Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center: Reviews
Negative experience: Worst vet experience that I have had in a while. If I could give this vet a -12? It’d be a -100. My sister and I received a referral to this establishment due to our dog needing to see a neurologist ASAP for a spinal concern that the doctors could have handled with surgery (24 to 48 hour window for when our dog’s legs grew paralyzed). We arrived to the ED around 6:30 p.m., checked in (which, given, was a smooth process), gave our dog’s medical history, they took our dog, and then had us sit in the waiting area for two hours. Once called, my sister and I received the news that: 1. A CT scan will not show everything needed so we HAVE to go to either Raleigh, Charlotte, or Charleston for an MRI (we drove almost two hours to see them to BEGIN WITH and the doctor said, “if you could make that trip tonight…,” which would put us out even longer). On top of this, I even verified with another veterinarian that said that the CT scan WOULD show the problem needed to start surgery. Funniest joke I’ve heard at the expense of my dog. 2. Gave us 5 options varying in prices, with the cheapest option being “humane euthanasia” as the doctor said. Also, in these prices, the vet did not disclose that surgery/CT would be included and made it seem that a CT scan alone would be 6-7k. They made it seeme as if we were running out of options and FAST only because they wanted an MRI. It took our primary vet to say that it would include CT and surgery, to which we have already picked the dog up. 3. We told the doctor/nurse that we would be taking our dog back to our primary vet, they agreed with our decision, and when I went to pick my dog up THIS MORNING: the environment and attitudes toward us shifted completely. Is this because we weren’t “willing” to pay a hefty sum that wasn’t fully communicated to us? Is it because we weren’t the happiest customers given that our dog is growing more uncomfortable by the minute and is stressed out? Is it because we weren’t believing everything that came out of this vet’s mouth because we could prove otherwise? You tell me. Took our dog to our primary vet this afternoon, our primary vet is no short of embarrassed for the way this establishment has treated us. Our options now went from a surgery with 80-20% chance of our dog being able to walk again, to, “If this doesn’t work, your dog will be in a wheelchair only IF after his medicinal treatment will be able to use the bathroom on his own.” We have wasted our time, we have wasted our dog’s time, we have wasted money waiting for an answer of, “Hur dur can’t help you without selling an arm or a leg, spinning on a pole somewhere, or traveling through the desert on a horse with no name that doesn’t even respond to clicking.” (Not a direct quote obviously but you get the idea). This is beyond ridiculous, this is beyond unfair, this is an injustice even though no laws were broken. My family and I would have jumped on the opportunity to pay 6-7k for our baby if we would have known that surgery would be included. Worst place, smells of swamp, and smells of disappointment coming out of those sliding doors.
Negative experience: ’m sharing our recent experience so other pet owners in the community are aware and so we can hopefully push for better emergency veterinary options in this area. Our dog Lucy recently had a medical emergency, and our experience here was extremely upsetting. During the visit, Dr. Emily Garrett supported putting Lucy down without running any diagnostic tests to determine what was actually wrong. As pet owners, hearing a recommendation like that without even attempting testing was shocking and devastating. Thankfully, Lucy is still with us. After leaving, we were able to find a rehabilitation facility in Leland that is now helping her recover and giving us hope that she may be able to walk again. This experience left us deeply concerned about the lack of emergency veterinary options available in this area. When pets are in crisis, families should have access to more than one place for urgent care and the ability to seek a second opinion before making life-altering decisions. I truly hope our community begins to recognize the need for additional emergency veterinary services so that other families and pets do not face the same situation
Fantastic experience: Our local vet referred us to ECVMC after several visits with our big guy. He hadn't been doing well and we were having trouble nailing down the issue. Long story short, after a long day at ECVMC we received a very unexpected diagnosis. Heartbreaking as it was, Doctor Hooper and the staff where great. They were caring, professional, and very understanding. Thank you Doctor Hooper. We appreciate everything you did. SP & RP Our Boxers, Benny and Joon
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We’re truly sorry that you received such an unexpected and heartbreaking diagnosis, and we’re grateful to know that our team was able to offer care, clarity, and compassion during such a difficult day. Supporting families through moments like this is incredibly important to us, and your kind words mean a great deal.
Fantastic experience: Far and away the most exceptional medical experience I have ever had. There was so much positive about what we went through I literally do not know where to start. From the quick response, the care our cat received, the open and frequent communication from Dr. Ruffner and Dr. Cooper, to the knowledgeable and kind staff, I could literally go on. What an incredible resource we have here in Wilmington!!
We’re truly grateful for your incredibly kind words. It means so much to hear that your experience—from the quick response to the care your cat received and the clear communication throughout—left such a strong impression. Our team works hard to provide compassionate, knowledgeable support in every situation, and it’s wonderful to know that came through during your visit. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
Fantastic experience: Last week my 6 yo daschund had to have back surgery for a calcified disk. Dr Alleva and her team performed the surgery and I’m Happy to say that my boy is walking gingerly, and in the process of healing. Because Cooper was in a lot of pain when I brought him in and required hospitalization before surgery he was spoiled by all the tech that took care of him. I highly recommend this facility for animal emergency . A big thank you to all who took care of him.
Thank you for sharing your experience and kind words! We’re so glad to hear that Cooper is beginning to walk and is on the path to healing after his back surgery. It’s wonderful that our team could provide comfort and attentive care while he was in pain and hospitalized. Your trust in us means a lot, and we truly appreciate your recommendation. A big thank you from all of us for letting us care for Cooper!
Fantastic experience: My dog got hit by a car on a sunday afternoon and I brought him here. Hands down the best expierence I've ever had with a vets Office. These folks that work here are very kind caring and curtious to anyone who came through those doors. I would give 10 stars if I could. Thanks for taking great care of my pup
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for your incredibly kind words. We’re so sorry your pup had to go through such a scary situation, but we’re truly glad you brought him to us and that our team could be there to help. Hearing that you felt cared for and supported by our staff means the world to us. Your appreciation and trust are deeply valued, and we’re wishing your pup a smooth and speedy recovery.
Fantastic experience: Willy, my diabetic cat, was hypoglycemic and Dr. Hooper helped me with getting him checked out. I love ECVMC and have had several of my cats there in the past for various things! Thanking everyone for help this weekend with Willy!
Thank you for your wonderful feedback! We are glad we could help Willy during his hypoglycemic episode and that Dr. Hooper was able to assist you in getting him the care he needed. We truly appreciate your kind words about ECVMC and are honored that you have trusted us with the care of several of your cats. Your continued confidence in our team means so much to us. We're grateful we could be there for you and Willy this weekend, and we hope he is feeling much better now.
Fantastic experience: Our visit was very good. Our pup suddenly started acting off and of course, we were very concerned. The team was empathetic and quick to see her. She's doing well and very most grateful for the fast service and professional/compassionate care. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your experience! We know how scary it can be when your pup suddenly isn’t acting like herself, and we’re so glad our team was able to see her quickly and provide compassionate, professional care. It’s wonderful to hear she’s doing well — that’s always our greatest goal. We truly appreciate your trust and kind words!
Fantastic experience: Everyone was wonderful! So friendly, caring and professional. Took the time to answer all of my questions and put my mind at ease. They made everything seamless!
We’re so glad our team could make your visit seamless and put your mind at ease. Providing friendly, caring, and professional care while answering all your questions is exactly what we strive for, and we truly appreciate your trust. Thank you for your kind words and amazing review!
Fantastic experience: When our dog suffered a sudden, life-threatening emergency in the middle of the night, we rushed to this hospital scared we might lose him. From the moment we walked through the doors, we were met with calm, compassion, and absolute professionalism. The front desk team treated us with such kindness. The veterinary technicians were attentive, gentle, and clearly deeply invested in his care. The two veterinarians who treated him were second to none. Scooby spent several days hospitalized, and not once did we feel in the dark. We received frequent updates, honest communication, and reassurance when we needed it most. Every single person we encountered treated our sweet boy as if he were their own. Because of this incredible team, Scooby is home with us today. Thank you for your skill, your compassion and dedication. You didn’t just treat our dog, you saved a member of our family.
Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt experience. We’re overjoyed to hear that Scooby is home and doing well! Providing calm, compassionate, and attentive care during emergencies is always our priority, and it means so much to know that our team — from the front desk to the veterinarians and techs — could support both Scooby and your family every step of the way. Your kind words remind us why we do what we do: treating every pet like a cherished member of the family.
Fantastic experience: Fortunately and unfortunately, having to take our dog to the hospital is stressful and frightening for him and us too. Saying that we have the utmost confidence in your hospital staff. From the receptionist through all the staff up to and including the doctors, we can’t thank them all enough for their professionalism, empathy and knowledge. We have several hospitals nearer to us in Myrtle Beach that we have gone to in the past but I will go nowhere else but to you. When I worked for a MB veterinarian establishment, for emergencies I would provide a list of hospitals however I always recommended you all. Thank you for taking care of our babies. I know I’m like other pet owners and we want them to have the best care and that’s you guys! ❤️
Fantastic experience: Urgent issue with my cat, the intake process was quick and I was kept informed of her statuses throughout the 45-hour stay. Staff was compassionate and I believe my cat got the best care possible.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re so glad the intake process was smooth and that you were kept informed throughout your cat’s stay. Providing compassionate care and ensuring your cat receives the best possible treatment is always our priority, and it means a lot to hear that reflected in your visit.
Fantastic experience: We had a difficult situation and the doctors and staff were excellent. The whole experience was exhausting and ECVMA helped us maneuver through with grace and hope. Our fella is back to his bouncy self.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re glad our doctors and staff could provide excellent care and support during a difficult situation. It means a lot to us to be there for you and your pet when it matters most.
Fantastic experience: My dog just had his TPLO surgery last week, and the staff at ECVMC are exceptional. They communicated every step of his procedure along the way and Dr. Schlaeppi called each day over the weekend to check on him. Our experience exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend ECVMC to anyone who is looking for the best care for their animal.
We’re thrilled to hear that your dog’s TPLO surgery experience exceeded your expectations. Clear communication and attentive follow-up—especially those weekend check-ins—are so important to us, and we’re glad that made a difference for you. We truly appreciate your recommendation and are honored to provide the care your pet deserves. Wishing your pup a smooth and speedy recovery! Thank you so much for your wonderful review!
Positive experience: We recently had to bring our older dog to this ER and overall the staff was kind and professional. The front desk was friendly and helpful and our pet was triaged quickly. Our dog has anxiety and a heart condition and they were accommodating in allowing me to stay with him most of the time, which I truly appreciated. Where my concern lies is with how their system operates. Taking a patient history at the front desk without privacy feels inappropriate. People are there because their beloved pet is sick or injured and emotions are already high. What was more difficult was the process of separating pets from their owners early and having them wait in kennels in a loud critical care area before being seen. I understand this may be designed for efficiency, but the human animal bond is incredibly important. In an environment where most patients are already stressed, this process seems to increase that stress for both pets and their owners. Many people who work in veterinary medicine do so because of their love for animals. It was surprising to see a system that removes that comfort so early in the visit. Of course pets will need to go to the back for diagnostics or treatment when necessary, but it seems reasonable that vitals, history, and the initial exam could happen in a room with the owner present before that step. I have been to many clinics and ER facilities and this was the first time I experienced this type of workflow. Because of this process, I will do my best to avoid returning unless absolutely necessary.
Fantastic experience: I have been in and out of this ER for years with 3+ dogs and I don’t have a single bad thing to say. They genuinely care and take every single precaution. They are patient, thorough and very smart. I genuinely don’t know what I would do without them. Especially Dr. Holmer and her tech, William.
It truly means the world to us that you’ve relied on our ER team through the care of your dogs and that you’ve consistently had positive experiences. Knowing that you feel our team is patient, thorough, and genuinely caring is the highest compliment we could receive. We’ll be sure to share your kind words with the doctor and technician—they’ll be so touched to know the impact they’ve had. We’re always here for you and your pups whenever you need us. Thank you so much for your incredible trust and loyalty over the years.
Fantastic experience: I can not begin to express how wonderful and accommodating the staff is here. Not only did they quickly diagnose the issue with my pet but they accurately performed life saving surgery that has relieved so much stress and pain out of not only my dogs life but my own. I couldn’t recommend them more.
We’re incredibly glad we could quickly diagnose your pet’s issue and provide life-saving surgery that brought relief to both your dog and you. Your kind words mean a lot to our team, and knowing we could make such a positive impact during a stressful time is truly rewarding.
Fantastic experience: We are so grateful for your support and care for our Ivy! Dr Toombs and the whole staff are so caring, knowledgeable and truly love their work. Thank you to all of you.
It's always a pleasure to serve clients like you and thank you for your kind words! We’re so glad Ivy felt well cared for and that our team could provide the support and compassion you needed. It means so much to hear that our dedication and love for what we do made a difference for your family. We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to care for Ivy!
Fantastic experience: Rushed two cats here when we knew one of them had eaten a ribbon an hour after it happened. Unfortunately picked the wrong cat first who had to endure "upchuck treatment" for no good reason when his sister was the culprit. Staff was great, courteous, and calm when my brain was spiraling. While I never want to see any of you again, I'm so glad you were all there.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re glad our team could stay calm, courteous, and supportive while you navigated a stressful situation. It’s completely understandable how overwhelming it can feel in the moment, and we’re happy we could be there to help—even if the circumstances weren’t ideal. We’re grateful you trusted us with your cats’ care when it mattered most.
Fantastic experience: Dr Burkett and all of the staff (starting from check in through the entire process) were amazing. My 10 year old lab "Duck" had a tragic accident and everyone handled him with love and respect. Ultimately we had to make the decision to put down our beloved Duck because his injuries were so severe. Even Halo and Wings cremation service was lovely. I am thankful for Dr. Burkett and her team caring for my boy during his final hours. Duck and I are forever grateful!
I am so deeply sorry for the loss of Duck. Thank you for sharing such heartfelt words about your experience. We’re honored that Dr. Burkett and our team could care for him with love and respect during his final hours. Saying goodbye after such a tragic accident is incredibly painful, and it means so much to know you felt supported throughout the process. We’re also grateful that Halo and Wings Cremation Service provided comfort during that difficult time. Please know that Duck was treated with the compassion and dignity he deserved, and our hearts are with you as you navigate this loss.
Fantastic experience: Shout out to Eastern Carolina Emergency Vet for unblocking my sweet kitty, ChoCho, and performing a successful PU surgery to hopefully give him a long and happy life. A special shout out to Allison Putterman who continuously checked up on ChoCho throughout his recovery ❤️ The kindness, care, compassion, and dedication she showed us was second to none! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re so glad ChoCho is on the road to recovery and that his PU surgery went successfully! Allison and the entire team at Eastern Carolina Emergency Veterinary Hospital are dedicated to providing compassionate, attentive care, and it means so much to know that their kindness and support made a difference for both you and ChoCho. Wishing him a long, happy, and healthy life!
Fantastic experience: Caring, understanding and highly skilled. The surgery that was provided for our puppy to us was life saving. The phone calls to check on our puppy the days after surgery were greatly appreciated. All the staff were extremely professional. You can have confidence and trust knowing you are at the right veterinarian clinic.
Thank you for your heartfelt review. We’re so glad we could provide life-saving care for your puppy and that our team’s follow-up calls helped you feel supported during recovery. Providing compassionate, skilled, and professional care is at the heart of what we do, and it means so much to know you felt confident and trusted in our clinic.
Fantastic experience: I can’t thank the Drs and staff enough for the wonderful care they gave my puppy Sophie. She ended up needing to be hospitalized overnight. Dr Ruffner was amazing, she kept me updated which kept this worried dog mom calm and at ease.
Amanda, we’re so glad Sophie received the care she needed and that Dr. Ruffner’s updates helped keep you calm and reassured during her overnight stay. Providing compassionate care for pets—and peace of mind for their humans—is always our priority. We’re thrilled Sophie is doing well and truly appreciate your kind words! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Fantastic experience: We went in on a Sunday night after our pup tore her paw pad; it seemed much worse than it actually was but ECVR took great care of her and sent us on our way in about an hour and a half. We were very grateful for their care!
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re glad we could provide quick and attentive care for your pup, even on a Sunday night, and get her safely back home in a timely manner. It’s wonderful to hear you felt well supported—your trust means a lot to us!
Fantastic experience: My Dachshund injured his back. Thankfully I have never had to go to an emergency vet. We were in and out quickly with an injection and all the required meds. They were upfront with the projected cost of the visit. The front desk and triage were very friendly and helpful. I will definitely go back for any emergency needs and will recommend to other pet owners.
Jaime, we’re glad we could provide prompt, compassionate care for your dachshund and make the visit as smooth as possible. Clear communication, friendly support, and transparency with costs are priorities for our team, and we’re thrilled that came through for you. We truly appreciate your trust and recommendation, and we’re always here for you and your pet in case of emergencies. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Negative experience: The two-star rating is not a reflection of the staff, who were genuinely kind and professional throughout our visit. My rating is based solely on the cost and overall efficiency of the experience. We were charged for a copious number of itemized services, many of which felt excessive given our dog’s symptoms and the clarity around what needed to be investigated. Although we were fairly confident about the necessary course of action, we were told that a full physical examination fee was required, and each test was separately itemized and billed. In total, we spent over $1,000 and were at the facility for approximately four hours. Ultimately, the services provided consisted of a physical exam, bloodwork, and an X-ray. The wait time was especially frustrating, as the clinic did not appear particularly busy. After meeting with the veterinarian, we were told it would be another 15 minutes, but we ended up waiting an additional hour. We arrived around 10:00 p.m., and our dog was not discharged until nearly 2:00 a.m. While I fully understand that our pets are family and that quality veterinary care is important, this experience felt unnecessarily expensive and inefficient. I believe the pricing could have been more reasonable and the overnight process significantly better managed.
Fantastic experience: This review is late, but very deserved. Losing my dog was incredibly hard, and Alexa’s compassion truly stood out during that time. She went above and beyond for me and my family and treated us with genuine care and kindness. Even now, I remember her as a standout asset among the staff. Thank you, Alexa, for making a difficult experience a little easier.
Julian, thank you for sharing your kind words. We’re deeply sorry for your loss and are honored that Alexa was able to provide compassion and support during such a difficult time. We’ll be sure to share your heartfelt message with her—she and our entire team strive to make a difference for families during these challenging moments. Your feedback means so much to us.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Hooper was amazing with our dog Sophie! She was calm and clear and let us know exactly what was happening (and what needed to happen). The service was great too. It was a quick turnaround. Very professional! I definitely recommend them!
Thank you for your kind review and recommendation. We are pleased to hear that Dr. Hooper provided clear and compassionate care for Sophie and that your experience was efficient and professional. We truly appreciate your trust and support.
Fantastic experience: I’m so very thankful for the kindness they showed. They were so patient with Stella’s anxiousness, and also calmed my nerves. They were very thorough, up front about pricing, and honest. Stella is already doing much better and although I hope to not need their services, I know they’re the best in the business and am glad to know they’re there if an event arises. Years ago I went to another emergency vet at Myrtle, and this experience was undeniably a much better one.
We’re thrilled to hear that Stella felt comfortable and that we could help put both her—and you—at ease. Being thorough, transparent, and compassionate is at the heart of what we do, and it’s wonderful to know it made a difference for you both. We’re honored to be your trusted resource should any future needs arise. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Fantastic experience: Had a great experience when bringing our dog here. Very kind, helpful, and accommodating. We left with a treatment plan and next steps, if needed.
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re glad our team could be kind, helpful, and accommodating, and that you left with a clear treatment plan for your dog. We’re always here to support you and your pet!

Fantastic experience: Our recent emergency visit went smoothly thanks to staff here. Explanations were thorough and I felt like my dog was taken good care of. They did everything necessary.
Michael, we’re glad to hear that your emergency visit went smoothly and that our team provided thorough explanations and attentive care for your dog. Ensuring pets receive everything they need while keeping owners informed is very important to us, and we truly appreciate your kind feedback. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Fantastic experience: Hands down the best vet care I have experienced. Not only are they always patient and caring when I have called in with questions, but they reviewed a follow up picture of my kittens condition, and called me back for assurance; even though they really aren’t obligated when it’s for my own peace of mind. They promptly cared for my kitten and kept me calm and reassured through every step. Every staff member I encountered treated me with compassion, and treated my kitten with the care she desperately needed and deserved. I hope to never need them again but if I do, I will be making the drive. They have wholeheartedly earned my trust.
We’re honored to have been there for your kitten and to provide support and reassurance during such a stressful time. It means a great deal to know that our team’s compassion, patience, and care made a difference for both you and your pet. Your trust in us is truly appreciated, and we’re always here if you need us. Thank you for your heartfelt feedback.
Fantastic experience: We arrived in an hour or two after midnight. A team of two techs carried our pup from the car into the hospital. We checked in and shortly afterward a Vet looked over our pup and determined she strained her knee and her back. They were very kind to us as we were extremely concerned with our pup. They prescribed her medicine and gave her painkiller. This is such an excellent medical facility filled with professional and caring people. This is a gem in our area that we have to have for a go-to hospital for your pets. Mia says the customer service was impeccable Thank you!❤️
We’re thrilled we could provide prompt, compassionate care for your pup—even in the middle of the night. It means so much to hear that our team’s professionalism and kindness made a stressful situation easier. We’ll be sure to let Mia know her “impeccable” customer service made an impression! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Fantastic experience: Everyone at the clinic was friendly, compassionate and helpful. Our kitty was seen quickly, and the vet was great; explained everything and relieved our concerns. We are grateful that you folks are there.
We’re glad our team could provide compassionate, helpful care and address your concerns while seeing your kitty promptly. It means a lot to us to be there for pets and their families, and we truly appreciate your trust. Thank you for your kind words and amazing review!
Fantastic experience: Everyone from the one who welcomed to the doctor I saw were amazing. Everyone was super kind and thorough in helping my pup after having a seizure. The doctor helped me be at ease and educated me about the situation. Highly recommended!!!
Christine, it's always a pleasure to serve clients like you. Thank you for your kind words and recommendation. We’re glad our team could provide thorough, compassionate care for your pup after the seizure and help you feel at ease. Providing education and support during stressful situations is very important to us, and we truly appreciate your trust.
Fantastic experience: We went in and met with Dr. Pfeffer for a consultation and he was great. So informative, patient and gave us all the time we needed. Never felt rushed. We will definitely be bringing our pup back to see him when we’re ready to have the surgery done that our pup needs.
Dawn, thank you so much for sharing your experience! We’re thrilled to hear that Dr. Pfeffer took the time to be thorough, patient, and informative, and that you never felt rushed. We appreciate your trust and look forward to caring for your pup when you’re ready for the next steps.
Fantastic experience: We drove from North Myrtle to Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center as our town vet was not equipped for a procedure our dog needed asap. Our vet did call to say we were coming and to share our dogs medical records. They were awesome! Dr. Garret performed the procedure and even prescribed an herbal medication for his condition which has indeed helped. The whole staff from check in to discharge is awesome. Even the cost was very reasonable. This is our place to go for emergency care or even speciality care now. Thank you to Dr. Garret and the entire staff !
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! We’re so glad Dr. Garret and our team could provide the urgent care your dog needed and that the treatment has helped. It means a lot to know you felt supported every step of the way, and we’re honored to be your trusted choice for emergency and specialty care.
Positive experience: My dog sustained a laceration around his eye. The intake process was efficient. The vet examined my dog shortly after arrival, provided a treatment plans and an hour and six stitches later, we went home. The waiting room/lobby area is large. The only issue was the front desk staff did not address two blood smears on the floor. Would have given 5 stars if lobby area was cleaned.
Myra, thank you for sharing your experience. We’re so glad your dog received prompt care and is on the mend after his treatment. We truly appreciate your feedback about the lobby and apologize for the oversight. Wishing you both all the best as he continues to heal!
Fantastic experience: They are so good. I think lab and x-ray prices are probably close to or the same as my regular vet, and results are immediate. We need a 24/7 emergency vet hospital in Brunswick County.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback! We’re glad you had a positive experience with us and found our care and diagnostic services timely and valuable. Your point about the need for a 24/7 emergency vet hospital in Brunswick County is heard loud and clear — having around‑the‑clock care closer to home would be a huge benefit for many pet families in that area. We truly appreciate you taking the time to share both your experience and your perspective!
Fantastic experience: We had to take our large dog Maggie to the emergency vet on a Saturday after she got into the trash. All of the front desk staff were super nice, helpful, and understanding. We waited in the waiting room for about 15 minutes before a lady came from the back. She took the time to make sure Maggie was comfortable and explained to me what was going to happen before taking her back. I waited for about 45 minutes before the doctor called me back and told me the plan. After I talked with the doctor it was about 20 minutes before I got Maggie back because she was getting fluids and meds. A nice lady named Taylor brought Maggie out to me and sat in the waiting room with me while she explained in detail what the next few days would look like. I asked lots of questions and Taylor answered with patience. Before leaving Taylor told me how long she would be there that evening and to not hesitate to call if I had any questions or concerns. I left feeling very understood and Maggie started feeling better later that evening! I would definitely recommend this clinic!!
Stephanie, thank you for sharing your experience with Maggie. We’re so glad our team could provide clear communication, compassionate care, and support throughout her visit. Taylor and the rest of our staff take pride in making both pets and their owners feel comfortable and informed, and it means a lot to hear that it made a difference for you. We’re happy Maggie is feeling better and truly appreciate your recommendation!
Negative experience: SAVE YOUR PET, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Brought my pregnant female in Thursday, she was due to delivery the next day. She was a little weak, large litter. I was thinking she may need a c-section. They ran a blood test and did x-ray and ultrasound, my price was $910. Steep, but I was willing to pay anything to save my dog. They came back in to tell me she needed a c-section due to kidney function. Quoted me $4000-$7000. I wavered at that price and decided to speak to my fiancé about taking her elsewhere. Less than 10min. They came back and said my dog had died and they tried CPR but she was brain dead. They didn’t even attempt to save her 6 healthy puppies!! They brought my dog to me gasping for air as she died in my arms!! No compassion!!! Heartless bunch!! All they were concerned with was keeping someone around us to make sure we payed their outlandish bill!! I walked in with a living breathing pregnant momma, and walked out with an outrageous bill, the body of my beloved girl and her unborn puppies!! I will be telling everyone I know to stay far away from this place if you love your baby, as they killed my girl! They are heartless and only concerned with the money!!!!
Negative experience: The worst! $5, 978.57, for what. 11-6, $350.00 for first exam. Surgery scheduled for 12-5. The cancer grew fast, i called multiple times, no answer, or returned my messeges, or emails. Took Odie in on 11-21, they surgery would be performed that night or Monday, neither happened. Saturday, 11-22 i went there very early to see Odie, he was in terrible shape, i made won of the hardest decision i have had to make. They still tried to get more money! They said it would extend his life for another six weeks. They tried to sell a cast of his pawn for more money. NEVER, EVER TAKE YOUR PET THERE.
Negative experience: The doctor at this vet ER told me to take my 3-year-old dog and surrender. It to a nonprofit now she knew for pomeranians because I didn't have $4000.4 deposit At their e r room for an emergency c section on a dog that had been in labor for over twenty four hours and had three puppies inside. They said, one was dead. There were still two heartbeats, but they couldn't help me or fix my dog.Because I didn't have four thousand dollars as a deposit for the surgery. My question is, how is it possible for this? If an hour and a 1 after standing in the lobby of this veterinary ER and throwing a fit and being loud, the same doctor told me that she called her friend at another E. R and she said she could do the surgery for me right away. I wanted to be known that I paid $1795 to have a sea section on my pomeranian, and had all 3 puppies alive when I left the new E. R so take what you will out of it. $4000 for a $1700 surgery. At another e r is way out of the scope of making a dollar on top of putting a note on an account under me and my dog's name. That she advised me to surrender. My dog.
Fantastic experience: We are so great full for Dr.Ruffin & the entire staff at eastern Carolina veterinary hospital. They stepped in and saved our German Shepherd (Tzar) life when his stomach flipped over at 1:00 a.m. Tzar had great care during his 5 day stay with 24hr care, he is home now and doing great. Thank you all again so very much.Pic of my boy snoozing at his home.
Brian, thank you for sharing your experience. Providing prompt, thorough care for Tzar during such a serious emergency was our priority, and we’re so glad he’s recovering well at home. Dr. Ruffin and the team truly appreciate your trust and kind words.
Fantastic experience: I would like to thank everyone who helped us this past Sunday. My 15 year old rescue Westin died in my arms on the way to you from Southport. Your lobby was full of patients but you immediately rushed us in to a room with no hesitation. The doctor checked his heart and confirmed he had passed. You packed him lovingly into a covered box, carried him out to our car so I could take him home for cremation at our vet. I can’t thank you enough for how you handled this most difficult time for me. Again….thank you!
Donna, thank you for your kind words. We know all too well how difficult it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet. We are glad we were able to provide some comfort during this tough process and please don't hesitate to give us a call should you need anything.
Fantastic experience: Our 18 month old puppy ate a toxic lidocaine patch. The staff was very calm and informative and took the best care of our fur baby. All is well now.
Nancy, we’re so glad to hear your puppy is doing well! Thank you for sharing your experience. Our team knows how scary situations like this can be, so we’re happy we could stay calm, provide clear guidance, and take good care of your fur baby. Sending lots of tail wags and hugs for a full, happy recovery!
Fantastic experience: Went here for the first time and was very pleased. The staff were very nice and thorough. Price was just as affordable as going to vet and they’re open 24/7. Thank you guys fir taking care of our kitty, Max!
Ashley, We’re so glad your first visit went smoothly and that Max received the care he needed. Our team strives to provide thorough, compassionate care around the clock, and it means a lot to hear that you felt well supported. We truly appreciate your trust and look forward to caring for Max whenever he needs us!
Fantastic experience: Very good experience here. Loved the staff. My dog was in for an emergency C-Section. Six healthy puppies later, Everyone went home the same day. Great directions were given with reading material, supplies and puppy food to take home. Will definitely trust this clinic for my pet needs again.
Christy, we’re thrilled that your dog and her six puppies are all healthy and doing well. It means a lot to us that you felt supported throughout the emergency C-section and that the instructions and supplies helped make going home easier. We look forward to being here for any of your pet’s future needs! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Fantastic experience: I wanted to write this review specifically for Dr. Ned Williams and his team. A few years ago Dr. Williams helped our rescue "Bogie" who had suffered a severe back injury and needed extensive surgery. We never thought he would walk again, but thankfully for Dr. Williams, Bogie lived for 12 years - he was 3 at the time of the surgery. Recently, our Rottweiler, "Lola" while playing with our English Bulldog completely tore her ACL and needed surgery. We did not hesitate to request Dr. Williams. Lola's surgery went great and she is recovering nicely. There are no words to express our gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Williams and his team. "Lola" loves going to Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center - she is especially fond of Deanna - who gives her treats and belly rubs! Dr. Williams is a great doctor and an amazing surgeon. He has helped us in so many ways. It is always difficult when your pet needs medical attention and it is comforting to know you have this team helping your pet. Even after the surgery, Dr. Williams explained to us everything Lola is going through and provided us with the anticipated progress and educates us on understanding how to help her recover as needed. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Williams and his amazing team! Thank you just doesn't seem enough.
Carol, thank you so much for sharing your experience and kind words. We are thrilled to hear that both Bogie and Lola have received the care they needed and are doing well. Dr. Williams and our team strive to provide compassionate, expert care while keeping families informed every step of the way, and it means so much to know that our efforts have made a difference for you and your pets. We’ll be sure to share your heartfelt message with Dr. Williams, Deanna, and the rest of the team—they’ll be delighted to hear how much they’ve helped Lola (and Bogie!). Your trust and appreciation mean the world to us, and we are honored to be part of your pets’ care journey.
Positive experience: The Vets and Vet Techs are outstanding. They are caring and professional. I don't like that I can't go with my pet into the initial exam by the Vet. I think the Vet misses a lot of information that only a pet parent can give them about the current symptoms. The triage tech tells me what the Vet is recommending and asks if I agree. I felt my dog had very expensive labs drawn that if I could have spoken to the Vet prior to the blood draw, it could have been omitted. They need to speak to the pet parents before ordering hundreds of dollars' worth of labs, studies, etc. As stated, the Vets and Vet Techs are caring and professional.
Fantastic experience: Our sweet kitty Finn had been in distress for a few days. Today we took him to Eastern and despite the outcome not being what we wanted. They helped us in so many ways. We lost our sweet Finn today and everyone at Eastern was so kind, compassionate and wonderful. This was one of the hardest days of our life but they eased his pain, allowed us to spend time with him while he was comfortable and be with him while he passed. My wife and I were both a mess and everyone at Eastern helped us through it. God bless you guys for making this day manageable and for caring for us and our sweet Finn ❤️
Justin, thank you for your kind words. We know all too well how difficult it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet. We are glad we were able to provide some comfort during this tough process and please don't hesitate to give us a call should you need anything.
Fantastic experience: I am so grateful for this company in Wilmington. I took my 17 month old Yorkshire terrier there late Saturday evening and they were able to Promptly examine and perform x-rays to locate an item he had swallowed, which was still in his stomach. The treatment is pretty miserable, but it successfully got it out after vomiting was induced. The staff were kind and clearly very, very caring for my dog and everything they told me to expect was what the dog experienced. He’s stable has had no sequela and they sent a full report to my primary vet.
Sandy, we’re so glad your pup received prompt and attentive care, and that the treatment was successful in removing the swallowed item. It’s wonderful to hear that our staff’s kindness, clear communication, and thorough follow-up helped make a stressful situation more manageable. We’re thrilled your pup is stable and doing well! Thank you for sharing your experience.
Fantastic experience: After catching my puppy in the act of eating a tampon (gross, I know.) from the bathroom trash, I immediately called here and they advised me to come in. I’m happy to say that she is now completely fine thanks to these awesome people! The front desk staff was absolutely wonderful, and my puppies doctor, Emily Garrett, was as well. Thank you guys so much for all your help! If I ever happen to have another animal emergency, I’ll make sure to come here. It’s expensive, but the price is 100% worth it for a healthy pet and a good experience.
Layla, we’re so glad your puppy is doing well and that Dr. Garrett and our team could help quickly. We really appreciate your kind words about our staff, and it means a lot to know you felt well taken care of. We’ll always be here if another emergency happens! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Fantastic experience: From the time we walked through the door until we left we had exceptional and compassionate care for our kitty Layla. Reception and doctor were professional and caring.
Sherry, we’re thrilled to hear that Layla received compassionate care from the moment you arrived. Our team takes pride in providing professional and caring support, and it means a lot to know it made a difference for you and Layla. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff, and the doctor thoroughly explained all the possible issues our pup might have. We’ve visited a couple of times—once during rush hour, when we had to wait a few hours (which is understandable since it’s the only clinic open 24/7 in town), and once during a quieter time, when our visit lasted no more than an hour and a half despite all the tests and scans. I’m really happy with this place; the staff genuinely tries to accommodate your needs during what can be a very stressful time for you and your pet.
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re glad to hear that our team could provide thorough care and clear explanations for your pup, whether during busy or quieter times. Our staff strives to make stressful situations as smooth as possible, and it’s wonderful to know you felt supported. We truly appreciate your trust and kind words!
Fantastic experience: Brought my kitty Contigo in last night after he started having trouble breathing. He passed away when we were close and when I walked in pleading for them to help they were on their feet immediately and did everything they could do to help. I was an absolute mess and kept asking if there was something I should have done and the techs along with the doctor reassured me there was nothing I could have done differently. This meant so much to me, thank you all for your kindness.
Thank you for trusting us with Contigo’s care and for sharing such a deeply personal experience. We are so very sorry for your loss and know how devastating and sudden that moment was. Our team truly did everything possible for him, and we hope it brought you some comfort to know there was nothing more you could have done. Contigo was clearly so loved, and it was an honor to be there for both of you during such a difficult time. Thank you for your kind words, and please know our thoughts remain with you.
Fantastic experience: I’m so grateful for the quick and thorough care my puppy received when he had an emergency. Everyone I dealt with was so kind and helpful, from the front desk, to the vet techs, to the vets. They made a scary situation more bearable; I felt we were in expert hands so that was reassuring. I felt that the price I paid was reasonable for the care we received given the emergency situation. I hope we never need to go back for another emergency but we are very lucky they are close by and available 24/7 if we do need them again!
Chris and Eileen, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. We know how frightening it can be when your puppy is facing an emergency, and we’re truly glad we could be there for you when you needed us most. Your kind words about our front desk team, technicians, and veterinarians mean a great deal to us—we work hard to make stressful situations feel a little more manageable and reassuring. We’re also grateful for your trust and for recognizing the value of the care provided during an emergency. Please give your pup some extra love from us!
Fantastic experience: My 16 year old Morkie injured herself the night before New Years Eve. The next day, on New Years Eve, she was hunched over and obviously in pain. Of course, her vet closed early that day, so we decided to bring her to Eastern Carolina Vetanary Clinic in Wilmington. They were so friendly and attentive. It's, we waited for quite a while, but it's no different if we have to go to an emergency room and wait. When they took her in for observation, they told us it could be over $500. Of course we agreed, she is one of our babies. The doctor came out and spoke to us and said it looked like nothing is broken, but had possibly wrenched her neck which would affect her front leg. She prescribed gabapenten. The cost was a little over $200. We were pleasantly surprised. They didn't take advantage of us financially. We hope we don't have to use the clinic again, but if we do, we would definitely go back there. Chessie is healing and still is the drama queen she always was.
Nancy, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are pleased that we could provide prompt and attentive care for Chessie during the holiday and that she is now recovering well. Our team strives to offer compassionate and transparent care, and we appreciate your trust in us. We look forward to continuing to support you and Chessie should you require our services in the future.
Fantastic experience: I had to take my Shih Tzu to the vet on New Year’s Day for his dew claw that grew into his pad on his rear foot and it was bleeding. He is 15.5 years old and mostly blind and deaf and hasn’t been letting the groomers trim his nails properly. Eastern was prompt and caring and took care of the issue and DIDN’T charge me a dime but advised me to follow up with our local vet next week. Totally amazing and we are so thankful for the New Year gift!!!
We are honored to have provided care for your pup on New Year's Day. Thank you for trusting us with their care. We understand how stressful these situations can be and we appreciate you trusting us with your pup's care. Please give them some extra love from us!
Negative experience: I needed to take my older dog there over the summer and it was a horrible experience. If I could give zero stars - I would. It was a hot day and he suddenly had trouble breathing after our evening walk. I rush him in and when I visited him in the back it was as hot as it was outside. "Sorry our AC is broken, but we have these fans" The walls were dirty, he was laying in his own pee, the list went on! I barely got the chance to speak with the doctor - who was rushed and inattentive the entire time. Yes I am fortunate he is still here with me but it was such a jarring and horrifying experience that I wouldn't want anyone else to experience it.
Negative experience: Brought my pup in that had a abscess infection on the top of her head that was causing swelling. They told me they needed to rule out trauma and tried to push a 2000$ CT scan, when I refused the CT scan they told me it was an allergic reaction and gave her a shot of Benadryl which did absolutely nothing and I paid 500$ for and was a complete waste. They even told me that the feaver she was running was due to her breed being hyper while lying on the floor on pain she was in no way hyper. I took her to healing hands in Clinton and they almsot immediately said its an infection and needed go be drained but was concerned to do anyting due to her running a fever and asked if they could keep her over night they did the procedure called and was very clear and explained everything that they were correct and it was a severe infection and was appalled at the vet at ECV saying it was an allergic reaction. I should have known what I was getting into walking in this place when the check in paper work says your pets care is determined by how much your willing to pay despite my argument against it being a reaction the only way they were gonna move forward was 400$ bloodwork or a 2k CT scan and all of this was not even asked by the vet just the people at the front desk
Fantastic experience: We had a very scary situation on Christmas Day. I’m very grateful for their quick action. Emily was truly an angel and explained things so well. Her presence and calmness helped my anxiety. Our pup is back to running around and his mischievous ways.
Its always a pleasure to serve clients like you. We appreciate you trusting us with your pup's care and were glad that Emily could provide peace of mind during this stressful situation. Thank you for your amazing review and please give some extra love to your pup from us!
Fantastic experience: We were visiting Southport over the holidays and our 14 year old dog jumped out of the car and tore some leg ligaments. We came in the Saturday after Christmas and, while it was crowded and we waited awhile, the staff, techs and vet were super caring. They did as much of an exam they felt comfortable with, blood tests and physical exam. They gave us all the notes for our vet at home, along with a pain prescription. We felt very professionally and personally cared for. A great place.
Eadie, thank you for entrusting your pet to our care. We understand how difficult emergencies can be and are so glad to have been able to provide the necessary care and comfort to your furry family. We hope that we can continue to provide the same exceptional care to all pets that come through our doors!
Fantastic experience: Amazing doctors and surgeons! My mini schnauzer had 11” od intestines removed from eating string and plastic in the garbage can!
Carol, it's always a pleasure to sure clients like you and thank you for sharing your experience. Your trust in our team during such a difficult situation means the world. Please give your pup some extra love from us!
Fantastic experience: Excellent! Front end staff were pleasant and professional; Triage Tech was very helpful and Dr. Toombs was respectful, discussed options clearly and was very supportive. I will not hesitate to recommend ECVMV!
Kathy, thank you for your wonderful feedback! We are thrilled to hear about your positive experience with Dr Toombs and our staff. We sincerely value your recommendation and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others.
Negative experience: We were there a total of 8 and half hours. The vet spent a total of about 5 mins with me gave little answers and didn’t talk about options only the most expensive choice. I have since researched and talked to another vet and have found there are cheaper and smarter options for treating our dog. The staff was polite and wanted to be helpful. Costs are excessive.
Fantastic experience: Describe my experience? Where do I begin. Not only were they attentive, quick, and sympathetic. They took the BEST care of my cat when he was so close to death because of his lungs filling with fluid. They answered all my questions and I genuinely felt like I was handling the situation with someone who had been in my shoes and completely understood, because they did. If I EVER have an issue again with my cat that requires emergency care, this is EXACTLY where I'm going to take him. Even my dog. They were ABOVE phenomenal. They went BEYOND what I could even say was the best care I'd ever seen a vet provide. Dr. Burkett was amazing and her team? The BEST hands down! Thank yall for saving my boy! He is THRIVING now.
We're honored to have been able to provide exceptional care for your cat. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others. We’re committed to always going above and beyond for our clients, and your satisfaction is our top priority.
Fantastic experience: Great staff, friendly, compassionate, on the ball. The room for our pet was waiting for us when we got there. Great visit. Very thorough. Thank you.
We're privileged to have provided a great visit for your pet. Thank you immensely for your kind words.
Fantastic experience: We were referred here by our primary vet because they were unable to determine if our dog Flynn had a bowel obstruction. The vet Rudi confirmed pretty quick he did in fact have an obstruction and needed surgery that night. They informed us of everything they were going to do and called us when he went in for surgery and also when he came out of surgery. They called us the next morning to let us know he did well overnight and that we would be able to pick him up later In the evening.Thank you for all yall did for Flynn, you saved his life. Highly recommend them for your emergency vet needs.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are thrilled to hear that Flynn received the care he needed and is doing well. We sincerely value your recommendation and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others. Please give Flynn some extra love from us!
Fantastic experience: This hospital saved my cat's leg. My cat suffered a fall which caused her already weakened knee to dislocate and required surgery to correct the problem. I went to a "traveling" surgeon, who was awful. After 2 surgeries I found ECVR, which was a blessing. They were amazing. My cat had 1 surgery to correct the damage done by the traveling surgeon. My cat was prescribed 2 1/2 rounds of physical therapy which worked wonderfully with my cat's injury. The entire staff cares about animals and proved outstanding care that was affordable. There might be a wait to be seen but it's worth the wait. I highly recommend Dr Guevara, Dr Talbert and Luke (physical therapist)! They saved my kitty's leg and she is 95% healed. I say 95% because on occasion she does have a slight limp, which is common when recovering that type of injury.
Jennifer, thank you for entrusting your pet to our care. We understand how difficult emergencies can be and are so glad to have been able to provide the necessary care and comfort to your furry family. We sincerely value your recommendation of Dr Guevara, Dr Talbert and Luke and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others.
Negative experience: We brought our 6-month-old golden doodle to this emergency clinic after he ingested homemade salt dough. From the first phone call, the experience was deeply disappointing. The person who answered was rude, dismissive, and unhelpful, which caused us to go elsewhere initially. Only to be forced to go here because the other clinic closed for the day. Once on site, we were taken back quickly, but the communication that followed felt fear-based rather than evidence-based. Staff used extreme language (brain swelling, hemorrhage, liver failure) before toxicity was confirmed. We were required to personally call and pay $90 to a toxicology hotline before they could proceed. Despite this uncertainty, we were immediately presented with a $2,500–$3,000 estimate and told we had to pay $2,500 up front just to leave our dog in their care. As the only emergency vet in the Wilmington area, this felt like a clear imbalance of power during an already terrifying situation. Our dog stayed just over 12 hours, received fluids, and was discharged. The final bill was still over $2,000. Emergency care is expensive, but compassion and transparency should not be optional. We did not feel supported—only pressured. We would not recommend based on our experience.
Fantastic experience: They have taken care of my Jack twice. Excellent care, compassion, and very helpful.
Vickie, your feedback is incredibly valuable. We are glad to hear about the excellent care and compassion provided to Jack. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Fantastic experience: Our tabby received the very best care possible from everyone at ECVMC. We were kept informed of his progress multiple times each day. He spent 3 days under their care. We were given clear instructions for at home care and provided everything that was needed. Excellent doctors and all support personnel!
Hi Kathy, thank you for your kind review. We’re glad that we were able to provide care when your kitty needed it. Thank you for your visit and we hope that both you and your kitty take care!
Fantastic experience: Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center...your staff is the best of the best. From the time I walked in with my Piper until I checked her out. You staff was polite...kind...caring and compassionate. Thank you for taking care of my fur baby. She is doing great and is back to herself 100%. Can't thank you enough for how you took care of us!!!
Kenneth, we deeply respect your kind words and are thrilled to hear that Piper is back to herself 100%. Our staff's commitment to offering compassionate, understanding, and helpful care is a cornerstone of our service. Thank you for entrusting us with her care.
Fantastic experience: Very quick, very compassionate, kept us informed, treated us with such respect. While no one ever wants to go to the ER, the entire staff and drs were wonderful!! They made the visit less stressful.
Hi Carol, thank you for your kind review. Our staff's commitment to offering compassionate, understanding, and helpful care is a cornerstone of our service. We’re glad that we were able to provide care when your pet needed it. Thank you for your visit and we hope that both you and your pet take care!
Fantastic experience: Eastern Carolina Veterinary Emergency Hospital truly went above and beyond. From the moment I called to the moment I arrived, everyone was incredibly kind and compassionate. Throughout the entire time my dog was in their care, they kept me informed every step of the way, explaining each decision clearly and thoroughly. I always felt confident that my dog was receiving the best possible care, and that I was being given the most accurate and honest information. The compassion and professionalism shown by everyone—from the front desk staff to the doctors—made a very stressful situation much easier. I couldn’t be happier with the care and treatment my dog received, and I’m deeply grateful to this amazing team.
We genuinely admire the kind words you shared about your experience at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral. Thank you for trusting us with your pup's care. We’re committed to always going above and beyond for our clients, and your satisfaction is our top priority. Please give your pup some extra love from us!
Fantastic experience: When I arrived with my very sick puppy, they immediately took us back to a room where she could be checked out. The tech even filled out the entry form so I could continue to hold my scared shaking puppy. Dr Ruffner quickly did an evaluation and determined it was a mild toxin and gave a shot of antinausea medication and fluids to help get it out of her system faster. They were able to assure me that she would recover by the next day, and indeed she was much better by morning. Lesson learned: puppies will eat ANYTHING - be careful.
Krista, thank you for entrusting your pet to our care. We understand how difficult emergencies can be and are so glad to have been able to provide the necessary care and comfort to your furry family. We hope that we can continue to provide the same exceptional care to all pets that come through our doors!
Fantastic experience: Ruby had emergency back surgery and spent 2 wks at the hospital. Wonderful care. The Neurologist and Pt each called us daily with complete updates. The people at the front desk were very patient and kind. Encouraged us to call ANYTIME, 24/7 I would highly recommend them. But be careful, they fall in love with your animal and spoil them ❤️
We are pleased to hear about Ruby's successful surgery and the wonderful care provided by our team. We sincerely value your recommendation and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others.
Negative experience: Our trip here started to go sideways when we were finally seen by the doctor, who told us our dog had an intestinal blockage. She did an okay job explaining what that meant, but lost me when she began talking about the percentage rate of him “not being in the clear” and showed very little empathy. When we asked about timeframe and price, we were shocked when she told us it would be anywhere between $4,000–$6,000, offered no further explanation, and simply stared at us. Thankfully, the vet tech came in afterward and was far more sympathetic and helpful. She explained our options, went into more detail about the procedure, and truly put us at ease. The vet tech made me feel like my dog was going to be okay, while the doctor made me feel like it was a lost cause. The vet tech also clarified that the $4,000–$6,000 included everything, not just the surgery, since by that point we already knew we would be paying for the visit and X-rays. The doctor did not disclose any of this to us. By 1:30, we were leaving, and our dog had been taken back about a half hour earlier to be prepped for surgery. We were told we would be notified by the doctor before surgery began and that he would be seen in about three hours. At 4:30, we still hadn’t heard from anyone, so we called and were told there had been another emergency and they were waiting for the ER to clear up, but again, we were told we would be called before surgery started. By 7:30, our dog had been there for six hours and we still had not received any communication. We called again and were told the same thing: there was another emergency and another blockage, but our dog would be seen soon and we would be called before surgery. At 9:30, after eight hours with no communication and having to call three times ourselves, I was explaining our frustration when my phone finally rang and I was informed by the doctor that my dog’s surgery was complete. By that point, I was terrified and trembling. I didn’t know if my dog was okay or even if he had gone into surgery yet. We were supposed to be notified before surgery started, not after it was finished. My husband and I sat in fear and uncertainty for nine hours due to the hospital’s lack of communication. On Sunday, 12/14/25, I was told we would receive an update around noon. It was 12:45 before I received a call and that was the only communication I had about his progress since 9:30pm the previous day. I called ahead as instructed to confirm my dog had kept his food down so we could pick him up. We arrived at 2:25 and didn’t leave until 3:05. Another 45 minutes of waiting for them to bring me my dog. I’m thankful that he is okay, but this was the worst experience I have ever had.
Fantastic experience: We went to the Neurology Department and saw Dr. Alleva. She explained what was happening to our dog and put him on medication for epileptic seizures. We were only there a few days ago but there have been no seizures since. Riley, my husband, and myself are all feeling better. Fingers crossed.
We are pleased to hear about the positive experience with our Neurology Department and the improvement in your pet's condition. It's wonderful to know that Dr. Alleva was able to clearly explain what was happening with your pup and provide the needed care. Thank you for your amazing review!
Fantastic experience: My family and I have needed to use ECVR’s services a few times over the years, most recently this past Friday when my dog was showing signs of discomfort and anxiety. The staff was super friendly, comforting, and thorough from the receptionist who checked us in, to the vet tech who triaged her issues to the veterinarian who examined her. I appreciated that she recommended a conservative course of action and didn’t immediately order expensive tests she knew wouldn’t be helpful. We were luckier than many who visit the emergency vet in the middle of the night…it was a temporary situation that resolved itself. I am very thankful to the staff at ECVR for their excellent treatment of my fur baby and the professionalism and comfort they showed to us.
Joelle, thank you for sharing your wonderful review! The qualities you described are the goals we strive to achieve for all of our clients. On behalf of the staff, thank you for trusting us with your pets' care.
Fantastic experience: We had an absolutely incredible experience. Every single individual with whom I interacted was kind, professional, friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. It was a scary night and they made our experience a very positive one given the circumstances. I highly recommend them!
Hi Jared, thank you for your kind review. We’re glad that we were able to provide care when your pet needed it. We sincerely value your recommendation and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others.
Fantastic experience: I could not be more grateful for the compassion and kindness that was shared with us by the staff at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center. We had an emergency with our dog, Cali, yesterday and after choosing to bring her home, we had to return this morning to put her down. Everyone on staff was so sweet, so kind. From the vet tech who came in to talk us through everything and sat on the floor with me while I pet my girl, to the doctor who put a blanket fresh out of the dryer on her to make her comfortable. Everything was explained slowly and calmly. This was the hardest day but we are so grateful for the angels working there today.
Caitlin, we know all too well how difficult it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet. They will forever remain in our hearts. We are glad that we were able to provide some comfort during this difficult time and please don’t hesitate to give us a call should you need anything.
Fantastic experience: On Friday, my sweet girl Shelby was ready to cross the rainbow bridge. I brought her here & I felt comforted knowing she was loved by the staff too until her final moments with us. They didn't rush us, we were able to spend as much time before & after with her. They were able to work with us financially & I am just extremely thankful for the love & care provided. No request too strange for them as I asked for some fur & her toe nails to come home with me & without judgement I received both in glass vials. Thank you all for what you do, I couldnt have been more comfortable making such a big decision if it weren't for the kindness of this staff. I'm including a few pictures of my Shelby girl in her glory days bc that's the way I saw her even at the end.

Negative experience: Multiple visits here. But… I do believe $185.00 to walk through the door is price gouging. Hit with another 800$ for an enema, and hydration. I remember a time when vets truly cared. What we allow will continue. Return to ethics not profits. I’m looking into a not-for-profit alternative solution to shut this place down. I’ll fund it to start up myself. Our pets are family and shouldn’t be denied emergency care on the ability to pay.
Negative experience: Horrible customer service. No compassion, just wanted to kill my dog and didn’t even offer her comfort meds or palliative care options. They said my dog has end stage intracranial disease. I took her to NC state and that is not the case so they caused me all that trauma and upset over nothing. They were so quick to offer euthanasia, but didn’t offer any other options like palliative care or comfort meds. When I called back and asked for comfort meds they said that I would need to pay another $185 for another exam that the vet that seen my dog wasn’t there and would be gone for several weeks. Place is such a joke. I heard awful things over the years about this place but seen that they had 4 stars so I thought maybe they got better. Yeah right. I wouldn’t take your dog here unless it’s a serious emergency and it sucks it’s the only 24/7 option we have here.
Fantastic experience: We have had excellent experience with this Emergency Vet Hospital! The front staff is AMAZING!! We love Izzy, and Alexis, Trinity and Amy were all so kind and loving on our Molly!! Overall we can’t say enough about the front desk staff as you walk in and or call and the kindness shown to us and everyone was just amazing!! Definitely would recommend if you need ER services!
Jennifer, we're ecstatic to hear about your excellent experience at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral! Thank you for sharing your kind words about our front desk staff. Your recommendation means a lot to us!
Fantastic experience: My pet’s ailment was not life threatening but she was in pain. She was seen promptly by a concerned and efficient staff. My visit was on a late night holiday weekend and even though it was busy we were checked in and seen rather quickly. As a pet owner of two the peace of mind knowing this facility is there is priceless. Thank you staff!!
Jill, we're delighted to hear about your positive experience at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral. Thank you for sharing your feedback!
Positive experience: There are areas I will give 5 stars and there are areas I would give 3 stars. I do think over all they mean well. They need to make sure your pet is 100% ready to leave when it is time. My dog was missing that final step which I do believe may have contributed to his reason of returning for more care. I appreciated the care it’s the financial part that was a bit hard to swallow.
Fantastic experience: Well, certainly not inexpensive, this medical center is extremely professional, caring, but above all – successful in saving the lives of our beloved pets. Pets being in affect members of our families. So my wife and I thank you for saving the life of Katy this week. Do not hesitate to use these folks in anything serious with your pets! Dr. Keith Reiss.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful review, Keith. The qualities you described are the goals we strive to achieve for all of our clients. On behalf of the staff, thank you for trusting us with your pets' care!
Fantastic experience: Taking our tiny Chihuahua in for surgery to remove a tumor was one of the scariest experiences of my life. She has never been away from us—not even boarded—so the idea of leaving her was overwhelming. But from the moment we walked into Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral, every single person there eased our fears. Ellie was an absolute angel. She didn’t just care for our sweet Elizabeth—she cared for me too. Her kindness, calmness, and genuine compassion made all the difference. She treated Elizabeth as if she were her own, and I could see immediately that she truly loves what she does. And then there’s Dr. Pfefer. Where do I even begin? He is thorough, professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and his surgical skill is extraordinary. Elizabeth’s incision healed so beautifully he could honestly be a plastic surgeon. He took his time with us, answered every question, and clearly went the extra mile. You can feel his passion and dedication the moment he walks in the room. The entire staff here is special—this is not “just a job” for them. It is a calling. Their compassion, love for animals, and commitment to their work is evident in everything they do. I am beyond grateful for this amazing group of people. Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking such exceptional care of our girl and giving us peace during one of the hardest moments we’ve faced. Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral has earned our complete trust and lifelong appreciation.
Jennifer, thank you for sharing your wonderful review and experience with Ellie and Dr Pfefer. The qualities you described are the goals we strive to achieve for all of our clients. On behalf of the staff, thank you for trusting us with your pets' care!
Fantastic experience: I had to find an emergency vet while on vacation in Wilmington due to some concerning behavior with our dog our first night there. We went in around 5am on Thanksgiving, and all of the staff were very friendly and helped calm my nerves. We did not have to wait long at all and were very satisfied with the care of our dog, and the medication we were sent home with that helped him.
Alex, thank you for entrusting your pet to our care. We understand how difficult emergencies can be and are so glad to have been able to provide the necessary care and comfort to your furry family. We hope that we can continue to provide the same exceptional care to all pets that come through our doors!
Fantastic experience: I cannot say enough good about this place. We had to rush our baby girl up here on an emergency basis and ended up having spine surgery. The staff and doctors are awesome and explain everything in detail that is happening to your pet. They call us twice a day faithfully to give us updates on how she is doing And if anything changes that needs immediate attention they will also call and update you. If you would have an emergency with your pet, I highly highly recommend This place We had to drive three hours to take her here and would do it again in a heartbeat to get the best care again.
We’re honored to be trusted with your pet's care. We sincerely value your recommendation and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others.
Negative experience: do not go here. i'd rather have a pet die at home than pay them $2,000 to "look at" my pet and do nothing. my cat's life was ping-ponged in front of me and the only topic brought up was money, not my cat's healthh. blonde "doctor" was horrid, doesn't know how to read the room, and genuinely does not care about anything going on with pets and their parents. thanks :)
Negative experience: Not impressed with the follow-up care. I was told I could bring my dog in to have his bandage rewrapped with no problem. I explained how I live over an hour away same I sat in the closest er for hours to have them not help me. I was assured that would not happen here. I got up ay 4 am to get here. Was the only person in the waiting room just to be told the Dr didn’t feel comfortable with rewrapping and I would need to wait for the surgeon at 7. 7 am comes and goes and then they have no idea when the surgeon will be in. They knew I have an important appointment in Raleigh at noon and have to leave by 830. After they did the original surgery, I expected some level of support for follow-up care. Instead, I sat in the lobby for three hours and was never helped. It feels like once they received payment for the surgery, any additional care or concern disappeared. I’m extremely disappointed and wouldn’t recommend them based on this experience. My dog deserved better, and so did I.
Fantastic experience: Dr. Guevara was very thorough with me pre and post op with my dogs surgery. Sarah Close took great care of my boy post op as well. Molly Haberli gave me hourly updates as he recovered. Ellie Peterson sent me what to do/went over instructions clearly and what to expect in the days after surgery. A solid team effort that I very much appreciate their time and expertise.
We are delighted to hear about the thorough care provided to your pup during and after surgery. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others. We’re committed to always going above and beyond for our clients, and your satisfaction is our top priority.
Negative experience: Arrived at 1030, wasn't seen until 1230 when the tech came out and got my pup. Said they needed to sedate him for an x-ray. 8 month old corgi. Then I waited until 230 before the vet informed me of what was going on. Fractured leg. Said he would need a splint. Vet said she would send the tech back in to go over everything since she knew I had some "financial concerns". I have the money I just don't like spending it on unneeded stuff. 3pm the tech comes in to go over the bill. Over $700 bucks for an x-ray and a freaking splint. I got to pick him up at 5. But in reality I showed up at 5 and waited until 615 for them to bring him out. So just to recap: showed up 1030 am, seen vet at 230 pm, tech goes over bill and tells me to pick him up at 5 at 3pm, I show up at 5 pm pay over $700.00 for an x-ray and a splint, finally get my pup back at 615 pm. I will say the front desk is wonderful and I understand it's an emergency room kind of vet and that more serious issues take precedence, Im just annoyed at sitting around allll day in a waiting room just to spend a lot of money on something I don't think should have cost as much as it did. The splint and bandage is very well done. I had to come here little over a year ago for another dog to have abdominal surgery and that experience was alot better, faster wait time and the bill was cheaper. That's why I don't understand why it was so expensive this time. But oh well. Not many choices round here on a Sunday
Fantastic experience: ECVMC was wonderful to us when we showed up with our cat who was hit by a car. They took him back right away, kept us updated with his progress and assessments, and made us feel valued. Their prices were surprisingly affordable for an emergency center and despite it being a busy Friday night, we were in and out within a few hours. I can't thank them enough for their care, our kitty is doing just fine now!
Sydney, thank you for entrusting your pet to our care. We understand how difficult emergencies can be and are so glad to have been able to provide the necessary care and comfort to your furry family. We hope that we can continue to provide the same exceptional care to all pets that come through our doors!
Fantastic experience: First time needing to use this emergency clinic. It was a fantastic experience from the moment we arrived to the time we left. Our pup was looked at immediately by the triage technician. He was taken to the back while I filled out the paperwork. All costs were explained to me. After about 30 minutes we were brought to the back and Dr. Landers met with us to explain and answer all our questions. Everything was efficient and professional. It is so satisfying to know there is an emergency clinic in town that is so fantastic. Thank you Eastern Carolina Veterinary Clinic for all you do!
