Fantastic experience: Since moving to Billerica a year ago, I’ve been blown away by the level of care here. The staff and vet techs are nothing short of phenomenal, they balance exemplary customer service with a level of efficiency that is truly rare. My cat has been recently diagnosed with heart failure a few days ago and it has been an incredibly stressful time. However, this team stepped up when we needed it most, seeing her the same day to treat another pleural effusion and provide immediate relief while her cardiologist was unavailable. Dr. Wharrie was a total hero throughout the process. He is professional, deeply compassionate, and took the time to ensure we had all the medical information necessary to make the best decisions for her care. It is so clear that he and the entire vet team genuinely love the animals they treat. Those in the medical field are often unsung heroes, and I cannot thank this team enough for their tireless dedication and hard work. If you love your pets, take them here!

Fantastic experience: The veterinarian was very thorough. She let me know know what to do for my pet. Made sure that we have the right medicine and gave us the pricing before we had any procedures done! Dr Shailor was very thorough during my dogs annual exam and made some very caring recommendations regarding my dogs oral health. I’m very grateful for Dr Shailor ‘s services.

Negative experience: Finally was asked to bring in a stool sample after almost 4 years of back and forth of me asking if she needed this from when she was a kitten. When we got there front desk ladies laughed and did not even know where her documents were. At least her results came back normal.

Fantastic experience: The experience was great right up until checking out. We were told to take a seat and out invoice would be done in a minute and we would be called to the desk. Took 25 minutes before I finally had enough of waiting. I approached the desk asked for my bill. They looked it up and we paid and left. They had 4 or 5 people at the counter needs improvement

Fantastic experience: I have been bringing my dogs to Dr. Scott Heckerling at Middlesex County Animal Hospital since 2008, shortly after they first opened. Over the last 18 years, Dr. Heckerling has cared for four of my dogs, and I wouldn't trust anyone else with their health. He truly goes above and beyond for his patients. For example, when one of my dogs had a persistent skin issue, Dr. Heckerling took extra time after our appointment to do deep research, providing us with a successful, specialized treatment plan. I especially want to highlight his compassion regarding end-of-life care for senior dogs. He is incredibly helpful and empathetic during those heartbreaking times, making a difficult process much easier to bear. The staff is fantastic—highly professional, well-trained, and always well-informed. It is rare to find a practice where you feel this much peace of mind. Highly recommended!

Her tech assistant, Jess, was kind, funny, and overall great! Thank you Jess and Dr. Abou-Ezzi!! The front desk staff and the tech that brought me into the room were wonderful as well! The atmosphere of this hospital is calming and you can feel that everyone truly loves animals! Hands down the best general practice animal hospital in New England. I wouldn’t recommend anywhere else! This visit was a bit of an emergency, they created a plan with estimates and within a couple of days my Carlitos was recovering from surgery! Thank you to the whole team! Especially Dr Chamberlain and Bailey!! I also want to mention that I travel over an hour to still have all my babies seen there because I only trust them with my precious family! I am forever grateful Carlitos thanks you also. Luna and Estella loves you too!

Positive experience: I have to add here that the clinic itself and staff are very nice, caring to your pet. Office itself is also clean, professional and overall no issues. It’s more on costs being the issue… for me personally. I do like this Vet clinic and have been taking my dogs there for a few years now, but, the prices keep creeping up. Office visit increased & not sure what u get for the price as they charge for each thing they do. Everything has a charge and you get slammed at end of appointment. It can be shocking how high the bill is. Ears checked and you’re charged just for them sticking Qtip in and then charged again for testing it onsite. Why isn’t it just one charge? You won’t walk out for anything for less than a few hundred bucks on average. It’s a shame but I’m going to need to look for something more affordable. A quoted cost always blows up to more…. Every time. I also feel rushed at each visit and they charge a lot for meds. They don’t give time for you to say no. Speak up at end checking out if you don’t want some meds. Hand them back to remove off bill. Be sure and ask charges before they say they’re going to do something. Avoid unnecessary tests or ask what is outcome before you say ok. Sometimes regardless of test, it isn’t going to help your pet regardless. You will be billed if you don’t ask costs and it’s a shocker at end. I hold off now on my pet if I can which is a shame really or I pick and choose if it’s important enough to take my pet in.

Fantastic experience: These people have cared for my dogs for over 6yrs now and I cannot be more grateful. Particularly Dr. Heckerling and his team he works so closely with. But special kudos to the people who work in the front and who handle all sorts of questions, concerns and problems. Finding a great vet office is so difficult these days and I am so grateful I joined their family years ago. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: I have brought my dogs to Middlesex specifically Dr. Heckerling for over 20 years and recently moved 2 hours away and still drive them to have them under his care. There is NO ONE BETTER than Dr. Heckerling anywhere in the Boston area. He has seen it all and has unbelievable expertise, compassion and heart. If there was a perfect veterinarian, he defines it. His love for animals shines through in his care as well as Mary who loves our animals like her own. We love this team and cannot say enough about this clinic.

Negative experience: I’ve been here for many years with my pets. Overall, my primary vet is knowledgeable and the staff quite helpful and prices are reasonable. However, this week, I came in with my dog who is pregnant with puppies for an ultrasound on a last min appointment with a new vet. It was unfortunate that my dog’s pregnancy was non viable and the vet did explain to me that my dog’s puppies were being reabsorbed. However, her first reaction and response to me (while still in a state of shock) was let’s spay your dog. Not once did she mention that there could be medication to help my dog expel the blobs in her belly to make her better. She only warned me that my dog may never recover so best to arrange for a spay. It was only the next day that she called and mentioned that there could be medication to prescribe for my dog and said to refer me to another clinic all the way in NH (2hr from where I live). After some shock, I called back and asked the clinic if they have ever encountered this before in all of their history and whether they have prescribed such medication before. The receptionist did not answer my questions and kept talking over me. In the end, I asked directly if I could request medication from the vet, and the vet had to admit that this is beyond her expertise and she could prescribe the medication but did not feel comfortable and it was a slip up on her part to not mention that medication was a treatment option. I have had a non viable pregnancy before myself a few years ago and I’m sure my human doctor would not have immediately suggested spaying me because my fetus did not have a heartbeat. I felt stung by the vet’s poor bedside manner and her lack of empathy towards me and my dog. The focus should be to help my dog recover first, and perhaps owning up on the day itself that all of this is beyond her veterinary expertise. I will not be seeing this vet again.

Fantastic experience: One of my dogs is under Dr. Heckerling's care for pneumonia. After a particularly rough morning, I called MCAH, concerned about her breathing. They took us in, did a thorough exam, and are helping her back to health. I cannot strongly recommend MCAH highly enough for all your companions' medical needs. They take the time to listen to you, are focused on your pet's well being, and care for them as if they were their own. I have no doubt that they have saved her life, and I am truly grateful for everyone at MCAH

Fantastic experience: Dr. Upton is great with my nervous/anxious dog. She gets down on the floor and my dog just thinks it's a play time. They also allow us access to a "safe space" as my pup doesn't like other dogs. (She's not aggressive just very nervous). Dr. Chamberlain handles my 75 pound pit mix dog (with ease) who doesn't like going to the vet. Our last vet wanted him drugged prior to the appointment. She is a godsend! I am so happy we found middlesex county animal hospital for our dogs!

Fantastic experience: I brought my dog in unscheduled when she injured herself in the backyard and was unable to stand, and the staff at Middlesex County Animal Hospital saw us immediately. The techs we interacted with were extremely helpful, compassionate, and efficient, and Dr. Shailor communicated her differential diagnosis and next steps to refine that diagnosis with precision and empathy. We're still trying to figure out exactly what happened, but I feel like I was included in developing the plan forward, and the communication has been excellent so far. We're fairly new to the practice, having just gone for the first time in May for my dog's annual check-up, but their excellent treatment of both of us in a somewhat emergency situation had made me a loyal client.

Fantastic experience: My dog had been suffering from allergies and irritated skin, and discussing this at my monthly visit with the groomer she recommended a vet visit to be sure it was just allergies and to see if they could provide more relief other than Zyrtec, the team at Middlesex County Animal Hospital jumped into action. They treated him with such care and compassion, even giving him a medicated bath for relief. Within just hours, the difference was incredible—he was comfortable, happy, and back to himself. They knew exactly what was wrong and fixed it fast. I’m beyond grateful for their kindness and expertise! I wish I remembered the name of the nurse who cared for him, she was AMAZING with him! Thank you!!

Fantastic experience: Took my dog here about a week ago. This has to be one of the best and most professional animal hospital I have ever been to. Everyone was so nice and polite. Would highly recommend to anyone. Update August 2025 since it’s been like 7 years. Not close to me anymore and a hike to drive to, but I still go here. This place helped save her life like a year ago and recently helped huge in a dental extraction. Still amazing and I treasure this place. Dr.Shailor is one of a kind

Fantastic experience: My dog Gus was very sick and Dr. Shailor had him come in at end of hours, took samples and ran tests. She and her assistants were able to quickly determine what was happening, started him on RX and he’s feeling better within a day . My dog has had several issues common with his breed. Dr. Shailor has been able to sort through these complexities every time. She follows up and checks in . The entire staff is kind and caring and I’m glad his health is managed there.

Fantastic experience: I had an appt for my young cat, but my older cat was not well, so I showed up with her. The staff took it in stride, and Dr. Heckerling gave her an exam and did tests on her. They are always so kind and take such good care of my companion animals.

Fantastic experience: Its waiting area is spacious but the parking lot is too small and its tough to get a slot at anytime! The staff are mostly busy but looks friendly. The cost is somehow higher than what I expected. It could be awesome if each patient has a portal for an easy communication with the crew.

They communicate effectively, offer a wide range of services in-house, have competitive pricing, don’t make me feel guilty for asking about the prices of things and whether there are cheaper alternative approaches to treatment, and are compassionate and caring. Getting appointments at the height of everyone-adopted-new-pets-during-COVID-lockdowns wasn’t the easiest but that is no longer a problem and getting appointments is again fairly easy. I travel from Medford because I appreciate the quality of care that my dogs and I receive at MCAH.

All of the staff are so good with my dog, who used to get freaked out going to the vet, and they listen to me when I make suggestions. It's a really comfortable, comforting experience for both of us. They genuinely care. I just wish they were open on Saturdays too! Highly recommend them and am willing to drive 30 min to go there because I value them so much.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful people. We have brought out kitties here for consults and health needs, and they have always been extremely understanding, professional and prompt. The vets and techs have excellent bedside manners and we always felt understood and respected. Our kitties, no great fans of the vet, still enjoyed their time with these kind souls. We will return later this year for another check up and I know they will make a stressful day better through their efforts, insights and compassion. I couldn't recommend this practice enough!
