where he was likely injected for the sedation (back left leg). It was SO BRUISED he was limping! I confirmed with his physical therapist my dog sees regularly that what I saw was indeed a nasty bruise. His PT is also a vet tech so don't think they didn't know a bruise when they saw one. Whoever was in charge of that task (i.e., catheter/sedation) clearly was rough on my boy. My dog is not a fighter, he's an elderly dog and so calm and sweet so don't think he was "fighting" them. His leg was BLACK. He's a cancer survivor on three legs. Why didn't they take extra precaution not to injury the remaining limbs?!?!?!? Why was my dog limping? Why was the leg so heavily bruised. WHY!? To make matters worse, the front desk told me that I would be called by the doctor that same day or the next day. By the third day with NO contact from ANYONE, I called. The doctor called me shortly after but this is ridiculous! $1,800 later and I have to be chasing these people for critical conversations about a serious medical condition (he could have seizures and DIE without treatment for what I went to Summit to get help with) that likely requires life saving surgery. Just now, I called asking for an update on the last test they said would take a week to be ready. Well, a week passed and once again I call asking for an update. "Oh I think it's ready..doctor will call you." Jesus Christ! Do I need to do the tests myself?! What did I pay you for?! Why am I the secretary trying to get these people to give me ANY information they said they would give me?!
Your feedback is important to us, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We take all client concerns seriously and will carefully review the points you've raised about your dog's care and our communication processes. We strive to provide the highest quality of care for all our patients, and we will use your feedback to identify areas where we can improve our services. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. We will take your comments into consideration as we work to enhance our practices and procedures.
Fantastic experience: I cannot say enough about Dr. Weh and the Summit Vet surgical staff! Our 4 y/o Cane Corso needed bilateral TPLO surgery and we couldn’t have asked for better care for our “little girl”. Dr. Weh was so patient with us as my husband and I asked sooooo many questions and ran through countless scenarios. Dr. Weh was kind, thoughtful and treated us and Roma like we were part of his family. You never want your pet to have to endure a surgery but I’m so thankful we had the care of Dr. Weh and his team for Roma’s!
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Rebekah! It's wonderful to know that Dr. Weh took the time to patiently answer all your questions and address your concerns. We understand how stressful it can be when a beloved pet needs surgery, and we're glad our team was able to make you feel comfortable and well-informed throughout the process. We're thrilled that Roma received the care she needed for her bilateral TPLO surgery, and we hope she's recovering well.
Fantastic experience: My 13 year old male cat had a grand mal seizure at 2am and I am so thankful for the care and efficiency that the veterinarian and techs exhibited. They made an incredibly scary situation significantly easier to manage. They were kind, competent, compassionate, understanding, and proactive. We received the consideration, information and medication we needed to do right by our buddy. I found the price very reasonable for an emergency vet visit. I would absolutely recommend this clinic!
We sincerely value your recommendation, Jacki. We're glad our team was able to provide the care and support you and your cat needed during such a stressful situation. It's always our goal to offer compassionate and efficient service, especially in emergency situations. We are glad we could provide care and support during such a difficult time.
Fantastic experience: This is mine and my girlfriend’s second time coming here and they are the best. Everyone is extremely nice and understanding. The doctors we saw were thorough and two of the more knowledgeable vets we have seen. Short wait time. Would recommend anyone to take their pets here if something is seriously wrong.
We sincerely value your recommendation and are glad we could help your pet. Our staff's commitment to offering compassionate, understanding, and helpful care is a cornerstone of our service, and we're pleased to know that this was reflected in your experience.
Fantastic experience: Jesse and employee summit during the end-of-life care for my pet Was outstanding and her professionalism her caring her compassion the time that she took with me I cannot say enough good things about this girl she is absolutely wonderful For both the pet owner and the pet I recommend her highly To anyone who loves their pet Like I loved mine. Jesse made a bad situation bearable For me.
Michelle, we know all too well how difficult it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet. They will forever remain in our hearts. We are so glad that Jesse was able to provide some comfort during this difficult time and please don’t hesitate to give us a call should you need anything.
Negative experience: I don't think anyone ever hopes to need to come to any kind of animal hospital, let alone one that is an urgent care/emergency room/after hours setup, but I had always heard that Summit was the best so when my dog Bernie had diarrhea that wasn't clearing up after nearly a week and turned into bleeding from the butt, I felt that Summit would be the right place to go to make sure he was taken care of. I will say that fortunately I hadn't needed emergency care in all of the years of my dog's life, so this was my first experience at such a place, but when they say this place is the "best" - what they MEAN is, it's likely the best of the worst, and the psychological warfare that will be inflicted on you as a client of Summit will be unmatched. The ICE cold waiting room, I believe, is meant to put you into a deep freeze while you await a doctor for hours, spinning out mentally about what's going on with a pet that is your entire world, to only spend ~5 minutes giving you a non-diagnosis and explaining what tests they want to run and how much they will run you. By the time all the hours have passed, you're so mentally exhausted that you just say yes to everything and your $300 bill becomes $700 and 15-20 minutes of running a test becomes 2 more hours. And I would have NEVER done it had the person I spoke to on the phone not told me they could get my dog in at 9:30. And while I understand others come in with emergencies, giving a time implies that's when treatment will begin and from arrival at 9:30, my dog Bernie wasn't even triaged until 11PM, and not seen by a vet until after 2AM and ONLY because I had a full on panic attack in the waiting room after asking for an update from the individual working the front desk (which I will circle back on). All said and done, we finally were able to leave at 4:30 AM. Circling back on the individual at the front desk, after three hours had passed since triage I asked for an update (assuming they had maybe been doing SOMETHING back there in those 3 hours - spoilers: they had not) and in response I was met with straight-faced, smug responses implying how stupid I was for not knowing that would be the deal and it was all totally normal for an animal ER - she said she wasn't keeping my dog hostage and I could take him home whenever but that he was fine back there (alone, scared, anxious and bleeding). All of this was just SO ironic given the "Summit Values" listed behind her - "connecting with heart", "allies in patient care". There was ZERO kindness, empathy, heart, allyship, or patient care in any of my interaction with this individual - someone who should have been an embodiment of the values of this "best in the area" hospital, and she was downright unkind and unpleasant in response to questions that I thought were EXTREMELY fair to ask. My interaction with this individual tarnished my entire view of Summit to the point where I almost didn't want ANYONE there caring for my pet...even after all that time spent waiting for care. And ironically, post panic attack, we were immediately seen by the vet...so I'm not saying to cause a scene but based on what I saw, the only people who were immediately seen by doctors were the ones causing a scene so do with that what you will. The panic attack was just the cherry on top of my already awful day (and week) of having a sick dog, being near hypothermic in that horrific waiting room at Summit, and being degraded by their front desk employee... and while the vet and vet assistant were both very kind in their care of my Bernie, there is SO much Summit could do better in terms of client and patient care, communication, and expediting processes, while keeping pet parents as comfortable as possible knowing their pets are suffering to the point that they came to an ER. And while I hope to never need to come to Summit again for obvious reasons, for the LOVE of god, if none of my other feedback is taken to heart, at least turn up the thermostat just a tiny bit. Being freezing, tired, and sad about your pet is truly enough to drive someone crazy.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re truly sorry to hear that your visit with Bernie did not meet your expectations. Providing compassionate care to both our patients and their families is our priority, and we regret that you felt otherwise during your time with us.
Emergency veterinary care can be unpredictable, and while we strive to provide timely updates and support, we understand that long wait times and communication challenges can be frustrating, especially in stressful situations. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will use it to improve our processes wherever possible.

Negative experience: I recently visited Summit veterinary Hospital for a check-up for my dog, who was exhibiting concerning symptoms such as vomiting, lack of appetite, yellowing of the eyes and ears, and signs of dehydration. Unfortunately, the level of care and attention provided by the staff was disappointing. During our consultation, the technician seemed distracted and not fully attentive to my dog’s distressing condition. After a brief examination and blood work, I was informed that the veterinarian would not be available until Wednesday, leaving me with little guidance or support for my dog’s critical state. The only advice offered was to administer anti-nausea medication and to return if her condition worsened. Upon returning home, my dog’s condition did not improve, and she continued to vomit. This experience has left me with serious concerns about the professionalism and competence of the staff, especially considering the significant amount of money we have invested in this hospital for our pet’s healthcare. It is disheartening to see such a lack of empathy and urgency in a situation where a beloved pet’s life is at stake. * details: The technician did not meet the standard of care that your hospital claims to provide to every patient. During our visit, the technician appeared distracted and not fully present while we were explaining our pet's condition (my wife and I even looked at each other surprised because her mind and eyes were somewhere else) Despite our concerns, she quickly took our pet away and returned in like five minutes, showing a lack of proactive effort in addressing our pet's urgent needs. We were surprised by this approach, especially considering that your hospital is advertised as an emergency facility. Furthermore, instead of addressing our pet's immediate medical needs, we were advised to go home and administer anti-nausea pills. The following day, when the technician contacted us, she primarily focused on discussing the feedback we left on this platform rather than relaying the doctor's message. We expressed our disappointment and concern, emphasizing that if this level of care continues, it may deter others from seeking treatment at your facility. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we cannot in good conscience return to your facility or recommend it to others. The way we were treated by the technician has left a lasting impression, and we hope that you take our feedback seriously to ensure improvements in the future. *our beloved Luna died a few days later thx to the useless staff at this hospital…

Fantastic experience: They provide such amazing end of life care for my dog. It was time to say good bye and it was a Saturday and my normal vet wasn't available for that. They recommended this place. The experience was met with compassion and care for my big girl Ursa. They even had chocolates for the dogs going to heaven.
Thank you for your touching remarks, Briston. Our entire team is thinking of you during this difficult time. Ursa will forever remain in our hearts. We are glad that we were able to provide some comfort during this difficult time and please don’t hesitate to give us a call should you need anything.
Fantastic experience: Our family would not have been blessed with 12 years with our sweet boy if it weren’t for the internal medicine team. I cannot thank them enough for the care they gave my fur baby - the kindness, compassion and attention to our family and his needs. We are forever grateful. Highly recommend them
Thank you for sharing your wonderful review, Morgan. The qualities you described are the goals we strive to achieve for all of our clients. On behalf of the staff, thank you for trusting us with your pets' care! We sincerely value your recommendation.
Fantastic experience: Wow! Summit is so much better than Blue Pearl.
From the check-in through the check-out the clinic was welcoming and positive.
I was here to see Dr. Kice, the Ophthalmologist. Firstly, his tech
Thank you so much for your kind words, Susan! Our staff's commitment to offering compassionate, understanding, and helpful care is a cornerstone of our service. We’re thrilled to hear that you and Bridgette had such a positive experience at our practice. We appreciate your compliments words about our staff and facility!
Negative experience: Stay far away from this place. I had to bring my Labrador in due to a fever and some swelling on the side of her face. My regular veterinary office had two emergencies already, so they couldn’t see her until the next day. They charged me almost $4000 and told me she needed a surgery that would START at $10,000. They told me she needed her whole ear canal removed and other things. I came and picked my dog up the next day (they told me they had to keep her overnight,) and AFTER I paid the extra charges they made me wait 2 hours to get her. Makes sense since she looked 100% worse!! I couldn’t believe it! The doctor told me to have a “Quality of Life” appointment with her regular veterinarian. I was devastated. I couldn’t believe that over night I was maybe going to be saying goodbye to my best friend of 12 years. My vet got us in, and within 10 minutes discovered she had an abscess behind her ear that was causing 100% of her problems. We had it drained, cultured, cleaned up and within about 2 hours she looked almost completely normal. This place was going to take advantage of the fact that I would do anything for my animals and pay any price. They charged me an astronomical fee in 2022 for another dog who needed an emergency surgery, and I didn’t balk at the price. I just paid it. You would think a place that you should be able to trust with your beloved pets wouldn’t be a scam and a rip off. Literally go anywhere else but here. If zero stars was an option, that’s what they would get. Look at the pictures I attached. They speak for themselves!! They go in order. The first two are the day we woke up and right before I drove to the Scam clinic. The third is how she looked when I picked her up from them. The fourth and final are how she looked IMMEDIATELY after she had proper care!

Fantastic experience: My baby did not survive her battle with her liver failing. But I am grateful for the facilities and end of life care this center offered. First off, the waiting/reception area is thoughtfully arranged. It allows for privacy for each family and they have coffee, water, and vending machines available. Everything was clean and taken care of. Once we had to make the tragic decision to euthanize, we were moved to a much more comfortable room and were given as much time as we wanted to say goodbye. We were also given the chance to see her in the ICU before deciding as well, which greatly helped our decision to end her suffering. I'm grateful she was able to be comfortable with us before she passed, it's more than others get to experience. Unfortunately, this is not the first time we've gone through this so compared to other offices, I genuinely felt like they cared about our experience and comfort.
Your positive experience with our end of life care means a lot to us. We are deeply touched by your kind words about our facilities and the care we provided during such a difficult time. We strive to create a comfortable and supportive environment for all our patients and their families. Thank you for sharing your feedback and for trusting us with your beloved pet's care in her final moments. Please know that we are here to support pet owners through both happy and difficult times.
Negative experience: Worst experience of any veterinary clinic I’ve ever witnessed. No love or compassion for our sweet little Jack Russell Terrier or even others there. Most unprofessional greedy, and mean spirited disrespectful excuse for a clinic. If you even want to call it that. I’d give them negative 10 stars if it was possible. They worsened our puppies symptoms. Suggested putting her down completely inappropriately when clearly she shouldn’t be. They were beyond rude at the front desk and zero heart felt compassion for the sadness of a companion and family loved dog having a hard time with getting older. They accidentally charged us 8 times too much money that was someone else’s bill. Then didn’t even apologize and treated us like it was are fault they completely majorly screwed up when we’re already in an extremely sensitive devastated crushed state hearing we were going to loose our family member.
Fantastic experience: We went through an unexpected loss and the staff at Summit were so patient and caring. They explained everything clearly, were respectful when going through the necessary administrative steps, and helped us honor our dog well. The inpatient staff took incredible care of our girl. The space for our dog’s final minutes was homey and calming. Very well thought out. Thank you to the whole team for caring for all of us.
Rebecca, thank you for your kind words. We know all too well how difficult it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet. We are glad we were able to provide some comfort during this tough process and please don't hesitate to give us a call should you need anything.
Fantastic experience: I've had some time since the passing of my pup and am now ready to leave a review. The staff at Summit, specifically the oncology and tech staff, far surpassed my expectations. I was referred there for a mass on my dog's ankle. The results were, not what I wanted to hear, but I felt very communicated with and supported on what options laid before me and what would overall be best for my baby. Unfortunately, Caedus did not beat his cancer and crossed the rainbow bridge there on March 8th of this year, 2024. I miss him every day. I received a card from his care team a few days later and it was very clear from the messages they left, that they truly knew him and understood his quirks, even after a few visits. The love was oooozing out of that card. I hope to never have to visit summit again under these circumstances, but I would not hesitate if I needed to. Thank you for all that you did and all that you do. Attaching photo of Caedus in his beloved sweater, on our last adventure.
Fantastic experience: My sweet elderly sphynx cat had been seen at Summit for years in their various specialty departments for various age-related conditions, and they loved her so much and went above and beyond for us. Most recently she was seen for what ended up being a terminal illness, and everyone gave her the most loving and skillful care possible to give her the best chance to recover, but when it was clear that wasn’t a possibility, I was called immediately by the specialist vet to come cuddle before saying goodbye. Everyone was so compassionate and truly loved my cat during every one of her visits.
We're honored to have been able to provide compassionate care for your sweet sphynx cat. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
